This magazine has been edited by the South West Sydney Academy of Sport for the greater South West Sydney community.

This extends from the previous Academy quarterly newsletter for 2021 bringing the latest sport and news together from August to October 2021.

Excitement builds as Brisbane is named to host 2032 Your local Academy is very excited about the recent announcement of Brisbane winning the right to host the 2032 Olympic Games. After six years of planning, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) supported the Queensland city to host the event, by 72 votes to 5.

We are one of nine independent Academies in NSW, including the Central Coast, Hunter, Illawarra, North Coast, Northern Inland, Southern, Western Region, and Western Sydney. And the NSW Government via the Office of Sport, operates an additional two Academies, the South East and Far West Academies of Sport.

We know that the average age of an Olympian is 25-27 years old, meaning the current age of future athletes that will compete in Brisbane is around the 14-to-16-year age group.

This is the average age of our athletes currently training in an Academy program. This young crop of athletes with the right support, will reach their prime years in time for our next home ‘Australian’ Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In operation for well over three decades now, the Regional Academy system has regularly produced Australia’s Future Champions. Highlighting the success of this well-regarded pre-elite athlete production line, is the number of athlete alumni that represented Australia at recent Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In total 34 pulled on Aussie Green and Gold colours at Rio de Janeiro and PyeongChang, with a total of 30 past and present athletes spotlighting in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games.

There is a need for ongoing investment for long term success to ‘occur now’ - and to be guaranteed for a number of years. Every young Australian regardless of their location deserves access to world class training to make their ‘Dreams’ of sporting greatness possible.

And the Regional Academy collective system allows for high-quality, cost-effective programs that are delivered locally, at a fraction of the cost that each individual sporting organisation can.

While at the same time providing the content specialists, and what is regarded as best practice service delivery. If the Regional Academy network didn’t exist, athletes could be potentially lost in the sport system.

In NSW, from a political standpoint, sport appropriately sits in what is known as a Stronger Communities Government Cluster, where Youth Development, Communities and Justice and Multiculturalism also belong.

It must be recognised that our Regional Academy Youth development programs are worth so much more than Sport. We know that we are creating job ready, mentally resilient people. We have strong leadership programs and the benefits of being in our programs far outweigh that of just sporting skill development.

Locally, these accomplishments could not be achieved without the support of many individuals and organisations, including our very own coaching staff members, and many corporate partners.

And our Academy 'Naming Rights' partner the Campbelltown Catholic Club and Platinum Partner SOUTH32, plus our local Councils and all of our highly supportive corporate partners, who have continued to support us during the COVID-19 pandemic, and its many challenges.

Academy looks to continue Olympic Legacy through 2032 FULL ARTICLE

Many athletes, coaches and parents associated with our local South West Sydney Academy of Sport, are excited for so many reasons, about the potential to participate in some way, in a home Olympic Games.

And, with the extended Greater Sydney lockdown forcing an early conclusion to some of our 2021 programs; the Academy has been spurred on and is firmly into planning for not only its many 2022 athlete sport programs; but now strengthening the framework and support of the Academy's future success, with Brisbane 2032 a fixed representative target.

"As Academy CEO Gerry Knights mentioned in the "From the CEO's Desk", that sport experts know that athletes hitting their peak in recent Olympic Games are generally aged in the 25-27 year age bracket.

Yet as we saw in Tokyo, with the introduction of additional sports, such as skateboarding and BMX that appeal to youth audiences; combined with increased development pathways aimed to peak athletes earlier, the average age by 2032 could be closer to 22-24 years old.

Therefore, a local, 'decade long' pathway, with a strong continued working partnership with the Australian and NSW Institutes of Sports, state sporting organisations and the NSW Government, will continue to be vital to the long-term future success, of the Academy and its athletes.

"The South West Sydney Academy was formed in the years leading up to the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with then Academy Para-athlete Patrick Donachie (OAM) a member of the 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay swimming team that won Gold," said Knights.

Who added that the Academy's Olympic success continued in 2004, where three former athletes, Bronwyn Eagles, Clinton Hill, and Jim Piper, competed in Athens.

Due to the situation in Australia we were unable to come together as a full team, so we left a week earlier for Japan.

Training on the courts, knowing we were going to play on at the Paralympics was exciting yet daunting at the same time. One of the really good things about being in a team sport is having your team mates to support and encourage you.

I’ve been to Nationals and Worlds and I thought I was prepared for Tokyo.

But wow it’s like nothing you could imagine.

Living in a building with elite athletes hearing their stories and where they come from compete, just kept you on track to accomplish what you were there for.

Our first game I seemed to be focusing on “have I got my equipment, uniform, running through plays.

Have I tied my hair up short enough to comply with the rules? “ It wasn’t until they started playing ACDC’s Thunderstruck as we came out that it all became real for me.

Academy Netball Scores at Online Challenges FEATURE ARTICLE Sport and September usually go hand in hand, with the first spring month generally coinciding with the peak final’s series for a number of community sporting codes. September is also the month that the South West Sydney Academy of Sport ‘Walker Corporation’ Netball squad heads to the country to compete in the Regional Academy Challenge. An event that Academy athlete Abbey Finlay was looking forward too, until the lockdown.

Yet, it is throughout this lockdown that Abbey, along with twenty-three fellow squad mates have not abandoned their team training, but instead adopted weekly online training and support sessions. Whilst

conditioned for a training session that includes sprinting, quick change of direction, and passing drills; Finlay has swapped the netball for a laptop, and the wide-open training space, for a cleared-out garage. All in an effort to stay focused on continuing to develop herself as an athlete.

“The Academy has helped me during lockdown, by organising online ‘Zoom sports education meetings’ for nutrition, and a mental health ‘check in with the chap(lain)’ which have been really beneficial.” said Finlay. Who mentioned that a key highlight has been an online cooking workshop, that the Academy hosted recently for its athletes.

Sydney West Sports Medicine and Parramatta Eels Dietitian, Kelsey Hutton led the Academy athletes through an online, yet interactive cooking session, where athletes prepared two breakfast and lunch options, whilst learning about the nutrition requirements and options to help boost their athletic performance.

“It was great to get some new ideas and learn more about the importance of nutrition as an athlete,” she said. Adding that, she learnt how to make some

amazing breakfast and lunch meals. Her favourite recipe from the workshop was the burrito bowl. “It was so quick and easy to make but so delicious. Mexican is also my favourite cuisine, so it worked out well.”

Finlay, and her fellow netball athletes have also been taking part in an online ‘Netfit’ Academy Challenge, conducted by Netball NSW, with each Regional Academy program participating in a three-week online training program.

“On top of this our squad has also been doing weekly on-line meetings in small groups where we do strength and conditioning, well-being talks, and our coaches have been giving us challenges to keep us all connected during lockdown.”

Finlay, like most teenage athletes, is looking forward to the opportunity to get back into training and will be nominating for the next Academy Netball program, once the current local lockdown period ends.

“The Academy has provided me with much more knowledge on not just the skills of playing netball, but the behind the scenes work like recovery and leadership. I am really looking forward to getting back to netball and catching up with friends when we can all get back into it,” she added.

It has been Finlay’s attitude to maximising every opportunity within the Academy program, that saw her awarded the Academy’s Netball program Coaches Award for 2021, with the award presented during an online presentation, in late August.

Family has been a great help to Finlay, not only throughout her junior representative career, but also in helping to keep her sane during the pause.

“Mum and I have started a puzzle and have been playing board games, and I have been able to go running and bike riding around our local netball courts to help pass the time, she said.

Finlay, who encouraged fellow athletes no matter what their sport, to take the time and do some form of exercise. Work on those skills that you struggle with in your sport, but also don’t be too hard on yourself. And stating that we are all going through a tough time and are doing the best we can.

With recent announcements by the NSW Government and its ‘recovery roadmap’, the Academy is hopeful that nominations for all of its 2022 sport programs, will be able to be released in early October, with trials anticipated to take place in late November this year.

Men to Join Academy's Netball Development Pathway

BY SWSAS Recently, Netball Australia announced that it is campaigning to see the inclusion of Netball into the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. And off the back of such a successful Tokyo Olympics, where a record 54% of Australia's competing athletes were female, why wouldn't you want to see a global sport like Netball take centre stage?

After all, Netball is the biggest team sport for women and girls within Australia, played by over 1.2 million loud, patriotic Aussie's just waiting to cheer for their team. And this number is set to grow with Sydney hosting Netball's World Cup in 2027.

However, there appears to be one road block standing in the way of inclusion into the Olympic Games, and that is the IOC position that sports inclusion must be played in a great number of countries, in both female and male genders. Ask anybody what Men's Netball looks like, and the most common response is "isn't that Basketball?" Whilst our basketball Boomers recorded Australia's first medal in Olympic competition, NSW Men's Netball Association's president Clare McCabe will provide you with a completely different answer.

"Whilst both men's netball and basketball are played on a court by two teams, where the goal is to get the ball in the basket; that is where the similarities end." Said McCabe, who added that "Netball provides an at times more skilful, and fast-paced game, where being able to shoot the ball is not a requirement to play.

With the current lockdown creating some doubt as to the exact start of face-to-face training, the Academy will commence working with its incoming athletes, online. Including the use of an app-based home strength and conditioning program, in a bid to keep its athletes in peak condition ahead of a return to training.

Athletes will record their physical activity on a specifically designed app, which will assist coaching staff to monitor the training loads and provide individual ongoing quality feedback to each athlete.

Further opportunities for online education sessions and group program discussion meetings, will also be incorporated to master the ongoing lockdown period.

Coach Hine expressed, that Triathlon being somewhat of an individual training sport, Academy athletes can still get out and ride or run at the moment. And whilst they cannot meet face to face as a group, Academy athletes have no excuses for not being in peak condition and ready to go when that opportunity arises. But at the same time, they know that being an Academy athlete is being ready for anything.

Hine is excited by the prospect of working with the eight athletes announced into the 2021-2022 SWSAS Triathlon Program. "This year will again have its own challenges, however, I am looking forward to continuing to foster an environment that is focused on building skills and confidence to execute those skills in the highest state competitions." said Hine. "There is a good mix of athletes within the squad, which also allows them to develop in areas outside of just swim, bike and run. Areas such as leadership, teaching and resilience are all part of being in the Academy triathlon program, along with just having fun."

Ingredients 1 microwave brown rice cup 1 tin of mexican bean mix 1 tbsp of mexican spice mix 1 cup of baby spinach 1/2 avocado 1/2 punnet of cherry tomatoes 1 tbsp of greek yoghurt 1 tbsp of grated tasty cheese Fresh coriander (optional)

Method 1. First, prep the ingredients: 2. Drain and rinse the mexican bean mix in a colander 3. Halve the cherry tomatoes 4. Slice the avocado or mash it in a bowl (guacamole) 5. Rinse the spinach and coriander leaves 6. Warm a non-stick fry pan over a medium-high heat with a splash of olive oil 7. Add the beans to the fry pan along with the mexican spice mix, stirring until the beans are warmed through 8. Meanwhile, warm the microwave brown rice as per packet instructions 9. Once the beans are warmed through, remove from the heat and prepare your bowl 10. Start with emptying the brown rice into the bottom of the bowl first. Top with the spinach then bean mix, then top with cherry tomatoes, avocado slices, greek yoghurt, tasty cheese and lastly sprinkle coriander over the top.
