Blackened Brew ON FEB 5TH, 2016 Blackened Brew opened
their doors at 5pm–just two hours after the last ceiling panel was put up. Owner Anthony Donze had worked for eight years saving money to invest in a restaurant. Says Donze, “Hammond didn’t have a gastropub restaurant, and I felt with the resurgence of downtown, that type of offering would be a good fit.” Although he had doubts about the new venture due to restaurants’ high failure rate and the poor track record of his proposed location, the entrepreneur-at-heart was inspired by a friend. “A hugely successful restaurateur and mentor motivated me to open when I got cold feet. People said the building was cursed, but I was confident that with good management and excellent care for customers, I would succeed.” Donze boasts a taste for great beer that matches his taste for great foods and felt that customers would share that appreciation. “Great burgers have always been a favorite of mine, so we made the decision that gourmet burgers and 100% craft beer would be our thing. Four years later, we’re still here and thriving.” As he looks back in appreciation for his growing popularity, the dedicated proprietor acknowledges those closest to him. “I can’t forget to mention my fiancée and my family. I take after my late grandfather because I love to take care of people and make them happy. My family has supported me from day one, and my fiancée keeps me grounded while in a very tough and demanding industry. She stood by my side while I worked nearly 90 hours a week for almost a year because she knows that for me, there is no better job in the world." Blackened Brew is located at 112 W. THE INSPIRATION FOR the delicious and artfully created food and desserts at Sweet Idea was the owners’ love of pairing their passions. Tia and Kassio Alves have created a unique food experience in Mandeville by bringing together Asian tapas (small plates) and creative desserts. “My husband and I wanted to put something really different out there,” says Tia of their menu. “We did lots of research and even went to California to experience their food scene. We came back with a variety of Japanese, Pho, Korean and Vietnamese savory favorites along with outof-the-ordinary sweet treats like rolled ice cream, bingsu, taiyaki and pandan waffles. Our food is not only delicious but also a way to satisfy my artistic side.” Tia explains just a few of her exotic desserts. “The rolled ice cream is made with fresh cream and mixed with different things like Oreos, bananas foster or pandan, a Vietnamese flavor, and then frozen on a pan that gets down to -18 degrees. The bingsu is made with a special machine imported from Korea. It’s a little like a snowball but three times softer. The base is a dairy or non-dairy cream, paired with fresh fruit and topped with condensed milk. The texture is like light, fluffy snow and it’s delicious.” The menu is extensive with unique weekly specials and Tia stresses that despite the name they offer much more than dessert. “People love our sticky bun baos, bahn mi sandwiches, ramen bowls – they’re too many choices to name but it’s always an adventure in eating.” Sweet Idea is located at 4628 Highway 22 in Mandeville. Laundry Rescue THE TEAM AT Laundry Rescue is honored to be voted Northshore’s Best. We take pride in helping our customers enjoy more quality time by taking some of their stress away and making their lives easier. This month marks our one-year anniversary. We have grown quickly thanks to our wonderful customers. Our top-notch employees take pride in their work and because of them, we are able to get our customers’ laundry cleaned and returned in the same day. We are happy to provide this convenience at no extra cost. We are a commercial and residential laundry service with free delivery that serves Madisonville, Mandeville, Covington and the surrounding areas. We sort, spot clean, wash, dry, and fold or hang clothes. We sort the clean clothes by person and size and carefully pack them into our bags. We also offer steam pressing which allows us to choose the best options for the fabrics being ironed and our steam pressing machine is large enough to handle a king size duvet cover. Our laundering machines are also large enough to wash and dry any size comforter. is your answer to the dilemma that many parents face: where to find quality child care. Since 1999, Kidz Klub House has partnered with families to love, nurture and prepare the whole child for the next step in life–"big" school. The mission of Kidz Klub House is to provide a stimulating, safe, clean environment for your child to learn and grow. An age-appropriate curriculum is utilized to support the academic learning and social/emotional development of our students. Kindergarten preparation with an atmosphere of family partnership and acceptance are an integral part of our program. We believe that the success of our schools depends largely on our early childhood teachers.
