Following directly on from the success of awards evening, we look forward in September to hosting our rescheduled SWSAS Golf Day, and our first Indigenous Talent Identification Day. The support of Underwriting Agencies of Australia (UAA) and the Steadfast Group as naming rights partners for the day, and also the Western Sydney University which has committed its sport science students to undertake sports testing, have all been unwavering in committing their assistance for the day to be a success. As has the commitment given by the Illawarra Hawks, Netball NSW, and our very own highly skilled volunteer sport coaching staff, who are contributing their valuable time, to provide sport skill sessions as part of the day. You will no doubt read throughout this edition, our success has now permeated across the Volleyball court, with our inaugural program winning the Junior and Senior boys divisions of the Volleyball NSW / Regional Academies of Sport Challenge. Whilst our Netball squad is ramping up its preparations for the Regional Academy Netball Challenge, to be held at Port Macquarie later in September. The Academy is now well and truly in the planning phase for what is shaping up as an even bigger and again better year, as we see most sports across the State, slowly returning to Makenormality.sure you stay tuned for the nomination and trial dates for our 2022-2023 sport programs, opening shortly.

Sport Administration Officer Catarina Di Ramio recently caught up with the ever-humble Marley, as she powered through an off-season strength and conditioning "challenge" with Academy Strength and Conditioning partner FitClinic, and trainer Aaron King.
Being able to be at your peak performance on and off the field is vital for any athlete to succeed. And for Academy AFLW athlete Marley Rhodes, finding that extra edge can be the difference between riding the boundary benches, or taking the final mark and kicking the match-winning goal.
You have just completed your second year with the South West Sydney Academy of Sport program, What has been the highlight of your time within the AcademyAFLWprogramsofar?
All of the new people, coaches and team mates I've met, and the people that the Academy bring in that specialise in certain areas; like running and sprinting techniques with Emmanuel, and kicking skills with Tim from Kicking Dynamics. So Marley, you having been playing AFLW for just over three years, Is there anyone that comes to mind who has been the biggest influence in playing AFLW and getting you to where you are now? I don't think I've had one significant influence. Everybody who has been on my journey in the AFLW has all had some type of impact on the player I am today.
MarleyRhodesMARKOFA CHAMPION

Through the Academy's partnership with FitClinic, you have been able to participate in a series of four week Challenges... how has this opportunity for a dedicated Strength and Conditioningprogrambeenableto benefityourowndevelopment?
The strength training helps with my tackling and tapping the ball in the ruck. If I had time to focus more on lower body strength, it would also help with my running, and gaining power behind my kicks.
If you were not playing AFLW, what would you be doingwithyoursparetime?
Honestly I'd either still be doing dance full-time; or even considering another sport like basketball, which I did for a little while in 2018., before I tried AFL.
I don't have a particular favourite drill.... The good thing though is at club, SWSAS and the GWS Giants Development Academy, the drills and training sessions are all basically the same; which does make it easy to transition between them all. With your talent and the opportunities you have ahead of you, What are your goals forthefuture?
I would like to get to the top of my ability and skills when playing AFL, and even just develop my fitness skills outside of the AFL. I would like to potentially be drafted into the AFLW. However if that doesn't work out, I'd like to find a job that keeps me on my toes physically, preferably, and not a too mentally challenging one!
You have also recently been named in the GWS Giants Development squad, and have been training as a part of the GWS Academy. What Is your favourite warmup drill or exercise, and what are the key differences (or similarities) between Club, SWSAS and GWS?
It benefits my own development in so many ways but especially out on the field with keeping my fitness up with the conditioning for my position as ruck, which involved a lot of running around the whole field.

Throughout 2021, the South West Sydney Academy of Sport, with the support of Platinum Partner South32 Illawarra Metallurgical Coal and the Australian Sports Foundation, developed "SWSAS ThroughCARES". this initiative, the South West Sydney Academy of Sport aims to provide support to underprivileged athletes within the South West Sydney Academy region, who may be experiencing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, SWSAS CARES has identified the need to further support our Indigenous and Culturally Diverse athletes by utilising funds received to offset the costs of athletes levies and uniform fees so that they can participate within our sport, community and cultural education programs. Through the Australian Sports Foundation and Play for Purpose, you can now support the Academy by either donating directly to the SWSAS CARES Foundation, or by purchasing raffle tickets to win some amazing prizes. Both options are fully tax deductible, with funds raised going directly to athletes of the South West Sydney Academy of Sport.
