Nether Hall Care Home seeks Christmas Raffle Prizes Nether Hall Care Home in Hartshorne is seeking Christmas Raffle prizes to raise funds for the benefit of residents. The 36 bed care home provides nursing, residential, day care, early stage dementia, physically disabled and palliative care.

Funds raised go towards a programme of social and wellbeing activities to keep residents fit, active and stimulated.

Swad History From Magic Lanterns to Multiplexes

A new book by Magic Attic volunteer, John Redfern, traces the history of cinema in Swadlincote from the days when travelling showmen first brought moving pictures to the town to the large Odeon Cinema that now stands on the Pipeyard development.

Articles and posters regarding what can only be described as the town's first permanent picture house, Swadlincote Hippodrome, are contained in the book. The Hippodrome, which operated between 1900 and 1911, was a canvas and wood structure erected in the area close to where the Poundstretcher car park is now.

John, describes how, following the 1910 Cinematograph Act, cinemas were required to be housed in more fireproof structures causing the demise of the Hippodrome and bringing about the new Empire theatre in West Street that opened in 1912. Shortly after this part of the Rink on Bank Passage was partitioned off to form The Alexandra Palace of Varieties.

When sound was added to the films the cinema became so popular larger buildings were required to cater for the growing audiences. The single storey Empire was replaced by a much larger structure and, in 1933, the elaborate Majestic Super Cinema was opened on Alexandra Road.

The Majestic went on to host live shows, pantomimes and even circus acts. Both the Empire and the Majestic were eventually managed by John Avery who went on to become the manager of the London Palladium.

'From Magic Lanterns to Multiplexes' (A History of the Cinemas in Swadlincote) contains over 60 photographs of buildings and staff relating to the town's cinemas.

The book is available from the Magic Attic, which at ÂŁ6.50, makes an ideal Christmas gift for those interested in local history or cinema.

Annie Maison is the latest brand to hit the high street by storm, built upon solid foundations from an ever-growing online customer base where customers feel inspired by the design of the unique furniture and homeware Annie Maison has to offer.

Owners and childhood sweethearts Luke Churchley and Lyndsey Griffiths named the new venture after their daughter Annie. Annie Maison, or as its English translation ‘Annie’s House’, was founded through their love and passion for sourcing unique and individual items of furniture and decorative items during the redesign of their own home.

Having launched the Annie Maison website at the beginning of this year it soon became apparent that shoppers, who enjoyed the same desire for their collection of vintage, shabby chic and designer products, wanted the security and the personal experience that a physical shop brings. Luke and Lyndsey decided to bring Annie Maison to the High Street but they didn’t just want customers to walk in, shop and walk out, they wanted people to be able to enjoy, feel and experience the items on sale and come back time and time again.

By blending the shopping experience with a café experience means Annie Maison is so much more than a coffee shop. It’s a cosy homely yet stylish gallery that gives you the perfect opportunity to try before you buy. From the chairs you’re sitting on to the tables you’re sitting at, to the decorative displays adorning the walls, on the shelves and on the floor, it’s all for sale. It’s the perfect opportunity to visualise what that lamp or that ornament looks like, it’s the perfect opportunity to test what the craftmanship of the chairs, the tables, the bookshelves and occasional items feel like.

Your Health For many people Christmas is a time of joy, full of family, full of giving, full of cheer, for some it can be a very challenging time. Whatever your situation is, make sure you make some time to plan what you need to get you through the Christmas period and beyond. Here are some ideas that have helped other people and could help you: ‘Empty Chair’ – missing a loved one through bereavement, regardless of how long ago, is always hard. Setting a place at the table with a memorable item of the person you’re missing could be a good way to remember them. For a more recent bereavement, creating a memory tree with friends and family on the day, is a lovely way to remember loved ones and gives you something to cherish beyond the big day.

Loneliness – being lonely at Christmas can be as difficult if you’re on your own as it could be in a family environment. There’s no right or wrong way to feel, but acceptance of your feelings is a good start to knowing what to do about it. Above all, choose to do something that makes you feel good

yourself. Use this day to treat yourself well, take time out if you need it or choose to do something completely different.

Relationships – set realistic expectations. If you’re planning to spend Christmas with certain members of the family that bicker throughout the year, they will probably do so at Christmas too. So avoid known triggers, use relaxation techniques to help cope with anxiety or tension or plan to do something so there’s little time left for negative reactions.

Stress – If you’re under stress through work or other worries, forget about the Christmas hype and keep things sensible and manageable. Create a realistic list of what needs to be done, delegate tasks where you can, look after yourself first and foremost by eating healthily, keeping hydrated, getting some exercise and sleeping well.

However you choose to spend Christmas this year, if things don’t quite go to plan try not to worry about it. It is after all, just another day.

Your Kitchen Get into the spirit of Christmas with a bit of home baking. There’s no easier recipe than the nation’s favourite mince pie or an alternative apricot one!

Ingredients 225g (8 oz) plain flour 125g (4½ oz) unsalted butter, diced 2 tablespoons caster sugar 1 large egg, beaten 350g (12 oz) mincemeat

into a food processor and process until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Slowly add the egg.

Bring the mixture together with your hands.

Wrap in clingfilm and chill for an hour.

Lightly grease a 12 cup muffin tray and place the mincemeat in a bowl. Give a good stir to ensure ingredients are evenly mixed.

Preheat your oven to 200 C/Gas Mark 6.

Roll out the pastry onto a floured surface to a thickness of a £1 coin.

Cut out circles with a pastry cutter large enough to fill the cases of your muffin tin and press gently into each case. Fill evenly with mincemeat Cut out slightly smaller circles for the pie lids or, to be more decorative cut out different shapes, and place on top of the mincemeat.

Press the edges together with a fork. If using small circles, cut a small steam hole in the top of each one. Brush gently with milk.

Bake in the oven for 20 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

Best served warm dusted with icing sugar or a dollop of whipped cream!

If you are not a fan of mince pies, why try a different fruit filling. These apricot pies are delicious!!

• Halve and stone 500g fresh apricots and cut into 1cm pieces.

• Melt 25g unsalted butter in a deep saucepan,

add the diced apricot with 75g caster and simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally until the fruit is tender and most of the liquid has evaporated.

• Take off the heat. Cool mixture before chilling for 30 minutes. Once chilled, continue as before, by filling the pastry lined muffin cases.

• Top with your pastry lid and bake for 20 minutes until golden brown. Cool.

Your Pets Christmas and pets brings back a memory of some 20 years ago when my mother-in-law put out some turkey scraps for the birds in rural Wales. Unaware of this, we let out our one year old black & tan pup, Sassy, into the garden to do her business. She obviously found it because the following day, Boxing Day, we were out driving and the whole lot came out on my lap and in the side pocket of the car door complete with undigested strands of bacon rind. It’s funny how these memories stay with you….

What’s not so funny is that Christmas can be a stressful and hazardous time for your pets. From foods, to decorations, gifts for your pet and the outdoor temperatures. Here’s a quick guide on safety for your pets.

• Keep the cables from Christmas tree lights out

• Chocolate, mince pies, Christmas pudding,

onion gravy and alcohol are among the festive foods that can be poisonous to pets. Bones from carcasses can also be a dangerous choking hazard.

• Christmas trees and other decorations can be hazardous too. Household plants and foliage such as poinsettias, holly, ivy, mistletoe and lilies can be toxic, so should be avoided if you have pets.

• Make sure your Christmas tree stands firm and can’t topple over easily. Not only do cats like to climb them, bouncy dogs and waggly tails can have serious consequences.

• Choose Christmas decorations that are labelled non toxic and refrain from using edible decorations as they can be sniffed out and pulled down.

While there are so many gorgeous gifts available for pets these days but do make sure they’re labelled non-toxic. Stay away from rawhide chews, as the treatment of these includes chemicals and preservatives that are toxic for any pets. They can also cause choking or obstruction.

Be careful of the cold ground on your pet’s paws. Avoid walking over frosty grass and look out for salt grit, which can cause dermatitis.

Do also take extra care with when de-icing your car this Christmas. Antifreeze is highly toxic for all cats and dogs.

There’s bound to be more fireworks over the New Year which can be a source of anxiety to many of our pets. As always, create a calm environment for your pet, offering them a hideaway place where they can feel safe. Keep your curtains and blinds closed and turn on the TV or radio to help distract them from the noises outside.
