Indian jewellery is as old as Indian civilisation itself. The ruins of the Indus Valley civilisation, going back to 5000 years, have yielded examples of beaded jewellery.

In the sculptures at Bharhut, Sanchi and Amaravati and the paintings at Ajanta can be seen the wide range of jewellery worn by man and woman, by king and commoner. The temples of South India, Bengal, Orissa and Central India present a veritable cornucopia of the jeweller's art.

Jewelry has undergone an unprecedented revolution in recent decades. Personal adornment has always attracted wide interest, but since the 1960s jewelry has found fresh inspiration. Influences from other arts, the use of surprising materials and the desire to make an individual statement or even to tell a story, have all combined to create a new and exciting movement.

Jewellery in ancient times was not only an adornment, but each stone was endowed with a mystical quality and used as a protection against evil forces. The navaratna or nine gems, each sacred to a planet, are worn in a particular order for the same reason to this day. The maniratna, called the serpent stone, was used as a talisman to protect the wearer. Rudraksha and Tulsi seeds and sandalwood beads are worn even today during Hindu worship.

The advent of Moghul rule further embellished Indian jewellery. The synthesis of Hindu and Muslim forms and patterns resulted in a great outburst of ornamentation, elegant and exquisite, and of a lush extravagance never seen before. Although traces of enamelling have been found in ancient Taxila, this art reached its zenith only under the Moghuls, when even the unseen reverse side of each jewel was covered with intricate enamel work (minakari).

Jewellery later became a means of putting by savings, like a bank today, and of providing financial security to women who sold it in times of need.

The Indian love of gold may have been a means of acquiring wealth. But the Indian love of jewellery is really a love of the beautiful and the aesthetic, of man's aspirations to reach perfection in form, design and colour. Repetition, symmetry and orderly progression in design are typical of the Indian belief in order, or R'ta, in the cosmic universe.

Such artist can create illustrations, paintings or sculptures that in their silence may scream in the loudest voice and in their stillness can produce movement unfathomable and in such a way that it can cut through your soul, can uplift your spirits or tear you apart without your consent in a moment's time. Nepali Artist Ishan Pariyar, is no different.

This extremely talented Visual artist is making a proper mark on the current art scene. Ishan Pariyar is the one who bring a myriad of visual culture influences to his fine art practice.

This young artist express his experience of Nepal's diverse social and cultural landscape in varied and fascinating ways.Unlike many other artists, Ishan Pariyar set out on his artistic journey at a very young age, after having identified a vision of his destiny.

Ishan Pariyar (born 1984) is a visual artist who has earned his MFA Degree in Painting from Central Department of Fine Art, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal in 2013. He is the recipient of ‘National Fine Art Award’ by Nepal Academy of Fine Art, ‘Creative Young Artist Award’ by Shiddhi Setuli Pratisthan, ‘Sita Shree Talent Award’ by Pant Memorial Academy, ‘Prashanta Memorial Scholarship Talent Award’ by Prashanta Memorial Society and numerous art prizes.

He is also a proficient performance artist who has participated in Kathmandu International Performance Art Festival 2016 organized by Bindu space for artists, 18th NIPAF ASIA series (Nippon international Performance Art Festival), Japan in 2015, Kolkata International Performance Art festival India in 2014, furthermore he has participated in Series of Performance Art in Kathmandu organized by Bindu space for artist since 2013.

He was selected in AIR_MCUBE artist in residence by Gallery MCUBE in 2014, ‘Artists Residency Program’

by Bindu space for artists’ in 2012. He has participated in National/International art exhibitions including ‘Art for Nature’ Relief fund for Wildlife Victims RFWV & EBA Project at Nepal Art council, Kathmandu, ‘Shraddhanjali’ Asia Level Art Show, AAO in Orissa India, ‘Nepali Water color Painting’ by Nepal Academy of Fine Arts, 6th ‘Incubarte International Art Festival’ in Spain, “7th , 8th, 9th & 10th Park Art Fair” and ‘return to nature’ an art excursion and exhibition by Park Gallery, National Art Exhibition by NAFA since 2006.

Participated in art workshops like ‘Experiment in Watercolor’, International Watercolor Society (IWS) Nepal, Conservation Art Tour 2070 by National Trust for Nature Conservation (ACAP) in Kaski, NCELL Kalajatra by Kathmandu Contemporary Art Center, ‘Federal Life’ workshop & exhibition by UNDP and Kathmandu University, CRACK International Art Camp in Bangladesh, ‘Techne’ kala’: enriching art practices through research by Lasanaa, Collaborative art workshop and research by Bindu space for artists’, Running with cameras’ video-art workshop by Sutra.

In the words of Visual Artist Ishan Pariyar , "I prefer to work on social and environmental subjects.

As a human being, everyone is involved in the problematic situations and its consequence caused by unsound activities are affecting our surrounding.

Our situation has been changing due to irrational acts of human beings. To depict the idea of this consequences in the meaningful and symbolic way I have chosen ‘bitter guard’ as a motif and symbolic representation. Its structure and color inspired me to paint in a theme of “Tito Satya” (Bitter Reality).

In Nepali saying it reflects the bitterness, sense of unpleasantness and sourness of the life. Nowadays every term, every minutes and every each second are surrounding by bitter experiences. I use mountains, local images & objects as an icon to show my identity and the closeness to the environment I was been nurtured. So my paintings are the visual realization of my life."

"I was searching for a proper concept, notions, and ideas for my painting. I contemplate myself and focused on my subject to retell the intuitions about the impression and the nurture through I gain from my surroundings. Yet I remember and those nostalgic ideas and icons evoke my sense to depict the particular theme throughout some series of the paintings. As I was been searching the inspirations around me I realize and questioned myself as like who I am? & what I am and from where I am, In the process, I sort out some of my collections of photographs/sketches that tell the story in a sense visually my attachment with the locations and feelings that I felt. The significance is that those images got captured by my brains and I am always surrounded by the shadows of it. As I was going through my sketches and drawings to put out my ideas I got myself more encountered by my surroundings and the periphery. That’s my land always inspired me to move on and pushed me forward. My land ‘POKHARA’ where, I used to breathe, play and grow up with my childhood memories. So the objects like the water hyacinth and the lake, water boat, and the images of surroundings tell the visual story of my belongings and my presence. The dreams were always approaching me to create something and they are the source of inspirations. The facts of my paintings are the ups and downs of life compared with the visualizations of the surrounding." added by the immensely talented artist.
