This month’s cover feature is fashion, portrait, and beauty photographer based in New York City, Carl Fletcher Jr. See his Beads of Gold collection on page 10 and 11.

In this issue’s main feature Swanky Fashion and Beauty Magazine hit the town hall of Chester for Cheshire Fashion Week’s return for its inaugural summer show of 2023. We were delighted to be invited back this year as official press for the show. CHESTER FASHION WEEK RETURNS WITH SUMMER 2023 SHOW RUNWAY Cheshire Fashion Week brought hundreds of visitors to Chester Town Hall for its inaugural summer event.

Edited by LUCY MORRIS DESIGNERS HIT THE RUNWAY ONCE AGAIN AS CHESHIRE FASHION WEEK opened the doors once again for its inaugural summer event of 2023. In this year’s display, the organisers of the show decided to challenge both the purpose and the role of this fashion week by setting a theme on one of the most important and widely spoken about topics in the industry at the present time sustainability.

As the largest fashion event in the North, Chester’s Cheshire Fashion Week drew hundreds of fashion, heritage and sustainability enthusiasts joining in on the Chester Heritage Festival celebrations to celebrate the City’s decades of sustainable practices, ideas and stories.

Cheshire Fashion Week CEO / Organiser Claire Namukolo Cheshire Fashion Week CEO Claire Namukolo Raven said; “A big risk was taken by us to launch our summer shows in order to bring visitors to Chester and show Cheshire in a positive light by combining many elements that would be seen as polar opposites, such as fashion, heritage, community, history, and sustainability. There is a sense of inconsistency in displaying collections at glamorous fashion shows that were made in poverty and practices that are unsustainable. Therefore, we feel that we have played an important role and are setting an example. Our summer shows transformed the way fashion weeks are conducted by working with chains and sustainable designers who are not reliant on child labour and factories where clothing is produced in safe and fair conditions.

MEET THE PRESENTER SWM: Please introduce yourself to our readers and describe a little bit about yourself, and your journey to get to this point in your career.

‘CFW isn’t just your average show, it’s a highly fashionable spectacle!’

Lord Rosca aka Ross Buxton is a creative with a passion to be in front of people to sing, dance, and even making his very own clothes!

Ross started in the industry at the age of 17 - growing to new heights with positive vibes, energy and love!

RB: I am Ross Buxton by day, also known as Lord Rosca by night haha! I use these names for different roles within the creative industry, it always keeps it fun like I have another secret identity. All my life I have loved being creative and being in front of people to sing or dance, even making my own clothes. it wasn’t until 2018 I started to take singing seriously, creating my own music with producers. Soon as 2019 started I was asked to join an agency as they saw a lot of potential in me for presenting shows, asking questions for interviews with minor celebrities and filming for small fashion documentaries online. It has taken some time to get to this point in my career in the creative industry as covid did stop a lot of productions, but through that time I was lucky enough to be apart of magazine interviews and I started to interview models within the fashion world. This was one of my favourites because it showed such an insight in to what it’s really like to be a model but also who that model really is and what they like to do. How I describe me as a person, i’d like to think I am a lot of fun, energetic with a kind heart, but I hope my friends would describe me with words even nicer then that (fingers crossed). Although one of the important things about me is I believe in positive energy, where ever you go and what ever you’re doing, having a positive mind set brings better out comes.

SWM: What inspired you to pursue your passion in the creative industry? Was there a specific reason or person that inspired you?

RB: My inspiration to get into creative roles came from being a very sociable person, always wanting to make people happy, give them a lasting memory of myself. It was always important to me to always make sure I gave a good first impression. That said as a child I was always creative with music, designing clothes and wanting to present documentaries about anything and everything. I took Lambda exams at college when I was studying performance of the arts, the assessor told me I had something special, an aura where you couldn’t help but watch me perform. That was really amassing to hear when your 17 years old, which gave me a lot of confidence to go out and pursue roles within the creative industry later on.

SWM: In your opinion what is the hardest part of your job? and why?

RB: The hardest part about what i do is commanding the attention of the audience but also giving them the fun atmosphere back at the same time. Why you say? It takes a certain amount of energy, charm and sense of reading the room to know what you need to give out to get engaged, lively and most importantly happy people in your audience. Making sure everyone in front of me is having the best experience they could possibly ever have is my number one goal each time.

SWM: Share a secret! Can you give us an insight into any exciting projects that you have coming up, is there anything you can share with us on what is next?

RB: I can give you two secrets! next month I will attending a pod cast show as a guest, discussing up lifting queer love stories @queerlovestoriespodcast, to give a positive out look into the lgbtqia+ community. My other secret is i have been on the down low working with a new producer, recording and writing new music for an album. It’s been some time since I released anything new and I can’t wait to share it!

SWM: Tell us your highlights from the show, the designers you loved, the atmosphere, and why you love doing CFW. RB: This years CFW23 highlights for me was seeing the fashion become more urban with an exotic twist, lots of colour thrown in, more in your face, street style gender neutral clothing. it was captivating see the designers show case pieces that you can actually wear out and look like you should be on the cat walk. Everyone truly created such amazing artwork! However I had a couple of favourites, FKA (Formerly Known As) with their street style, glam gender neutral clothing, I ended up buying one of their outfits on the day, I adored it that much! Also HFS Designs with their sexy, dramatic silhouettes and only using shades to create this. The atmosphere was beamingly vibrant! The excitement in the air, everyone impatient to see what is about to walk down that cat walk. The days atmosphere for the entire event was an absolute buzzing vibe all on its own. There is many reasons why I adore doing CFW but my main reason is that it’s about being apart of something that is ever growing and the importance of how it helps showcase emerging talents who are wanting to make their mark in the fashion world.

It was my first time attending and covering Cheshire Fashion Week, and it did not disappoint! The challenge the organisers set of making the show meet a sustainablity clothing criteria, is to be hugely applauded - especially in a current time where fast fashion is often cheaper, at the expense of poor labour conditions, and using unsustainable materials from corporate giants who prefer to make a buck than the increase quality of their produce and further protect the planet for future generations. I should of course, pay hommage to the designers for taking on this sustainability approach and absolutely rocking out on the runway with intricate, otherworldly and quite simply breathtaking designs.

MEET THE INFLUENCER SWM: Please introduce yourself to our readers and describe a little bit about yourself, and your journey to get to this point in your career.

LM: I’m Lydia, a 30 year old fashion/lifestyle influencer with a passion for business and a go get it attitude! Starting with a fashion degree at university and working for Lafayette 148 in New York, which led to assisting the CEO of the company, I haven’t stopped since. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend a variety of fashion shows and lifestyle events, including Burberry Prorsum at London Fashion Week leading up to Cheshire Fashion Week and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

SWM: What inspired you to pursue your passion in the creative industry? Was there a specific reason or person that inspired you?

LM: Whilst working in New York City for Lafayette 148, the whole world of fashion and business was thrust upon me almost overnight. I adapted quickly and by doing so, became immersed in an industry that was fast paced, exciting and opportunity giving all at once. The ‘little girl in the big city’ saying couldn’t have been more true and I wanted more. I worked hard, I made connections and I’m now fortunate enough to work for myself, run my own business and build my creative portfolio all at the same time.

SWM: In your opinion, what is the hardest part of your job? and why?

LM: The hardest part of my job would probably be the work-life balance. When work is always on my mind (enjoyably so) I find it hard to switch off. I’m always thinking of my next email, checking event schedules, scrolling Instagram for connections and inspiration, and then you realise you’re sat at the dinner table supposed to be enjoying a family dinner. The balance is hard to manage, but when you love what you do - is it really work?

SWM: Share a secret! Can you give us an insight into any exciting projects that you have coming up, is there anything you can share with us on what is next?

LM: I’m currently working on a new project called ‘The Brunch Club’ - it is an exclusive social club for people to network, socialise and have fun in a luxurious and enjoyable environment. We have just rolled out our marketing campaign so you may very well see us around! This will encapsulate my influencer career aswell as my business mindset so to be able to merge the two is really quite something.

SWM: Tell us your highlights from the show, the designers you loved, the atmosphere, and why you love doing CFW. LM: Cheshire Fashion Week not only felt relevant and visually beautiful, it created an environment that exceeded a lot of my expectations. The presentation of the show, the brands that showed and the presence of ‘Oomph’ drinks on the day, really gave it that edge. I loved this show because I met some great people, made business connections on a personal note and also got to witness some beautiful clothing, my favourite brand being ‘FKA, Formerly Known As’ - I hope to attend the next one and watch this wonderful fashion week grow and grow.
