2025 ENTRY SCHOLARSHIPS Sixth Form

PROGRAMMEAcademic Scholars

Sixth Form Academic scholarships recognise and reward academic excellence. A Sydenham High Academic Scholar will gain a wealth of exciting opportunities designed to expand minds, deepen thinking and cultivate intellectual curiosity.

The Academic Scholars’ Programme aims to cultivate intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and academic excellence in our Sixth Form students. This programme provides a challenging and enriching learning environment to foster the holistic development of students who exhibit exceptional academic potential.

Academic Scholars benefit from:

Attending the Thriving Minds Conference

GDST Oxbridge Conference

Academic competitions related to A Level subjects

Mentoring to support with applications for competitive Higher Education courses

In addition, all Sixth Fom scholars benefit from our Critical Thinking Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to challenge students’ thinking, encouraging them to adopt a broader approach to their perspective of knowledge.

Through the consideration and debate of philosophical propositions such as:

• What did you once believe but now no longer do and why?

• What would you really like to know that you do not know now?

• What difference does it make in your life to believe or not believe something?

Academic Scholars will be challenged to cultivate an academic mindset, and develop their critical thinking skills and cognitive flexibility.

The financial value of an Academic scholarship is usually up to 20% of the annual school fee and is expected to be held continuously throughout Years 12 and 13.

Critical Thinking

BEYOND THE CURRICULUM

In Year 12, students will take part in group discussion sessions on a half termly basis. These sessions will incorporate discussions on ideas and themes linked to the areas of knowledge being explored. In preparation for these group sessions, scholars will be supplied with reading lists and resources to enable them to prepare their critical analysis.

What is knowledge?

• What criteria can we use to distinguish between knowledge, belief and opinion?

• Are there situations where knowing how is more important than knowing that?

• How can we know current knowledge is an improvement on past knowledge?

Is technology important to knowledge?

• How has technology impacted collective memory?

• Does technology allow knowledge to reside outside of human knowers?

• Do social networks reinforce our existing perspectives rather than boost our engagement with diverse perspectives?

How does language allow us to access knowledge

• Is it possible to think or know without language?

• Does the transmission of knowledge from one to another rely on language?

• If language dies, does knowledge die with it?

In Year 13, students choose from one of the following areas to focus on:

• Natural Sciences

• Human Sciences

• Mathematics

• History

• The Arts

Examples of questions they might consider are

• Why might some people regard science as the supreme form of all knowledge?

• Is human behaviour too difficult to study scientifically?

• Is absolute certainty attainable in maths?

• Is all knowledge in some sense historical knowledge?

• Are the arts best seen as a system of knowledge, a type of knowledge or a means of expressing knowledge?

In the Spring Term, students present on their chosen area of knowledge at a showcase event, demonstrating their skills of their knowledge development since the beginning of Year 12.

Example titles might be:

• How has technology impacted collective memory?

• Does technology allow knowledge to reside outside of human knowers?

• Do social networks reinforce our existing perspectives rather than boost our engagement with diverse perspectives?

“IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT KNOWLEDGE, IT’S ABOUT RELEVANT ANALYTICAL SKILLS AND FLEXIBILITY, AND THESE TAKE TIME AND PRACTICE TO DEVELOP”

PROJECT QUALI FICATIONExtended

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is designed to foster independent learning and research skills. It empowers students to delve into a subject of personal interest, cultivating a deeper understanding and appreciation for their chosen topic. The EPQ offers flexibility in format, allowing students to present their findings through a traditional dissertation or a tangible artifact. This qualification is not only an academic pursuit but also a journey of personal and intellectual growth.

The EPQ is highly regarded by universities, providing applicants with a unique opportunity to showcase their research abilities and passion for a specific subject. It equips students with valuable skills that extend beyond the academic realm, preparing them for the challenges of higher education and

beyond. From topics covering cancer research, the aerodynamic efficiency of Formula One cars and the Mughal Empire, the scope for academic enrichment is vast.

By taking responsibility for the choice, design and decision making of an individual project, students:

• become more critical, reflective and independent learners

• develop and apply decision-making and problem-solving skills

• increase their planning, research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation skills

• learn to apply technologies confidently

• demonstrate creativity, initiative and enterprise

“WORKING TOWARDS A PARTICULAR PIECE OF WORK LIKE THE EPQ HELPS STUDENTS FOCUS THEIR SUPRA-CURRICULAR LEARNING IN AN AREA THEY ARE PARTICULARLY INTERESTED IN”
