Full Steam Ahead for 2025 Sport Seasons
After what can seem like a lengthy nominations and trials process, which took place during September to November, the Academy held two induction sessions for an initial intake of 230 athletes across the Academy's 13 sport squad programs presently underway. And in doing so, officially launched it's 2024/25 program season
Held on Saturday morning, 26 October, the first induction took place at the home of the Academy’s Education Partner, Western Sydney University’s Campbelltown Campus. Athletes from 3x3 Basketball, Basketball, Golf, Indigenous Athlete Talent Program, Netball, Netball Umpires, Softball, Triathlon and Wests Future Stars Programs as well as parents, guardians and coach and support staff joined together for education on the Academy’s values, policies, and requirements.
This session was then replicated on Friday evening, 13 December, where the Academy's incoming BMX, Hockey and Volleyball programs undertook their program induction.
The 2024/25 Academy Induction's were full of insight on the Academy, delivered by CEO Gerry Knights and Academy Staff, As the Academy outlined it's vision for the year ahead The many expectation’s of being an Academy athlete were also presented, including a focus on the Academy's core values of Commitment, Opportunity, Respect and Integrity.
Following on from this presentation, those present then ventured head first into a series of targeted breakout sessions for athletes, with parents and guardians also participating in their own targeted education session, aimed at the 'Parents role in their athlete's journey’ .
The first break out room had athletes share in the wisdom and experience of Judo Olympic Athletes and motivational speakers, Josh and Nathan Katz, who, fresh from the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, provided athletes an insight into the challenges, and potential success available through managing their athletic journey.

Meanwhile in the second athlete breakout room, an insightful discussion took place, led by Madalyn Incognito from education provider, Condor Performance on how to manage stress, and implement the sport ‘thought’ process within the athletes journey.
The inductions were concluded by Academy Strength and Conditioning Partner Bounce Back Physiotherapy & Osteopathy’s Ben Fuller, who provided a presentation to Parents on how to assist their athletes in identifying and utilising a strength and conditioning program.
The Academy look's forward to seeing each one of it's inducted athletes progress in their respective program seasons ahead as their Academy training programs start to ramp up.

Corporate Golf Day a Driving Success
The South West Sydney Academy of Sport held its annual Corporate Golf Day on Friday 15 November, with the support of event partners Kelly+Partners Chartered Accountants and the Campbelltown Golf Club.
Despite the at-times gloomy weather, the showers held off, allowing the Academy’s Corporate Partner network to truly embrace the day with enthusiasm, and at times great success
Following the now traditional hearty breakfast, the Campbelltown Golf Course came alive with perfected swings, albeit in between a few spectacular misses, showcasing the wonderful community spirit that exists between the Academy and its generous partners.
The day is definitely about the Academy being able to give back to our community partners. With the Academy welcoming fifteen teams prior to the days commencement. Without our many partners, we would not be able to provide the quality of sport programs and services to athletes within our local community, so thank you.
The day was a testament to the power of teamwork, where focus on making the final putt was seamlessly intertwined with hearty laughter, even more so as each competitor tallied up their scorecards over a generous Australian BBQ lunch and drinks back at the clubhouse , where competitors also shared many a story of the day’s escapades. One team had a great story of losing over a dozen golf balls coming across the final, let’s say water hazard
The Academy was also excited to feature its incoming 2025 Golf Squad as a part of the day, with athletes Priya Singh, Jack Harod, Kobey Thomas, Hazel Kruger and Ariana Abella taking part alongside the corporate contingent, however it was athlete Libby Newcombe who made the best of the day, taking out the Female Longest Drive, highlighting the strength and quality within the Academy’s Golf program.
The Golf Day provides a unique opportunity for our athletes to participate alongside our partners, in not just sharing their journey as an athlete, but providing a few tips along the way.

And as the final scores were counted, several fortunate teams emerged victorious, including GM³ - Appin and Dendrobium Mines Appin who took out both the Kelly+Partners Chartered Accountants Spirit of Golf Corporate Cup, and the Industry Partners Cup after a hot contest with not just their fellow GM3 team, but with SIMEC Tahmoor Coking Coal.
Local knowledge once again might have played a part for the Campbelltown Golf Club team who, following on from their scratch win in 2023, held on to take out the 2024 Overall Nett Winners prize just ahead of Wests League Club, and Western Sydney University who remained hot on the trail all day, finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The Academy’s Corporate Golf Day event partner Kelly + Partners who’s team held off the Academy Golf Squads late surge to win Scratch on countback, with the South West Voice team finishing a respectable fourteenth, just ahead of the ever improving Macarthur Credit Union

Hitting the Fastball in 2025
The South West Sydney Academy of Sport is excited to announce that it has formed a partnership with local Baseball organisation RBI Australia, to deliver a pilot Baseball program within the Academy, in 2025.
Jumping at the chance to partner with the Academy was RBI Australia Managing Director Matt Redman, was quoted as saying RBI is keen to see a high-performance Baseball program within our region and we are happy to be involved, and will do our best to support and enhance the Academy’s program where possible
Whilst the Baseball program will be a new venture for the Academy, Baseball athletes are in fact no stranger to the high-performance support and education programs, with several athletes currently, or previously involved within the Academy’s Future Stars program.
Academy CEO Gerry Knights is also supportive of the move, confirming that Baseball athletes have been able to be a part of the Academy's Future Stars program for a number of years now, culminating in Adam Bates, being named the NSW Regional Academies of Sport 'Athlete of the Year' in 2024.
This continued interest and success, within the region, left the Academy in no doubt that a full sport program was indeed a positive way forward.
That fact, alongside the decision of Olympic Games organisers to include both Baseball and Softball into the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, and the Academy recently being recognised as an Official Training Centre of the Australian Olympic Committee, assisted in the ease of the decision-making process.
Through additional funding provided in 2023-2024 by the NSW Government and Office of Sport, the Academy has been able to review its existing programs and governance processes, in order to increase the ability to deliver additional sporting programs and opportunities to our region's young athletes
Following on from a call out at the Academy's Annual Graduation and Sport Awards Dinner in August, where Knights reached out for a partner to come on board and sponsor a 'new program'; the Macarthur Credit Union, via its CEO David Cadden answered the call by increasing its existing partnership with the Academy.
In doing so, hit a home run by reaffirming his organisation’s commitment to the development of the region's talented junior athletes, by taking on the program 'naming rights' partnerships of not just the new Baseball program, but also aligning with the Academy's existing Softball program.
The alignment with both the Macarthur Credit Union and RBI Australia across both Baseball and Softball is an incredible win for all parties
Whilst the process to implement the Baseball program has taken nearly twelve months from concept to mapping out the pilot program structure, the Academy is excited to see the vision take shape and become a reality to provide a high-performance Baseball program for male and female athletes, within the South West Sydney Region
And the journey towards a program does not stop there, with Knights outlining an ongoing community consultation process as vital component to ensure the program’s long-term future.
As with all new Academy programs, the next step in ensuring the pilot program is a success and remains a year-to-year fixture, is now the ongoing consultation with the region’s local Baseball association, clubs and state sporting organisation
Critical steps in the programs development to ensure it complements the on-field training, education and representative programs. Whilst also assisting the association to meet its athlete development needs within the South West Sydney region.
Expressions of Interest for the 2025 ‘The Mac’ Baseball pilot program are now open, with further information on trials and the pilot program structure expected to be released in February. All things going smoothly, trials are proposed to take place during March 2025 for male and female Baseball athletes who turn 13-16 years of age in 2025.
Interested Baseball coach and support staff are also encouraged to express their interest in being a part of the pilot program, with a highly comprehensive coach development program, specifically designed for their ongoing overall development available.
Further information and Expression of Interest forms are available on the Academy’s website, or by following the link to

Athletes Take On Transformational Challenge
A very lucky group of athletes from across the wide variety of sport programs within the South West Sydney Academy of Sport have had the opportunity of a lifetime by partnering with corporate partner MAPP and participating in a week-long Readiness Camp in Jindabyne, throughout early November.
Readiness Camps are designed to provide high-quality targeted athlete support by combining the thrill of sports with the transformative power of mindset and performance coaching, aimed at cultivating a greater self-confidence, and leadership skills while forming bonds with fellow athletes that will extend far beyond the camp.
The eleven Athletes who undertook the opportunity to attend this camp, the first of its kind for the Academy, didn’t quite know what to expect when they entered, however came out the end of the camp with new friendships, and a greater confidence within themselves and their abilities.
The camp, led by renowned mindset performance coach Simon Williams, and champion snow-boarder Ryan Tierne, led athletes through five days of activities that challenged each athlete to not just face their fears, but conquer them
Mixing up thrill seeking activities such as abseiling, white water rafting and wakeboarding, and the challenge of hiking 13km to the top of Mt Kosciuszko, plus yoga and breathwork; the camp provided athletes the opportunity to develop new skills that will aid their mental performance by staying calm under pressure, as well as control their nerves.
Each activity provided athletes with a new challenge that relied on the group of athletes to work together to conquer individual and collective fears, or simply fight through exhaustion and fatigue to achieve a personal or team goal, further strengthening friendships and team camaraderie amongst the group.

Following each day’s activities, athletes had the opportunity to work together to complete their school homework, before sharing in the journeys of high profiled sports persons such as Olympian skateboarder Hayley Wilson and Paralympic snowboarder Ben Tudhope.
As well as gaining an appreciation of the media with a session led by Channel Nine’s Mitch Tomlinson, who took athletes through a session on developing their own personal brand and media skills. Further education sessions on deep relaxation, mindfulness and nutrition complimented the athletes busy schedule, as each athlete grew in their own self-assessment and reflections.
The most exciting part of the camp was one athlete who absolutely petrified of the water, but by the end of the day on the lake, found himself wakeboarding at high speed behind the boat, and then participating in the whitewater rafting the next day. The camp not only provided immediate mindset skills, but through the outcomes learned in the challenges, can really change an athletes trajectory within their selfbelief and confidence, attributes that they will rely on later within their own journey.
The Readiness Camp concept is one which the Academy hopes will become a permanent fixture on the Academy’s calendar which will be open to any athlete from within the Academy’s varied sport programs to attend.
Opportunities such as the Readiness Camps are an important part of the Academy’s program as we aim to assist athletes to continue to challenge their limits for the benefit of not just their athletic ability, but within their own personal life.

A Fresh Wave of Training at the Beach

the demands of their sport This type of training also boosts cardiovascular efficiency and promotes balanced muscular development, reducing the risk of injury.
Adaptability fosters better hormonal regulation, aiding recovery and maintaining peak performance under pressure.
Perhaps most importantly, it sharpens the connection between mind and body, improving decision-making speed and precision.
Building adaptability isn’t just about excelling in the moment, it’s about cultivating a resilient athlete prepared for the challenges ahead Sport Program Manager Catarina Julius and Sport Administration Officer Tahlia Febbo, were fortunate enough to witness the start of this process, labelling the initial session a “resounding success.”
The energy and commitment shown by everyone in these beach sessions is truly inspiring. It’s exciting to see such a well-structured program taking shape, and it will pave the way for outstanding outcomes for our athletes
As the Academy looks forward to continuing this program, offering athletes unique experiences that go beyond conventional training, it applauds all who attended for their effort and enthusiasm And eagerly awaits the impact of this exciting training initiative in athletes’ respective sports
The four pre-Christmas sessions at Bulli Beach has set a high standard for what lies ahead on the journey to athletic excellence and throughout January, the Academy will look to take another step (or climb as the case may be), introducing athletes to the Greenhills Sand Dunes at Cronulla.

Hockey Sweeps Success through Enhanced Regional Academies Partnership
The South West Sydney Academy of Sport is excited to play a crucial part in the delivery of an enhanced agreement with Hockey NSW and Regional Academies of Sport, culminating in a recent announcement of a new strategic partnership, marking a significant milestone in the development of future hockey talent across the state.
Under this agreement, Regional Academies will become the primary delivery network for the Hockey NSW pathway programs, offering young athletes vital opportunities to progress within the sport. The partnership aims to nurture and develop talent, providing aspiring hockey players with the training, support and resources needed to advance to state-level teams and compete on national platforms.
The program specifically target twos age groups, U/16 and U/18, with Regional Academies hosting training, development and education sessions that align with Hockey NSW’s pathway. The primary goal is to offer athletes a high-performance environment to refine their skills and enhance their chances of State team selection. This will be achieved through access to quality coaching, technical training, and performance support services, including nutrition and psychology education
Each year, the program will culminate in major events that serve as talent identification opportunities for State team selection. These include the ‘Your Local Club’ Regional Academy Games for the U16 age group athletes not participating in the U16 National Championships. Thereby providing fringe athletes the opportunity for high level of competition, to refine their skills for future state selection.
A separate Academy Challenge tournament will be held for the U18 age group, where athletes will have an opportunity to be talent identified, as well as gain experience in a final hit out ahead of the U18 Nationals.
The partnership also aims to strengthen the regional coaching framework, with coaches involved in the program receiving educational support aimed at enhancing their capabilities in not just nurturing athletic talent, but developing their own coaching skills
Umpire development will also be a key focus, ensuring that officiating talent grows alongside player development
Regional Academies are excited to partner with Hockey NSW to deliver a program that will open doors for young athletes in regional areas. Our goal is to provide them with the resources and opportunities they need to progress through the hockey ranks
Hockey NSW CEO Matthew Bulkeley was quoted as saying, Hockey NSW is thrilled to extend its partnership with Regional Academies as a key part of its new strategic direction and officially partner with them to enhance the development opportunities provided for Hockey across the state.
This partnership will allow Hockey NSW's Pathway Program to continue to provide opportunities to Under 16 and Under 18-yearolds within the footprint of each Regional Academy of Sport. This is a very important strategic direction of Hockey NSW's performance pillar, and Hockey NSW are excited to continue working together with Regional Academies to achieve this.
The Academy has had Hockey as a key part of its Academy family, and has supported Hockey athletes from our local region since 1997.
With a long list of former Academy athletes who have not just represented NSW, but Australia at Commonwealth and Olympic Games levels.
We are looking forward to continuing our local region's athletes journey, and deliver this program through this enhanced partnership with Hockey NSW, Regional Academies, and with the continued support of the local Metro South West Hockey Association.

The South West Sydney Academy of Sport is thrilled to announce Andrew (Panda) Parker, as its 2024/2025 Club Menangle Hockey Program Head Coach.
Andrew brings an unparalleled level of expertise and enthusiasm to the position
He has all the attributes to lead our coaching team, including a wealth of experience and a remarkable 25- year highly successful coaching track record, across multiple senior and junior age groups.
He is a current member of the Hockey NSW U18 coaching staff; the U18 HNSW Indoor Coach; a HNSW selector across multiple age groups; COD lead coach, and MSWHA development coach.
"We are confident that his exceptional talent and experience will be a tremendous asset to our team, and we look forward to achieving great success together under his leadership." said Academy CEO Gerry Knights.
Welcome aboard, Andrew.

Triathlon Racing Through Tough Season
The Academy SIMEC Tahmoor Coking Coal Triathlon Squad has oagain demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and outstanding skill at recent events in the NSW Triathlon Pathway Billigence Series, delivering exceptional performances across challenging conditions. And in turn showcasing their hard work and dedication to the sport.
Competing at Round 3 of the series, hosted by the Macarthur Triathlon Club, the team faced scorching temperatures but rose to the occasion with determination and grit. This local round saw incredible achievements, including six athletes qualifying for the Duathlon Finals. Leading the charge was Dante Picken, who claimed victory in the Non-Draft Duathlon Class, a stellar testament to his commitment and prowess.
Other outstanding results from Round 3 included Phoebe Grocholsky in her first competitive outing, who placed 5th overall in the Non-Draft Duathlon and secured 2nd place in the Female Junior category In addition to Lachlan Arentz, Matthew Fosse, and Alyssa Persen, who all advanced to the Duathlon ‘D’ Finals, Zoe Bruce who qualified for the ‘C’ Finals, and Kade Burgess and Phoenix Jackson making it to the ‘B’ Finals.
Notably, three former Academy athletes now competing with the NSW Emerging Talent Squad achieved remarkable results, with Bodhi Jackson: 4th overall in the Male Junior B category, Joshua Persen: 8th overall in the Male Junior B category, and Harry Lindbom: 10th overall in the Male Junior category.
The home track advantage clearly energised the squad, propelling them to impressive outcomes that reflected their relentless training and team spirit
Earlier in the series, the squad competed in Round 2 held in Orange in early November, where the squad delivered stellar performances across swim, bike, run, and aquathon events. The standout result of the weekend was the Academy Youth team, featuring Matthew Fosse, Alyssa Persen, and Phoenix Jackson, finishing on the podium and claiming 3rd in the Mixed Team Relay
The squad’s next test awaits as they return to Wollongong on Australia Day for the Annual Aquathon, before heading to Penrith for Round 4 of the Billigence series in early February.
With the momentum from recent successes and the invaluable experience gained, the Academy athletes are poised to excel once more.

Softball Getting Summer Ready
‘The Mac Credit Union’ Softball program has launched into their Strength and Conditioning Sessions with Academy partner FitClinic throughout the latter part of 2024, aiming to boost not only physical fitness but also mental resilience in preparation for the upcoming year This initiative underscores the program's commitment to developing well-rounded athletes capable of excelling both on and off the field.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Fit Clinic for their invaluable expertise in designing and implementing sport-specific training programs Their tailored approach ensures that each athlete receives the guidance needed to enhance their performance, reduce injury risks, and build a strong foundation for the demands of the softball season.
As we approach the Christmas holidays and the more traditional off-season for junior sports, we encourage all athletes to take full advantage of these Strength and Conditioning Sessions Additionally, incorporating beach fitness activities and home-based conditioning exercises during the summer break will be essential in maintaining progress and building upon the gains made during the year
Physiologically, staying active during the holiday season helps maintain muscle strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility key components for peak athletic performance. Conditioning through consistent exercise prevents detraining, a phenomenon where athletes lose their fitness levels when they stop training
It also aids in managing body composition and energy levels, ensuring athletes return to the field in optimal shape. Moreover, keeping up with physical activity over the break can enhance recovery, boost immunity, and improve mental focus as athletes prepare for the new season.
The holiday season can pose unique challenges to an athlete’s mental discipline. With festive gatherings, tempting treats, and relaxed routines, it’s easy to let habits slip. However, maintaining a structured approach to fitness during this period is an opportunity to strengthen mental resilience. Staying committed to holiday training plans fosters self-discipline and reinforces a growth mindset.

It’s a chance to set the tone for the upcoming year, proving to oneself that success stems from consistency and dedication, even during times of leisure.
A number of programs have also been provided with comprehensive off-season and holiday strength and conditioning plans Athletes are expected to commit to these programs and give their best effort to ensure they return stronger, fitter, and better prepared for the challenges ahead.
Beyond physical preparation, the Mac Credit Union Softball program emphasises mental toughness and team cohesion. These sessions will look to offer an opportunity for athletes to build camaraderie, establish shared experiences, and foster a mindset of growth and perseverance.
As we look toward the new season, let’s keep the momentum going. Together, we’ll ensure our athletes are ready to take on 2024 with determination and excellence.

Coach Conference Key Culture, Connection, and Long Term Success
o o g o o t e success u au c o t e cade y s Coac Co ect o t y oo eb a s ate 2024, the Academy has added a new dimension with a series of face to face Coach Mentoring sessions
Launched on 13th December, what's been dubbed as "Phase Two” of the Academy's Coach Connect Network saw the Academy's coach and support staff come together and meet each other to not just discuss their program challenges or sports intricacies, but also to provide an opportunity to connect. Not just with their own coaching staff, but with a mentor, or coaching peer from within the Academy's many sporting programs.
The Coach Connect Network is there to encourage our Academy Coach and Support Staff to share ideas. The Academy can provide advice and direction from an office and framework perspective, but to have coaches be able to share training, team building and athlete management ideas amongst themselves is key. At the end of the day, it is the coach and support staff who see the athletes more frequently during training
The Academy has a Coach and Technical Advisory Group, made up of five individuals who are highly experienced within the coach development and mentorship space. Who effectively drive the presentation of the Coach Connect webinar series, as well as provide coach development and education advice to Academy staff CTAG, as its affectionately known, also exist to provide mentorship to the Academy's coach and support staff, from being available for a quick chat to run an idea past, a visit to a training session to observe the coach in practice, to assistance in developing an athlete or even coach development plan, members are always eager to assist in the overall development of coaches within the Academy.
Coaching is a far greater responsibility that just teaching athletes sport fundamentals, or x's and o's as the old adage goes, it is now about adding in the y's, like athlete wellbeing, health, load management and goal setting, and these are aspects that all coaches experience across all sports. It makes sense to have our coaches connect and share.
The Academy is already in the thick of planning more face to face Coach Connect Mentoring sessions, with a day Conference planned for Sunday 9 February 2025, which will include guest speakers, as well as invited coach and support staff from neighbouring Illawarra and Western Sydney Academies of Sport, along with coaches from local South West Sydney clubs and associations.
