You provide the energy and the momentum to positively impact the health of our community. Foundation donors have always been at the forefront of initiatives to propel us forward.

INNOVATIONS IN MEDICINE Through a record-breaking initiative in the early 2000s, more than 700 community leaders, including Bill and Gay Solomon, helped enable UT Southwestern to lead the way into a new era of scientific discovery and delivery of medical care.

PETER O’DONNELL JR. BRAIN INSTITUTE

BUILDING THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE Spurred by an unprecedented lead gift of $100 million from Governor Clements, supporters of the Foundation and UT Southwestern rallied together to bring Dallas the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital.

Peter O’Donnell has inspired a new wave of philanthropic leadership that recognizes how ongoing advances in brain disorder research and a multi-disciplinary approach are opening major opportunities for transformative change in treating brain illness and injury. Karl Hoblitzelle and Hoblitzelle Foundation have shown an enduring commitment to the advancement of our city and state. For its entire 75-year history, Hoblitzelle Foundation has sought to fill gaps that others might not see. Its leaders have worked to fully leverage others’ giving through gifts of land and matching funds to magnify the capital available for the strategic priorities of the state. Karl Hoblitzelle established an equally enduring commitment to improving the health of the community. He helped start our Foundation and the medical school as a primary founding donor and far-sighted leader. G E N E R AT I O N S OF GENEROSITY

Karl Hoblitzelle’s vision included a great medical center for the Southwestern U.S. His early gifts, including 70 acres of land, were critical to the growth of UT Southwestern.

Beth Kahn and her family have deeply inspired innovation in brain cancer research and in creating the next generation of leaders to support our mission — The Cary Council. Beth was an incredible mother and a gifted teacher who nurtured and taught all who knew her, causing her family, friends, doctors, and everyone she knew to reach for more and to seek their best. She remains an extraordinary role model and inspiration. And in many ways, her impact is just beginning.

Michael and Alex Kahn, The Cary Council

Beth and Gary’s children, Michael Kahn and Lauren Rosenbloom, continue to inspire the next generation of our supporters. Michael inspired The Cary Council, a group of visionary young leaders who are carrying on the tradition of giving with meaning.

In honor of Beth’s 60TH birthday, the Kahn family, inspired by Beth’s Roots & Wings philosophy, created a community campaign to raise money for glioblastoma research through the Beth F. Kahn Roots & Wings Fund for Brain Cancer Research. More than 200 donors have supported the promising research of exceptional leaders in the field.

RESEARCHERS DISCOVER POTENTIAL NEW TARGET FOR TREATING GLIOBLASTOMA

The Beth F. Kahn Roots & Wings Fund supports UT Southwestern researchers who have discovered a new way to inhibit the growth of this type of brain cancer, opening the door for new treatment strategies. “These findings change our fundamental understanding of the molecular basis of glioblastoma, and how to treat it. GAY AND BILL SOLOMON

FOUNDING COMMUNITY LEADERS

“The entire citizenship of Dallas and of the Southwest will be immeasurably benefitted in their future health and happiness by such a great medical center, and the good that can come from such an undertaking, particularly in its research departments, will contribute to the health of the entire nation.” From the Minutes of a 1943 meeting of the Boards of the Dallas Chamber and Dallas Citizens Council

EDITH AND PETER O’DONNELL

Peter O’Donnell has worked to put many disciplines, including human nutrition, exercise physiology, and now the understanding and treatment for brain illness and injury, on the soundest possible scientific footing. The Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute, established with the O’Donnells’ lead gift, will improve untold lives by bringing together transformative research and patient-centered care.

Bill Solomon, a past Foundation Chairman and Trustee, believes in bringing the benefits of research to more people through patient-centered, quality-focused care. Throughout his roles at the Foundation and as Chairman of three campaigns for UT Southwestern that have raised more than $1 billion, he has provided extraordinary means, leadership, and passion to provide the highest quality care in our community.

JULIE AND KEN HERSH

MONCRIEF FAMILY

The Moncrief Family, including new Foundation Trustee Kit Moncrief, is devoted to ensuring the community has access to leading health care, and advancing cancer treatment — including prevention and post-treatment services. The Moncrief Cancer Institute and the Monty and Tex Moncrief Medical Center in Fort Worth are now realities in North Texas through their extraordinary vision.

LYDA HILL

Lyda Hill, a Foundation Honorary Trustee, believes “science is the answer.” She has worked tirelessly to change the world for the better. She provided funds to establish the Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics at UT Southwestern to advance this critical discipline that uses big data and pattern recognition to exponentially increase the ability to prevent, detect, and treat disease of all kinds.

Ken and Julie Hersh, a Foundation Trustee, passionately champion early detection in depression and mood disorders, clinical research to support individual diagnoses, and the extension of mental health knowledge into schools and a broad network of physicians’ offices. Their lead gift established the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care at UT Southwestern, now reaching thousands of previously unreached patients.

Funding Science can Boost Texas Economy by Foundation Chairman Robert B. Rowling and Trustee James R. Huffines From The Dallas Morning News

“…research and innovation need more than public funding. Private citizens help make these discoveries possible by recognizing needs, taking action and using their talents and treasure to fill important gaps in talent acquisition and early-stage research…Public funding, artfully woven together with private donations from North Texans, changes and improves the trajectory of medical history.” Nancy Wiener Marcus has a keen interest in advocating for and supporting work that elevates the capabilities of UT Southwestern in our community. Nancy’s recent work as a passionate advocate for the Pancreatic Cancer Prevention Program has been in sharing its purpose and encouraging others to raise awareness.

After making a generous, leading gift to support the Program, she said, “I have been concerned about the rise of pancreatic cancer for years…I hope my gift will inspire others to contribute funding to fight pancreatic cancer or support another area important to them, so we can all make an impact in saving lives.”

Ms. Marcus’ advocacy includes social media posts and an event to raise awareness of the Program.
