Lifetime Achievement Award

For more than two decades, Dorothy V. McIntosh has been a beacon of hope and compassion in our community, embodying the spirit of “service above self” in every endeavor. Her unwavering commitment to uplifting others has left an indelible mark on the lives of countless individuals, transforming our community for the better.

As a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of St. Croix since 1999, Dorothy has held numerous leadership positions, including Community Service Chairperson, President, Vice President, Secretary, and Vocational Service Chairperson. Her outstanding contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Service Above Self award five times and the Rotary International President Award for Community Service.

Dorothy’s acts of service range from organizing back-to-school supply giveaways for children in the Boys and Girls Club of Frederiksted to mentoring students through vocational and career workshops. Her leadership of the Rotary Interact program has empowered young people to develop essential leadership skills while embracing the ethos of service.

Beyond Rotary, Dorothy’s dedication extends to cultural enrichment and community outreach. She has volunteered at the Calypso Cultural Day summer camp hosted by King Derby and sponsored dance workshops on island by Impande Ye Africa dance group performers from Texas. Her commitment to feeding the homeless, especially on her birthday, World Food Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, showcases her compassionate spirit and dedication to serving those in need.

Military Service and Patriotism

Dorothy’s service to our country spans over 30 years, including four years in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Her assignments in Arizona and Japan further underscore her dedication to duty and honor. In St. Croix, she served in the V.I. National Guard, where she had the honor of serving on one of the first women’s firing squads, performing 21-gun salutes at military funerals.

Throughout her military career, Dorothy attained the rank of Sergeant First Class and received commendations such as the Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation, V.I. Long and Faithful Service, and V.I. National Guard Commendation. Her sacrifices and contributions to safeguarding our freedoms exemplify the highest ideals of patriotism and service.

Before retirement, she spent several years working at the Lt. Governors Tax Assessors office.

A Legacy of Humility and Family

Despite her remarkable achievements, Dorothy remains humble and modest, never seeking recognition for her noble deeds. A proud native of St. Croix and graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School (Class of 68), Dorothy’s commitment to service is rooted in her upbringing and values instilled by her late parents, Ivan Stanley McIntosh and Hortencia Gittens McIntosh.

As a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dorothy’s family is a source of joy and inspiration. Her love and support have enriched the lives of her four daughters (D’Laurie, Itanya, Horasetta, and D’Niele), 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren serving as a testament to her unwavering dedication to nurturing future generations.

Her seven sisters stand united with her, embodying her unwavering spirit, steadfastly supporting her community initiatives. They are always poised to provide active assistance, and form as an unyielding pillar of her support system.

In honoring Dorothy, we not only celebrate her remarkable contributions to our community but also reaffirm our commitment to embodying the principles of service, compassion, and selflessness in our own lives.

Nathan “Nate” Bishop

Our communities are built with enlistment of many persons who provide help and support. Increasingly, within our communities on St. Croix, there are people at the forefront of this unambiguous mindset, who believes in inspiring happiness, optimism, and hope. When our community calls upon them to help, they willingly give hands down. One such person is Nathan “Nate” Bishop.

Nathan was born and raised on the big island of St. Croix to Brian Bishop and Geraldine Brady-Bishop. He and his family lived in Christiansted town for much of his childhood where the Christiansted waterfront, as he remembered, was part of his “playground.” He and his brother would swim, sail and snorkel in the downtown harbor and Altona Lagoon beach exploring the sea life around Hotel on the Cay.

The family squeezed themselves into a tiny house in the back of Crucian Gold in a courtyard on Company Street in Christiansted as his father began his passion in the business of jewelry making. And most importantly, that business became the initiating place for Nate, himself, to learn the craft of goldsmithing.

As a child, Nathan attended St. Dunstan’s School and Country Day School. After school, he would help his dad and learn metalsmithing and the process of shaping chaney to be set as jewelry. Later, Nathan moved to Pennsylvania to live with his mother where he attended high school.

Chaneys are pieces of china from the time period of the 18th and 19th centuries. They are found washed up on the beach and around many of the old sugar plantation Greathouses on St. Croix.

After high school, Nate attended Temple University and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. He moved to New York City to live and worked with two non-profit organizations: Recycle-A-Bike and Rocking-The-Boat. The opportunity allowed him to serve inner city youths and communities and taught bike maintenance and boat building.

In New York, Nathan discovered his love of Capoeira (a Brazilian martial art/dance done to music) which he studied further in traveling to Brazil. Nathan is a member of the St. Croix Bonsai Club and St. Croix Capoeira Club.

His love for St. Croix was never forgotten. In 2001, Nathan returned to St Croix to work with his father, Brian, and his wife at Crucian Gold. He calls home at the north side of the island in La Vallee.

Nathan helped Crucian Gold to expand and grow the brand, both locally and nationally, by adding new designs to the showcases and featuring collections. The web and social media of the business is phenomenal. Currently, he leads the jewelry team at Crucian Gold. Best of all, he is community minded and continuously donates back to his community.

Nathan is married to Therese Trudeau-Bishop; they have two children, Lucia and Necha Bishop.

Maria Aurora Stiles

Practicing gratitude and mindfulness directs a person in improving his or her self. This mantra can guide you to continue moving forward toward the vision you have of your best self. And Maria Aurora Stiles was no exception using it as a guiding principle. She incorporates these principles into her everyday life enjoying self-improvement, education, and expression.

Maria hails from the beautiful island of AyAy. the land of many rivers. The Indigenous Ancestors named the island of St. Croix, AyAy.

Stiles is well-known in St. Thomas as well as in St. Croix. On St. Thomas, she manages an area for the organic food community. And on St. Croix works with art educators and artists. Best of all, Maria is a cultural dancer, art teacher, spiritual healer, nature lover, and historian.

Maria believes in teaching and advocating through expressions such as art, dance, and music. And she was amazing at it and continues to make a lasting impact. Moreover, she is grateful for everything and feels fulfilled by creating spaces where one’s talent can emerge.

Even with her busy schedule, Stiles makes jewelry, but she wishes that time became unlimited to create the jewelry that she loves. She believes that being in tune with your destiny and having a clear idea of purpose contributes to individual fulfillment.

Her brand Natural AyAy LLC was built on reverence for nature, surrendering to the sacred flow of life and the importance of reconnecting with earth medicine through culture, craft and adornment. She explains that their seeds and seed pods workshops, lesson plans, and sacred power jewelry collection are designed to inspire and invoke into awareness the spirit of resourcefulness and the wisdom of those who came before us.

In understanding her strength, Maria said, “My work is informed and inspired as an initiation of Indigenous spiritual traditions, influenced by my creative parents, motherhood and my passion for cultural and environmental preservation.”

Rotary Club of St. Croix West Guiding Principles

These principles have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction. They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world.

Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

• FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

• SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

• THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

• FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings: Of the things we think, say or do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

On few occasions, we find someone in our community with tenacity to take on projects and drive it to success… from alpha to omega. It’s even more obscure to find a senior with the courage to take on projects that many her junior would shy away from. A reflection of the realization of her calling in life. Her name is Rotarian Claire Lorraine Browne Roker.

A Virgin Islander to the bone, Claire was born in Frederiksted, St. Croix to Henry and Wilhelmina Jackson Brown, and grew up in the New Town area of Frederiksted with her sister, Juanita, and brother, George. She attended the Saint Patrick Catholic School.

In 1947, the Brown family moved to New York City where she graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Long Island. In 1964, Claire returned home to visit her aunt, educator and storyteller extraordinaire, Delta M. Dorsch, who along with other members of their closely knit family persuaded her to remain at home.

Claire began a career in the travel industry as a passenger service agent with Pan American World Airways, which gave her opportunities to travel the world. Moreover, she studied business administration and accounting at the then College of the Virgin Islands. These undertakings placed the cornerstones for her future endeavors to include owning her own travel agency, Roker’s Travel & Tours.

Claire became an active participant in the territory’s politics in the seventies as a campaign helper for the late Atty. Derek M. Hodge bid for St. Croix District Chairman of the Democratic Party in 1974. Again in 1984, she served as Campaign Manager for the late Atty. Albert A Sheen’s bid for Senator. She played an influential role in the election of Alexander A. Farrelly and Derek M. Hodge for Governor and Lt. Governor in 1986.

Serving her home islands, US Virgin Islands, is tantamount to her passion for public service. These include:

1. Assistant Director of Tourism

2. Director of Tourism

3. Assistant Tourism Commissioner

4. Office Manager for former Delegate Donna M. Christensen

5. Office Manager for former Senator Ronald E. Russell

6. St. Croix District Chair for the Democratic Party

DID YOU KNOW

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and more than 18 million people have it. One of the leading causes of heart disease is high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. High blood pressure is where the force of the blood through your blood vessels is too hard which over time can lead to damage to your blood vessels. Uncontrolled high blood pressure occurs when you don’t know you have high blood pressure or don’t have it under control. This can put you at greater risk for stroke, vision loss, heart failure, heart attack, sexual dysfunction, and kidney failure.

The best way to prevent having uncontrolled high blood pressure is by having regular visits with your doctor or advanced practice provider (APP). They will work with you to determine what your blood pressure reading should be, which medications to take, and what if any lifestyle changes you should make. Here are 6 tips to help you manage your high blood pressure.

The Rotary Club of St. Croix West acknowledges the generosity of our sponsors and donors. Special thank you to everyone who contributed and assisted in every way to this evening’s event for your invaluable charitable support. Sponsors & Advertisers

THE HISTORY OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF ST. CROIX WEST

Rotarians pride themselves on providing service to others, promoting integrity, and advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. And on St. Croix, their legacy shows, especially in the Rotary Club of St. Croix West. So what ignited this club?

Prior to 1968, St. Croix had only one rotary club: The Rotary Club of St. Croix, and members from the town of Frederiksted journeyed to Christiansted on Thursdays to attend its weekly luncheon meeting. But it was the brainchild of the late Peter A. Christian to establish a rotary club in Frederiksted. Despite, his difficulties in finding twenty dedicated persons to commence a new club, he succeeded and birthed the Rotary Club of St. Croix West.

On November 2, 1968, Dr. Mario F. Ramirez Acosta, the Governor of Rotary International District 403, presented the Charter of the Rotary Club of St. Croix West to President Peter A. Christian, which provided some roots in Frederiksted. Today the Club is under Rotary International District 7020.

Since then, the Club has spread its wings to what sums up to the winning culture at the club best. Noteworthy to say, as part of District 7020, the club closely collaborates with Caribbean clubs to include USVI, BVI, Jamaica, Haiti, Cayman Islands, St. Martin, St Maarten, Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla, and St Barths.

The Rotary Club of St. Croix West has distinguished itself as one of the outstanding service organizations not only on St. Croix but also in the Rotary District. Our club has taken lead in establishing and maintaining such projects as

• Sponsoring the attendance of two high school students each year at a World Affair Youth Seminar on the US. Mainland.

• Rising to the occasion several times yearly as emergency needs (medical, fire, etc.) Are brought to the club’s attention.

The Rotary Club of St. Croix West during the last twenty years, through the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, contributes funds towards the annihilate of polio worldwide. The club also contributes towards a feeding program in Haiti, improves drinking water, and provides sanitation infrastructure. Our support helps to eradicate diseases which cause misery, pain, and poverty for millions of people worldwide.

• Funding and serving at the annual Christmas party for the residents at Whim Gardens for senior citizens.

• Funding various children’s Christmas parties.

• Assisting the Boys and Girls Club of St. Croix.

• Sponsoring and serving at Interact Clubs for young people at St. Croix Central High School, St. Croix Educational Complex, and the Arthur A. Richards School

• Awarding a one to four-year academic scholarship to a high school graduate each year;

Women are active participants in Rotary, serving their communities in increasing numbers and serving in leadership positions in Rotary. The 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs worldwide remains a watershed moment in the history of Rotary. Since then, many women have served or are serving in leadership roles to include our current president, Ophelia “Nemmy” Jackson, current Assistant Governor Jenell Bryan, and Past District Governor Deborah Y. Howell. The club

The Rotary Club of St. Croix West has provided Rotary International District 7020 with four District Governors: Sanseric Powell (1990-1991), Edgar Iles (1995-1995), Rupert W. Ross, Jr., (2008-2009), and Deborah Y. Howell (20222023). The current Assistant Governor for the island of St. Croix is Jenell Bryan.

The love of Rotary and challenge of “Service Above Self” along with talents remains in abundance in our club and in the heart of Rotarians. The Rotary Club of St. Croix West looks forward to continued service with distinction to local and international communities.

Rotary clubs bring together people across generations who wish to create lasting change in the world, in their communities, and in themselves. Rotary and Rotaract members around the world strengthen their connections to friends and neighbors taking action through service. From big cities to rural villages, Rotary is changing communities like yours.
