Das Hotelmuseum „Belle Epoque“ mit Kristallkluft … Im grössten Hotelmuseum der Schweiz werden Gegenstände aus der hoteleigenen Geschichte präsentiert. Schon im Museumsfoyer treffen Besucher und Besucherinnen auf historisch interessante Zeugen der „Belle Epoque“-Hotelkultur. Möbel und Gebrauchsgegenstände schicken die Gäste auf eine Zeitreise in die glamouröse Zeit der Jahrhundertwende. Schimmernde Schätze findet man in der 1987 eröffneten Kristallkluft – einer Sammlung von Bergkristallen des bekannten Bündner Strahlers Paul Membrini. … und Olgiati Museum Flims Die Synthese von zeitgemässer Architektur und historischem Kulturgut war ein Charakteristikum von Rudolf Olgiatis architektonischem Schaffen. Im Flimser Ortsbild heben sich die wuchtigen und doch vornehm wirkenden, weissen Wohnhäuser von Rudolf Oligati deutlich von der übrigen Architektur ab. Kurz nach seinem Tod im Jahre 1995 wurde im Waldhaus Flims ein Museum zu seinen Ehren eröffnet. Es zeigt in wechselnden Ausstellungen Kulturgüter, die er über Jahrzehnte gesammelt und der Gemeinde Flims vermacht hat. Museums-Dinner Event 1000 Gegenstände aus über 132 Jahren Gastfreundschaft, Fortschritt und Stil: Die im Hotelmuseum inszenierte Sammlung wird auf vielfältige und faszinierende Weise erlebbar gemacht. Furniture and articles from daily life take the guest on a journey into the past to the glamorous days of the turn of the 20th Century. Shimmering treasures can be found in the crystal chasm opened in 1987 – a collection of rock crystal from the renowned Graubünden crystal hunter Paul Membrini. … and the Olgiati Museum Flims The synthesis of contemporary architecture and historic cultural objects was a typical characteristic of Rudolf Olgiati’s architectonic works. In the town of Flims, the striking yet distinguished white apartment buildings by Rudolf Olgiati set his work clearly apart from the rest of the local architecture. Shortly after his death in 1995, Waldhaus Flims opened a museum in his honour. Shown there are changing exhibitions of cultural objects collected by Olgiati over the decades and bequeathed by the community of Flims. Museum Dinner Event 1000 objects from more than 132 years of hospitality, progress and style: the collection presented in the hotel museum comes alive in various and fascinating ways. The Museum Dinner Events is a pleasurable journey back in time and also a journey into the world of fine cuisine and wines. In the 7 exhibition rooms, a 7-course menu is accompanied by 7 wines. Jahrhundert jedenfalls hat mit dem Grand Hotel einen Typus entwickelt, der noch heute Gäste bringt.“ sagt der Schweizer Architekt Max Dudler. „Der weltgewandten Identität der Grand Hotels spüren wir nach – den dieses genuin grossstädtische Weltund Raumgefühl soll sich in unseren kleinen und grossen Entwürfen in einer zeitgenössischen Form realisieren.“ Max Dudler, geboren 1949 in Altenrhein am Bodensee, ist jemand der es wissen sollte. Als junger Mann verliess er die Schweiz in Richtung Berlin, hat sich seiner alten Heimat seit einiger Zeit aber wieder zugewandt: Heute pendelt Dudler zwischen seinen zwei Lebensmittelpunkten Zürich und Berlin, deren komplementäre Energie seine Motivation und sein Lebenselixier ist. Max Dudlers Bauten erklären sich nicht, sie erschliessen sich über ihre spezifische architektonische Sprache. Denn das Selbstverständliche muss nicht ausgesprochen werden. Umso mehr muss es erarbeitet werden: durch Vereinfachung. Doch nichts ist schwieriger als das Einfache, im Weglassen liegt die grösste Arbeit. Wer weglassen will, muss das Ganze kennen. Für das Hotel Schweizerhof in Lenzerheide gestaltete Dudler den Wellnesbereich in ein Hamam um – die Urzelle des orientalischen Urbanismus. Entstanden ist mehr als ein Bad: ein Erfahrungsraum, ein mystischer Ort, der Sinnlichkeit vermittelt und tiefe Ruhe verströmt. Das Zentrum eines jeden Hamams bildet der Nabelstein, eine grosse warme Liegefläche, wo man sich zwischen den einzelnen Durchgängen entspannt. In orientalischen Badehäusern ist dieser Stein der gesellschaftliche Treffpunkt schlechthin. Im Schweizerhof freilich geht es temperierter zu. Man spricht eher gedämpft und der Nabelstein ist aus graubündener Soglio-Granit. Zum Ausklang des Badegangs stehen im Camekan, dem Erholungsraum, bequeme Liegen bereit, wo man sich mit Trockenfrüchten, Nüssen und Tee wieder für die Welt rüstet. „Das Hamam in Lenzerheide steht für mich für den Gedanken, Grossstadt als Lebensgefühl auch im kleinen Massstab spürbar zu machen“ sagt Max Dudler. Dass er den grossen Massstab wie wenige beherrscht bewies er jüngst mit der gerade eröffneten – und mittlerweile mit Preisen überhäuften – Bibliothek der Berliner Humboldt Universität. Mit dem Jakob-und-Wilhelm-Grimm-Zentrum hat Dudler ein Schrein des geschriebenen und gespeicherten Wissens geschaffen, ein Haus für das Buch, dass durch die strenge Ordnung seines aus dem Buch entwickelten Moduls seinen Anlass und Zweck in eine zeitlose Architektur fasst. Durch ihren Willen zur Abstraktion wirkt das Haus von aussen fast wie eine Skulptur aus Stein; Als besonderes Haus der europäischen Stadt nimmt die Bibliothek als öffentlicher, allen gleichermassen zugänglicher Innenraum eine besondere Stellung in der Wahrnehmung und kollektiven Erinnerung der Menschen ein. „Menschen leben Urbanität, Architektur muss dafür den Rahmen bereiten“ sagt Max Dudler.

Swiss Architect Max Dudler Pays Homage to the City Text: Alexander Bonte Does architecture draw guests? “With the grand hotel, the 19th century developed a type of architecture that draws guests even today,” says Swiss Architect Max Dudler. “We trace the urbane identity of the grand hotel – this genuinely metropolitan sense of the world and of space should manifest itself in contemporary form in our small and large designs.” Max Dudler, born in 1949 in Altenrhein on Lake Constance, is someone who should know. As a young man, he abandoned Switzerland for Berlin, but returned to his home some time ago. Today Dudler commutes between the two middle points of his life, Zürich and Berlin, and their complementary energies are his motivation and life blood. Max Dudler‘s buildings don‘t explain themselves; they reveal themselves through their specific architectural language. For the self-explanatory must not be stated. One must therefore work all the harder to acquire it: through simplification. But nothing is harder than simplicity, in omission lies the most work. In order to omit something, one must grasp the whole.

For Hotel Schweizerhof in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, Dudler redesigned a wellness area as a hamam, the wellspring of oriental urbanism. He created more than a bath: an experience, a mystical place that conveys sensuality and radiates deep calm. The center of every hamam is the goebektas, a large warm stone platform where one relaxes between treatments. In oriental bathhouses, this stone is the ultimate social gathering place. In Schweizerhof, things are admittedly more temperate. Conversation is dampened and the goebektas is made of granite from nearby Soglio, Graubünden. At the conclusion of the bath, comfortable places to lounge are available in the camekan, the room for recovery and refreshment, where one can prepare to reenter the world with dried fruits, nuts and tea. “For me, the hamam in Lenzerheide stands for the idea of allowing people to experience the big city as an attitude – even on a small scale” says Max Dudler. He has proved that he also has the rare ability to do this on a large scale with the recently opened – and multiple award winning – library at Humboldt University, Berlin. With the Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Center, Dudler has erected a shrine to written and preserved knowledge, a house for the book. Through its strictly ordered design – modeled on the book itself – the library‘s purpose is embodied in a timeless piece of architecture. The structure‘s tendency toward the abstract makes the building seem almost like a stone sculpture from the outside. The library is a special building within the European city; as a public space equally accessible to everyone, it holds a special place in the perception and collective memory of people. “People live urbanism; architecture must prepare the framework,” says Max Dudler.

Neben den Klassikern «Seduzione», «Passione» und «Sforzato» enthält ihr Weinportfolio den Topwein «Numero 1» sowie die limitierte Rarität «24K». Alles Weine, die die Güte und die unterschiedlichen Gesichter der Nebbiolo-Traube zelebrieren.
Die Besitzer von Plozza sind Schweizer, ein Teil des Betriebes inklusive Abfüllanlage steht auf Schweizer Boden in Poschiavo, aber die Reben wachsen in Tirano, unmittelbar nach der Schweizer Grenze in Italien. Auch befindet sich die ganze Press- und Produktionsanlage in Tirano. Im Jahr 1919 folgte der 29-jährige Pietro Plozza, ein Angestellter der Rhätischen Bahn seiner Berufung und wurde Weinhändler. Er erwarb 12 Hektaren Rebfläche und baute zwei Kellereien. Eine in Brusio und eine in Tirano. 44
Mit Sicherheit ist es nicht einfach Winzer im Veltlin zu sein. Erstens litt die Region in der Vergangenheit unter einem schlechten Image, zweitens steht sie nach wie vor im Schatten der westlich gelegenen Region Piemont (die ebenfalls die Güte des Nebbiolos zelebriert) und drittens sind die Rebberge derart steil (teils über 60% Gefälle!), dass der Aufwand im Rebberg gigantisch ist. Statistiken zufolge beträgt der Arbeitsaufwand im Schnitt für eine Hektare Rebland in Australien 40 Stunden im Jahr, im Tessin 800 Stunden, im Wallis 1100 Stunden und im Veltlin 1400 Stunden. Wie Innovativ die Plozza Vini ist, zeigen die in den letzten Jahren lancierten Weine. Ersterer ist der «Numero 1», ein reiner Nebbiolo aus 50-jährigen Reben, deren Trauben nach der Ernte für drei Monate im Dachstock zum Trocknen ausgelegt werden. Der gepresste Saft ruht anschliessend während zwei Jahren in neuen Barriques. Der erste Jahrgang war der 2000er und schon der darauf folgende Jahrgang 2001 wurde vom Gambero Rosso auf Anhieb mit der Höchstbewertung von «tre bicchieri» prämiert. Verständlich, dass der Wein mittlerweile auf mancher TopWeinkarte anzureffen ist. Zweiter Streich ist der «24 K», ein geheimnisvoller und auf weniger als 500 Flaschen limitierter Topwein aus Nebbiolo und Cabernet Sauvignon. Zwei Weine, die nicht nur von der
neuen Zanolari-Generation vinifiziert worden sind, sondern auch einen neuen Zeitgeist etablieren. Es sind kräftige, stolze Weine, die moderner als der Rest der Palette auftreten und dadurch tolle Türöffner und Botschafter für das Weinhaus Plozza sind.
Wine passion from the Valtellina The Zanolari family demonstrates what extraordinary wine culture from the Valtellina is all about and how to reap the best results from the steep plantation of vines in Tirano. Next to their great classics “Seduzione”, “Passione” and “Sforzato”, their wine portfolio includes the top wine “Numero 1” as well as the limited rare edition named “24K”. All these wines are a celebration of the superior quality and varied facets of the Nebbiolo grape. Plozza’s owners are Swiss, a part of the company including the bottling plant is located on Swiss soil at Poschiavo, yet the grapes are grown in Tirano, just off the Swiss border, in Italy. The entire press and production site is also situated in Tirano. In the year 1919 the 29-year-old Pietro Plozza followed his calling, and the employee of the Rhaetian Railway became a wine merchant. No wonder this wine features on quite a number of top wine lists. The second coup is the “24 K”, an enigmatic top wine from Nebbiolo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, limited to less than 500 bottles. The two wines have not only been vinified by the new Zanolari generation, they also represent a new zeitgeist. These are powerful, proud wines, more modern than the rest of the range, but at the same time wonderful door openers and ambassadors for the Plozza winery.

Goccia d`Oro Cuvée Rosé is created from the Prosecco and Raboso grape varieties, which develop their personality primarily on the high-lying hills in the southern part of Veneto, Italy. This rosé is characterised by a radiant, tender pink colour with fine and lasting effervescence, as a well as a sweeping, characteristic bouquet of distinctive elegance and complexity. A light fragrance reminiscent of roses accompanied by fine echoes of fresh fruit, citron fruits and lychee round off this cuvée. On the palate, it displays a balanced acidity, and is full-bodied and spicy with harmoniously sustained aromas of astounding length. The Goccia d`Oro Cuvée Rosé is a pleasant, versatile and light Spumante (sparkling wine). It is especially suitable as an aperitif, as well as for snacks with vegetables, light meats and all kinds of seafood.

Brando – das richtige Material zählt Christian Zweifel der Macher von BRANDO, würde sich selbst nicht als Designer bezeichnen. Vielmehr ist es hochstehendes Handwerk das ihn fasziniert und zu welchem er selber bei der Entstehung seiner Stücke beiträgt. Ursprung seiner Kollektion war nicht irgendein Marketingkonzept oder der Drang möglichst etwas luxuriöses anbieten zu können – obwohl wie er lachend zugibt, es ihm die edlen Materialien durchaus angetan haben. Die Idee zu BRANDO ist aus einem Entwurf gewachsen. Danach kam ein zweites und ein drittes Stück. Erst später ist der Name BRANDO dazugestossen. Inzwischen umfasst die Kollektion Modeaccessoires und Schmuck für Mann und Frau. Christian Zweifel ist überzeugt, mit BRANDO auf dem hart umkämpften Markt der Luxusprodukte mithalten zu können. „Meine Vorteile sind die Exklusivität der Stücke, die kleinen Auflagen (bis zur Einzelanfertigung) und die hohe Qualität der verarbeiteten Materialien.“ Tatsächlich weiss er von allen seinen Lieferanten eine kleine Anekdote zu erzählen. Bewusst verzichtet er aber darauf, da für ihn die Güte der verwendeten Materialien und die Handwerksqualität Empfehlung genug sind. Preislich sieht er sich in wettbewerbsfähiger Position gegenüber seinen grossen Mitanbietern. Während sich die grossen Labels vor allem mit immensen Marketingkosten und horrenden Mieten für Topverkaufslagen herumschlagen müssen, bietet er seine Produkte lieber direkt oder über sehr selektiv gewählte Partner an. „Meine Produkte sollen einen fairen Preis haben, dass heisst der Käufer soll für einen angemessenen Preis ein entsprechendes Produkt erhalten.“ Man kann dies seiner Meinung nach auch einfach nachrechnen. Alle eingesetzten Materialien sind bei gleichen Qualitäten preislich durchaus vergleichbar. Dazu kommen die Arbeitskosten. Wo die grossen Unterschiede entstehen, sind die erwähnten Marketingkosten und der Vertrieb. „Bei mir bekommen Sie das Produkt inklusive Geschenkverpackung und ein Aftersales Service ist auch garantiert.“ Man merkt bei seinen Äusserungen, dass da auch ein Verkäuferherz schlägt und er als sozusagen „One Man Show“ auch den geschäftlichen Teil seines Business beherrscht. Rather it is the high-standing craft fascinates him and whom he contributes to the formation of his own pieces. Origin of his collection was not some marketing plan or the possible urge being able to offer something luxurious – although like it laughing admits, his noble materials have certainly done. The idea for BRANDO has grown from a draft. After came a second and then a third piece. Only later the name BRANDO was given. Meanwhile, the collection includes fashion accessories and jewelry for men and women. Christian Zweifel is convinced keep up with BRANDO in the highly competitive market for luxury products. „My advantage is the exclusivity of the pieces, limited editions (to the custommade item) and the high quality of the processed materials.“
That means the customer buy’s reasonable price corresponding to the product he receives. One can check this according to its opinion also simply. All used materials are comparable in price with the same qualities. Then there are the production costs. Das Hotel Castell gehört dem Künstler und Kunstsammler Ruedi Bechtler aus Zürich. Einen kleineren Anteil hält auch der Zürcher Galerist Iwan Wirth. So ist es nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass Hausherr Ruedi Bechtler überall im Hotel Teile seiner international ausgerichteten, zeitgenössischen Kunstsammlung präsentiert. Arbeiten von Carsten Höller, Roman Signer, Angela Bulloch, Simon Starling, Christine Streuli oder Martin Kippenberger demonstrieren Weltklasse. Selbst die Schlüsselanhänger sind eine künstlerische Arbeit: Sie stammen von dem in New York lebenden Schweizer Künstler Olaf Breuning. Naturverbundene Kunst und spektakuläre Architektur begegnen sich aufs Vortrefflichste auf Tadashi Kawamatas ungewöhnlicher Holzterrasse – bei sonnigem Wetter der bevorzugte Treffpunkt für Lunch oder Teatime. Die bekannte Videokünstlerin Pipilotti Rist hat zusammen mit der Architektin Gabrielle Hächler die einladende „Rote Bar“ in Form eines Fragezeichens realisiert. Noch vor dem abendlichen Apéro kann man den Sonnenuntergang auf unvergleichliche Art im nur wenige Schritte entfernten, kreisrunden „Skyspace“ des amerikanischen Lichtkünstlers James Turrell zelebrieren. Ein magischer Ort, in dem das Zusammenspiel von subtil eingesetzter High-Tech-Beleuchtung und authentischer Natur zu jeder Tagesund Nachtzeit und bei jedem Wetter anders erlebt werden kann. Experiencing art The Hotel Castell is owned by the Zurich artist and art collector Ruedi Bechtler. The Zurich gallery owner Iwan Wirth also holds a small share in the enterprise. As a result, it does not come as a surprise that host Ruedi Bechtler presents parts of his international contemporary art collection everywhere in the building. There are high-calibre works by Carsten Höller, Roman Signer, Angela Bulloch, Simon Starling, Christine Streuli or Martin Kippenberger. Even the key rings are a work of art: they were designed by the Swiss born and New York based artist Olaf Breuning. Art inspired by nature and spectacular architecture come together beautifully in Tadashi Kawamata’s unusual wooden terrace which has become a favourite meeting place for lunch and teatime on sunny days. The renowned video artist Pipilotti Rist created the alluring „Red Bar“ in the shape of a question mark in cooperation with Architect Gabrielle Hächler. Late at night, the visitor discovers moving reflections of images even on bottle labels, as if guided by a ghostly hand. Before it is time for pre-dinner drinks, one can celebrate a spectacular sunset a short distance away in the circular installation „Skyspace“, designed by the American light artist James Turrell. A magical place where the harmony of subtle high-tech-illumination and unspoilt nature can be experienced differently every hour of the day and night, in all weathers. The so-called „Art Weekends“ are a unique specialty of the Hotel Castell. Guests with an interest in art can meet well-known artists close up. Roman Signer, the action artist from St.Gallen who is famous for his explosive experiments, has more than once created a big bang at the Hotel Castell. „Collector’s Days“ have already taken place on five occasions in September. Every year, international art dealers, collectors and an interested public meet to discuss contemporary art, new discoveries and trends as well as personal collecting strategies in a dense, but unpretentious programme of talks. This event, which has been developed by Ruedi Bechtler and Basle curator Daniel Baumann and which is the only one of its kind, enjoys an excellent reputation in the art world far beyond Switzerland.

Cinema at the Castell Lovers of the Fine Arts are thus well catered for at the Castell. In addition, the hotel has recently expanded its programme to accommodate film enthusiasts. Each Thursday night cinematic highlights and rarities are shown in the newly-renovated hotel cinema. The well-known Zurich film publicist Walter Ruggle has designed the ambitious programme. No Hollywood classics or stale mainstream cinema, but small gems from Asia, South America or Africa, selected with the know-how of a true expert and with a fine intuition for sensuous images.
