Hello! If this is our first time meeting, thank you for your interest in mermaids and romance. To returning readers, hello again old friends. We deeply appreciate your return. This issue makes me want to rip off my sundress and jump into the sea, or park my bum on a beach towel pronto. It’s like Jenny Han writes in The Summer I Turned Pretty, “For me, it was almost like winter didn’t count. Summer was what mattered. My whole life was measured in summers.” Speaking as a July baby, I really relate to this. Cheers to the lovers of summer, sirens, and the sea. Let’s go embrace our inner mermaids!
Fondly, Tiffanie

Thank you,
“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
Any romance reader can appreciate the process behind their favorite stories. Here to tell us more about her own process and story is Sarah Ainslee. Sarah’s new book That Wasn’t In the Script is available for purchase now from your local bookseller, or online. You might recognize the design style of the gorgeous book cover, since it was designed by Amber Liu (responsible fo our incredible coloring pages, logo, and collectible playing cards).
What does a day in the life of a romance writer look like?
My mornings usually start early! I wake up and go for a run, then immediately rush to get myself presentable and inhale a quick breakfast. And coffee. Always coffee!
I currently work as a nanny. A large portion of my day is spent sporting a messy bun while shuffling small humans to and from school. I spend my downtime between naps and to-do lists answering publishingrelated emails/messages, reading, or if I’m working on a project, adding to my word count. I’ll hang out with the kids till one of their parents gets off work, then head home to start the latter half of my evening.
A large portion of my writing time is nocturnal. Once I’ve eaten some dinner, I’m in front of the computer forcing myself to write instead of going back to edit what I’ve written the night before. I’m very one-track-minded once I get going. I often have to force myself to stop, so I can be asleep by a decent hour.
Weekends are far more flexible. I’ll go to my favorite coffee shops to work for
a while. I usually need silence to sit and focus, but if I’m struggling with a story beat, I’ll turn to my WIP playlist and chill with music till my brain feels less fuzzy and get back to the draft.
When did you first know that you wanted to write romance?
I’ve been a hopeless romantic since I was young. When I was in middle school and devouring YA books, they always needed a romantic subplot to hold my attention. My earliest writing as a teen was fanfiction (AKA: my way of fixing the ships TV show writers didn’t get right). All of this greatly contributed to me eventually working romance into what I write.
What is your favorite kind of romance to write and why?
I like to say my brand of romance could be labeled, “chaotic, yet wholesome.” My favorite love stories are the ones that feel like they could actually happen, but in a setting that you or I wouldn’t typically find ourselves in.
Where do you find inspiration?
Most people think I’m an introvert, when in reality, I’m a really observant people watcher/listener. I draw inspiration from people I see or overhear in public.
What does your writing process look like?
I am the definition of a panster. It’s both a blessing and a curse. Recently, I’ve become better at writing skeleton drafts. I’ll outline the basic story elements—the who, why, where, and how—and highlight major plot points I need to write towards. It allows me to create off the cuff while forcing me to reach the end with a complete story.
What is the most challenging part of writing romance and why?
Wanting to write love stories people can suspend their disbelief for, and simultaneously, totally believe in. Especially in YA. Finding the balance between allowing teen characters to feel big feelings and humanizing them can be a challenge. I never want the romantic elements to define a character who is trying to figure themself out, but I do want those elements to enhance the journey of who they become.
Advice to aspiring romance writers?
Great romance stems from great characters. Don’t lose sight of what makes your MCs special once the kissing starts.
Advice to your younger self?
Remember that one time in second grade when your teacher told you that your three-page creative writing assignment
about you being a weirdo horse girl was too outlandish and gave it a 68/100? Don’t take it to heart. Keep writing outlandish stories. The world needs them.
What is your favorite romance to read/watch and why?
I’m a sucker for 90s and early 2000s romcoms. It was such an unspoiled moment in pop culture where romance was cheesy without apologizing for it. I also love old movies from the 40s and 50s. Not all of them have aged well, but who can resist Judy Garland singing about her crush on the boy next door?
Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not?
As I’ve gotten older, my feelings have become philosophical on this subject. Attraction at first sight? Absolutely. Good vibes at first sight? Heck yes. Love, however, requires the awkwardness of getting to know someone on a deeper level. When you have people willing to take those steps, I think it’s easy to fall fast in a way that feels safe and familiar. (That said, instalove is my favorite book trope. So maybe I’m not 100% self-aware yet!)
Do you have any meetcute stories? (IRL ones, preferably) Sadly, most of my personal meetcutes consist of unrequited crushes on handsome strangers in airports and coffee shops. My time is coming! Until then, my favorite
meetcute story to this day is of a guy I used to know who met his wife while working as a cast member at Disneyland—he was Prince Charming, she was Cinderella.
Have you read or watched anything with mermaids lately?
I was recently asked to blurb JD Steiner’s novel Wreckleaf ! It’s a dark, dystopian YA novel about hybrid mermaid humans on a resort island as they uncover secrets about their past. The romantic subplot between the MC and her bad boy love interest didn’t hurt either! It’s out now through my publisher, Bow’s Bookshelf!
What is your new novel about?
That Wasn’t in the Script is a dual-POV YA retelling of the 1952 film, Roman
Holiday. In the movie, Audrey Hepburn plays a runaway European princess who spends one whimsical day in Rome with, unknowingly, an American journalist who plans to exploit her ventures— till he falls for her.
TWITS follows a modern-day formula. Rowan Adler is a teen actor who runs away from his handlers one night while in New York. He’s found unconscious by recent Brooklyn transplant, Josie Bradford. Once she learns of his heartthrob status, she quickly schemes up a plan to sell his story online for college money. When the two wind up spending the day together and developing feelings, they’re both faced with the question of what matters more: the future they thought they wanted, or the unscripted future ahead of them.
Delicate textured cloth of terry. Shields my little derrière, From grains of sand...in you know where.
Magic carpet warm with sun. Holds the items I find fun. Beach read—I’m almost done.
Items scattered all about: Floppy hat, sunglasses out. Seashells dot the perfect route.
I’ll defend you from the bird poo. Even though they say: “it’s good luck for you.” I’ll forever clean your lilac hue.
Off I go to dilly dally by and bye!

Boy do I have some cute ones for you!
Ladurée! If you’re based in New York, take your date to coffee and macarons in Soho. Their downtown location has a cute little outdoor section that’ll make you think you’re in the French countryside, and during the right time of year, you can even enjoy being amongst cherry blossom beauty!
Every year I plan on taking the Roosevelt Island tram to the island and walking around to take pictures amongst the cherry blossoms. Last year I actually made it, and it was so worth it! You can catch the tram from midtown Manhattan and get the most beautiful view of the river and the thrill of the ride. Once you land you realize Roosevelt Island is the closest whiff of the slow comfort of suburbia you can
get in the city. There’s kids, families, parks, water, and a view of the city. Walk around, do a photoshoot with the cherry blossoms, and then enjoy the ride back.
If you like beer and day drinking (who doesn’t?) try going to Red Hook! It’s a little out of the way from the rest of the city, but you can enjoy a beautiful view of the water while checking out all the breweries and wineries in the area like Sixpoint Brewing or Red Hook Winery! And IKEA is right there so tipsy IKEA visit anyone?
✂ Take them to Brighton Beach for a sunny summer day! You can lay in the sand together, share your favorite playlists, get a little wet, and nap together. Coney Island is also right there, so you can head over when the sun starts to set and get some snacks and hold hands on some scary rides.
If I want to change something about my partner, what’s a good
to accommodate your love languages, not expecting them to change theirs.
Lovingly! I will start with the caveat that you can ask them to change things they do, but you can’t ask them to change who they are. For example, another reader wrote in to ask what they should do if their boyfriend forgot to get them flowers for
When do you know if you should marry the person you’re with?
Honestly, I don’t think anyone can tell you that! All I’ll say is that you should take all the time you need, and it’ll probably always feel like a leap of faith because that’s what it is!
love you and want to make you happy, just like you do them, but they can’t read your mind and probably didn’t know you are upset by their actions. It might lead to a disagreement! But if you both come in expecting the best intentions of each other, I’m sure you’ll find middle ground. Just keep in mind that they probably aren’t doing whatever they are doing to hurt you and have the best of intentions, and give them that grace in your request. But again, you fell in love with them for who they are and there’s a reason for that. Compromising and communicating with your partner is about asking them
How do you end a long-term friendship when it no longer makes you happy?
That is a good and very relevant question! Friend breakups are hard af. Not everyone is meant to be in your life forever. Sometimes we’re each too busy in our own worlds. Sometimes we don’t continue to have things in common after switching jobs or moving or graduating. That is ok!
Sometimes the breakup may mean that you continue to see each other, but less. That doesn’t mean you have to never speak again, but maybe it is an evolution of the friendship. Maybe you aren’t as involved
Compromising and communicating with your partner is about asking them to accommodate your love languages, not expecting them to change theirs.
in every aspect of each other’s lives, and sometimes it means taking on a different role in each other’s lives. Like going from being the go-to daily vent sesh to seeing each other at group events with mutual friends. All of those are valid evolutions of friendships, and might feel better than a full break. Also, sometimes you do just need a full break. Friends can be as toxic as romantic relationships!
Some questions to ask yourself:
1. Have you voiced your concerns in a kind, but frank manner?
2. Has your friend demonstrated remorse and a desire to change or at least meet in the middle?
3. How long have you felt this way and how many times have you addressed it?
4. Even if they change, will they add joy to your life?
Depending on how you answer these questions, think about whether you never want to speak to someone again, or whether you just want to pull back. If you pull the majority of the weight in the relationship, stop doing that. See if
they reach out. If they never do, then you have your solution. If they do, voice your concerns and what you want to see evolve in your friendship, and what you intend to happen if y’all don’t get to that place.
Either way, start by being very clear in what YOU want, and then articulate and take action from there. And remember, no matter what, you will miss a person that has played a central role in your life. That doesn’t mean you’re making a mistake! Don’t fall into a cycle that’ll cause you more pain, and lean on the friends and family that do bring you joy. Not all habits are good.
I’m being ghosted. Should I try and figure out why or let it be?
One double text. That’s it. Everyone loses track of texts sometimes and it’s totally fair and even encouraged to give them one extra chance. It makes it clear that you want to see them again and you’re not a flake. Otherwise if they still don’t respond, do you really want to be with someone who doesn’t respect your time enough to respond? Or that you have to convince to be with you? That’s not a strong foundation for love.

Another version of a real-life mermaid is a marine biologist, so obviously we had to speak with one. Grace Teller is here to tell us more about all things marine biology.
What is your favorite rom-com?
50 First Dates, probably because he works at an aquarium, uses a sealion to flirt, and [spoiler alert] they end up on a sailboat traveling the ocean in the end.
What does a day as a marine biologist look like?
It really depends on the field of marine biology you find yourself in. In the world of environmental consulting, every day is different. With the wide variety of work I manage, I could be in the field (on land, a vessel, or underwater), writing reports, performing data analysis, or helping with permitting for future work. There is no typical day. At this point in my career I do spend a large amount of my time training staff to complete field work objectives, reviewing their data, and reporting deliverables.
What is one fun fact about the ocean that we might not know?
Barnacles are badass. 1. They eat with their feet, 2. They have the longest penis to body size ratio of any organism in the animal kingdom (up to 8x the size of their body). This is because barnacles are sessile (non-mobile) organisms and need to be able to reach different mates to inseminate and reproduce. This allows for increased genetic diversity resulting in increased survivorship.
What is your favorite sea creature?
There are so many awesome ones to choose from. I would say my spirit animal is the California harbor seal. Inquisitive, cute, and always observing the world around them, yet they’re not afraid to bite when necessary. I also have an affinity for the
upside down jellyfish. Mostly because at first I thought it was upside down because it was trying to get to deeper water, but actually they have a symbiotic relationship with algae in their tentacles. They stay upside down so the algae can photosynthesise and keep the jellyfish alive.
What is the coolest dive you have ever done?
Again, hard to choose from. So many dives are cool for their own reasons. One that sticks out was diving in the Red Sea. I did a daytime dive which was beautiful for all the reasons we love tropical reefs. I went to the same reef later that day for a night dive and it was totally transformed. It was the same reef, but it seemed like worlds apart with all of the animals that were visible at night that were absent during the day.
Advice to aspiring marine biologists?
Don’t stop getting experience. It was really hard to get my foot in the door. I just kept trying to find opportunities to learn more skills that could be valuable when applying to jobs including volunteering, higher level education, and learning to identify animals. Also, don’t wait for an opportunity to come to you (they probably won’t). The majority of my experience prior to getting a job was through cold calling people and places that were doing cool work.
What are some fun ways to celebrate water this summer?
Get in it! Go explore! You don’t need any special equipment to tidepool at your local beaches. And for the more adventurous try snorkeling or SCUBA diving.

What do you call a practical mermaid? A scuba diver. Emma Macdonald, volunteer scuba diver extraordinaire at one of the world’s best aquariums (the National Aquarium), is here to tell us more.
What is your favorite rom-com?
Does The Princess Bride count? If not, 10 Things I Hate About You.
What is your favorite part of scuba diving?
Apart from everything you get to see in open water, the act of diving is very relaxing for me. I am thinking about my breathing, and the primary thing you hear is your own bubbles. In addition, it’s the closest I can get to being weightless. When I dream of flying, the feeling is more like neutral buoyancy.
How long did it take to learn how to scuba dive?
Basic dive certifications typically include classroom learning about the essential gear, dive physics, communication, safety protocols, etc. Classroom learning takes a couple of hours, then there is pool/shallow water skills practice, and finally open water dives. I am certified through PADI, but there are a couple organizations.
If you want to just try diving, dive shops sometimes offer “Discover SCUBA,” where you can dive immediately without a certification with supervision from experienced instructors.
What are some of your favorite scuba diving memories?
I once spent an entire dive just floating next to a cuttlefish on the Great Barrier Reef. They can turn all different sorts of colors and patterns, and it’s mesmerizing to watch. Cancun cenotes. Just beautiful. When the fresh water met the salt water, it looked like the water was boiling in front of your mask.
Is there any scuba dive lingo to learn?
Lots, but a lot are just technical or safety concerns... I can’t think of super fun ones.
One thing you wish you knew before learning to dive?
• How much it would take over my life
• One of my favorite sayings: “There are two types of people: those who pee in their wetsuits and those who lie about it.”
• Romanticize the ocean
Have your ever seen scuba diving in a rom-com?
No, but I would love to!!
What does a day in the life of an aquarium diver look like?
Schedule: Arrive, set up gear, briefing, prepare food, feeding dive, shower, lunch, briefing, cleaning dive (sometimes the afternoon includes a communication dive in a different tank where the diver does a presentation underwater for the crowd with a special mask), shower/clean up.
What is your favorite exhibit in the aquarium?
The one with the most sharks!
What is your favorite sea creature?
Cephalopods, sharks, puffer/burrfish, nudibranchs, anemone, seahorses...etc.

Astrology fit for a mermaid queen.
The astrology of 2023 is definitely bringing up all the elements of our love life. It’s a time for assertively cultivating new relationships, most importantly with yourself.
Who are you really, underneath it all?
What do you want to create with your magic?
When you’re fully aware of this, how do you show up differently in your relationships?
Relationships will be a top focus this summer with the Lunar Nodes shifting from Taurus/Scorpio (axis of resources) to Aries/Libra (axis of relationships). The Lunar nodes represent our destiny path, and invite us to expand our comfort zones around what is possible for us to embody, and how much more we can open ourselves to Life!
The North Node in Aries (ruled by Mars) will invite deeper passion, fire, connection to our inner spark, and our inner light. We’ll collectively feel a need to express ourselves more authentically, which can add some spice to your love life.
This new self-expression might not always be understood by others, but it will help us create ourselves anew after all that’s changed in our world over the past 3 years.
This is an important year for identity, and uncovering all the relationship dynamics that we’ve allowed to keep us from our true selves.
Venus and Mars are our core evolutionary guides this year as the planetary rulers of the lunar nodes, (aka their input is central to our current Destiny path). Venus represents the emerging Divine Feminine, and Mars the emerging Divine Masculine.
How do you relate to your own anima/animus?
Venus and Mars will be hanging out in Leo (the sign of authentically being seen and sharing our creative gifts) for most of June and July. These will be fiery months where the passions can run high, and you can channel your energy with strength and inner conviction.
This is great for the dynamics between masculine and feminine playing with each other, dancing between the polarities of yin and yang energy, and turning up your magnetism. This goes for creative passion and play as well. What are you feeling inspired to create?
The Leo Venus Cycle that begins August 13th of this year through March of 2025 will help you open up your heart again, feel safe to play, take up space, and express yourself boldly. In love, this is a beautiful
time for being vulnerable, being seen, and for taking chances. This is a time for radical self-love, in a new and deeper way than you’ve ever felt before.
The Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra + Capricorn) have the opportunity to completely create a new identity if that’s needed, and get to explore new ways of being in a relationship.
The Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio + Aquarius) are being asked to expand and evolve, to come into higher wisdom and self-appreciation, in order to authentically contribute to the group, and what we’re collectively co-creating.
The Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius + Pisces) are being asked to practice discernment and create boundaries to bolster their play.
If you have strong Fire in your chart (planets in Aries, Leo, Sagittarius):
You’re getting a strong healing around your identity with Chiron long-term in Aries. The North Node moving into Aries this summer will bring the spotlight on healing your self-trust and cultivating a new identity. You’re being invited to trust your instincts and become a clear channel for your own inspiration and creative expression.
With Venus moving into her Leo cycle, this will be a potent year for reconnecting
with what really makes you feel alive! What keeps you motivated and interested in what you’re doing? This is a time for learning to validate yourself around your own intuition and creative projects. Beam your heart energy and send your love out! The world needs you, and your relationships will thrive with this open-hearted and playful vulnerability.
If you have strong Earth in your chart (planets in Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn):
You are getting the Jupiterian spotlight with Jupiter in Taurus for the coming year, expanding our awareness of our values, self-worth, pleasure-ability and creating our own epicurean lifestyle. Maybe this is the year you get to make your Pinterest board a reality! How much more can you allow yourself to receive? And how can you use resources in alignment with your values? What gets to be healed around your money story?
The earth signs are in continued focus with the North Node in Taurus until July 17th, the Venus Cycle being ruled by Capricorn (before shifting to the Leo cycle August 13th), and Jupiter in Taurus May 15th through May of 2024!
We also have Mercury stationing Retrograde in all 3 earth signs this year inviting reflection on how we use our tools, skills, and inner resources. Plus Uranus is long-term in Taurus shaking up our value systems and inviting us to align more
deeply to who we really are. How can you let yourself feel even better in your body?
If you have strong Air in your chart (planets in Gemini, Libra, Aquarius):
Pluto dipping into Aquarius (the end of March through June) is showing us the possibilities of collective social transformation. This is an empowering transit, helping us to see our options with clarity, and to connect with our communities with intention. There might be a tone of seriousness for the air signs, but from a place of honoring your most aligned visions for your future. What are you focusing your attention on? What would your fairytale life look and feel like?
The collective social systems are changing to be more inclusive of the whole of humanity, and you Air sign ambassadors will be a major part of the initiations into a new era. You’re here to be thoughtleaders, and remember that leadership is relationship. All three air signs are invited to start the conversation and help your communities find their creative voice. It starts with you speaking and confidently circulating your amazing ideas!
If you have strong Water in your chart (planets in Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces):
Water signs hold the magic of the rivers, lakes, springs, wells, oceans, and the waters of our bodies - and for that, you are meant to be always in flow. Pay attention to anywhere you’re stagnating, especially in your creative process, as you’re being called forward to build with the strength of water.
Saturn in Pisces for the next 3 years will call forward the water wisdom keepers, as they’ll be needed to remind everyone of the importance of our emotional intelligence and energetic hygiene, and that the beauty of all we get to experience emotionally is what makes life worth living.
With the South Node in Scorpio for the past year and a half you’ve been asked to purify your emotional reservoirs, so that you can make space for the new. There is a sense of closure to old relationship dynamics and versions of self, and you are going through a massive death and rebirth process. How can you trust yourself more, let go, and flow?
The ultimate question for everyone: how much more can you let life in, and really live?

While the dating application Hinge is super nice, sometimes people want the old school experience of going through a set-up by a physical person. Gabriella Aratow of Keeper Introduction Service is here to tell us all about the mysteries of professional matchmaking.
What is your favorite rom-com?
Romancing the Stone. It was my first and I watched it over and over as a kid. There might be higher quality rom-coms, but this is the O.R.C. (original rom-com) for me and will always hold that place in my heart.
When did you first know that you wanted to be a matchmaker?
I’ve always been a connector, that kid on the school yard expanding everyone’s groups of friends, but it wasn’t until many years into my working life that I even realized that my favorite type of connecting – romantic – could be an actual profession, and a skill with true value from which I could earn a living. So, it wasn’t so much “wanting” it as just letting it happen.
What does a typical day as a matchmaker look like?
I’m calling my clients to see how their dates the night before were, or I’m calling candidates I think could be good for my clients to see if they might like to meet my client. I’m looking in my database. I’m calling colleagues in the industry to inquire about good candidates in their databases. I’m meeting with potential clients to see if matchmaking is a fit for them. I’m getting
my name out, so people know I offer this service. I also make a lot of dinner reservations. A side perk of this job is OpenTable points. I have A LOT of those.
How can you tell if a couple is a good match on paper?
Similar interests, life goals, and political viewpoints can be a strong start. Athough opposites certainly sometimes do attract, in my business like-ness is superior. I just set up a date where both people grew up abroad, speak multiple languages, love to ski, want to adopt a child, adore dogs and horses, and care about climate change. Even if they don’t fall in love, that’s a solid on-paper match. That’s my job.
How can you tell if a couple is a good match in real life?
They make one another happier and are proudly invested in the other’s physical and psychological well-being.
Everyone talks about “red flags” a lot and what to avoid, what are some “green flags” or positives to look out for in finding your match?
They support your dreams; they take personal responsibility if and when they err; they treat your wants and needs with the same level of importance as their own; their actions coordinate with their words; you get clarity over confusion from them; you feel centered and calm around them, even if you are doing exciting things.
What is your favorite thing about love and relationships?
They make the world more fun. It’s a big world with a lot of opportunity to play in it.
Do you have any first date advice?
Don’t get too invested in any one person upfront. You don’t know them yet. And if they didn’t respond to your authentic self, then they weren’t your match.
What is your favorite thing about love and relationships?
When two people decide to forego any other possible options from the billions of people on the planet to be only with each other, it’s a pretty big deal. And when they choose this day after day, month after month, year after year, it’s no less than a miracle to me.
What kind of qualities do people look for when they are searching for a match?
Most people are far overly concerned about physical traits when really what will make a match last and grow has much more to do with personalities that click well.
What is the best way to bounce back from a bad date?
Get yourself on a good one! There’s so much variety out there. If someone made you feel badly about who you are, which happens all the time in dating, often because of people’s own childhood damage, then there’s also going to be someone else who will make you feel great about who you are. Always uphold other people’s esteem, and value yourself enough to make sure other people always uphold yours.

Have you ever wondered what details go on behind-the-scenes of a proposal?
We didn’t even know this job existed, proposal planning, until we came across @ dreamteamproposals. Lexi Tobin is here to tell us more about what it is like to plan proposals. Do you have a friend who is over-the-top, larger than life with very high expectations? Perhaps Lexi can help their partner plan a proposal of their dreams.

What is your favorite rom-com?
The Parent Trap!
When did you first start planning proposals?
The first proposal I ever planned was for my older sister in 2019. Since then, I became obsessed with the entire process: getting to know the groom, having a vision and seeing it all come to life, and then of course being able to witness the most special moment in couples’ lives. My first proposal gained an incredible amount of traction on social media, with over 80M+ views, which led to my proposal planning side hustle.
Where do you find proposal inspiration?
I love LOVE! I get inspired when I plan proposals for people with big visions to make this the most special moment of their spouse’s life.
I choreographed a proposal in NYC with 50+ friends involved. When the girlfriend walked into what she thought was just a dinner with some girl friends, it ended up being 50 friends holding red roses up in a huddle for her to walk underneath. It was a long pathway until she walked into a private room with a massive “MARRY
ME” sign, several bouquets of flowers, rose petals, a violinist, and sparklers lighting up the room overlooking NYC. There was a photographer and a videographer recording the whole thing like it was a movie. He got down on one knee in front of her, their friends, and family. It was absolutely breathtaking. We then planned an engagement party following with dinner. Drinks were served and people made speeches on the mic, which turned into a video capturing the night.
of time, packing massive suitcases and bringing it to set up the day of, being the one to contact friends/family so the men don’t have to risk the surprise being soiled,
and being there on-site to bring it all to life. I’d say one of the hardest parts for someone who thinks they can plan their own proposal without an expert is being able to do it without their significant other knowing it’s all happening. And I’m here to take all of that off people’s plates.
How do you keep the surprise from being ruined during a proposal?
I’m a stranger to the person being proposed to, so this is exactly why I like to get involved from step 1. I am the one communicating with friends, family, vendors, and the groomto-be. The groom and I coordinate best times to reach out, so there is never any risk. We always come up with a game plan of how the surprise will happen from the start: whether it be work happy hour, dinner with friends, etc.
Do you think your occupation inspired your fiancé when he proposed?
YES!!! My fiancé always knew that I had high standards since I was a proposal planner, but he blew me away. He’s learned a lot from watching me plan several proposals, so he knew what to do. The hard part was keeping it a secret from me.
How far in advance should a person start planning their proposal?
I think 2-3 months in advance is the perfect timeline for a traditional proposal. If you are looking to do something extremely extravagant or in a different state, then 6 months is ideal.
Advice to aspiring proposal planners?
HAVE FUN! I’ve learned so much every time I plan a new proposal and work with a new person. Everyone’s budgets and visions are different, but that’s what makes it so special. The most important part of the entire day is the couple in the room, and all of the planning just gives it that extra special feel.

The Holiday
Miranda (1948) On his vacation, a doctor is rescued by a mermaid. She plans on keeping him as her prisoner, but negotiates a deal for him to show her London instead. Humor and romance ensues.
Peter Pan (1953) Peter introduces Wendy to mermaids for less than two minutes. It does not paint the mermaids in the best light (they splash Wendy and try to drown her). Perhaps the new Peter Pan and Wendy Live Action remake will portray mermaids in a better light.
Splash (1984) A mermaid saves a boy from downing, and many years later they reconnect. Romance follows, but is put on hold due to a devious scientist.
The Little Mermaid (1989) Any girl with an overbearing or controlling father can relate to this one. All Ariel wants to do is explore and witness life on land, but an evil deal with an evil sea witch causes some issues for her. We won’t spoil the ending.
Mermaids (1990)
The title of this film is a bit silly, since Cher only dresses up as a mermaid for a small part of it. There aren’t many films about a Jewish daughter wanting to become a nun, so maybe the daughter is metaphorically a “mermaid.”
Sabrina Down Under (1999) Sabrina the Teenage Witch visits Australia and meets a colony of mermaids. She tries to protect them by helping to stop the illness-enducing pollution. Sabrina gives a merman (Barnaby) legs temporarily. We never thought there’d be a witchy mermaid movie, but there’s something out there for everyone.
The Thirteenth Year (1999) A Disney Channel Original Movie about a boy who learns his mother is a mermaid (and consequently, so is he).
Aquamarine (2006) After a massive storm washes up a mermaid (named Aquamarine), two teenage girls are determined to help her find love with their local lifeguard Raymond in exchange for a wish.
H20: Just Add Water (2006-2010)
An Australian TV series about three girls who become mermaids.
The Mermaid (2016) A mermaid assassin is sent to kill a man who threatens the entire mermaid ecosystem. A hilarious and refreshing storyline that departs from the trope of defenseless mermaids to smart, powerful ones.
Lu Over the Wall (2017)
An adorable animated film about a band who accidentally attracts a mermaid (Lu) with their music. It is incredibly heartfelt and underrated.
The Little Mermaid (May 26, 2023) A new liveaction remake of the classic, this time with the iconic Halle Bailey as Ariel. We cannot wait to watch it.
We spoke with author Philip Jepsen of Mermaids of Earth, who traveled around the world to find mermaid statues.

I was born in Denmark. We have the Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen Harbor and it’s a subject everyone knows about over there. I happened to be helping my mom drive across the U.S. moving house, and we saw a sign that said: “stop and see The Little Mermaid” in Iowa. I was curious, so we stopped and looked at it. It was a really bad copy. Then I started doing some research on where else they have copies of The Little Mermaid. I found all these other mermaids. There were no books and no websites about it, so it became a hobby.
The one in Henley (pictured left) was made by Amaryllis Bataille. It’s a mermaid with legs, and she carries her skin over her shoulders. The idea is that once the important message has been sent across, she will hop back into the ocean. Bataille partnered with a German couple who agreed to fund making the mermaids. The whole idea with that project was to get mermaids into places that would benefit a local charity. They paid for the cost of making the mermaid and told the cities that wanted them, get these paid for and a third of that will go to a local charity.
Amaryllis has done a number of mermaid statues going back twenty and thirty years. The intent of that has always been to raise awareness of water pollution and sustainability of the oceans.
I like the fact that it has happened in so many different places with no connection to each other. You have the Greek folklore, that influenced a lot, which started out as bird ladies rather than fish ladies. Somehow it migrated to the mermaid that we are familiar with now. The Faroe islands have a completely different mythology of mermaids and seal wives. If you go to Austria, it’s different yet again. Somehow, lots of different civilizations have this common mythology of mermaids. I think that’s really neat.
I don’t know. There’s a lot of stuff. Did they really exist? Did they come from somewhere? There are news articles and TV programs about it. In general, there’s a misconception that goes back to manatees and the seafarers who saw manatees and decided they were mermaids.
What is a fun fact about mermaids?
The first original mermaid started in Syria. It was a deity called Atargatis. This mythology of her becoming a mermaidgoddess relates to a Syrian custom of not eating fish. Africa has a deity called Mami Wata, and she is connected to healing/ blamed for health issues.
How can people join the mermaid/art scene?
There are a lot of Facebook groups. Join one of them or multiple.
Lucky girl syndrome and the power of positive thinking has been trending on TikTok. We prefer to discuss luckiness in the form of small symbols that you can find in your day to day outside (like a feather) or on your phone clock (angel numbers). The following is a list of merely a few examples (we would be here for years if we attempted to cover every symbol known to humans or mermaids).
Why are lady bugs lucky? Farmers believed they were lucky because they ate other insects that caused issues with their crops.
You may have a lucky number that you notice in your life every now and again.
Angel numbers are believed to be lucky due to their sequences and the connection between the number patterns and the spiritual universe. It is believed that your angel or spirit guide is watching over you when they send an 11:11. There is probably much deeper meaning to that.
In addition to being a sign for LGBTQIA pride and identity, the rainbow is considered lucky and a symbol for hope. In Greek mythology, Iris is the goddess of the rainbow, and she connects people to the Gods. Perhaps then the meteorological phenomenon also feels like a spiritual sign from God/a higher power.
Ancient metals were believed to be gifts from the gods. Therefore, the lucky penny was born as a sign of protection from the Gods.
A countering sign of good luck, the evil eye prevents bad luck for many cultures (Jewish, Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, Indigenous, and other societies).
The hamsa also prevents bad luck for various cultures. It is a hand that brings you love, light, luck, and protection, while shielding you from hatred, jealousy, insecurities, illness, and evil.
Bird feathers are good luck in Native American culture, since birds are symbols of freedom from fear and constraints.
Bird poop is considered good luck because of how rare it is, and because the droppings are considered to be a blessing (there is more to that, but we don’t want to waste your time talking about literal poop).
Four leaf clovers are symbols of faith, hope, love, and luck according to the bible.
The collarbone of a chicken was believed by ancient Romans to be sacred. They left it out to dry in the sun for people to make wishes on it. The lucky wishbone was created.
Lastly, the tree of life is considered good luck, a symbol of divine wisdom, harmony, rebirth, immortality, personal development, and more in ancient African tradition, Christianity, Egyptian, Buddhism, Judaism, Turkish, and Celtic cultures.

A Theater for Dreamers by Polly Samson. If you like the musical Mamma Mia, you might like this book. It should be known that the author, Polly Samson, is a lyricist. You can tell when you read her flowery, gorgeous language suitable for songs.
Speaking of songs, did you know that Lana Del Ray wrote a book? We recommend her photofilled poetry Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass. Whimsically written in typewriter-esque formatting, with scribbles of Lana’s notes in the margins, it is poetry fit for a mystical mermaid. It simultaneously makes you want to attend and scoff at a party.
Golden Ax by Rio Cortez. Our favorite poem from this collection is “Black Lead in a Nancy Meyers Film’’, but the entire collection is full of charming, complex poetry of womanhood, family, and afropioneerism.
Happy Place by Emily Henry. Nothing like a “fake relationship on a vacation” plotline to spice up your own holiday. This seems to be Emily Henry’s favorite kind of plot (based on her previous books). Set in Maine, the secondchance love story sounds like 400 pages of fun. Take the book to your “happy place”, and enjoy.
Mad & Bad Real Heroines of the Regency by Bea Koch. Historical romance girlies, this one’s for you. Finally, a feminist perspective on the Regency period. We love a fun book cover design, scribbled with spray-paint. (If you read issue 01, you know we are major scribble enthusiasts). Read on for regency realness, and as Taylor Swift says: Fuck the patriarchy.
Seven Days in June by Tia Williams. We recommend reading this masterpiece before it is adapted into a television series by Kinetic Content. Erotica author and Brooklynite Eva Mercy reunites unexpectedly with author and former lover Shane Hall. Talk about a literary sphere power couple. Williams’s words are lovely, comedic, and lushly sensual.
The Secret Lives of Stones
Lapidarium by Hettie Judah. The cover alone is stunning (designed by Holly Ovenden). Sixty stories for sixty stones means you can simply open the book at any point you want and pick a story (there is no order/ rhyme and reason). Okay, so maybe there is an order... but you don’t have to follow it. We propose this book for crystal, rock, mineral, and geology enthusiasts. And mermaids.

If you believe in Australian cinema folklore, Ava Gardner once said that Australia is “the perfect place to make a film about the end of the world.” Whether she said it or not (she didn’t) and whether it’s true or not (ask Mad Max’s George Miller), Australia certainly has its fair share of dramatic backdrops for big cinema moments.
While our iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge or the outback of central Australia are included in international films every now and then, it’s a bit more challenging for the average cinema lover to wander the streets of our major cities and have a swoon worthy time recalling romantic moments from the big screen. But it’s not impossible. For the romantics among us, or maybe even those after a cute date idea for the cinephile in their life, there’s probably a location to visit closer than you think.
A lot of Australian film and television could be categorized as “a total bummer, but in a beautiful place.” There’s something about our landscape and weather that feels so dramatic you have no choice but to feel a little bit apocalyptic. While On The Beach falls squarely into the apocalypse genre, those of us feeling less than optimistic about the state of our world might relate to Ava Gardner’s Moira, standing on the cliffs overlooking the beach as her troubled lover heads off to face his death with a bunch of troops in a submarine. The stunning Mt Eliza is where you’ll find Canadian Bay Beach, the titular beach on which some of the film was shot.
Location: Canadian Bay Beach, Mt Eliza, 1 hour out of Melbourne
F. Scott Fitzgerald’s much-loved classic The Great Gatsby was set in New York and The Hamptons – two locations key to understanding the life and characters of the book. So where did home-grown hero Baz Luhrmann film some of the most iconic scenes in his 2013 adaptation? Sydney, obviously. While Jay Gatsby’s home may look like a stunning mansion purchased to win the affections of the woman of his dreams, its façade was just that: a sham! Just like everyone in the book! That ain’t no house, it’s the International College of Management Sydney (formerly St Patrick’s Seminary) in Manly. That long striking driveway, perfect for dramatic arrivals and departures of lovers, was constructed and captured within Sydney’s Centennial Park – a perfect spot for a romantic picnic I’d say.
Film: The Great Gatsby
Location: Centennial Park, Woollahra/ Paddington, Sydney and International College of Management Sydney (formerly St Patrick’s Seminary) Manly, Sydney.
If Gatsby’s ending has got you bummed, pop on Muriel’s Wedding to experience the joy of a classic Australian experience, and characters perfectly rendered by Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths.
Obsessed with her dream of the perfect wedding and transcending the limits of her dead-end town, Muriel (Collette) and pal Rhonda (Griffiths) take a questionable path to liberation.
Muriel finally gets her (sham) marriage, which we see take place at St Mark’s Church in Darling Point.
Film: Muriel’s Wedding
Location: St Mark’s Church, Darling Point Road, Darling Point, Sydney.
If outback is more your lover’s lane than the streets of Sydney, why not take your sweetie on a tour of Victoria’s MalleeWimmera region, about an hour out of Melbourne, and see the sights of 2015’s The Dressmaker. Kate Winslet nails an Aussie accent in this 50’s period piece about love, revenge, and sticking it to your shitty home town. Filmed in a variety of locations including the You Yangs, Mt Rothwell and Horsham, Winslet plays a successful seamstress who returns from the couturiers of Paris to small-town (fictional) Dungatar to look after her ailing mother – and shake the rumours that she’s the one who killed a kid years earlier. In the process, she falls for local hottie Teddy (Liam Hemsworth). The feeling is mutual, but that’s not to say there’s a happy ending.
Film: The Dressmaker Location: The You Yangs, Mt Rothwell, Horsham (MalleeWimmera region), about an hour out of Melbourne.
Heath Ledger was, and remains, an icon of Australian (and international!) cinema. Beloved world-wide, Aussie’s have a special place in their hearts for Ledger’s incredible Australian film credits. In 1999, at just 20, Ledger starred in Australian cinema classic Two Hands, a gritty but comic action flick that has Heath playing a small-time criminal over his head with the Sydney underworld. In the midst of the chaos –which partly begins with the 10k he leaves on Bondi Beach while he takes a dip in the sea (who can blame him) – there’s a sweet, budding romance between Heath’s Jimmy, and Rose Byrne’s Alex. So charming, so fun, so Sydney. Two Hands’s hot spots are the easily accessible Kings Cross, and the iconic Bondi Beach.
Film: Two Hands
Location: Sydney’s Red Light District –Kings Cross, Sydney & Bondi Beach, Bondi, Sydney.
Rounding us out with a repeat offender is Baz Luhrmann’s debut, Strictly Ballroom. While he might be most famous for his later big-budget extravaganzas, his first feature Strictly Ballroom is considered by many to be his masterpiece. While its stars remain largely unknown outside Australia’s shores, the film truly captures the Australian experience at the time, in the most Luhrmann way possible. A star ballroom dancer, Scott, finds himself without a partner to compete with in his gaudy parents’ ballroom dancing studio. Enter Fran from stage right, a meek and maligned loser figure who dreams of dancing. They get together, unlikely sparks fly, yadda yadda. Some of the best scenes take place on the rooftop of a real estate agent, with Scott and Fran dancing around a clothesline, a glittering Coca-Cola ad behind them. The film reignited an entire country’s passion for the 1978 hit “Love Is In the Air”. Why not find a rooftop overlooking Sydney, and blast the song for your lover while you dance the night away?
Film: Strictly Ballroom
Location: Rooftop of the LJ Hooker Real Estate agent, Cnr. Marrickville and Victoria Road, Marrickville, Sydney.
“Can you please spell ‘Gabbana’?”
The Devil Wears Prada
Read on to find your perfect colour match advice. It is imperative to discover your favorite hues that are flattering on you. It’s giving main character energy.
My favourite colour is an aqua teal. It’s not a colour that I wear. Some people think that a favourite colour is to be worn, but for me it is what I feel attracted to and mesmerized by.
I have different days. On client days, the client tells me briefly why they are seeking colour analysis. Then we have a long, very elaborate session. After that, we debrief and action what was learned from the session.
When it’s not a client day, sometimes I am harmonizing, swatching colours of cosmetics, clothing items, or yarns, fabrics etc. I look a bit like a crazy scientist with colour swatches spread out everywhere.
My favourite part, or what is most surprising to people, is that colour is like music. You can use it any way you like. Let’s say you have a colour analysis and you turn out to be a dark autumn or a true summer. Those palettes are probably the most harmonious with you for the sake of looking effortless, elegant, glowing. If you’re an actress recording a tape for an audition, you want to look edgy, stiff or firm depending on the role you’re auditioning for. You don’t want to be looking your most approachable, kind, beautifully glowing self if you’re auditioning for Cruella. You’re not going to be able to sell the story. We go through how to bring those different effects out. You can create optical illusions that make
you appear angrier, more timid, frail, really sickly, outdated, or super trendy.
Colours have super powers to create many kinds of expressions for yourself. In the world of cinema, this is very powerful because the same actor can be cast into different roles. Colours can and do play a role in bringing that to life.
If you are shy, but you want people to notice you, I would look for the colours within your palette that really catch the eye, a mesmerizing appearance in your context. You look at the person with their colour and the harmony is so strong, and magnetizing that you can’t look away. You’re double taking on the person. I would want a colour like that because you can’t be ignored and on top of that you can still be shy. You can give someone a smile and that might be invitation enough for them to strike up a conversation. You can deploy little tricks like that, but you definitely need to know what colours are magnetizing, and amplifying your entire energy.
There isn’t a universal, magical colour that is just glowing on everybody. I don’t know the exact reason, but greens and blues and the in-between shades like the teal-y kind of tones, tend to be more forgiving on people within reason.
What is your favourite rom-com?
I really love music-themed rom-coms, like the Step Up series. I love when music is well-paired with the story to amp up the emotions and really carry the film. Dancing would be my all-time favourite rom-com.
What are some date outfit ideas?
Explore on outfits you already have. Let’s say you want to come across as flirtatious or cheeky for example. Drape different clothing items over yourself and ask questions whilst looking in the mirror. Is this cheeky? Or is the other outfit looking more cheeky? Suddenly the outfits will answer for you. Okay great. Out of
the options you have at home, which is the most successful at coming across the way you want to come across? You can define your own expression for how you want to come across. Almost like making a character brief for yourself.
Woods and her colour coordination what would you categorize her as in
How she is being portrayed is a bright season, bright winter going on bright spring. Mixing between the two every now and Crazy Stupid Love, Hannah wears more grays and blacks (except towards the end of the film she wears red). Please elaborate?
I would say that the shades of gray that they put her in are kind of taupe-y and warm, they’re not so cool tone, or steel-y. Not quite mushroomy, but almost clay-y in a
way, which has a warmth to them. I think it probably reads well on her. I think she is not very cool-toned. It’s hard to judge because they always dye her hair differently for every film. You can see how her eye colours come to life when she’s wearing the slightly more warm and muted tones. Because they’re using neutral colours, that is to support her character. It’s a perfect contrast for the Legally Blonde lawyer topic. Here, they have chosen these grey outfits, which is how you’d want to portray somebody very reserved. Her skin is great, her eyes are glowing, it’s not too heavy, but it’s still a dark colour. The
grays in the cardigan go with her skin to give it that nice smooth porcelain finish and really bring her eyes out. You don’t want to look flawless.
What would you describe Hannah’s colour
I would say that when they put her in these warmer greys, they probably were putting her in a dark autumn perhaps.
Last but not least, Aquamarine. Tell us about her mermaid colours.
She wears 2 key colours in the film: nude and aqua blue. They almost matched her skin tone with this nude dress. For me, they’re definitely going with the reference of the sea with the blue hair. It has the aqua colour (and her
name is aqua). I think this type of aqua is nice on her. She can carry off the lightness of this colour. I would say it’s maybe luminous. It creates a vibe that is a little bit magical. In her nude dress, she is going on a date. This outfit helps her come across sensual. The lustrous texture of the dress and her hair in waves. It brings a romantic vibe.
What colour coordination is Aquamarine’s character?
Light summer, maybe she’s a soft summer. With neutrals it’s harder. Certainly on the light end of the spectrum.
Are there any takeaways that you’d want to leave readers with?
Yes. If it’s a topic of dating, because I think
films, ask yourself how you want to come across. Do you want to come across a little bit shy? Do you want to come across quite gentle or sensual or sophisticated? There’s no right or wrong. Sometimes we want to experience all of these types of things at different times. Play around with it.

Have you ever watched the 2001 film The Wedding Planner? J-Lo does make it look pretty cool, but Anna Sourbati is here to reveal what it is truly like to make all of the hopes and dreams of a bride on their Big Day come true. Anna Sourbati is the founder of The Event Company in Athens, Greece. The Event Company does international weddings as well as corporate events, birthday bashes, and more. You don’t have to be a bride to appreciate all of Anna’s wisdom.
Planning a wedding is like starting from scratch and going as far as you can for it to be amazing. It takes time and patience, and at the same time needs creativity and ingenuity. It is something that I love very much, and this can be seen from the relationship I have with the couples from the very first moment we meet, till years after the event. Although, the best part is the wedding day, where all those things that you talk about for a long time and struggle to realize come true in front of you. You see the couple excited and happy. Then, you understand that your goal has been achieved.
It’s quite a demanding job, as you have to fulfill the couple’s dreams and make their wedding day as they have imagined! A simple day for us can be like little bombs
that explode in small spots, and you have to deactivate them without the customer being involved; trying to solve any problem immediately and managing the whole situation right. It can be very anxious sometimes, but this is what keeps you alive in this job.
The smallest event I have ever organized is an elopement for a couple in Mykonos. It was a unique experience, very personal and tender. It was much more demanding than usual, but it is something that has been etched in my memory. I always remember it.
One of our biggest events was the grand opening of the stadium for the AEK football team. It was an impressive and highly demanding event. AEK is one of the oldest and most popular football teams in Greece. Everything went as it should have, and as I wished actually; and it turned into an unforgettable experience for us and thousands of fans!
How can you tell when a couple is in love?
From the moment I get to know the new couple, I understand if they have passion and love between them, or if it is a planned and rushed wedding. In my opinion, those who take the step to get married should have thought about what they want and what they expect from their partner for a lifetime relationship, and not do things that are mandatory. I believe that joy, happiness, real love and feeling free is what gives us life.
What is your favourite theme or style that you have done?
I don’t have any specific theme that I prefer, because each couple is a new challenge and a new creative project for me. Many couples are from different nationalities, different religions, they want different styles in their weddings, and this is the part of the job that makes each new request interesting and unique. However, the events I have planned at Amanzoe in Peloponnese, have
a special value for me, as it is one of the most luxurious and spectacular locations I have worked with. The architecture, the aesthetics, the unsurpassed views and natural landscapes, the aura and peace that exudes from this space, create a lifetime experience.
Are there any places you have not visited that you want to visit in the future?
Over the years, I have organized several events in many beautiful and special locations that each one leaves a different taste. I have visited many countries and met many people and different cultures, a part of my job that I love. Two places I would really like to visit and make extravagant events at: “Amangiri” in Utah and “Aman Sveti Stefan” in Montenegro. Both places are of an exquisite beauty, a sense of “out of this world”...
I would really love to live this experience!
What is the most unique place/ location someone has had a wedding or event at?
I believe that the most beautiful place to hold an event or plan a wedding is Greece. It is a country known for its history, the treasure of its culture, the insurmountable natural landscape it offers, the islands with the blue-green waters, the wild nature, the northern villages of the country, the warm people All together make every experience in Greece unforgettable!
What is your favourite season and why?
Undoubtedly summer! The sun, the sea, the warm breeze, the carefreeness, evokes wonderful feelings. It is the period where everyone calms down, relaxes from everyday life and the routine of the whole year, and regains strength to go on. Despite the hard
work we have all summer long, I always steal time to rest and enjoy!
Do you have a favourite romance book or film? (If yes, what is it?)
I do have a favourite film, The Notebook. A love story about true love that never dies! Always somehow, even in tough times, if the couple is in love, they are going to figure anything out and will be together no matter what. Even if it doesn’t happen very often, it is nice to dream of it!
Anything else that you would want romance readers to know?
Listen to your heart! Try to be honest with your partners, tell them how you feel, communicate, discuss your thoughts and wishes. Have love and respect to one another. Love will conquer all!

What do you think of when you first think of surfing? High heels are definitely not the first thing that comes to mind. Hope Waidley has changed the game surfing in heels, in addition to being a talented musician.
What is your favorite rom-com?
How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, a classic.
When did you first learn to surf?
I started surfing in high school and learned by surfing Lake Michigan during wind swells! However, the first time I was ever exposed to it was in Florida as a kid.
What inspires you?
God inspires me with grace, freedom, and love. People inspire me with all of their precious little ways. Nature inspires me greatly. Books are always inspiring to me. Little things like vintage magazines, glitter, and cool outfits inspire me as well.
What does your typical day as Hope look like?
Every day is relatively different for me, but each day consists of some writing, reading, being outside, playing music, and pondering about life.
What are your favorite heels to surf in and why?
Probably the pink or red platform heels. I love anything platform.
What is one thing that is underrated about surfing?
Surfing is this beautiful interaction with nature, one that is constantly teaching us. The amount that we can learn from it is infinite.
How has your surfing fashion evolved over time?
For most of my life, I have constantly lost pieces of bikinis and because of this, I’ve been a big supporter of mismatched bathing suits. I’ve also always been fond of out-of-the-box fashion for surf. Rather than using a basic cover-up, why not find some funky lingerie robe from a thrift store? I suppose that my surfing fashion has only gotten weirder overtime. Surfing in heels was a way to mix a little glam fashion in there and have fun with it.
What is your go-to, cannot live without summer fashion item and why?
I have these platform, rhinestone sandals that are on the brink of being hideous, but always end up being my go-to slippers for the summer. They’re from a local brand in San Clemente which makes me happy.
What does mermaid aesthetic mean to you?
To me, mermaid aesthetic is a way to reflect the ocean through style and/or fashion naturally. The ocean is one of the most inspiring entities and incorporating its elements into a look provides an exquisite outcome. No matter how anyone portrays mermaid aesthetic, because it is influenced by the ocean’s elegance, there is never a time when I don’t find it to be beautiful.

Iconic mermaids deserve iconic photographers, and Cheryl Walsh goes above and beyond in her craft. Not only does she capture underwater portraiture, but she also teaches it to others.
I would have to say The Princess Bride is a favorite - such a classic. It’s a great story, really well-written, and just the lighthearted romp that I enjoy from time to time. And of course, there’s Splash, but that’s a bit obvious.
As with most photographers, unfortunately, the actual photography part is pretty minimal compared to all the time spent on the business side. But when I do a shoot, after the hours of setup with my assistant, rigging up all the gear, then working with the model and stylist to get them ready for the shoot, when we do start the shoot I get to sit on the bottom of the pool and suddenly everything goes quiet. I get these moments of peace and tranquility. No one can bother me when I’m sitting on the floor of my pool. I’m holding my breath and I get to watch this living artwork right in front of me. Watching the model with their hair, gown, and fabrics suspended in the water moving in slow motion is absolutely mesmerizing.
I get to work with the most wonderful models, designers, and makeup artists. All of them are so creative and have open hearts and minds to my ideas. I’ve been working with a lot of the same models
for years and they are such interesting, fun, inspiring, kind, and generous people. Without them, I’m basically an idiot sitting on the bottom of a pool photographing nothing. I print my own work, so I get to create these beautiful large-scale photographs on stunning papers, put them in huge elaborate frames, and watch people enjoy the work. I enjoy seeing people walk up to the work and get lost in the feeling of being completely relaxed underwater. I can sit in the corner of a gallery for hours and watch people react to my work - it’s very satisfying.
My current project has been a huge challenge. I did all of the underwater photoshoots and created a set of 79 underwater photographs that make up an entire Tarot card deck. I worked with 12 models and 17 designers, as each card is very elaborate and detailed. We produced the photoshoots in 2020, which was a pretty intense shooting schedule. It was during the pandemic, so we were very careful even though we were working outside in chlorinated water. Then I spent 2021 editing all of the images, 2022 working on the production side to get one thousand decks printed, and now, in 2023 I’m waiting for the decks to arrive. The global pandemic created supply chain issues that have delayed the project by a full year. I’ll be so relieved when they get here. The factory did send me one deck and I’ve got to say that I absolutely love it. Every little
detail is exactly what I wanted. Producing a product like this is vastly different than creating the fine art prints of my work that I sell all the time. It’s been a great learning experience, but also a huge challenge.
Mermaids, especially professional mermaids, are some of the most interesting subjects I get to photograph. Who knew that being a professional mermaid was a thing, right? But these people, men and women, work really hard at what they do. It’s a very difficult business to be in, but the good ones do it really well. I’m very fortunate to have photographed celebrity mermaids like Hannah Mermaid numerous times. Each year the Singapore Mermaid comes over and I get to photograph her. There are many more. Of course, they can hold their breath for an uncomfortably long time, but I’m mostly impressed by how effortlessly they move underwater. Having the right mermaid tail really helps and my favorites are all made by Finfolk Productions. They are a family-run business: twin sisters who grew up with the dream of being mermaids, so they made their own tails. Now they do that for people who wanted to be mermaids too. What a great job, right? I consider what I do to be classical, traditional, fine art portrait photography done in a studio. It just so happens that my studio is filled with
Communication is key to what I do. Notice how all of my subjects look completely relaxed and at ease in the water - that is because I’m in constant communication with them. My goal is for them to feel completely relaxed and express what they truly are, which is amazing, graceful, strong, brave, capable, confident, competent, powerful, and so much more than enough. They can’t feel that way unless they are completely at ease in the water. It’s my job to make sure they feel that way. What I’m asking them to do is very difficult, but I never want them to struggle. It’s not that we “can’t breathe” under the water, it’s that we “don’t even have to breathe.” It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe, but it’s beautiful. My goal is to create artwork that shares that feeling with others. We are working in my underwater studio, so it’s a very controlled environment. We do the work underwater then come up and talk. I give positive feedback and make sure they are feeling really good about what they are doing.
What is your favourite rom-com?
My favourite rom-com has to be Notting Hill.
What does a day in the life of an underwater photographer look like?
It depends if it is a shoot day or if I’m in pre production or post production. Planning for an underwater shoot takes a lot of preparation and thoughtful logistics. There is so much to think about (models, styling, equipment, locations).
If I’m shooting, it is an early start and a detailed shot list that myself and my team follow throughout the day.
What is the most underrated part of your work?
Hunting for locations and visiting the most beautiful places.
What is your favorite part of your work?
Working with incredible, fascinating people and the buzz of creating a unique and memorable image.
What is the most challenging shoot you have had and why?
My most challenging shoot was in a freezing quarry in Wales, wearing a drysuit, and shooting in poor visibility at 20 meters. Underwater shoots are challenging when the conditions are difficult and you are feeling the cold.
Have you ever shot a mermaid?
All my models are mermaids.
How do you direct your model underwater?
I begin the day with an outline of what we will shoot and how we will do it. When my model is in the water, I talk them through the steps and then it’s just a matter of timing and repetition until all parts are perfect. It takes time and lots of countdowns.
This issue would not be complete without a conversation with a mermaid. Luckily, we spoke with one of the most iconic mermaid performers ever, Hannah Fraser. Hannah has been performing as a mermaid for two decades, and cares deeply about underwater ocean conservation. In addition to her efforts raising awareness about ocean protection and conservation, Hannah swims with all kinds of sea life from Tiger Sharks, whales, turtles, dolphins, rays, seals, and more.
What is your favorite rom-com?
Splash of course!
What is the most underrated thing about your mermaid profession?
Dealing with water going inside your sinuses and still making it look pretty, while holding your breath, with blurry eyes open underwater! Still smiling!
What advice would you give aspiring mermaids?
For aspiring mermaids, I advise that they should get plenty of swimming practice before they start hiring out as performers. You really need to know how to look graceful and competent as a mermaid before you introduce all the elements of performance at an event, children, photoshoots, pressure, etc! Also, make alliances with UW photographers that just want to play and experiment. Try new things. Don’t just copy other mermaids. Get quirky and original with your own brand to stay apart from the crowd. Make sure if you are performing you have practiced with your costume. Does your tail fit well? Do you get foot cramps after a certain time swimming? Does your top stay on? Is your wig secure? For how long? Does your crown get your hair all tangled in it? Does your makeup smudge or run? How long can you swim for before you get too tired? Do you have a routine of swimming moves, dance moves, poses you can do to keep it interesting? You can’t just sit on the side of the pool, you have to make this a performance act where your mermaid character is believable! What other skills can you incorporate into your act? Can you juggle? Fire breathe? Dance? Magic tricks?
Do you know any male mermaids?/ have you worked with any? What was that like?
I’ve worked a lot with Merman Jax, and he is super professional, talented underwater, sweet natured, and willing to try anything. We’ve had some fun with quirky underwater concepts! We did a gender bender role reversal shoot of a 50’s era style. He wore a frilly housewife apron over his tail and served me tea from a china teapot, and I wore a white mens shirt, suspenders on my tail, smoking a pipe on an armchair and reading a Readers Digest magazine with a cover that showed men protesting for equal rights and vasectomy freedom! It was pretty topical, as it was released as women’s reproductive rights are in further jeopardy in the USA.
Do you have a favorite whale or dolphin?
I had an incredible dream of a white whale with lips kissing my head. The touch exploded me with bliss in the dream. I realized when I woke up that it was a Beluga whale, which I still haven’t met in real life to this day... but I believe it’s my spirit animal!
Mermaid love advice?
Treat every day like a new day with a partner. Allow growth and change within the relationship. We are constantly evolving. Recognize that your jealousy is yours to deal with. You get to look at your own insecurities and find the triggers and take responsibility for them. Recognize and walk away from patterns that are not in your highest alignment. Communicate deeply with true honesty about your vulnerable self... your wishes, dreams, preferences, boundaries, desires, and goals.

What is your favorite rom-com?
The Holiday!
When did you first start illustrating?
I’ve wanted to be an artist since preschool, but first started illustrating in college when studying fashion design at Kent State University.
What is your favorite brand collaboration you’ve done so far and why?
I don’t have a favorite, I have so many great clients that I could have only dreamed about when I was younger.
What inspires you?
People watching at coffee shops, anything with fluidity, motion, and beautifully draped fabrics. I love soft and feminine designs, silhouettes, and shapes.
What does a typical day as a fashion illustrator look like?
It really varies. Sometimes it’s emails, contracts, phone meetings all day. Sometimes it’s sketching live at an event in-store or at a gala. Sometimes it’s focused on the marketing aspect. I wear all hats as an entrepreneur, so you might be surprised some days have very little drawing going on.
How would you describe your personal style?
I have two styles. My style at events is sophisticated, chic, and feminine. My style at home is jeans and a t-shirt with my hair in a messy bun. It all depends on what I’m doing.
Advice for new illustrators?
Never give up. It’s easy to give up after your first year of “not making it”. It took me quite a long time to really get rolling and for me to not have to reach out for work anymore. If anything, I’ve gotten better at saying no to projects and events that don’t align with me.
What is your favorite wardrobe staple for summer?
Loose-fitting summer linen dresses!
Do you like mermaids/have you ever illustrated mermaids?
Not mermaids, but I’ve always been fascinated by the sea, how the light catches water, and the movement of waves. Here are a few sea inspired pieces I did way back when: (see right)
What is your favorite style for going to the beach?
I’m all about comfort when going to the beach. I bought the best sun hat when I was in Hawaii that is my go to for all vacation/ beach trips. I gravitate toward solid bikinis over prints and cat eye sunglasses.

One of the most iconic part of mermaids (besides their magical tails) is their long, luscious locks. Here to tell us more about taking care of our hair is Salon Tullio.
1. Your skin is your biggest organ, including your scalp. Any products you are using on your hair, from shampoo, to conditioner, and styling aids, get absorbed directly into your bloodstream through your scalp. Most products are loaded with chemicals. Not only can they be harmful for your hair, but they also can have a huge impact on your overall health. We highly recommend being cautious of this and using clean products that are Organic, SLS, Paraben, and Nickel free. Some of our product recommendations are: Tullio Hair Care, and Oway Organics.
2. Identify your hair type and what your hair needs are. Some products are not for everyone as various hair types respond differently. From there, find and use products that are going to be in best support for nourishing your hair back to health.
3. For ultimate hair health, we highly recommend cutting or trimming your hair every 6-12 weeks. By doing this, it actually promotes hair growth more quickly, reduces split ends plus breakage, and will revitalize hair, giving it a thicker, fuller look. In addition, we recommend using a deep conditioning hair mask at least once a week to keep your hair full of moisture and vitality.
Contrary to popular belief, the sun can be nourishing and essential for hair health, as hair needs vitamin D just as much as our bodies do. However, excessive sun exposure can reduce moisture from the hair follicle and can leave hair feeling dry or brittle. Our recommendation would be to use Oway Organics After Sun Hair Mask. This will deeply provide long-lasting moisturize and repair your hair. Results include your scalp and hair fibers full of hydration, adding loads of shine.
Rinsing your hair after being in chlorine is very important. Get all of the chemicals out, so it doesn’t strip the natural oils and vitamins from your hair! Our best recommendations for this would be to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, and use a moisturizing mask as a conditioner. You may also use coconut oil or castor oil, as these will be extremely nourishing and will repel any damage that chlorine may cause.

1. For some sexy, natural beach waves, use Oway Organics Sea Salt Spray on damp hair. This will be sure to give you a casual, yet sophisticated look.
2. For a summer evening look, slick your hair back with a gel into a high ponytail. Option to leave bangs pulled out or slicked back. Proceed to braid the ponytail. Voila, a classy look to dress up or down.
3. Using some styling aids to give your hair texture, gather your hair half up half down with a groovy clip. This is one of our personal favorite looks.
1. Blow dry or air dry your hair about half way. Brush your hair smooth while still slightly damp. Part your hair down the middle into two separate pieces and begin to twist each section of hair, then twist them together into a ponytail like shape. Use a hair tie at the bottom to hold hair together and leave it twisted until hair is fully dry before untwisting it. This will leave your hair with beautiful looking mermaid waves.
2. Allow hair to air dry a quarter of the way. Then proceed to braid your hair in two separate braids. Leave braided for a minimum of an hour for a beach wave look.
3. Smooth your hair using a blow dryer a quarter of the way dry. Then using
small sections of hair, roll them up into a set of velcro rollers using bobby pins to hold them in place. Once your whole head of hair is set in rollers, keep your hair in the rollers for a minimum of 10-20 minutes. The longer you leave them in, the more full and luscious your mermaid-like locks will be.
If you’re wanting to enter the world of hair care, it’s important to have strong listening skills, patience, and be a people person. These three attributes are key to success within this industry, as all three must be applied on a daily basis, whether it be catering to your clientele or working with associates. Our second word of advice would be to take time to discover what you’re truly most passionate about within the hair industry. Get really good at it and develop a niche for yourself.
We believe the most underrated product that promotes hair health for everyday use would be a leave-in conditioner with sun protectant agents. Our personal favorite is ‘Detangle This’ by Tullio Hair Care.
We are currently in the process of expanding our ecommerce platform, as well as developing an all organic hair care line. All of our products will soon be available for purchase on Amazon and our website! Thank you all for your love and support!
“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul”
For Cow, inhale to drop your belly and lift your gaze up towards the sky. For Cat, plug your belly in towards your spine and release your head downwards.
Keep your left hand and right knee down on the ground. Swing your right hand back behind you to grab hold of your left foot. Keep your chest open and use the resistance between your lifted hand and foot to find your balance. Repeat on the other side.
From Downward Dog, extend one leg up towards the sky. Claw through your fingertips and send your gaze towards your toes while keeping length through your spine.
From High Lunge, swivel your back foot flat so that your heels become in line with one another, while keeping your front knee pointing forward. Bring your arms out to a ‘T’, relax your shoulders, and tuck your tailbone.
From Warrior 2, bring your front hand up and back as if you’re going to high-five the wall behind you. Send your back hand down your back leg. Keep a generous bend to your front knee to challenge your muscles.
From Reverse Warrior, cartwheel both hands back to the ground to frame your foot. Step back to a Plank or a 3 Legged Plank. Hug your elbows towards your ribs as you slowly lower halfway to the ground. Try to stay hovering rather than dropping your belly to the surface.
Slowly push upwards out of your Chaturanga by extending your arms straight and dropping your pelvis towards the ground. Open your chest and send your gaze upward to open the heart.
From a seated or standing position, end your practice by bringing your hands together at heart center. Take in one more deep round of breath. Recite any affirmations as needed and take that energy with you throughout the rest of your day.

While skin care and hair care routines are popular online, dental care is often over looked. Here to tell us more about gaining a Swoonworthy smile is Dr. Alex Jundt, Co-Owner and dentist of Smile Theory at Millenial Park Dentistry in Chicago, IL.
The Holiday. It’s also one of my yearly go-to holiday films.
My advice to anyone with braces is to be extra diligent with your oral hygiene. The brackets and attachments that accompany traditional braces serve as an invitation for more plaque and bacteria to hang around your teeth and especially your gums. This accumulation of plaque leads to gingivitis, which is characterized by bleeding, puffy, and often painful gums. In addition to routine brushing and flossing, I recommend tacking on one additional cleaning with your dental professional. Investing in plaque-reducing home care tools, such as an electric toothbrush and water-pik will help you manage the extra plaque accumulation more easily. An extra professional cleaning combined with proper homecare will keep your gums and teeth healthier during and after your treatment.
Last year, a dentistry-themed romcom book came out, A Brush With Love, about a dental student and oral surgeon who fall in love. Have you heard of it?
While I didn’t read the book, I absolutely love the title! I treat a lot of couples in my practice. Some even book their appointments together. The best part of these types of appointments are the random bits of information I glean from each partner. “My husband rarely flosses”
the wife whispers. “My wife lost her retainer on vacation”, the husband admits. Through it all, I’m a firm believer that a couple who flosses together, stays together!
What happens when two people kiss?
A single kiss lasting anywhere from 5 – 15 seconds can result in the exchange of over 75 million bacteria. So, to keep you and your partner’s mouth healthy, it’s always a good idea to practice good oral hygiene and make sure to visit your dental professional at least 2 times a year for check-ups. This is another reason why I say, “couples who floss together, stay together!”
How to keep the breath minty fresh for kissing?
This is a great question. Odor-causing bacteria are hidden all over the mouth. In fact, there are hundreds of millions of bacteria in the mouth; some good and some bad. While brushing and flossing will remove a good portion of odor-causing bacteria, daily tongue cleaning with either your toothbrush or a gentle tongue scraper will help remove the odor-causing bacteria that lives on your tongue. Staying hydrated is key and can help reduce bad breath. Routine cleanings with a dental professional will remove plaque and tartar beneath the gum line, which can be causing a lot of odor from bacteria. It is also a good idea to talk to your dentist about medications and allow them to do a thorough evaluation of your tonsils, back of the throat, and lymph nodes to assess if there are any other, more serious factors affecting your breath.
Have you ever seen someone stuck to someone else with their braces?
While I have seen a wide variety of dental emergencies, I have yet to see this! With the increase in popularity for clear aligners to straighten the teeth over metal braces, this may be something we see less of, but I will never rule it out. If that happens, contact your dental provider immediately.
*The wires in traditional braces can tend to cut/tear at the inside of the cheeks and lips. Dental wax can be placed over any rough areas.
*If you’re worried about this happening, or simply want to consider straightening the teeth without metal braces, you may be a candidate for clear aligners, such as Invisalign. In contrast to metal braces, these systems use a series of clear, plastic trays to gradually align the teeth.
What’s the best smile you have seen in a rom-com?
I would have to give it to one of Hollywood’s rom-com Queens, Julia Roberts. Recently with the emphasis on having the “perfect Hollywood smile,” I have seen an increase in the number of patients opting for cosmetic veneers. While veneers have helped many of my patients achieve a more beautiful, balanced smile, I also admire the individualization and characterization of enhancing one’s natural teeth. Julia Roberts has big, beautiful, natural teeth with their own signature look. I often encourage patients to try alternative cosmetic-enhancing techniques, such as whitening, aligners, and gum contouring to enhance the shape of their natural teeth before opting for cosmetic veneers.
Support:
My advice to anyone pursuing a career in the field of dentistry is to surround yourself with people who encourage you and facilitate your professional journey. Surround yourself with family and friends, who offer their support and understand sacrifices you will likely have to make in order to pursue your career.
Mentorship:
Finding a great mentor can take some time and patience, but once you do they can help to encourage you, assist with making meaningful connections, and finding other opportunities to help you achieve your goals. Mentorship, whether you are in high school, in dental school already, or have been practicing for years, is essential to continued personal and professional growth and success.
Balance:
My other piece of advice is to stay focused and don’t get discouraged when things get difficult. Find a balance between studying, working, and doing healthy activities you enjoy.
Volunteering:
I recommend finding ways to positively impact your community through dentistry. Whether it’s through volunteering or partnering with existing organizations, you are positively affecting the community, while exercising your passion and professionalism in the field. It is very rewarding and motivating!

The practice of using essential oils for therapeutic benefit is aromatherapy. Anna, the founder of Elä Life, tells us about aromatherapy and her favourite bath time rituals.
What is your favorite rom-com?
It would probably be Notting Hill as my top favourite, although I also love The Other Woman and just watched Your Place or Mine and loved that too!
What are some health benefits to aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy has many benefits from helping managing stress and anxiety, calming your nervous system, feeling energised, helping bring clarity and reducing brain fog, improving sleep, and aiding your general wellbeing.
Please tell us about Elä? How did it start? What was the inspiration?
Elä Life is the sister brand to our homewares brand ALSO Home. I wanted to create a brand which provided the finishing touches to a home through fragrance, but also to take it a step further and create products that helped our customers with their wellbeing and selfcare.
What is an example of a bath time aromatherapy ritual?
My favourite bath time aromatherapy ritual is quite simple – I light a candle, choosing whichever blend I am particularly in need of – Nurture No 2 if I need some self love, Rest No 5 if I need to relax and feel calm. My rituals are all about layering our aromatherapy products – by starting with lighting a candle, you enable the essential oils to permeate into the space you’re in, but also the simple act of pausing to strike the match and light the wick allows you to slow down and be in the moment. After running my bath to about half full, I pour in a large handful of our bath salts in the same blend I’ve chosen. I take a few deep breaths to enjoy the
aromatherapy in the room before stepping in. After my bath I will moisturise with either our body & bath oil or our body lotion.
What are some of the best aromatherapy recipes for summertime?
In the summer I listen to my body and what it needs, everything feels lighter and brighter, so I tend to choose our more uplifting, refreshing blends to compliment this – Begin No 1 or Pause No 3.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
You should never use essential oils directly on the skin – they should always be used within the carrier oil. They are powerful, potent natural ingredients. We don’t recommend them if you are pregnant or have other skin conditions, because they can cause a reaction. Ultimately though, you know your body and skin and should monitor how you react.
Humans are mostly made of water, how does water come into play with aromatherapy?
We love adding our essential oil blends into our electric diffuser to diffuse a light mist into the room along with the full power and benefits of the essential oils. This mist helps bring moisture into the air and allows us to absorb the essential oils more effectively.
Where do the Elä ingredients come from?
We buy all our ingredients from UK based suppliers – we’ve worked hard to choose suppliers who are as local to us as possible to limit our carbon footprint. It’s not always possible, but where we can, we do.
“I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home, only to no home I’d ever known. I was just taking her hand to help her out of a cab. And it was like… magic.”

What is your favorite rom-com?
Hands down When Harry Met Sally.
What is your favorite part of home?
The people that are in it.
What is your favorite part of the beach?
Everything. It’s hard to pick one thing. The first peek of the water over the dunes, when your feet hit the sand, and you can hear the waves crashing and the sun is shining down on you. It’s just amazing and a full sensory experience. Of course treasure hunting is one of my favorite parts.
When did you first start making your art?
I first started making art work in college. I lived in Lake Erie for a couple of years and I could find a lot of sea glass there at Presque Isle. I made pieces as gifts for Christmas for my family and friends. I took a break for a while, and then during the pandemic I was at home with my three kids doing the virtual learning classes. I started doing it again as a way to stay sane. I started selling it for the first time.
What makes a house a home?
I think the family photos that you have in your house. It’s always been important to me to let the kids pick the colors in their rooms and the decorations. Anytime that
we have moved, we do their rooms first and make sure they are happy, settled, and comfortable.
Where do you find inspiration?
I think it is all around us, especially in mother nature. Just being at the beach and finding different material, it will tell me what to make.
What is the most unique material you have used for your art?
I use a lot of shells and driftwood. I’m not sure if it’s unique, but it’s definitely different and interesting. I started making the decoupage shell trinket dishes, and I didn’t know that people use napkins to make them. Napkins on oyster shells and then painting the trim. That’s probably the most interesting material.
What is your favorite thing about sea glass?
It is the fact that it starts out as trash and it has become this sought after treasure. You start with these broken bottles in the ocean and after decades of weathering with the sand and the waves. Each piece has been on this journey and has its own little story.
What is your favorite part of your creative process?
Finding the material. Getting to go to the beach and look for shells and driftwood. And then turning that into artwork and jewelry and sharing that with others.
Do you have a shape in mind that you search for, or does it come to you?
It usually comes to me. I’ll pick up a piece and the color and shape will speak to me and tell me what to make. It just happened the other day on the beach. I’m like: this would be the perfect sailboat. That triangular piece. Or I’ll find certain pieces and I’m like: this’ll be a flamingo or a dolphin. Sometimes the pieces tell me what I have to make.
I’m honestly living my best life right now. I try to go to the beach at least a couple of times a week to treasure hunt and spend time outside. It’s so magical. There are big, beautiful, old oak trees draped in Spanish moss.
It is only fitting we include sea-themed homes in our sea-themed issue. In Sleepless in Seattle, Sam Baldwin lives in a houseboat. The Last Song, though a little more romdrom than com, has an adorable beach-side cottage in it. Cheesy as can be, Yours, Mine, and Ours (the 2005 remake) has a cute anecdote about the beautiful lighthouse keeper. Joy Tubby does not live in a lighthouse, but she got engaged, married, honeymoon-ed in, and volunteers for lighthouses. Hence, she is the perfect person to tell us about love in lighthouses.
I have been a lighthouse enthusiast since I was a child, and often visited them on family holidays. The first lighthouse I visited was at South Stack Lighthouse, aged 9, but I think my passion for lighthouses began when I was 12 and stayed near Strete in Devon. I would ask my parents to stop the car each evening after a day out, to watch the light flashing along the coast!
Lighthouse Meetcute:
Patrick (my partner) and I are both members of the Association of Lighthouse Keepers, and we first met at the AGM of the Association outside Trinity House, the headquarters for the lighthouse authority of England and Wales.
We are both keen lighthouse enthusiasts. As well as being a volunteer for the Association of Lighthouse Keepers (Website, Shop Manager, and Social Media), I am also Secretary of Happisburgh Lighthouse Trust, our local lighthouse, which is the UK’s only independently operated working lighthouse. It is funded entirely by voluntary contributions, and we
help out as lighthouse stewards on public open days.
In addition, I am the author of Lighthouse Accommodation. The book is a guide to lighthouses throughout the world offering holiday accommodation, and on my website: lighthouseaccommodation.co.uk, I have a directory of lighthouses and related places to visit as well as to stay in. One of my recent blog posts is about lighthouse wedding venues.
All of this is done in my spare time, as I also have a day job!
As we both love lighthouses, we often visit lighthouses, often with the ALK. On one occasion, we were in Scotland with the ALK visiting Skerryvore Lighthouse, one of the most remote offshore lighthouses, around 11 miles from Tiree. Whilst there, Patrick proposed to me - I said yes, of course!
So it seemed only appropriate for us to get married in a lighthouse! The following year we were married at Nash Point Lighthouse in Wales. At the time, you could get married halfway up the tower, and it was the only operational lighthouse with a wedding licence. The wedding venue had a very appropriate lighthouse theme. The tables were named after lighthouses, and we had handmade lighthouse chocolates as favours (made by me!)
How do you make a chocolate lighthouse?
I had a chocolate mould with a number of mini lighthouses, so I could produce a few at a time. I made some in milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate, so there was a mixture in each favour box!
Honeymoon details:
We spent our honeymoon in the lighthouse cottage and visited more lighthouses during the week with friends, sharing our wedding cake on the boat landing slip at Skokholm Island!
What advice would you offer new lighthouse enthusiasts?
Definitely join the Association of Lighthouse Keepers (www.alk.org. uk), where you will meet like-minded enthusiasts and get the chance to go to events and places you can’t normally get to. A great book for lighthouse bagging (as we are often referred to) in the UK is The British Lighthouse Trail by Sarah Kerr. If you want to visit Happisburgh Lighthouse, which is the UK’s only independently operated working lighthouse, visit the website or instagram for details of public open days. Private visits can also be arranged.
You’ll need a head for heights if you climb the tower, as it is very open inside - there are two floors at the top, but no floors on the way up! And we’re always looking for more volunteers to help on our open days.

What is your favorite rom-com?
Everything Nancy Meyers touches.
Where do you find inspiration?
So many places. I have a bad Instagram disassociation habit, endlessly scrolling and screenshotting when I’m stressed or can’t sleep, but I love an art fair, a good neighborhood tour, a clever piece of journalism, a well styled stoop, a beautifully merchandised store, a party I wish I threw.
You launched your lifestyle brand Feste two weeks prior to Covid, what was that like?
Disheartening. It’s hard to sulk about it as so many people lost so much more than a few months (years?) on a work project, but it made me continually come back to my purpose. I’m doing this to make it easy, effortless, and fun for people get together, no occasion necessary.
What is your favorite kind of event to host?
I’m such a seasonal and holidays person, so I’m not sure I can pick one. Right now,
I’m craving a really beautiful and generous lunch get-together for a birthday or a celebration. Something with lots of early spring flowers, those first bottles of rosé of the season, and just easy sunshine.
Advice to anyone wanting to host an event?
Lean into your own hosting style. Not everyone needs to be Martha or throw massive black tie soirées. If you love having a few friends over for game night or prefer movie nights with your family or want everyone to leave promptly by 9, plan an event that makes sense for you! Guests can tell when it comes from a place of comfort, fun, and hospitality, and you should feel happy and authentic at your own event.
This issue is mermaid themed, do you have a favorite mermaid film or tv show?
Splash. I’ll hear no other options.
Where do you curate your products from?
My team and I work really hard to find things that we would genuinely love and use. I look around my house every morning and I see the same things that are in our shop and on our site. If it isn’t something I’d be thrilled to have in my house, to give to a friend, to use in our events, we don’t carry it. We have a mix of vintage, table top, gifts, pantry, and fun party supplies, and it works for us.
What is your favorite floral arrangement?
We do elaborate and intricate florals all day for the shop, for the restaurant, and for events. I love nothing more in my own space than weird heritage blooms or spare elegant flowering branches. Grand scale, but very simple.
If you could cast yourself in a rom-com, which would it be and why?
I’m very lucky to live in a RomCom with my husband of 19 years. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
How did you meet your husband?
We met in college- we ran against each other in a student council election.
What are your top three summer essentials for the home and for out and about?
1. Citronella incense—I’m crazy about the one from Skeem. I’m always the
guest getting bitten, so these are my heavy-handed hostess gift at any summer outing. As soon as the sun goes down, I’m quick to remind that it’s probably time to break those out.
2. A really great oversized pitcher or carafe. If I’m hosting outside, I prefer not to have to manage a complicated bar set up, so I love a drink or cocktail that I can batch before guests arrive and serve easily al fresco. No muss, no fuss indeed.
3. Candles. If you’re like me, the second the days get longer, I can’t wait to be outside. I love to extend that lingering sunset with a few great pillars or tapers—I tuck them into a collection of assorted glass jars I keep outside and layer some fragrant herbs in around them (I truly hate bugs). Everyone looks great in the candle light and it extends the life of that patio. Sold to me.
What is more relaxing than the beach? Possibly poetry about the beach. We love romantic reflection and melodic prose.
Your skin feels the wind first As your eyes greet the water Lungs expanding as The draw overpowers
Hot salty air Toys with your hair
As the sun meets your face The body moves with grace
Sand surrenders beneath every step Silky drops of light Flicker across a surface Wet
Whispered invitations from Crushed velvet curling waves Shush delicately, framing your name Heartbeats quickly overtaken
Colorful fabrics cascade from your arms
As you race towards unknown ocean lore Where only the depths’ mysteries can keep you warm
Submerged in cold currents and foaming pools
Head tilted up and chest arching back A thoroughly familiar cocoon
Drop everything and succumb
The water already knows It’s where you become
Her stony gaze
Evokes days beyond days
The pearl she wears at her throat
Holds her soul
Captured close
Reflections of Watery marble
Voice like granite
Waves lay idle
Rising from liquid salt
Scales flaking
Drops her jaw
It’s the siren call
You think she calls to you She calls to herself
The voice you hear is of no breath in It’s an exhale from deep within
Isolated she floats remote A beauty only seen by others
Never the self
Envied for a voice she cannot hear She sings for sensations
Empty sounds
Reverberating tears
Perhaps we spite her beauty
Revere her voice
Lose ourselves to her presence
When all she knows is the oceans resistance
Shell or sea glass collecting allows you to admire the patterns of nature, create awareness of your surroundings, and feel a sense of accomplishment when you find the perfect shell or stone to add to your collection. Digging through sand or dipping hands in the ocean can be incredibly therapeutic. Not everyone has access to oceans or lakes to find these materials. Luckily, there are many other forms of collecting: feathers, books, tea cups, dolls, trash, shoes, photography of coffee cups, floors, and doors.
To celebrate hidden treasures and the art of collecting, we have decided to gather some hidden treasure ourselves... collectible playing cards. When I was in college, I used to play Hot Guy Go Fish with my gal pals (it is a very fun DIY, so I highly recommend making some with big index cards). In the vein of this game, we have decided to create RomCom Go Fish (though not every set will be fish-themed). Do you have any love triangles? We hope so (or not).
Detach the five of shells and the Queen of mermaids and save them. Every issue will have new cards, and eventually it will make a card deck for a very fun game.
