ABOUT ME.
Hello! My name is Sydney Timp, a senior studying interior design at Iowa State University. I am so excited to share with you the following projects I have completed throughout my years as an undergrad student. I have been inspired by the positive impact designers have on the health and wellbeing of the greater community. I am extremely excited to begin my work in this industry and make a lasting impact on the lives of all users and clients. I strive to design memorable, safe, and beautiful environments where everyone wants to stay a little longer.
ENJOY!

Continued Care Retirement Community

My team was given the task of turning an abandoned mall, Park Fair Mall , in Des Moines , Iowa , into a bright and lively Continued Care Retirement Community. Throughout this adaptive reuse process, we turn a cold and deserted mall into a CCRC which houses both independent and assisted living residents.
There are far too many negative connotations regarding existing CCRCs, and our team wants to change the way the greater community views these facilities. The Social reverses these stereotypes and invites residents into its bright and fun atmosphere, encouraging residents to tap into their childlike creativity and rekindle their zest for life . The Social fosters a creative and curious mindset that enhances self-actualization and revitalizes a sense of purpose from within.
After all, age is not how old you are but how many years of fun you’ve had!

CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT
An important aspect of creating a pleasant transition from residents’ own homes into Continued Care Retirement Communities is allowing them control over their environment. The Social implements resident-friendly controllable features such as these automated blinds. These blinds allow users to control the amount of light let into the room.
The material palette consists of a neutral backdrop with pops of lively and bright accent colors. We stray away from traditional style furniture and choose fun and playful pieces. All furniture is ergonomic and is carefully selected keeping in mind our demographic’s potential physical limitations.

Microhome

This course project was primarily focused on implementing effective visualization techniques to interior design presentations.
We were given square footage guidelines through the Bee Breeders Microhome Competition. With the help of my teammates Lin Pizzo and Sydney Freking, our design team was designing both the interior and exterior of a microhome suitable for a young professional couple .
Located in Rovaniemi, Finland , this microhome is inspired by the forms and circulation of the traditional igloo dwelling. Named the migloo , micro-igloo, this home emulates the spatial organization and heat circulation existent in traditional igloos. Inspired by the surrounding Scandinavian landscape and its simplistic nature, the migloo emphasizes functionality and minimalism . Our migloo is simple and practical and allows residents to maximize their space, warmth, and views of nature.

BELLA VIE. 03
Parisian Cafe
REVIT | ENSCAPE | PHOTOSHOP
The primary focus of this course project is on the application of color and how it relates to the overall experience. I created this project for my Avanced Color Studio course.
I introduce to you, Bella Vie Cafe . This Parisianinspired cafe is located in Lincoln Park, Chicago, IL . Bella Vie invites you to stay awhile. After studying abroad in Europe, I observed the coffee habits of locals. Locals stayed awhile; they enjoyed one another’s company and sat for hours sipping coffee. Bella Vie does not advertise to-go mugs as guests are invited to relax and sip their coffee slowly, whether it is before their work day, on a break, or after their work day. Guests are intended to feel as if they are sitting in a cozy Parisian loft as they sip their coffee.
Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city and travel to Bella Vie where you can enjoy the simplest of pleasures: great coffee and great company.
MATERIAL SELECTIONS
This cafe is bright, welcoming, and lively. I have chosen a double split complementary color scheme which includes yellow-orange, red-violet, blue -violet, and yellow-green hues. To serve as a neutral backdrop, I choose a light herringbone wood flooring and a light cream wall paint color. Contrasting from the neutral backdrop are the bright pops of color in the fabric and furniture choices.

The design of this cafe provides guests with a variety of options for seating. Guests can enjoy their cup of coffee in a cozy booth, at the bar, or lounging in our beautiful furniture. This cafe is intended to take on a resi-commercial Parisian feel, welcoming guests with its cozy and bright seating options.

International Student Center
Iowa State University’s International Student Center is designed to help students acclimate to their environment and succeed both individually and academically through their international studies in the United States. The design of this building directly impacts these student’s success and comfortability while staying in a foreign environment. Our team creates an adaptable environment intended to enhance individual growth and further these students’ meaningful connections both on and off Iowa State University’s campus.
Our design team uses warm and rich colors and warm-toned woods to create an inviting environment which welcomes its students. Students are invited to choose their own path of study, whether that be studying surrounded by uplifting peers or sitting comfortably independently in some of our independent study lounges. We strive for students to have control of their environment and have a pleasant experience while away from home .

CONTROL THEORY
Central to our design, the Control Theory states that having a sense of control over our world is crucial to our well-being. With so much going on in the world that is out of our hands, giving users options to put them in control may have a positive impact on their well-being. Our building implements design features such as movable/flexible furniture and offers both collaborative and individual study space options.

WAYFINDING
To ensure visitors and users of the IEOP building are able to easily find their way throughout the entire building, our team implemented a root-like floor wayfinding design. The “primary root” leads users through the main path of travel, and the “secondary roots” guide users to the secondary rooms on the floor.

Luxury Shop-In-Shop
REVIT | AUTOCAD | ENSCAPE | PHOTOSHOP
My design partner, Reed Linse, and I were given the task of designing a shop-in-shop for the luxury fashion house, Loewe . This shop-in-shop is located in La Rinascente, a luxurious department store in Rome, Italy . This entire project was completed while studying abroad at Iowa State’s College of Design in Rome, Italy.
Loewe’s shop-in-shop will embody the fashion house’s energetic , dynamic , and collective essence. We balance a variety of bright accents and neutral Spanish and Italian materials , paying homage to their roots and honoring their current location. To highlight Loewe’s appreciation and dedication to craftsmanship , this shop-in-shop will feature artwork from their ever-growing curated collection . While incorporating all these elements, we ultimately intend for the space to take on a domestic feel and excite conversation amongst visitors.

Dan Levy’s Luxury Vacation Home
REVIT | ENSCAPE | PHOTOSHOP
As an independent designer, I was given the task of designing a luxury vacation home for a celebrity of my choice, Dan Levy. I was assigned to develop floor plans as well as pick out all furniture, finishes and fixtures.
Inspired by Dan Levy’s bold and expressionistic character, this luxury vacation home is designed to capture both Charleston and Dan Levy’s undying charm . Located on a waterfront estate in Charleston, South Carolina , this house invokes comfort and relaxation . Dan can escape the hustle and bustle of life in Los Angeles and retreat to this beautiful waterfront oasis
Staying true to Charleston’s charm, this house features warm and inviting pops of color as well as traditional Charleston wall paneling. Dan has the opportunity to view the beautiful Charleston landscape from almost all rooms in the house. My design is fresh , charming , and lively and supports Dan’s creative spirit.

When choosing furniture for Dan Levy’s house I strive to curate a modern yet classical environment which encapsulates Charleston’s charm and character. Traditional furniture pieces are chosen in modern fabrics in a cohesive warm and cozy color scheme. I want Dan and guests to instantly feel welcomed as they enter this Charleston oasis.
