Moon of the Elk Mating Cry

(pud-HWEE-cheeb) Late September/Early October is "the moon of the elk mating cry," signaling autumn. This moon is a very busy time because all five salmon runs are fished and dried. The last of the fall Chinook run are entering the river while dog salmon, also called chum, are starting their run. Dog salmon dry lean, making them ideal for storage. Hunting also begins for larger game such as deer and elk.

Moon of the Falling Leaves

(pud-kwuh-HWEETS) Much of October is "the moon of the falling leaves." During this moon, the last stocks of sockeye, and humpback go up-river, while silvers and dog salmon are reaching their peak. Fishing and drying salmon for the winter months continues. This is the height of the harvest, because the plants are maturing and starting to die. It is a good time to gather nettles, cattails, salal, and bracken fern roots. Hunting begins for ducks, geese, and other birds, as they return for the winter, and also for larger game such as deer and elk.

Increasing the Presence of Camas on the

Camas is one of the most important cultural foods in the Coast Salish territory. Historically, it was second only to salmon in its value as a trade item. Camas prairies were maintained by fire and other cultivation practices for millennia, and were widespread throughout the Swinomish Tribe’s U&A territory, from coastal shorelines to the foothills of the Cascade Mountains.

Today, there are few camas prairies on or near the Swinomish Reservation, and it is no longer part of the everyday diet. Yet camas remains important for cultural uses, and there is a strong desire within our community to reinvigorate camas stewardship, harvest, and consumption into the everyday lives of our people.

In the fall of 2019, the Native American Agriculture Fund awarded the Department of Environmental Protection a two-year grant to study camas cultivation strategies in our agricultural lands. The goal of this project is to increase Swinomish Tribal Community access to camas, strengthening our tribe’s food sovereignty by invigorating our connections to this important first food.

We have begun installing cultivation plots to better understand strategies we can use to grow healthy, robust camas plants, and at the same time manage invasive weeds.

Vera's Journey to Recovery Through the Swinomish Wellness Program My journey began 27 years ago, with alcohol and marijuana. At the time, I had no idea where the path I was walking would lead me. Today, I am almost 43 years old and have 389 days of being clean and sober.

During my active addiction, I was in and out of jail, and treatment, constantly. I lost all control of my substance use due to grief, loss, trauma, and hardship. Prior to making the decision to get serious about my recovery, I was using opiate-based pills and fentanyl up to nine times a day. I lost everything in this world that I valued most — my children, the respect of my community, and myself.

The Swinomish Wellness Program allowed me one last opportunity to take my life back through participation in Swinomish Healing to Wellness Court. I was admitted into residential treatment at Triumph Treatment Services in Yakima, where I stayed for 35 days. Triumph allowed me to take on a leadership role with other residents who were struggling with their commitment to recovery and desire to stay in treatment. I successfully graduated from my program there and transitioned into the women’s Transitional Living program and house at Swinomish, where my participation in Healing to Wellness Court began.

One of the things I am most proud of in my recovery journey is being hired to work at Manchu Wok at the Swinomish Casino & Lodge. I have also worked my way into phase three of the Healing to Wellness Court program – and I have only one phase left to complete. I have been working through MRT, which is a treatment group that is focused on responsibility and personal accountability for actions and behaviors in active addiction. A big component of my MRT group is paying it forward to my community through service work, which I have been able to accomplish in working with Michaela at the Upper Skagit Wellness Program. We are designing and creating community care boxes focused on cultural tradition that will be distributed to members of my tribe.

My success on my journey to recovery has been challenging but I continue to maintain my focus and commitment to my path towards healing. My hope is to continue paying it forward to my community, and to assist others interested in finding their own recovery and wellness by helping them to take the first step.

This has been a tough seven months for all of us. We’ve done hard things to keep our neighbors and loved ones safe. We’ve missed celebrations for birthdays and milestones.

We’ve lost jobs and small businesses. We’ve missed visiting loved ones in the hospital. Our kids miss seeing their friends and teachers in school. We miss hugs, handshakes, a friend’s comforting hand on our shoulders. We are tired of these hard changes and of the isolation.

Our people have another beautiful place to rest in the new cemetery. The community also gathered for other important cultural work - laying to rest the ancestral remains from the Tribe's ancient homelands. All together, 22 wooden boxes were buried in the first area of the new dedicated cemetery. It was mentioned that the actual cemetery is done, now the construction for the new community center can begin.
