Moon of the Salal Berry

Much of August is "the moon of the salal berry." During this moon, many plants are ready to harvest. Salal berries are picked, mashed, dried, and made into cakes.

Currants and trailing blackberries are also ripe at this time. Meanwhile camas leaves shrivel, making it a particularly good time to harvest the bulbs. Chinook runs are reaching their peak with the summer run continuing and the fall run starting up the river. Fall Chinook run through the next two moons. Salmon in rivers are caught using weirs, dip nets and spears. Seals, which are also fishing for salmon, are hunted near the fishing sites. Salmon are eaten fresh and a large amount is dried for winter use.

This moon signals a good time to wind dry the fish, before the insects increase.

PUBLIC HEALTH UPDATE SWINOMISH PUBLIC HEALTH

July 26, 2022 – Swinomish Public Health has confirmed a total of 1,161 cases of COVID-19 in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The transmission level is still HIGH in Skagit County and here at Swinomish! The good news is there are things you can do to keep yourself and your family healthy and out of the hospital: • Make sure you are fully vaccinated and have all the boosters you can.

• Do what you can to not get COVID by distancing and masking when gathering indoors or in crowds.

If you do get COVID, call your healthcare provider or the Swinomish COVID-19 Helpline to see if you can take anti-viral medication, which will decrease the severity of your illness.

The hot weather is bringing us indoors just like the cold weather does. As a COVID precaution, make sure you have your doors and windows open and fans blowing. Or, if you have AC, be sure there is airflow throughout your home and continue to keep your distance from others. Meet with people from outside your household outdoors and in the shade, preferably early in the morning or late evening as extreme temperatures can be a source for heat-related illnesses.

Financial support through the Swinomish Emergency Rental Assistance Program (SERAP) is still available until September 30. If you are a renter and are late paying rent or utilities, or are struggling to stay current, please contact serap@swinomish.nsn.us for an application.

SERAP can assist with past due rent and utility bills, and current amounts due for those who qualify.

It was a Good Run! RETIREMENT LETTER FROM BARBARA WASSERMAN

I spent many hours thinking, questioning, and trying to come up with the right words to convey my many thanks and gratitude to the Swinomish Tribal Community for all you have given me. It has been a wonderful opportunity to serve and work with all of you, from babies to elders. I learned so much and, from the time I took a contract to work with students on life and study skills in 1994 through my 5 years working with the school district and the Tribe on the bridge program and my 23 years working at the Swinomish Medical Clinic as your medical social worker, that learning has never ended.

I always thought it would be time to retire when I no longer looked forward to Mondays, but that never happened. What happened is that I have four beautiful grandchildren between the ages of 1-4 that I want to spend more time with. So, it is with a heavy heart that I say it is time for me to move on.

I have learned from the best. Many of the elders that have passed on were my first teachers. I was fortunate to hear the late Bertha Dan, Laura Edwards, Laura Wilbur, Landy James, Wa Walton, and many others who spoke at gatherings where I was the student.

I have worked with some of the best. Jane Mayer, Cathy Lewis, Dr. Backman, Dr. Backlund, Dr. Harold Clure, Joe Dunn, Mary Ellen Cayou, John Stephens, Susan Wilbur, Brian Cladoosby, Lorraine Loomis, and the dynamic pre-school duo Thea and Carol. Every year prior to the pandemic, I looked forward to helping out in the kitchen and serving at the Annual Blessing of the Fleet and First Salmon Ceremony.

I have so many good memories!

Community member co-workers, elders I visited in their homes over the years, new moms with their little ones, students, patients, former and present senators, fishermen and women, and countless other community members were all generous with sharing their teachings. I will be forever grateful to all of you. You have shared your culture, your homes, your families, and your hearts. Thank you.

I will do my best to pass on resources and knowledge to the next medical social worker. Please know that this is a bittersweet moment for me. I will miss you all.

They always traveled to many tribes and nations across Indian Country to help anyone in need. Chester was a Vietnam Veteran, both Chester and Fred served in the United States Army; just as their dad had done. He loved and cherished his family more than anything, 54 years ago he stole the heart of a young lady from Spokane. He was very honored to step up and take care of auntie and Beth

Well for Culture We had the pleasure of having Thosh Collins from Well for Culture walk us through a series of movement exercises throughout the conference. The exercises he demonstrated were unlike your regular movements and, even after doing a few simple stretches each day, actually made a few of us sore because we were using parts of our body we don’t usually use. I strongly encourage folks to look deeper into the work Thosh and his wife, Chelsey Luger, are doing to promote movement in Indigenous communities. It has been fun incorporating

A Valuable Close To close the conference, a panel of women answered questions from conference goers. Each shared something valuable that I will continue to carry with me in the work that we are doing here in Swinomish. It was heartening and motivating to see and hear women of all ages who care so deeply about our Mother Earth share their closing remarks. The conversation drifted from food, but in that moment, I was reminded that even though the word “food” may not have been used throughout the entire panel, it was still there through their experiences – because food is a part of who we inherently are as Indigenous peoples.

Marine debris is not only a pervasive threat to our ocean, Great Lakes, and waterways, but can affect navigation safety, the economy, and even human health. The NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) is the federal government’s lead for addressing marine debris, with a mission to investigate and prevent its adverse impacts.

What is marine debris?

Any persistent solid material that is manufactured or processed and directly or indirectly, intentionally or unintentionally, disposed of or abandoned into the marine environment or Great Lakes.

Where does marine debris come from?

All marine debris comes from people. It can enter the ocean and waterways from land through littering, poor waste management practices, storm water discharge, and extreme natural events such as tsunamis and hurricanes. Debris can also come from ocean-based sources, such as fishing vessels, stationary platforms used for offshore oil and gas, cargo ships, and other large vessels.

The telemetry equipment detects radio signals emitted from collars deployed on elk during helicopter and ground capture operations, which allows us to locate the elk. The collars also include on board GPS units, which record elk movement data and transmit those data to Swinomish wildlife biologists. Collectively, the telemetry and GPS location information allow us to identify key habitat for elk in the area and work with our wildlife co-managers and collaborators to protect that important habitat. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) would like to introduce you to our team! We will be sharing a little bit about our amazing staff and the work they are doing here in qyuuqs News. This month we are highlighting two members of our education team, Jen Willup and Melissa Ciesielski.

Jen loves that her work keeps the community strong and preserves the Swinomish culture, traditions, histories, and values. She wants to continue to pass those relationships and knowledge along where she can to help keep Swinomish strong. She appreciates the opportunity to work in the community practicing her culture as well as seeing her relatives and friends and witnessing all the work that is done at Swinomish. In her words: “It’s amazing to participate in tribal sovereignty every day and show my son what we can do to make our world a beautiful place.”
