& FUTURES Careers

In response to the rise of AI and technology, our Careers and Futures Programme has been dedicated to preparing pupils for a dynamic and evolving job market. With insights suggesting that while some roles may be at risk, new opportunities will emerge—especially in technology and fields requiring creativity and human skills—Ms Stoney, our Head of Careers & Futures, has encouraged pupils to focus on developing essential skills that AI struggles to replicate, such as creativity, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving.

OWN YOUR FUTURE CAREERS FAIR

In November, we hosted our annual Own Your Future Career Fair, welcoming over 200 Years 9-13 pupils and parents from Sydenham High and local schools, alongside 37 professionals from a variety of fields, including universities, creative media, accounting, and medicine. Guest speaker Ms Charlotte Stone, from the University of Nottingham, provided invaluable insights into the university application process, fostering meaningful conversations and encouraging pupils to explore careers beyond the conventional routes.

the skills required in the workplace, the Sydenham High Future Skills Programme has been introduced. This initiative helps pupils reflect on the skills they are building through their school activities, with a focus on eight key areas: Teamwork, Leadership, Problem Solving, Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking, Principles and Ethical Judgement, Risk Taking, and Digital Literacy. Pupils have numerous opportunities to develop and showcase these skills through clubs, sports, and leadership roles. To track this progress, the Unifrog platform is used, with teachers providing recognition through stickers for skill demonstrations.

CAREERS INSIGHT WORKSHOP AT LANSONS

In December, Year 12 students attended a careers workshop at Lansons PR firm, organised by Women of the Future. They gained practical insights into public relations, marketing, and communications from professionals including Jessica Warner, a Director at Lansons, and a Social Media Manager, who shared tips for applications and interviews that are relevant across many career paths.

UNIVERSITY VISITS

Year 12 students visited University College London (UCL) for an immersive campus tour, followed by a visit to the Wellcome Collection. These experiences provided valuable insights into university life, research opportunities, and societal reflections on important issues.

GDST LEADERSHIP & ENTERPRISE ADVANCED DIPLOMA

GDST LEAD Conference, with London School of Economics, focussed on developing leadership skills to be authentic and empathetic role models ready for the changing workplace and competitive employment market. Over 150 GDST students participated in the workshop.

These events and initiatives underscore Sydenham High’s commitment to equipping pupils with the skills, confidence, and experiences they need to navigate the ever-changing landscape of AI, technology, and the modern workplace.

Houses

This term, Sydenham High has reignited its House Spirit with a range of engaging activities designed to foster community, creativity, and collaboration among pupils.

The Great Sydenham Bake Off kick-started the term’s house competitions with an impressive 141 entries. Pupils showcased their house spirit through vibrant cakes in red, green, yellow, and blue. The competition was fierce, with Shirreff emerging as the overall winner, closely followed by Grey, Stanley, and Gurney. The enthusiasm and creativity displayed were truly commendable.

In addition to creative competitions, our pupils have been actively supporting charities through their house initiatives, including dodgeball, fashion shows, Just Dance, house karaoke, Christmas jumper day, and more. Each house has selected a charity to focus on this year, contributing to meaningful impact.

Stanley House is supporting St Christopher’s Hospice focusing on providing compassionate care and support for patients and their families facing life-limiting illnesses.

Shirreff House has partnered with Freedom4Girls to combat period poverty and promote menstrual health.

Gurney House has chosen St Mungo’s, a charity dedicated to ending homelessness and supporting individuals in rebuilding their lives.

Grey House is collaborating with Lives Not Knives, aiming to prevent youth violence and empower young people through education and support.

The term also features many creative events, such as From Sketch to Crest: The House Big Draw, where Sixth Form students and Key Stage 3 pupils collaborated to design new house crests, featuring symbolic animals representing their houses: Eagle for Gurney, Stag for Grey, Lion for Stanley, and Dragon for Shirreff.

To bring the term to a joyful close, the houses participated in the Festive Feast, a Christmas party with fun activities such as musical chairs, dance-offs, and Christmas tree decorating competitions.

Overall, the term has been filled with vibrant activities that have strengthened house spirit and encouraged community engagement across all year groups.

Each house is set to embody the spirit of their chosen animal moving forward. The animals and their associated values are as follows:

Gurney: Eagle – mentally and emotionally resilient, generous, and forgiving.

Grey: Stag – passionate, energetic, loyal, and intuitive.

Shirreff: Dragon – keensighted, powerful, brave, protective, and a guardian.

Stanley: Lion – just, wise, bold, courageous, and determined.

Alumnae

& Astrid

At Sydenham High, we deeply value the relationship with our alumnae, who act as mentors and role models for our current students. This term, we are fortunate to welcome back a variety of mentors who continue to support and inspire our girls.

Amanda Wright, founder of Yellowyoyo, has returned to serve as a GDST Lead Mentor for our team, offering invaluable guidance and insight from her extensive experience. Claudia Daventry, a Scotland-based multi-awarded poet and professional writer, has graciously agreed to judge the GDST Laurie Magnus Poetry Prize, enriching our students’ creative journeys with her expertise.

This term, we have welcomed back a variety of inspiring individuals, including Dr Philippa Guppy, a dedicated palliative care doctor, Sophie Barrick, who has pursued a successful pathway in theatre design, and Maddie and Astrid, who shared their experiences studying History of Art at Cambridge University. Additionally, Anna and Aya have offered invaluable insights from their journey in art and design at Kingston School of Art. These alumnae bring a wealth of knowledge and firsthand experience, enriching the creative and academic aspirations of our students.

Dr Philippa Guppy, an alumna of Sydenham High School (Class of 2005), joined our BioChemMedSoc virtually to share her inspiring career journey. Currently a palliative care doctor at the Royal London Hospital, Dr Guppy also works as a senior lecturer at St George’s University for the physician associate programme and is a trustee for Hospice Africa UK, a charity dedicated to providing palliative care and training in Africa.

Dr Guppy spoke passionately about her career path, which included volunteering with Hospice Africa in Uganda and taking the time to find the specialism that suited her best. Her determination to become a doctor— a goal she set during her time at Sydenham High— was evident throughout her talk. Students appreciated the time she took to answer their questions openly and honestly, particularly regarding life as a doctor in the NHS today, including discussions on current affairs like the bill on Assisted Dying.

GENEROSITY OFSpirit

This term, Sydenham High has wholeheartedly embraced its core value of Generosity of Spirit by engaging in meaningful charitable activities and fostering a sense of community.

SUPPORTING THE HARVEST FESTIVAL

On World Food Day, our community came together for the Harvest Festival by donating to Lewisham Foodbank. Last year’s contributions were overwhelming, and we are grateful for the continued support. With over 1 in 5 of the UK population living below the poverty line, our donations provide crucial assistance to those in desperate situations. Our pupils and staff were committed to reflect our school’s generosity of spirit and ensuring that we can support those less fortunate in our extended community.

JEANS FOR GENES

Pupils and staff showed their support for Jeans for Genes Day by wearing denim, raising awareness and funds for individuals living with genetic conditions. This initiative highlighted our school’s unity and compassion, as we worked together to support a worthy cause that affects 1 in 25 people in the UK.

SPREADING FESTIVE CHEER

Our festive celebrations kicked off with Christmas Jumper Day and a heartwarming Christmas lunch, surrounded by festive music, decorations, and delicious food. The day radiated joy and togetherness, symbolising the importance of giving back.

Continuing our cherished tradition, we participated in the Reverse Advent Calendar, encouraging each form to fill gift bags with toys and thoughtful items for King’s College Hospital. These contributions, which embody the spirit of giving, will bring love and joy to those in need this Christmas. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who generously donated, helping us make a meaningful difference during the festive season.

CRISIS AT CHRISTMAS

As 2024 drew to a close, we celebrated Crisis at Christmas, an event showcasing our pupils’ incredible talents through festive performances. From gymnastics to dance, singing, and comedy, the performances were exceptional, creating an atmosphere of unity and unwavering support. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our Year 12 students, we raised valuable funds for Crisis at Christmas, supporting those experiencing homelessness during the festive season.

Together, we continue to embody the values of community, generosity, and celebration, creating meaningful impacts that reflect the true spirit of Sydenham High.
