When someone loves what they do, there is no hiding it. It is heard – not just through their words, but in the genuineness of their voice. It shows in their body language as they relate to people. Their passion and compassion, as in Lisa N. Hughes’ case, is palpable. The calling Lisa has followed to celebrate life may seem out of the ordinary, but so is she. Lisa is the owner and Funeral Director at LN Hughes Funeral Services in Ponchatoula. “Opening this business six years ago was a dream come true, and I’ve come through 35 years in the funeral industry to get here.”

Although already working as a cosmetologist in 1990, Lisa took a temporary job at a funeral home to help pay closing

costs on a house she and husband, Harry, were buying. “I started as an administrator when Funeral Directors were older gentleman who initially met with the family. From there, the folder was placed on my desk, and I handled everything except for directing the actual service. Working with families to plan services that truly reflected their loved one, I learned how much it meant to help them through the most difficult times of their lives. I knew doing the detailed work to create the most meaningful memorial possible was what I was meant to do.”

While many entrepreneurs seek quantity of customers, Lisa’s goal was to focus on quality interactions. “I wanted to serve my families my way. The volume at the

larger funeral facilities made it harder to deliver the personal attention I felt necessary. In a smaller community, I can have a real relationship with every family that walks through the door.”

By 2002, Lisa had become both a licensed funeral director and insurance agent. She and Harry also had teenage children and were considering moving to Ponchatoula to be closer to her parents. When Hurricane Katrina hit, that timeline was escalated. “We loved this area and saw moving as an opportunity to be one step closer to fulfilling my dream.” Dedicated to bettering herself, Lisa undertook extensive education to earn successive certifications in funeral service including Certified Preplanning Consultant,

Lisa N. Hughes

CELEBRATING LIFE

Certified Funeral Service Practitioner and Certified Cremation Service Practitioner.

Serendipitously, Lisa’s early education and experience dovetailed to create a skill set that, combined with her innate calling to serve, has grown a community of families that seek her help in difficult times. “My

cosmetology experience is handy as I’ve always done hair, makeup and corrective procedures for services. My degree in computer science helps when handling legal and medical paperwork and taking care of service details and my business. And as an insurance agent, I provide pre-arrangements to families, which helps reduce the emotional burden on loved ones who would otherwise need to organize a service while grieving. I love that I’m always meeting with new people along with serving returning families.”

Lisa says the clients who have followed her from different funeral homes throughout her career are a testament to what she and Harry provide. Harry was instrumental in renovating the church that now houses

LN Hughes Funeral Home and works full time now transporting decedents and more. “The phone can ring at any time. We get up, go together and bring the loved one into our care. Harry also does grave preparation as many cemeteries here are rural and family owned.” The dozens of heartfelt testimonials praising Lisa and Harry’s extraordinary attention and dedication reflect the loyalty, gratitude and relief of those who are now part of the Hughes’

extended family. And as matriarchs do, Lisa has created a tradition that brings family back at a very emotional time of year. The Hughes’ Annual Christmas Memorial and Candle Lighting Service features a tree with lights, ribbons, and ornaments for guests to leave their personal messages of remembrance along with music, a tribute video and most importantly, a place to heal with those who understand. “I don’t want anyone to feel forgotten over the holiday. It’s a difficult season for folks, and we want them to know their loved ones are remembered and honored.”

While Lisa and Harry go over and above to serve others, a favorite way to strengthen their relationship is through another shared passion – riding Harley Davidson

motorcycles. “Harry always loved it, and I became his passenger in 2000. In 2016, I attended a Harley Riding Academy and bought my first Harley Tri-Glide in 2017. We enjoy taking short day trips when we can get away.”

Even as Lisa shares her story for this article, she is doing for others – specifically, making fried pork chops, baked macaroni and corn for Harry. “He’s been out preparing a grave all day, over eight hours. He’s a perfectionist and so good at what he does. I want to have his favorite meal ready for him when he gets home.”

Whether in her own home or in the funeral home, there is no hiding that Lisa’s calling is to care for others by celebrating life. When asked where she sees herself in ten years, she is quick to answer. “I’ll be right here. Our mission has consistently been to provide care for families from all walks of life as if they were our own. We are passionately committed to making a difficult time easier for the families we have the honor of serving.”

NTCC celebrates first-ever Associate of Science in Nursing Graduates

Eighteen students recently made history as the first-ever registered nurses to complete Northshore Technical Community College’s (NTCC) Associate of Science in Nursing (ASNRN) program. NTCC marked the historic occasion by celebrating the pioneering class members during a pinning ceremony at Fleur de Lis Event Center in Mandeville.

The ASN-RN program, launched in response to Louisiana’s statewide nursing shortage, prepares students for licensure as registered

nurses through rigorous academic instruction and hands-on clinical training. Since welcoming its first class, the program has expanded to support four active cohorts and continues to grow to meet workforce demands.

Class President Melissa Brooks, who received the Highest Academic Achievement Award and The Michelle Reed Excellence in Nursing Award, said, "I am honored to be one of the first RN graduates of NTCC. The program prepared me well for NCLEX, and for my job. I highly

recommend this program!"

“Our first ASN-RN graduates represent the future of nursing on the Northshore—and we could not be prouder. These 18 women have shown resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to patient care,” said Dr. Jim Carlson, NTCC Chancellor. “This is more than a graduation—it’s the beginning of a legacy at NTCC.”

He added that he would be remiss if he did not recognize our exceptional RN nursing faculty,

whose experience, encouragement, and tireless work built the foundation for the class’s success.

Suntrecia "Sunny" Clark, who received the class’s Heart of Nursing Award, agreed that the faculty were incredible.

“Nursing school was undeniably tough, especially as an older student juggling multiple responsibilities. Balancing work, family, and coursework felt overwhelming at times, but I knew the sacrifices were necessary to achieve my goal,” she said. “The program itself was incredible. It was challenging but so well-organized and supportive. The instructors were not only knowledgeable but also genuinely invested in our success, pushing us to think critically and giving us the skills we needed to be competent and compassionate nurses.

She added that every late night, every weekend she spent studying instead of relaxing, and the constant pressure to excel was all of it was part of the process. “Looking back, it was a journey that was difficult but absolutely worth it,” she said.

She was happy to share that just seven days after graduating, she passed the National Council of Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for nursing on

her first try and credits the NTCC program for having her abundantly prepared to succeed.

“The program’s preparation for the NCLEX was intense, but I knew I had to give it my all,” Clark said. “Passing the exam on my first try was not just a personal achievement; it

was a testament to the sacrifices I made, the quality of the program, and the hard work that paid off.”

Christi Marceaux, NTCC’s dean of Health Sciences and Nursing called the pinning ceremony more than a celebration of academic achievement. She said it marked the culmination of growth, perseverance, and unwavering commitment on behalf of NTCC and the students.

“This is a promise to our region,” she said speaking of NTCC’s commitment to the Northshore. "As the first ASN-RN program solely based on the Northshore, we are investing in developing our own nurses, right here at home.”

NTCC is also expanding its health sciences footprint. The college recently received approval for a new Patient Navigator program and was awarded an H.E.R.O. Grant of nearly $500,000 to launch a Surgical Technology program.

The college’s leaders proudly congratulate the inaugural ASN-RN Class of May 2025 and look forward to the impact these new nurses will make in healthcare settings throughout southeast Louisiana.

Finding Wholesome in Folsom

Finding a “best of both worlds” location is often elusive when searching for the perfect family homesite, but one Northshore couple recently found just the right place to create a wholesome balance for their children. “We were living in a sought-after, gated community in West St. Tammany,” says the outdoorsy wife and mother of three, “but when I looked around, all I saw was kids on cell phones and golf carts. We wanted our children

to grow up the way we did – outdoors, immersed in nature, having active adventures. My husband is an avid hunter and fisherman from Monroe, so he was all in when we found our 100-acre paradise. The best part was that it was only twelve or fifteen minutes from the kids’ school in Covington. With the light traffic on Highway 25, I’m home from dropping them off before the other moms get back to our old neighborhood.”

While the lush acreage in South Folsom did not supply a ready-made home, it did give an almost blank canvas on which the couple could design a home with features that served their back-to-nature lifestyle. “The property had some outbuildings and a 600 square foot farmhouse – if you want to call it that. It was really just a place to get out of the rain with a roof and some walls. We completely gutted it, added seven or eight hundred square feet and made it our

own with upscale amenities and no wasted space. We also added a four-and-a-half-acre pond for fishing, kayaking, and paddle boating. Of course, my husband has a designated deer hunting area and made a walking trail to get back there. We have freezers for the deer meat in the shed; the barn houses farm equipment, and bee supplies; and it’s not a chicken coop – we have a chicken palace. If I had to look at it every day, I made sure it was built to be pretty. And then there’s the front porch. We love sitting out on rocking chairs watching storms come in or admiring a clear, starry sky as the chickens join us and conveniently eat all the bugs. It really is magical.”

For the main house interior, the couple created a form-follows-function design in the spirit of mindful space utilization. “We made it super functional with a focus on the living area, kitchen and a huge pantry – which I think is bigger than my bedroom. The oversized kitchen island and 48-inch range is where all the offerings of the property come together at mealtimes. I’d describe the architecture as farmhouse style, but it’s also upscale. There are stylish custom cabinets, hardwood floors throughout, subway tile, Cristallo quartzite countertops, and a six-foot soaker tub in the bathroom with marble shower floors and White Rhino marble countertops. We also wanted a cozy, comfortable feel so there’s shiplap in the living room with reclaimed wood from the barn on the ceiling. The kids’ bedrooms maximize the space using built-in bunk beds with storage underneath, but they’re always outside or in the kitchen helping. That’s how we planned it – we didn’t want them holed up in a bedroom with electronics 4,000 square feet away. We have everything we need without too much extra. Most importantly, there’s no wasted space.”

When not in the kitchen, the kids explore their wooded wonderland and, among other adventures, help stock the pantry. “The kids were in heaven from the start - catching bugs, scouting the wild turkey and deer. They call our chickens ‘the girls’ and appreciate that our Great Pyrenes

protects them so the family can gather fresh eggs. The bee hives are pure joy for us too, and the kids love suiting up to help harvest the honey. Helping Dad fish and playing in the pond and the mud is one of their favorites, and maybe the best thing we ever did was build an outside shower so they can rinse off before they come inside.”

When playtime is over and it is time for school, it is a short ride, but Folsom has plenty to offer after Mom drops off the kids. “I can easily run errands in Covington, but Folsom has a market with all the essentials five minutes away. It feels more rural than it is because I cannot see or hear my neighbors, but there is a great sense of community here, so I actually make it a point to get together with them for coffee or lunch at Giddy Up. The owner is always there fueling the smalltown charm and camaraderie with good food, music and atmosphere that welcomes folks from all walks of life. It is also close enough that we are able to entertain all the time. The kids’ friends love coming over because it’s such a different experience. When we host class parties, they play old games like kick the can and do all sorts of things out here that they don’t do at home - like bonfires by the pond with s’mores. We watch them light up the land playing laser tag at night and know we’re giving them safe, valuable experiences they wouldn’t otherwise get. They learn so much out here. By allowing them to explore, they use their imagination and develop independence, problem solving and confidence. We’re sad to have to leave what we’ve built here, but my husband’s job requires a move. The good news is, we know it won’t be long before we’ll have the freedom to recreate another lifestyle experience like this to get back to nature and appreciate everything it has to offer.”

Miss SLU Eva Delatte living her DREAM

In addition to her Miss Southeastern crown, Eva Delatte wears quite a few hats. Since becoming Southeastern Louisiana University’s 85th Miss Southeastern titleholder, she has assumed roles as an official ambassador for the College of Education’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Certification program and as a social media advocate for reintroducing the performing arts into the Tangipahoa Parish School System.

“The IB program opened my eyes to what I’m capable of,” says the Hammond High Magnet School graduate. “It’s my hope that more future teachers will be encouraged to earn their IB Certification if I’m able to tell them about it and share how much it impacted me.”

The 21-year-old secondary English education major is also working to assist SLU’s recruitment efforts by speaking with prospective students across the parish. Her goal is to speak at all seven of the parish’s high schools in the upcoming year. A Ponchatoula native, Delatte began her postsecondary education at LSU, but soon realized she belonged at Southeastern instead with its exceptional educational rigor and faculty who truly want their students to succeed.

“Growing up down the road from Southeastern, you don’t always realize what an excellent university is right in your own backyard,” says the transfer student who has since claimed Southeastern as her home. “From the moment I stepped foot on campus, I was welcomed with open arms. I want other students to know that same awesome experience is available to them at SLU.”

Since being crowned in January, Delatte has attended over 50 speaking engagements and public appearances, her favorite being when she was asked to read to young students. She’s also launched the DREAM Initiative, which she presented as her community service initiative project for the Miss Louisiana Scholarship Competition in June. So far she has met with State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley and former First Lady of Louisiana and former Tangipahoa Parish teacher Donna Edwards to discuss her passion project.

“DREAM stands for Dance, Rhythm, Expression, Acting, and Music,” she says. “I’m advocating for the performing arts to be brought back into public schools because every child deserves access to opportunities to express themselves creatively and grow through the arts.”

dance and ballroom dancing in New York City, it’s no surprise that she also won the Talent Competition during the Miss SLU pageant.

“The arts are part of my upbringing through the IB program. It’s such a valuable mindset,” she says. “Not only do I know this personally, having completed the program, but I’ve done my research, too. Children benefit from having creative outlets for their emotions. The performing arts increase social skills and inspire the confidence that is missing greatly from the younger generations.”

She added that having attended high school during the Covid-19 pandemic, she knows what it’s like to lose access to the arts. Public schools have seen a decrease in the number of high school students who want to participate in band, she says.

“By adding music back into schools at the elementary level, we’ll hopefully instill a love of music that will lead to greater band membership when they get to junior high and high school,” she says.

She’s been asked to speak at this summer’s IB Global Conference about her experience with IB and her role as an ambassador of the teacher certification program at Southeastern. She’s eager to share her story with the over 1,500 educators in attendance, and hopefully inspire other colleges to enlist the help of advocates like herself.

Of course, she was proud to take the stage to represent Southeastern at the Miss Louisiana pageant in Monroe this summer. Affiliated with the Miss America Scholarship Competition, Delatte says she respects and appreciates what the organization refers to as “The Four Points of the Crown.” While the first two, Scholarship and Service, are fairly self-explanatory, she

says that Style and Success are equally important.

“Style isn’t about wearing a pretty dress. It’s about knowing how to present yourself when you walk into a board room or interview,” she says.

As for the final point, she defines Success as knowing that she is having a positive impact on people’s lives by interacting and engaging with them on topics that she holds dearly – education and the arts.

Other than continuing to wear a multitude of hats, what does the young woman who refuses to put herself into a box have planned for the future? She’s considering becoming a global educator for a few years to see the world before returning to earn her master’s and doctoral degrees at what she unabashedly proclaims the most sophisticated college of education in Louisiana - SLU.

“Because, if your dreams don’t scare you a bit, you’re not dreaming big enough, right?” she asks with a smile.

Wigs by Tiffani™

Nhat-Thuy "Tiffani" Tran Calix never expected that losing her hair after having her third child would become the catalyst for building a global business that transforms lives. What began as postpartum hair loss five years ago has evolved into Wigs By Tiffani™, a thriving enterprise that serves women and children worldwide who experience medical-related hair loss.

Drawing from her 14 years as a licensed hairstylist and 11 years as a salon owner, Tiffani initially started making wigs in her kitchen after struggling to find pieces that looked natural and suited her personal style. Working long days at the salon, then coming home to craft wigs every night until 2-3AM, her dedication has paid off— what started as a one-woman operation has grown into a 14-person team operating from a stunning 3,500-square-foot studio in Metairie, Louisiana.

Tiffani's approach is deeply personal. Half of her team members wear wigs themselves due to medical-related hair loss, creating an environment of genuine empathy and understanding. Her wigs are renowned for their incredible realism and undetectable hairlines, attracting not only those experiencing hair loss but also celebrities, influencers, and anyone wanting to experiment or expand their style. This broad appeal has earned recognition from celebrities like Jennifer Garner and Viola Davis, and features in Forbes, Fox News, and People magazine.

The heart of Tiffani's mission lies with her youngest clients. Senja Drudge

Skyline Imagery & The Raw Collective Podcast, Owner • Photographer

Makeup Artist • Wife • Mom Fashionista • Podcaster

Meet Senja Drudge — curator of life’s rawest, most radiant moments and the woman behind Skyline Imagery. She’s a wife to her best friend, mom to her sweet Skylar, and proud queen of three fur babies who keep the house loud, messy, and brimming with love. Between little girl giggles and barking squabbles over the one toy no one wants to share; her world is a beautiful storm of chaos and magic. Photography didn’t just appear in Senja’s life — it called her home. What started as a quiet curiosity grew into a calling stitched deep into her soul, whispered by God, and illuminated by grace. When she first picked up the camera, she felt small, standing in the long shadows of talented artists. But she learned fast: comparison is a thief. Her gift was never to outshine — it was to see what others miss. Senja isn’t here to make things look perfect. She’s here to catch them as they truly are raw, honest, breathtakingly ordinary, and divinely extraordinary in the same frame. It’s the secret glance between newlyweds when the world falls away. The way a father laces his fingers through his daughter’s hand when no one’s looking. The sigh right before “I do.” It’s the moments between the poses that say so much more than words. That’s her signature — soulful candids draped in natural light and wrapped in truth. Her lens is more than glass; it’s a mirror that reflects you back to yourself — your story, your legacy, your proof that you were here, and you were so very loved. If you ask Senja what success looks like, she’ll tell you it’s not the fancy shoots or the praise — it’s the trust you place in her to hold your memories gently, to bottle up time so you can come back to it, again and again. So, here’s to the wild messes, the whispered prayers, the sacred stillness of ordinary days made extraordinary. “Let’s make memories you’ll never want to forget.”

Kelly Cox Vicari Non-Profit Founder, Healing

with Horses Louisiana

Meet Kelly, a woman whose life is guided by faith, compassion, and a deep connection to the healing power of horses. As the visionary behind this empowered 501(c)(3) Nonprofit, Kelly has turned personal pain into purpose, offering emotional, physical, and mental support to those in need of healing through Alternative Equine Therapy.

Kelly’s journey toward this life-changing mission began in the most personal way, caring for her beloved mother during her battle with Alzheimer’s. Amid this challenging journey, Kelly turned to her horses for comfort for both herself and her mother. Their intuitive presence helped her navigate the emotional toll of caregiving and were miraculous in calming her mother. Through this intimate experience, she witnessed firsthand the profound healing connection between humans and horses—a connection that inspired her calling.

After her mother passed away, Kelly was moved by prayer and determination to take a leap of faith. With over five decades of experience as an Equine Specialist, a degree in Broadcast Journalism, and a creative eye as a Photographer, she poured her heart into founding, Healing with Horses Louisiana. Her mission was clear, to serve those hurting emotionally, mentally, and physically by offering them the hope and healing that horses so uniquely provide through their natural intuition.

Located in the heart of Louisiana, on 20 incredibly peaceful acres in Folsom, the nonprofit is more than a sanctuary—it is a ministry. Kelly’s faith is the cornerstone of every session, every client interaction, and every life touched by her horses.

As a Christ-centered and devoted mother of five, she has balanced the demands of family life with an unshakable commitment to giving back to her community.

At the core of Kelly’s life is a simple, but powerful principle, to be a vessel of God’s love and healing. “As an instrument of God, I am truly blessed to do what I love in life,” she says. For Kelly, the true “Win” is not measured in accolades or recognition, but in the moments of breakthrough, peace, and joy she witnesses in those she serves.

Whether helping a child overcome trauma, a veteran cope with PTSD, increase hope in cancer survivors, or a caregiver find solace in a safe space, Kelly shows up with gratitude, humility, and an open heart. Healing with Horses Louisiana is a direct reflection of her spirit—gentle yet strong, driven by faith, and deeply rooted in love.

Kelly Cox Vicari continues to live her passion every day. Her story is one of grace, grit, and generosity—a reminder that even in our darkest moments, healing is possible when we follow the call placed on our hearts.

How Two Rural Louisiana Shelters Are Giving Animals—and Communities—a Fighting Chance From Surviving to Thriving

I recently met two huge-hearted humans. Brian “Chip” Fitzsimmons, Director at Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter, and Hayli Beebe, Program Coordinator at St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter. It is hard to describe the quiet joy of hearing people speak from the center of their calling. But, it was heart-warming and inspiring to hear both of the passion and dedication of these two individuals.

As I spoke with Hayli, at St. Tammany, I noticed she does not raise her voice. It is because what she carries is greater than volume. It is conviction. Every life that exits those doors alive is a win. That is the metric. That is the mission. And every win has a name. For example, “Eeyore,” she told me, “was a German Shepherd–Malinois puppy who came in at just two weeks old. He had been bottle-fed, fostered, and returned. He was the last of his litter, and we had to put him on the Mayday list. You could see some of the Malinois traits coming out in him,” Hayli said. “A little more mouthy. A little bit more of that bite inhibition stuff. Just a little higher energy.” Then a call came. Canine Academy stepped in. They had a home for him. “Now he’s got land to run on and a family that loves him.”

It’s not rare, but, some days “you take a dog out,” Hayli told me, “and they think they’re going for a walk. They’re so excited, And then they realize they’re just going to get their picture taken — and you see it. You see their face change”

The ache behind her voice was tangible, even over the phone. But, Hayli is not sentimental. She just tells the truth. These programs work: foster, adoption, transport, return-to-home. Each one lifts the pressure off intake. Each one saves time, saves space, saves lives.

“The Return to Home program gives us a huge chance,” she said. “That way, animals don’t even have to come into the shelter. People post flyers in the neighborhood, and we help them. It changes everything.”

Hayli and the team at St. Tammany Animal Shelter, have built outside relationships with rescue groups in Wisconsin, Colorado, Delaware, too. When they can’t place an animal here, they try to move them where they have a chance. She said they are grateful for every single van that shows up for a pickup.

And the local piece matters just as much. “People don’t realize they can help,” she said. “Even just sponsoring an adoption fee or food

for a foster family makes a difference.”

She described a woman who walked into the shelter with a mama dog and a litter of puppies. There was no drama or demands, just someone doing the right thing, which is a win for everyone. Then there was the foster family who took home a bottle baby. Those are the fragile ones. They are just days old with no mother and completely dependent. “They saved that pup’s life,” Hayli said. Simple as that.

What keeps her going? “Watching the updates. Seeing the before and after,” she said. How some dogs shut down under the stress. How they’re the tough ones to find homes for. Hayli added with a hopeful, happy tone, “You get them into a foster home — and a week later, they’re a completely different dog.”

When I asked if they needed more help at the shelter, Hayli laughed gently-“Always.”

From St. Tammany, We Go West to Tangipahoa Where Transformation Moves You to Your Soul

When I sat down with Chip Fitzsimmons, Director of the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter, I was moved to tears. Maybe it was when he told me they had finally reached three straight

months of no-kill numbers. Maybe it was the moment he spoke about the gratitude in the eyes of a dog who knew it had been saved. Maybe it was because I heard how their stories begin.

Sixteen years ago, this shelter had an intake count of over 8,000 animals a year—without a veterinarian clinic and no relief in sight.

Now they’re holding steady at just over 5,000 intakes. They have performed more than 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries in recent years. Their improved facilities include a clinic, expanded kennels, and lifesaving partnerships from across the U.S. with Wings of Rescue, Brandywine Valley SPCA, Best Friends, and more. With the aid of these partners, their no-kill benchmark was achieved. The shelter no longer seems overwhelmed. It hums with purpose.

During our interview, two staff members stepped into the room, one cradling a pair of wide-eyed puppies, and the other holding two tiny kittens nestled in a towel.

“They are adorable,” I cried!

Chip smiled. There was quiet satisfaction in his smile. It was the joy that comes from doing this work day in and day out.

The shelter is full of life and rings with meaning and purpose. There is still need,

How You Can Help

At St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter (Lacombe)

Visit and volunteer: Sit with the dogs. Pet the cats. Help with photos. Just showing up matters.

Foster for a weekend, a week, or more. Even short-term fostering saves lives.

Sponsor an adoption fee or spay/neuter surgery.

Donate: pet food, laundry detergent, leashes, toys, and treats.

Share adoptables on social media. Visibility saves lives.

Cover the cost of a surgery or adoption fee.

Donate food, bleach, towels, or funds to stretch their limited budget.

Share adoptables and updates to help find homes.

animalshelter@tangipahoa.org

and there is hope. Reaching this no-kill benchmark for three months straight is the start of a dream being realized. So, what has changed? The support, the programs, and the people stepping in at every level. “We cannot do it without the community,” adding, “We have gotten so much help—Brandywine, Best Friends, Wings of Rescue, Petco, ASPCA. But it is local support that sustains this work.”

I asked what they still need most. “Foster homes. Sponsorships. People who care enough to show up—not just once, but often.”

This is about what a small parish shelter can become when a community decides it matters; when neighbors step up; and when people stop asking, “Why hasn’t someone done something?” and start saying, “I can do something.”

If you have ever wondered what difference you could make, Chip, Hayli and their teams have an answer for you. Start with one visit, one share, one donation, or one walk. Just start with one “yes.”

Because every happy ending at these shelters begins with one “yes.” The next question is, will that next “yes” be yours?

Hi there. I’m Mooney.

A Day in the Life of Chief Mooney

As told by Mooney the Firehouse

Dog

HEYNS

Technically, I’m a golden retriever. But around here, they call me Chief. Chief Mooney. I take that seriously.

My job? I help take care of the humans who take care of everyone else.

Each morning, I clock in with my handler, Tim. I know when I’m on duty—my vest goes on, my tail gets serious, and I start making my rounds. Sometimes it’s a visit to the Academy, sometimes a tough debriefing. Wherever I go, I’m scanning the room for something no one else can see: stress, sadness, signals that someone’s carrying too much.

I’ve learned where to sit. Sometimes it’s just close enough. Sometimes I nudge a hand that’s hanging over the side of a chair, or I lay my head right on someone’s knee. Other times, I

just sit quietly where they can reach me, and wait. They almost always reach.

I’m not a pet. I’m a partner. And I’m here for them.

After work, I’m off duty—literally. I take my vest off, and I go home to play fetch, chase kids, and nap under desks. But when that gear goes back on, I’m on the job. And I don’t miss.

They say I’ve made a difference. They say the room feels different when I walk in. But I think what I really do is help them remember they’re human, too. And it’s okay to feel that.

Heidi’s Note: On Meeting Chief Mooney

The first time I saw Mooney, I said hello before I even knew I had. His face—big and blocky, golden and sure—fills the room. He’s not flashy. He’s present. The kind of presence

WITH HELP FROM HEIDI

that makes people soften. Not with permission, but with relief.

He doesn’t beg for attention, but he’s always right there. Within reach. Within reason. Within comfort.

I watched him work that room like he’d been born for it. Laying his head on someone’s knee during a hard debrief. Slipping his nose into the palm of someone who didn’t even know they needed it until he showed up. Sitting just close enough to remind someone: “You’re not alone.”

There’s something sacred in that.

This dog doesn’t just change days. He changes people.

Emotional Support on Four Legs

The Firehouse Dog Program started with one goal: to rebuild a parish-wide peer

support system for firefighters, dispatchers, and first responders. Chief Mooney was added as an emotional support dog trained specifically to detect stress and provide comfort—not just during major incidents, but every day.

Mooney accompanies firefighters to classes, joins them for meals, participates in stressful testing situations, and plays a key role in debriefings after traumatic calls. His ability to quietly connect with those most affected—without needing to be told—has already made a visible impact.

He also visits neighboring departments and local dispatch teams, helping to create a culture where emotional support isn’t an afterthought. It’s a resource. And he’s the one who carries it.

How You Can Support Mooney’s Mission

In his honor. For the next one like him.

Skip the Tre ats—He lp the She lte rs

Mooney is well supplied with toys, beds, and even belly rubs. If you’d like to help, the firehouse asks that you donate to your local no-kill animal shelter in Mooney’s name. Shelters are always in need of food, supplies, or fosters.

Foste ra Future Moone y

Service dogs like Mooney start with loving foster families before advanced training. Reach out to organizations like Thin Line Service Dogs to ask how to support their early training needs. Sup

Talk to your city council, fire chief, or police department. Ask how your community is addressing first responder mental health—and how emotional support dogs could help. Fundraisers, grants, and donations can all make these programs possible.

Say Thank You—Out Loud

Every firefighter in Mooney’s department said the same thing: they feel backed by their community. So keep saying it. Every time you see one. It matters.

Social Media and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is such a beautiful—and sometimes overwhelming—time. To protect your mental health, start by trusting your instincts and giving yourself permission to filter input. Whether it's from social media or even well-meaning friends and family, you don’t have to internalize unsolicited advice. Try using gentle but firm phrases like, “Thanks, I’ve got it covered,” or “I’m following my care team’s plan” to set boundaries . It really helps to curate your feed—unfollow or mute accounts that spark anxiety or comparison. And schedule screen breaks: limit checks to preferred times so your mind can rest.

Surround yourself with people who listen without lecturing, and share how you're really feeling. You might say, “I just need a little reassurance today”—not another opinion. Pair this with nurturing habits—prenatal yoga, walks, quiet moments—and you'll build a calmer, more centered pregnancy experience that’s all you.

North Oaks Health System has partnered with Southeastern Louisiana University as a sponsor of a comprehensive project that will bolster both academics and athletics on campus with creation of the North Oaks Health System Academic and Athletic Complex. The project encompasses both major renovations and expansion of the current Sports Medicine, academic and athletic facilities at the university’s Dugas Center, as well as enhancement of the academic program that produce realworld-ready Sports Medicine graduates.

The scope of the sponsorship agreement

includes complete renovation of the existing 27,890 square-foot, two-story Dugas Center, as well as the construction of a new 25,250 square-foot, two-story addition, located at the south end zone of Strawberry Stadium.

“This is more than the start of a new building; it’s a testament to the power of collaboration,” shared Michele K. Sutton, FACHE, President and CEO of North Oaks Health System. “For over six decades, North Oaks and Southeastern have shared a deep, symbiotic relationship rooted in a shared mission to improve lives. Together, we are not just building structures, we are building

opportunities, careers and a healthier tomorrow.”

She added that the new facility represents North Oaks Health System’s continued commitment to advancing healthcare education, supporting the community and investing in the future of the Northshore region.

Southeastern President William S. Wainwright echoed Sutton’s sentiment.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with our long-term partners at North Oaks to further enhance our Sports Medicine program,” he said. “The project focuses on creating a versatile environment that supports both academic

development and athletic performance.”

With the firm of Gasaway, Gasaway, and Bankston handling architectural design and Voelkel McWilliams as contractor, the renovated Dugas Center will provide upgraded administrative offices, a state-of-the art treatment room, modern classrooms for the university’s growing

Masters in Athletic Training program, a student commons area, and an amphitheater designed for academic engagement, presentations and team meetings. The exterior of the building will also receive an update and will tie into the new addition to create an entire athletic complex.

The new entry plaza facing Galloway Drive will feature “Lion Up” sculptural letters, an illuminated entry portal, and sweeping stairs welcoming all visitors to the new complex. Guests will be greeted by first entering “The Forum,” a covered bridge and stair system connecting the existing and new structures. This entry area is designed to provide not only circulation but also outdoor gathering and study areas that encourage collaboration and community engagement. The overall design reflects the university’s commitment to providing student athletes with premier facilities that foster academic success and athletic performance.

The Spirit of Louisiana Katrina 20th Anniversary Commemoration

Nearly 20 years ago, Hurricane Katrina roared through the City of Slidell, bringing with it a 20-foot storm surge and sustained winds in excess of 160 mph, leaving 40 percent of the city underwater. That event became the definitive marker between two eras, those of preand post-K Slidell. There are those who have experienced its many transformative changes. And there are the fortunate whose knowledge of such is limited because they were not yet born or they moved into the community in the post-K aftermath or beyond. Though many who experienced the wrath of Katrina would rather forget the hurricane, the upcoming two-decade milestone provides an opportunity to mark the resilience, recovery, and, ultimately, rebirth of the city.

Commemorative events will begin on Friday, August 29, in the George Dunbar Gallery in the Slidell Cultural Center at City Hall. The “Katrina: Then and Now” community art exhibition will feature haunting portraits capturing the devastation (then) and images of a city reborn (now,) plus artifacts and contributions from members of the community and those who were part of the recovery efforts. This

event is presented by the Northshore Cultural Economy Coalition and hosted by the City of Slidell, with details and exhibition hours featured on the NorthshoreCEC.org website. Admission is free.

On Saturday, August 30, the community will gather in the Slidell Municipal Auditorium to recognize just how far the city has come since those dark days in which everything seemed insurmountable. The first of three events will begin at 4 pm, with a welcome from Mayor Bill Borchert and a host of dignitaries who played key roles in the recovery efforts.

At 5 pm, the doors will be closed on Katrina past with a look toward the city’s future. The Spirit of Louisiana Second Line will proceed from the auditorium and City Hall, around the Municipal Square block and back to the auditorium. The Second Line will honor the multitude of groups and individuals who were part of the recovery efforts including government employees, law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS and medical personnel, utility linemen, waste management service providers, civic and faith-base organizations, the hospitality industry and the media whose tireless

efforts kept citizens informed through the most challenging of times.

The Spirit of Louisiana Second Line procession will be led by the Storyville Stompers, beloved fixtures of the annual Jazz on the Bayou fundraiser hosted by Ronnie and Gardner Kole. Fun fact: Mr. Kole was the final entertainer to perform in the original Slidell Municipal Auditorium, and the first to perform in the newly-built Slidell Municipal Auditorium during its ribbon cutting ceremony. The brass band’s performance serves as a tribute to the Koles and their lasting impact on the community.

It seems only fitting that the musicians who restored our city’s heartbeat with the first post-Katrina Bayou Jam concert return to complete the circle and close out the Katrina 20th commemorative events. At 6 pm, the Bucktown All-Stars will take the stage in the auditorium for an evening concert, with special guest Vince Vance kicking off the entertainment with a heartwarming tribute song. The concert will be open to the public, with free tickets available online to help ensure seating in advance.

A Taste of OZONE's Songwriter Festival Fare

The Ozone Music Foundation recently hosted an inspiring and lively evening of original music at the Slidell Little Theatre, an event that showcased some of the area's most talented and promising songwriters. The night was both a celebration of local musical talent and a mid-year fundraiser dedicated to supporting the Foundation’s ongoing programs, mentorships, resources, and opportunities for aspiring songwriters.

The evening was expertly hosted and headlined by Greg Barnhill, a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, producer, and President of the Ozone Music Foundation. Barnhill’s presence underscored the event’s significance, bringing a touch of national recognition and expertise to the local stage. Performing alongside Barnhill were several acclaimed and emerging singer-songwriters, each with compelling stories and unique musical styles.

Hannah Belle, a singer-songwriter known for blending 90s country with Americana influences, brought a heartfelt energy to the stage. Originally from Mississippi and now residing in Ponchatoula, Belle’s musical journey began at the age of three, performing in her family’s Baptist church where her father was a preacher. Her early days were filled with singing and a cherished red tambourine, symbols of her childhood musical roots. Belle’s dedication paid off when she placed second in the 2024 Ozone Songwriter Festival. This achievement opened many doors for her, giving her increased performance opportunities, greater community visibility, and a boost in her credibility within the songwriting community. She shared that her role as the “Face of Ozone” this year has facilitated networking, co-writing, and a deeper sense of belonging in the local music community.

Caroline Tebbs, another talented artist featured at the event, has been involved with the Ozone Foundation for many years. Her hard work earned her a music scholarship to Lipscomb University in Nashville, a city renowned for its vibrant music scene. Tebbs’s musical influences include pop and pop-country artists like Taylor Swift and Kelsey Ballareni. Her songwriting became more focused and purposeful as she matured, driven by her passion for storytelling through music. With the Foundation’s support, she performed at numerous festivals, contests, and showcases in Nashville, gaining recognition as a rising star.

A heartwarming story unfolded between Stephen and Madison McDonald, who met at the 2023 Ozone Songwriter Festival. Their shared experience grew into a deep connection, culminating in their marriage—a true fairy tale of love and music intertwined.

Laine Bleu, another notable performer, has been singing and performing since her early teens. At just 18, she has established herself as a seasoned studio artist, streaming her songs online and appearing on local television programs like WWL-TV morning shows and the St. Tammany Lifestyles segment. Her future looks bright, with more performances and exposure expected.

Throughout the evening, patrons enjoyed food and drinks while celebrating the rich talent of these songwriters. The event not only highlighted individual achievements but also reinforced the Foundation’s mission of nurturing young talent, fostering community connections, and advancing careers in music.

This night demonstrated the power of community, mentorship, and passion for songwriting—an inspiring snapshot of the vibrant local music scene and the promising futures of its talented artists.
