“Bright one,” they whispered, tales unfold, A seer, a witch, her story told.

Through Norse realms of ancient spell, She ventured forth, where prophecies dwell.

In houses, she danced with pleasing grace, Charming all with spells, a captivating embrace.

Wand carrier, a Völva’s sacred name, In magic’s dance, she found her claim.

Banned by the Church, staffs, and wands, Her power feared in distant lands.

Wicked women sought her favor, In the weave of magic, she was their savior.

A Völva’s touch, a mystical hand, Navigating realms, both sea and land.

Spiritual leader, healer true, In Viking’s heart, her presence grew.

Seidkona, witch of ancient rhyme, Prophesizing futures in fleeting time.

Visionary journeys, a shapeshifter’s guise, A Völva’s craft, beneath northern skies.

Trance and song, spirits beckoned near, A dance of magic, the world held dear.

In the tapestry of runes, her wisdom spoke, A perilous journey, every trance invoked.

For death and wrath, an ever-present thread, Yet, through the veil, she fearlessly tread.

In Viking echoes, a legacy spun, The Völva’s dance, forever sung.

Between mysticism and societal gaze, A powerful figure, in an ancient haze.

A Völva, in old Norse, is a Seeress, akin to someone practicing shamanism or witchcraft. Predecessors of medieval witches, Völvas were magical practitioners with deep ties to their society. The term “Völva” may even derive from “staff” or “wand carrier,” emphasizing the significance of their magical tools. The use of staffs and wands in magic was banned by the Church, reflecting the fear and animosity towards the magical practices of the Völva. Magic was punishable by death, and the people feared the Völva’s power and knowledge, often leading to a precarious existence.

In Viking society, a Völva held a unique role, often serving as a spiritual leader or healer. A Norse witch is also called a Seidkona, specifically denoting a female who prophesizes. A Völva’s intricate magical practices involved visionary journeying, shapeshifting, prophesizing, and rune reading. She could enter a trance, communicate with spirits, and sing songs to attract them during rituals. However, the dangers of practicing magic and traversing dimensions could lead to a short and perilous life. A Völva’s prophecies, even if accurate, could also incur the wrath of her own clan.

In essence, the Völva embodied a powerful figure in Norse society, navigating the delicate balance between mysticism and societal acceptance, creating an intriguing legacy that transcends the Viking age.
