Handball Year 2009 was very successful in achievements for the Sydney University Handball Club. Both the women’s and men’s teams were champions of the NSW League held at Olympic Park. Abel Salhioui was appointed as men’s team coach and Falk Von Hollen was appointed as women’s team coach. At the end of the year Falk stepped down from his position and started travelling around the world. Kimberly Higgins took over the women’s team coaching. The SUHS thanks Abel, Falk and Kim for their hard work and excellent results. Six of our club players were selected to represent Australia at the Oceania World Qualification Women’s Championships and Pacific Cup held in Brisbane, 01 – 06th June, 2009. The players were: Jessica Fearnside, Aminta Thomas, Kim Higgins, Sally Potocki, Gizelle Van de Merve and Vanja Smiljanovic. Unfortunately, due to the University Basketball World Cup commitments, Sally Potocki had to withdraw from the Handball National Team. The Australian Handball Team won the Oceania Championship and was qualified to the World Cup. The Sydney University Handball Club provided three players for the Australian Women’s Handball World Championships held in Benjim, China,

December 2009. Our club players were: Jessica Fearnside, Aminta Thomas and Gizelle Van de Merve. The Australian Team did not manage to win any games and finished in 24th place. The SUHC would like to thanks all the players for their contributions. Three of our club players were selected to the Australian Men’s Team Squad; Pascal Winkler, Steve Plummer and Michael Sullivan. We wish them good luck in the 2010 season. Six of Sydney University Handball Women’s Players and seven of Men’s Players were selected to the NSW Senior State Teams to compete at the National Handball Championships held in Perth, October 2009. Both teams played in exceptional style. The men’s team won the national title and the women’s team was the runners up. Four of Sydney University Women’s Handball Players were selected to the NSW under 21 Junior State Teams to compete at the National Handball Championships held in Brisbane. The team was too strong for all the other states and they won the national title. Sally Potocki was voted as the best player and top scorer during this tournament.

Every year many handball club members take special tasks in different competitions. Our club produced four referees and four table officials for various levels of championships. Jessica Fearnside was the referee and the Table Official for the NSW League and National Championship. Dorothy Potocka was Technical Table Official and referee for the Oceania Handball Federation Women’s World Championship Qualifying Tournament and Pacific Cup held in Brisbane, Australia. Kai Englehardt, Falk Von Hollen and Alex Tzigher were the referees for the NSW League. The Sydney University Handball Club organised attendance at various social events such as: start of season pub crawl, AGM BBQ, day at the Randwick Races, Lawn Bowls Day and end of season celebration.
