Living our Catholic, Mercy MISSION
SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES
As a Mercy institution, service opportunities are offered across the campus community – as a year-round student club or a trip to a city in the U.S. or beyond – to provide a service to those in need. Participating encourages students to step outside of their comfort zones, see the world from a different perspective and reflect on the deeper meaning of service to others.
FAITH OPPORTUNITIES
SXU offers many opportunities for students to pray, share their faith, and encourage each other's growth and transformation. Sunday and Wednesday Masses, virtual prayer sessions, in-person prayer services, scripture reflections, and retreats help bring the community together and facilitate students' spiritual and religious journeys. SXU welcomes all, regardless of faith tradition, to participate in liturgy, prayer, and spiritual reflection. A Muslim Prayer Space is located on campus and McDonough Chapel is open to all for quiet, peaceful reflection.
SXU TRADITIONS
Each spring, the University celebrates Mission Day, an annual event that highlights the University’s core values of service, excellence, hospitality and integrity while each fall, the University celebrates Spirit of Mercy Day, a tradition honoring the day Sisters of Mercy founder Catherine McAuley opened the doors of the first House of Mercy on Baggot Street in Dublin, Ireland.
Saint Xavier is grounded in the ministry of its founding Sisters, who were inspired by their Catholic faith to serve others. The University’s rich traditions create unique and memorable experiences for students and strengthen SXU’s mission-focused community.

what i’m doing

HIS MOST VALUABLE EXPERIENCE AS A STUDENT:
My most valuable experience from my time at SXU has been the ability to experiment and innovate freely. I was able to present research from my internship with NASA to the most influential event in the world dedicated to the advancement of Earth and space sciences! I also participated in SXU’s Research Expo and developed a software product that detects the number of open and empty parking spots on campus, Project PARKA. I explored and developed solutions to real-world challenges. SXU helped prepare me for a career in artificial intelligence. I’ll soon be returning to NASA and joining the scientists and engineers at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston to work on exciting and challenging projects.

The SXU Experience
My experience at SXU was beyond anything I could have imagined. The community we have built is like no other – fun, inclusive, and fruitful. My courses aligned well with my career interests, and I participated in on-campus activities like Paint Jams, where you join with the other students to have a fun time painting on huge wooden canvases together. I also had the opportunity to design the 2024 senior thesis exhibition postcards. My experience opened up my mind and prepared me for the life I wish to achieve: being an artist, expressing creativity, and making art for myself and others.
– Alyssa Surdyk, Graphic Design
SXU's exceptional accounting program stood out as the perfect match for my academic aspirations, offering a comprehensive curriculum and opportunities essential for success. The financial aid provided by the University further solidified my choice. The welcoming and supportive campus culture at SXU resonated with my values, creating an environment where I felt empowered to thrive. SXU's strong reputation and affiliations with prominent public accounting companies enhanced my confidence in the institution and presented invaluable networking opportunities. SXU embodies everything I was seeking in a university.
