There are brilliant students who have the potential to be great doctors and scientists, but who don’t have the financial resources to go to medical school. Your support can make the difference in a career that advances medicine for the benefit of all of us.

An Elite Medical School Needs Elite Medical Students. UT Southwestern trains more doctors than any other medical center in the Southwest, and its scientists have transformed medical practice and saved countless lives. Because of its outstanding academic reputation, it appeals to the nation’s and the world’s best students. But in a competitive economy, UT Southwestern must be competitive to attract the

opportunity to attend UT Southwestern regardless of their financial ability.

The median four-year cost of medical school was $298,538 for private schools and $226,447 for public schools in 2015, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Data in a report from AAMC also tells us that the overwhelming majority of recent medical school graduates have debt. The median debt for those who graduated two years ago was $180,000. And debt levels for medical school graduates and medical school costs of attendance have each increased faster than inflation.

What’s the impact? Scholarships are vital to attracting the best students, in Texas and from out of state. These funds can make the financial difference that helps to educate a doctor. In the words of UT Southwestern students:

Medical School students review clinical information through an integrated, team-based learning curriculum at UT Southwestern.

H O D I N : THE SPIRIT OF MEDICAL WISDOM AND HUMAN UNDERSTANDING Every year, since our founding of the Medical School, the Foundation has presented the Ho Din Award, the highest honor for a graduating medical student. Past recipients include Nobel Prize Laureate Joe Goldstein, who was presented the award in 1966. A more recent award went to Thomas Heyne in 2012, a selfless young doctor devoting his energies to caring for “the poorest of the poor.” During breaks in medical school, Heyne made medical mission trips to Peru, Haiti, Honduras, Uganda, Ethiopia, India and the poorest areas of Mexico. Dr. Heyne was the inspiration, working with Foundation Honorary Trustee Caren Prothro, in establishing The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship program chapter in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which will develop young leaders inspired to embrace Albert Schweitzer’s commitment to service and compassion for people in need.
