Toothill family makes contact A local family made a historic reunion with long lost American cousins in September. Don Lea of Markenfield, Toothill has been collecting information about his ancestors for years and has traced his family tree right back to the sixteenth century. There are over one hundred relations in the Swindon and Malmsbury area, and thereare others all around the world. When he heard that his second cousin June Dengate from Ohio would be touring Britain with her husband and daughter, he contacted her to arrange a visit to Swindon. Much tojune's surprise she- was greeted at Don's house by twenty members of the British connection whom she did not know about. "1 was asked if we would be visiting relations in England and I said there might be one or two, but I never realised there were so many," said June. "It's wonderful to know I have such a big family." June's grandmother was sister to Don's grandfather and it was her father who emigrated to the USA at the age of 16. His many stories about life in pee-World War I Wiltshire left a strong impression with June. Don took her to her father's birthplace, the pub run by her grandfather, and other sites around Malmsbury made the day visit an emotional one. "It's hard to put into words. Tears came to my eyes to see the places my father talked about," she said Don said that he was glad to meet June and her family. "I've been working on the family tree so that we can keep in touch with each other

June will help me contact the relations of another of my grandfather's brothers who emigrated in the early 1900s. "It's a complicated business, but many of the lost relations are being fitted into the Lea family jigsaw."

Tootleabrook WI June Bradley writes: At our August meeting Mrs Penny Ady gave a most interesting and informative talk on colour and image. In September Mrs J Coats showed us how easy 'Yeast Cookery'is. Shedemonstrated many mouth watering recipes. Weallsampled these and are definitely going to treat our families to some of them. One of our own members also showed us how to make marzipan fruits. We were all surprised how easy these are to make and how realistic the results. Our next meeting on 21 October will be the Annual Craft and Produce Show. We are having a cake stall at the West Swindon Centre on 23 October. Please come and see us there. The WI has ladies of all ages and interests. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month in the CommunityRoomatToothillSchool at 730pm. For further information telephone 495520.
