Swiss Aids Care International runs Newlands Clinic and Newlands Clinic Training Centre in Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare. The foundation was set up in 2003 by Prof. Ruedi Lüthy, who heads the clinic together with Matthias Widmaier. His daughter, Sabine Lüthy, has taken over as CEO of the foundation in 2012, thus ensuring that its work will be carried on in keeping with her father’s vision and ideals over the long term. Zimbabwe is one of the poorest countries in Africa, and has at least 1.4 million people who are infected with HIV or have already developed Aids, many of them children. Through Newlands Clinic and its mobile clinics, Swiss Aids Care International treats some 5,500 patients. It also distributes food and provides gynaecological examinations and self-help groups. In addition to this, around 500 local nurses and doctors are trained at the Newlands Training Centre every year, and they then go on to care for HIV and Aids patients across the country.
