SHAW SHOP OPENS WITHOUT POST OFFICE

Within days of opening Shaw's new convenience store at the Village Centre on Ramleaze Drive is proving to be a much needed and popular facility.

However, visitors to the new JCR shop will be and have been suprised by the absence of a sub-post office, as found at the other Village Centres in the area. JCR were led to believe by the Post Office, when negotiating the lease for the store, that a branch would be opened and a counter was provided. However the formal application for a sub-post office at Shaw was subsequently rejected, much to the amazement of JCR management.

"Our customers expect a Post Office, we want to provide one," said JCR Managing Director Nick Shaw. "The situation is to be reviewed in three months." But a letter to Mr. Shaw from Post Office Counters Ltd. District Manager Brian Strange, based in Bristol, indicates that the opening of a sub-office is unlikely. Mr. Strange was unavailable for comment but Swindon Area Manager Andy Stone said "We are still doing research. A Post Office at Shaw is not out of the question by any means."

Toothill Pharmacy at last Toothill's long awaited pharmacy opened its doors at the beginning of October after two years argument, persuasion and negotiations.

A campaign was launched after the original doctor's surgery moved to bigger premises to get a doctor and a pharmacy back into the Toothill community. Dr. Kandiah started a general practice at 1 Deerhurst Way earlier this year but a further six months passed before the pharmacy was able to open up a much needed community service.

Councillor Midwinter, who led the campaign with residents to get the health facilities back into Toothill, called upon residents to support the new community based health services. "I would urge people to support these local services to secure their future," he commented.

WHAT'S THE FUTURE FOR YOUTH IN TOOTHILL

GETTING ADVICE There are two advice sessions run at Toothill Community Centre both on Tuesday every week.

The morning session is run by the West Swindon Advice Centre, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. They offer help with Welfare Benefits, such as Supplementary Benefit, Unemployment problems, Disability rights, widows benefits and claims from the Social Fund (Maternity and Funeral costs, etc.), pensions, debts, statutory sick pay (SSP) and much more.

The afternoon advice session is run by Housing Assistant Mike Weston, from 2p.m. to 4.30 p.m.

He deals with housing problems such as neighbour disputes, can arrange for repairs to be carried out and can provide advice on rent and rate rebate queries (Housing Benefit).

The West Swindon Advice Centre is run entirely by volunteers trained by Thamesdown Law Centre. Mike Weston works for Thamesdown Borough Council's Housing Department.

The two Advice centres are not connected, but friendly, free and confidential help is offered at both sessions.

The only full time youth work b post in the area is going to be lost in April unless new funding is found. Are you concerned for the long term interests of youth in Toothill?

The opinion of a two-year-old and the chance to raise some money forced a local Dentist to give up something he had cared for over the last 18 years.

Nobody knew Brendan Ball from the Freshbrook Dental Surgery without a beard, but just before he went on holiday in early October he had it shaved off! "My daughter Chrissie decided I was too prickly so I decided to give my beard to a good cause," said Brendan whilst being shaved by Sue Collins, owner of Cut 'n Dry Hair Salon at Freshbrook Village Centre and soon at the new Shaw Centre.

Brendan is President of the West Swindon Branch of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade. The

organisation nationally is celebrating its centenary and the staff of the Freshbrook dental practice have been enthusiastically fundraising in aid of the new local branch. Earlier this year, staff and friends undertook a sponsored night hike on the Ridgeway. The money raised from revealing Brendan's naked face and that raised on the walk will total over £500. This has purchased gas/air pain relief equipment and portable oxygen resuscitation packs.

The sting of the after shave on his bare skin following his shave gave Brendan an experience he had not had for a long time. His next fundraising idea is awaited with baited breath.

WESTLEA

WORRIES OVER TENNIS SITE Thamesdown Borough Council's Planning Committee recently gave outline planning permission for a Tennis Centre to be built in Westlea.

But there are worries about the effect of the scheme.

The project, being put forward by the Taylor Woodrow Company, proposes six outdoor tennis courts and three indoors. Also proposed for the balance of the site are 90 houses or alternatively, as the area is next to the Delta Business Park, it could be used for creating employment.

The site is located to the north of Featherwood, to the east of Westlea Park and Moresby Close and south of Alveston Close.

The Planning Committee agreed that there should be heavy landscaping between the tennis courts and Featherwood, the car park will be at the furthest point from housing and there should be no floodlighting.

However, local Councillor Ricky Midwinter, in welcoming the Tennis Centre as an asset to the community, said he would like to hear the views of residents. "Whilst housing would be preferred against putting industrial buildings or offices so close to housing, it means another temporary classroom at Westlea School."

The Planning Committee will study a detailed application for planning permission in a few months. In the meantime, Councillor Midwinter would welcome comments. (See page 23 for address).

DIGGING FOR SCHOOL POND

Westlea School will be the proud owner of its own pond in the near future. Westlea Cubs and Scouts are enthusiastically excavating an area of ground which is in fact designated as the site for a second school.

Headteacher Neil Griffiths said that where the digging is taking place seems to be a natural pond.

Commenting on the great effort by those who swam, playgroup committee member Kim Aling said "It was great fun. A lot of people did something they hadn't done for years and I think they surprised themselves."

Following a recent Governor's meeting at the new Brook Field Primary School, where the concern expressed by parents on the possibility of future 'mobile' classrooms was discussed, a letter has been sent to Whiltshire County Council's Chief Education Officer, requesting that the school planned for Roughmoor be brought forward one year in the Capital Budget. Development of housing is already well under way in that area and there is considerable worry that unless the school opens before September 1990, many children will have a long and hazardous walk to attend classes, not to mention possible overcrowding at Brook Field. Governors and Teachers agree that 300 pupils in a Primary School ought to be the maximum in order that all pupils become known to the Head Teacher Concern was also expressed in the letter, that no plans exist for another secondary school in the Western Expansion. Once house building is completed in a few years, it could mean that over 2,000 pupils a day will have to be bussed out of the area to take a place wherever one can be found.

SKIING TRIP

by Phil Bathe Both West Swindon sides have settled in well at their new home at Greendown. The first team has made a successful start, being fifth in the League and have a 6-0 away win at Ramsbury to their credit. The reserves have also started well and are in high scoring form having scored 19 goals in their opening 6 games. The club, with the help of generous sponsorship from Potter and Sons, and the excellent facilities at Greendown, are now well established in the area. The club, though, is still looking to improve and is looking for new players and local firms for sponsorship.

DAY IN THE LIFE ON HER BIKE AT 60

In last months Link Rosemary Poole spoke about her experience with the Third Age Project, a unique scheme to help people over the age of 46 look at their future and discover what opportunities there are. Here Rosemary reveals the vast range of activities she's involved in.

"I am a pretty early riser during the week, so at the weekends its nice to have time for an extra half an hour in bed with a lovely cuppa or a fruit drink to ponder what I will be doing and where I will be going.

My working days are spent as an Activity Organiser for Action Sport, a Manpower Service Commission Community Programme Project sponsored by Thamesdown Borough Council. This involves visiting the elderly in their sheltered homes and giving them gentle exercises and dance.

We also play indoor carpet bowls and darts. Some come along for a chat and just listen and there's usually a nice cup of tea offered.

Twice a week we go to a swimming pool of Aquarobics. We all

thoroughly enjoy these sessions.

I've met some lovely people and made many friends.

I've always been involved with dancing, swimming and exercise, so the week-ends are no exception. If I can be out-doors walking or in the garden I'm happy. This year I became the proud owner of a Mountain Bike.

For those who don't know what they are, they have a heavier frame and wheels so that they can be ridden across rough ground as well as on the road. So it's possible to ride across country and down tracks that other bikes could not. I see a lot more of the countryside now that I did not when sitting behind the wheel of my car, even though I get a bit more muddy.

My future husband George and I have had some lovely days cycling this summer. My mileage at the moment is about 35 miles, but that's not bad as I have not been on a bike for about 10 years.

One day a week I find time to spend a few hours as a

by Christine Ellis As I write we are only half way through Time Off fortnight at Link Centre and it is proving to be very exciting.

I've had a look at the exhibitions in The Mall and Library, but there is so much that it will take several visits. It's good to have creche facilities available to be able to do things like this in a concentrated way.

I have certainly welcomed the chance to stand back and reappraise the shape and direction of my life. When women are 'on duty' so much of the time, it is very easy for us to get swept along in the wake of other people's lives - growing children, ageing parents, partners' careers. Suddenly the years and other people are gone, or independent, and you are left wondering who you

really are, or were fifteen years ago.

For many women the opportunities for choice and flexibility in their lives are greater than ever before and the above situation arises perhaps less today.

Nonetheless, there are still many people who are totally unaware of the reality of the burden of the work undertaken in the voluntary caring for the elderly, sick or handicapped, in bringing up a family. being 'on duty' 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year after year; doing this and sometimes holding down a full or part-time job as well!

I am optimistic that after Time Off For Women 1987 a few more people will be aware of the womens contribution to the community.

ARTS SCENE LINKS WITH THE PAST

WHAT'S ON AT LINK ARTS Films

On Saturday 7th November the Children's Film Club presents 'Young Sherlock Holmes' (PG) t 2.30 p.m. Produced by Steven Spielberg the film speculates on what might have happened during the youthful yam of Sherlock Holmes. 'The Secret of Nimh' (U) is a full length cartoon about a widowed lady mouse who stumbles onto a laboratory full of super intelligent rats. Starts at 2.30 p.m. Entrance to each film is SOp, membership 25p.

For older viewers the Film Society is showing 'The Shooting Party' (15) on Thursday 19th November. This was James Mason's last film and tells the story of an aristocratic weekend in the country. The Swindon Film Society is showing the French film 'Vagabonde at the Arts Centre in Devizes Road on Friday 20th November.

Wall Mosaic at the Link Centre

The Link Centre is pleased to announce it's latest public art purchase. The large wall mosaic above the Centre's entrance doors by the swimming pool was produced by Louise Pearson, an Art Student from Bath. The mosaic is 12 feet long and depicts scenes of activity from within the Link Cente, swimming, running and tennis. It also contains a detail of an exhibition held in the Arts Studios by Pete Steel in February 1986. This exhibition was entitled 'Invitation to a Wake' and dealt with issues of apartheid in South Africa.

The mosaic is made up of hundreds of ceramic tiles stuck on to a wooden frame and then grouted.

Classic & Rock Music at the Link

The concert, on 4th October, given by Swindon Choral Society and St Michael's Choir from Salzgitter was a great success.

Over five hundred people attended the Requiem performances and discussions are now taking place to bring other classical music concerts to the Centre. This is good news for West Swindon. So far the Oasis Leisure Centre has provided the focus for large scale musical events, although mainly for popular music, for example 'David Essex' and 'Simply Red'.

However the acoustics and atmosphere of the Link Hall seem to be of a high enough standard to encourage more live music of a classical nature.

Rock fans are also going to be catered for at the Link with a series of concerts by local bands in the Arts Studios. 'Rock Front' aims to provide local bands with opportunities for rehearsals and concerts on a regular basis. Three gigs have been arranged over the next few weeks so check out the Link Arts Studios for more details.

A thank you to those of you who have expressed appreciation of the library column. It is not always easy to think of new things to write of interest and I thought perhaps to include some mini staff profiles starting next month. I'm afraid we do not have 'Dynasty' type backgrounds, but it might make you feel as if you know us all a little better. Look out also for children's competitions and quizzes which we also hope to start soon.

November 16th - 21st will see the library involved with an 'Under-5's Awareness Week' part of a national scheme to encourage parental awareness of options available for their young children. In addition to a colourful display of some of the newer titles available for this age groups, the library will be providing general information for parents and organising a storytime session (details of times will be announced in the library nearer the time).

Between November 17th and December 5th the library will be accommodating a display of the new Shaw Community Homes.

Organised by the Swindon Health Authority, this display will be manned for much of the time to help answer any questions and

there will also be a video explaining the process.

Many, many of our readers have expressed delight at the floral arrangements on the library desks. These are the work of local craftsperson Mooneen Corrigan who exhibited at the library earlier in the summer.

Mooneen will be returning at the end of November and beginning of December. The theme this time will be Christmas festivities and we are expecting Mooneen to produce some colourful seasonal floral decorations and table pieces.

Only 2 or 3 books of interest to report on this month. Stephen King has a new blood curdler called 'Misery' - picture the hero lying in a hospital bed with a vengeful nurse wielding drugs, axe and blowtorch!! New from the pen of Susan Howatch is 'Glittering Images'. In her usual dramatic style, the story tells of people in high places all seeking power whilst hiding private and shameful secrets. Iris Murdoch has produced something a little different this time in 'The Book and the Brotherhood' - an erudite read posing political questions.

Finally, dare I mention we now have the new Dick Francis in stock, 'Hot Money' - just for a change it is about the world of horse racing!

YOUTH ANCIENT CONNECTIONS Few people would think that the Link Centre has much of a link with the ancient peoples of prehistory who created Stonehenge.

All this will change soon when the youngsters who use the Centre have created an all surrounding piece of art.

Those who know the Community Suite at Link Centre may know the club room which is used by teenagers with the support of youth workers Lyn Davies and J0 Marchment. The room is windowless and its bare walls cannot be tolerated by many people for long. However, the young people who use the room have come up with the idea of creating their own Stonehenge by painting a mural all the way round the room. A group of them gained permission to enter the enchanted circle of stones in August to take photographs and to get a feel for the mysteries contained within it.

Using the photographs and slides projected on to the walls, the circle is being recreated in the

Sharon Forest room. In contrast to the Stonehenge theme, once the walls have been painted the next idea is to paint the Starship Enterprise on the floor!

challenge in trying to convince customers that buying from him will be in their interests. But he reckons he can make a go of bringing a convenient, high quality service to the doorstep.

"I'm sure customers wih find the prices for my fruit and vegetables the best in West Swindon," said Ken. "And I know the quality will be superb."

Ken Croker is very aware that quality of produce will have to be his hallmark and after being in the trade since he left school, he knows a thing or two about what to provide for his customers. In his mobile shop he will also sell items like sweets, crisps, soft drinks, cigarettes, toiletries,

EDUCATION MATTERS THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM -THE PARENTS' VIEW Education Matters this month is written by Rod Leverton who is chair of the Greendown Parent Teachers Association. If you would like to respond to the issues raised in this article please write to him. We shall print some of your comments in the next issue.

During the Summer holidays, most Secondary Schools received a large red book which contained suggestions by the Government for the new national curriculum for our state schools. Unfortunately, many, perhaps most, Primary Schools did not receive the document, and so have not had time to consider this very important issue. The parents at Greendown, with the support of the Governors, Staff and members of the Parents Association Committee, decided that they should try to make some form of response to the proposals in the document. Two open meetings were held, and the thirty or so parents who attended were able to read the document and make comments and suggestions these were then sent, as suggested, to the Secretary of State for Education, the RT Hon Mr Kenneth Baker MP. This then, is a precis of their

responses, together with the most important aspects of the relevant sections of the document: What is the National Curriculum?

The red book, suggests that , all schools have a curriculum which equips (children) with the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need for adult life'.

Compaied with our own schooling, which many parents felt was narrow and often irrelevant, this idea seems very welcome. There was a lot of support for the idea that as well as knowing the 'basics', reading, writing, etc. that our children need the benefit of a much wider education.

The document then makes some suggestions as to what exactly this means. Maths, English and Science form the top priority subjects, closely followed by foreign languages, technology, history, geography, art, music, and PE. In other words, almost exactly what we had when we were at school! This was quite disappointing - where was the moral education, where was the use of computers, where was the development of the skills that our children will need in the 'high tech' world which they will

enter after they leave school (we noticed that technology was included, but none of the areas of craft or design).

The document then raises the issue of 'attainment targets'. It seems to suggest that we should reintroduce something like the old eleven plus exam - not only at age eleven, but also at seven, fourteen and sixteen. We were very concerned of our children 'failing' such an exam, and had our own memories of the horror of our own experience and although we thought that children could have a 'target' which suggested what they might be able to do at varoius ages, we all know how different children are, and how they develop at different rates. We all felt that the system being suggested would be totally unfair and we were unanimously against the idea of that sort of test. We also wondered what was supposed to happen to the new GCSE - we're only just beginfling to understand that exam!

We then talked about who finally decides the curriculum.

The document seems to suggest that it is the Secretary of State who decides. This worried all of us - we were not convinced of the wisdom of letting any poli-

tician, of whatever party, have such power. Indeed we felt that on an issue of such importance to all our children, it was essential that the curriculum could only be decided by the decision of a large number of people - industrialists, teachers, parents and other interested members of society.

Finally, we all expressed our anxiety about the timing of the whole process. We had been given a little over two weeks to talk about a matter of supreme importance. The Government says it wants to give parents power, but then gives us so little time to consider the matter that it seems to be taking the power away before we have really managed to have any influence.

This summary is only a very small part of the wide ranging discussion which took place. EAST WEST RELATIONS

The first fundraising event to provide every Health Visitor in West Swindon with a set of portable electronic scales has succeeded in raising nearly enough money for two units.

At present there are nine Health Visitors but only three portable scales to go round.

Debbie Griffiths and other members of Shaw Parent & Toddler Group are behind the idea and hope that other community organisatioi in West Swindon will join them in raising enough money. Seventeen under-threes took part in a sponsored slide and managed to raise £208. Steve Dorling, 2, from Maxey Close, Shaw had some major financial backers and raised £56 from his efforts. The group also secured support from Renault and the Allied Dunbar Chritable Trust and expect a further £90 to add to their total.

If babies can be weighed more often, closer monitoring of their development can take place.

Parents can take children to the four clinics listed on the reference page of The Link, but not all do, and they are often the ones who need to be seen more often by Health Visitors. Debbie Griffiths is convinced that the

From one bed flats through to five bedroom mansions, there is a range of accommodation for people on different rungs of the housing ladder but as prices of some houses rise by up to a £1,000 per month, many people are losing the chance to become homeowners and some become real casualties of the boom town syndrome. According to Chris Griffin, Sales Executive with Swindon Estate Agents Dreweatt, Neate Farrant & Wightman, prices went up by an average of 13% in the first quarter of the year and between 15% and 20% for first time buyers. The half year price increase was expected to be around 25%. The end of year mark could be 50%.

"West Swindon is now more settled and has very attractive facilities," said Chris recently.

"A couple of years ago it was difficult to sell a one bed starter flat; now they go like hot cakes.

In fact everything is going very quickly. We expected the summer, post-election period to be quiet, but prices continued to shoot up, though more slowly."

The explosion in house prices right across southern England and particularly in the Thames Valley has several causes including the opening of the M25 motorway around London and the opening up of financial markets of The City to international finance houses. Swindon house prices are affected by this, and as companies move away from high London prices bringing people with them, their higher salaries are able to afford the rising prices. "There used to be lots of houses in the £20,000 to £30,000 bracket," said Chris.

"There's not much under £40,000 now. I'm meeting first time buyers from the Thames Valley able to spend £50,000, whilst there are several sites in West Swindon offering new houses from £80,000 to well over £100,000. It means that people with the lower Swindon wages are finding it difficult to stay in touch, they are just being priced out of the market.

"People from the north are buying in West Swindon and are finding it very difficult to sell houses up there; some take a big loss to make the move. In some places in the north of England, a three bed house can be bought for under £10,000."

by Claire Winter months are a depressing time; short days filled with rain clouds and dismal damp. What we want in the garden in these months is something that will look good through all the dreary days and look positively exciting on one of those ice-bright sunlit mornings.

Two plant species you may not have come across before and fulfill this role admirably are Mahonias and Viburnums. Both these have varieties that are evergreen and start flowering in November.

Mahonias look like a variation of holly, but their leaves are made up of a long rib with pairs of prickly leaflets arranged up to the tip. Each leaf is about 12-18 inches and forms part ofarosette that has had its centre pulled upward. This makes the Mahonia rather a domineering plant with a solid, prickly presence; an imposing feature near (but not too near) a house entrance. It is magnificent when the flowers come out. These are primrose yellow and in the varieties 'Charity', 'Lionel Fortescue' and 'Buckland' appear on a sheaf of stem rising from the top rosettes of leaves. In Mahonia japonica the flowers are more loosely spaced on stems that spray out from the rosettes more gently.

Viburnum tinus does not have the prickles at all; to the relief of many gardeners! This plant is completely hardy and will grow in the most rubble-filled, unpromising builders spoil tip sold to you as a garden. Left to itself it grows into a gently rounded bush of about 5ft x 5ft that is covered in heads of pink budded and white flowers from November.

The leaves are a dark leaden green; which is why it is often overlooked in garden centres.

This can be an asset if you are using it as a boundary shrub, to be a background to spring bulbs and summer bedding. But if you want year-round high visibility performance, you can buy a variegated-leaf cultivar.

There are mahonias planted around the 'Link' centre and a winter stroll from there along the Westlea Cycle path onto the newly planted areas around Lower Shaw Farm will display more ideas for planning and planting winter colour.
