A civilized walk along Österlen’s east coast.

Österlen, the southeastern part of the Swedish province of Skåne, home to artists and writers, and famous for the many songs and poems created for its beauty. /P16

Österlen’s east coast

In southeastern Skåne is a Swedish paradise known as Österlen, its name derived from its location “east of the route,” where the Baltic glitters along beaches as far as the eye can see. It’s a popular area for hiking all year round, with trails that go inland from the coast – through apple orchards, quiet lakes, several cultural heritage sites, even vineyards. A Swedish writer and photographer team put on their hiking boots for a walk along Österlen’s east coast, where they find the Swedish Tuscany. / P16 Sweden loves Lucy, too / p10 Nordic impressions in DC / p12 Searching for treasure in the Swedish woods / p21

Late Gustavian Style

King Gustav III’s time on the throne in the late 1700s left an enduring influence on Swedish decorative arts. Even as a youngster he loved the theater, and when he inherited Drottningholm in 1777, he was very involved in its life and productions; the royal theater remains the oldest operating European theater today. His Gustavian style of decorative arts in general – and Drottningholm Palace in particular – inspired the American Decorative Arts Trust to travel in Sweden and follow the legacy of King Gustav III. / P14
