inspiring service for others
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
As a Mercy institution, service opportunities are offered across the campus community – as a year-round student club or a trip to a city in the U.S. or beyond – to provide a service to those in need. Participating encourages students to step outside of their comfort zones, see the world from a different perspective and reflect on the deeper meaning of service to others.
FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE
As part of Cougar Trax, a two-day program for first-year students, and Transitions, a first-year course that provides support and knowledge to new students, students participate in a number of community-wide service projects both on and off campus. These projects help students to build upon our Catholic, Mercy mission and learn about the importance of why they are undertaking the work, setting them up for a future of servant leadership.
SERVICE WEEK
Each year in March, the University community participates in service initiatives tied closely to the critical concerns of the Sisters of Mercy: Anti-Racism, Earth, Immigration, Non-Violence and Women. As students engage during Service Week, students develop competencies such as self-development, critical thinking, equity and inclusion, leadership and teamwork. The SXU core values, especially hospitality and service, are woven into their characters so they may go out into the world and do good.
Academic and Career Resources
CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER
The Career Development Center supports students in their search for meaningful career paths through self-assessment and career planning, internship resources, alumni networking opportunities, and job-search-skills training. Programming is focused on helping students prepare for the world of work through personal career counseling and assessment, hands-on workshops, career information panels, and opportunities for students to connect with potential employers and graduate school options.
CENTER FOR LEARNING AND STUDENT SUPPORT
The Center for Learning and Student Support provides academic support through coaching, tutoring and writing consultations. The center aims to provide individualized, student-centered sessions focused on developing and enhancing students’ academic abilities within their specific courses in coordination with their professors. Services are available free of charge to currently enrolled SXU students and include academic support, one-on-one writing consultations, peer tutoring, and more.

STUDENT ADVISING CENTER
At Saint Xavier University, academic advising is a pivotal component of the educational experience, used to empower students to think critically and to explore and identify academic and career interests. Advisors will provide guidance and recommendations, answering questions about academic goals, course selection and planning as they assist students in registering for courses.

what i’m doing
Amr Alshatnawi, Major: Computer Science

HIS MOST VALUABLE EXPERIENCE AS A STUDENT:
My most valuable experience from my time at SXU has been the ability to experiment and innovate freely. I was able to present research from my internship with NASA to the most influential event in the world dedicated to the advancement of Earth and space sciences! I also participated in SXU’s Research Expo and developed a software product that detects the number of open and empty parking spots on campus, Project PARKA. I explored and developed solutions to real-world challenges. SXU helped prepare me for a career in artificial intelligence. I’ll soon be returning to NASA and joining the scientists and engineers at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston to work on exciting and challenging projects.

The SXU Experience
My experience at SXU was beyond anything I could have imagined. The community we have built is like no other – fun, inclusive, and fruitful. My courses aligned well with my career interests, and I participated in on-campus activities like Paint Jams, where you join with the other students to have a fun time painting on huge wooden canvases together. I also had the opportunity to design the 2024 senior thesis exhibition postcards. My experience opened up my mind and prepared me for the life I wish to achieve: being an artist, expressing creativity, and making art for myself and others.
– Alyssa Surdyk, Graphic Design
SXU's exceptional accounting program stood out as the perfect match for my academic aspirations, offering a comprehensive curriculum and opportunities essential for success. The financial aid provided by the University further solidified my choice. The welcoming and supportive campus culture at SXU resonated with my values, creating an environment where I felt empowered to thrive. SXU's strong reputation and affiliations with prominent public accounting companies enhanced my confidence in the institution and presented invaluable networking opportunities. SXU embodies everything I was seeking in a university.”
