ADVISORY SERVICE FOR SMALL BUSINESS 'GET SET AND GO' Swindon Enterprise Trust, an independant organisation, was established in 1981 as part of the Borough's employment initiatives programme Like its counterpart organisations, now numbering over three hundred throughout the U.K., it is jointly funded by the local authority (T.B.C.) and local industry and commerce. Latterly central Government has offered a grant to match the private sector contribution. The prime objective of the Trust is to encourage the growth and expansion of both new and existing small business in Thamesdown and surrounding district. After four years of operation S.E.T. can look back with pride at having given some degree of
help and guidance to over 600 start-ups and over 300 existing small businesses. The range of help is considerable starting from simple viability assessments of the many ideas put forward by clients, through to giving direction in market research and marketing generally, preparation of business plans for presentation to Banks and other potential lending sources. Additionally where specialist help is needed the Trust has a number of supporting professional firms to whom clients can be referred for initially free consultations. Other specialised back-up is provided by the Trusts many supporters in local industry and commerce. Training is an essential ingredient for the successful entre-
preneur. In this connection S.E.T. is closely linked with eight higher educational establishments to devise, promote and participate in a continuous programme of small business courses including those sponsored by M.S.C. Thamesdown has been an area of significant industrial and commercial growth. In spite of this premises for the new small business starter are difficult to find. S.E.T. acts as a local information point on small units and spaces and is active in establishing nursery workshop units for the future. QUALITY ON OFFER
"You don't get service like you used to" is a saying often heard. However it applies to West Swindon resident Eddie Hughes who has set up as a glazing specialist with the assistance of the Government's Enterprise Allowance Scheme. So far business has been quite good with over 80% of his work coming from the best measure of confidence - word of mouth. Eddie will take on the smallest to the largest jobs, and being on his own, he offers tremendous flexibility. He offers a 24 hour emergency repair service and he is able to replace individual double-glazed units which break down, when condensation appears between the panes. Eddie also supplies replacement windows but unlike the big operators he will supply and install them on an individual basis as and when the client can afford house improvements at little extra cost, he will also do the work when its convenient to the customer. So even though its winter, he's able to install windows quickly, efficiently and without inconvenience. EAH Services are in Westlea. Telephone 870838. General Manager Robert Hardy, assisted by two full time senior managers, Ian Markey and Eric Annis, seconded from British Rail and W H Smith respectively, together with help from part-time professional as well as full-time secretarial staff. There is no charge for the advisory and counselling services of the Trust.
