Lucy Morris Editor-in-chief Welcome to the Conker Nature September Issue - it’s great for you to join us at the beginning of the autumn season!

As the crisp air of September rolls in, we witness a magical transformation in the natural world. The autumn equinox heralds a time of change, with wildlife across the British Isles preparing for cooler months.

Our forests come alive with squirrels gathering acorns and nuts, while the sound of rutting deer echoes through the trees. The skies fill with migratory birds, as swallows and house martins prepare for their journey to Africa, and winter visitors like redwings and fieldfares arrive from Scandinavia.

September’s hedgerows offer a bounty of blackberries, rosehips, and hawthorn berries, providing food for birds and small mammals.

While many insects wind down, some, like the ivy bee, are at their peak. Butterflies such as the red admiral and painted lady can still be spotted on warm days.

As we witness this autumnal shift, we’re offered a unique opportunity to observe wildlife adapting to changing seasons with remarkable resilience and beauty. So, dear readers, I encourage you to step outside, breathe in the autumn air, and immerse yourselves in the wonders of wildlife this September.

Whether it’s a leisurely stroll through the vibrant autumn woods, an educational visit to a local nature reserve teeming with seasonal activity, or simply taking a moment to observe the subtle changes unfolding in your own backyard, there’s an entire world of natural wonders waiting to be explored and appreciated.
