Volunteers Week, 1-7 June 2019

New Pub in Belmont Street

Volunteer’s Week is a national initiative to say thank you to the millions of volunteers across the UK.

Bodell’s, the new pub on Belmont Street in Swadlincote will be opening it’s doors at 3pm on Thursday 16th May with a wide variety of real cask ales, ciders and perries on offer as well as a selection of craft beers through 8 hand pumps and over 8 draught lines! Stocking a wide variety of gins, spirits, wine and soft drinks there is definitely something for everyone.

New Carpet Shop on the High Street The Swadlincote Carpet Centre officially opened its doors on Monday 8th April with a great selection of carpets, vinyls and wood flooring on offer.

In the process of helping others, volunteering is shown to improve wellbeing and helps individuals gain new skills, experiences as well as confidence.

In the UK, the annual value of volunteering is estimated to be worth around £22.6 billion. Last year, around 20.1 million people in the UK volunteered formally at least once a year. That’s more than one third of the population. 11.8 million volunteer at least once a month.

The South Derbyshire CVS is the central hub for all volunteering activities in South Derbyshire and home to the Volunteer Centre. This year, anyone who volunteers in South Derbyshire is invited to the Volunteers’ Week Summer Party at Ticknall Village Hall on Friday 7 June 2019 from 6-9pm.

Sue Ryder’s new store in the Pipeworks Sue Ryder also opened its doors last month with a fabulous display of nearly new clothing, footwear, homewares and furniture. Supporting people through the most difficult times of their lives, whether that’s a terminal illness, the loss of a loved one or a neurological condition, the funds raised by the Sue Ryder stores is vital to keep the services going.

The Swadlincote store is still looking for volunteers to help run the store and will collect unwanted furniture for free. Pop in to the shop or call 01283 224534 for more information.

YHA National Forest Open Day & Dog Show: Saturday 18th May 2019, 10am—4pm With music provided by Gareth Haywood, there will also be a host of stalls from local crafters, businesses and charities as well as a bouncy castle and food stalls. There’s also a dog how hosted by Stan’s Pals with prizes for pooches with the waggiest tail, best trick, best behaved and more.

Proceeds from this event going to the YHA Breaks Charity, that broaden the horizons of children and families with the most challenging lives by providing them with life changing experiences.

SWADStyle Easter Fun on The Delph Last month SwadStyle organised the Easter Fun Day on The Delph. Blessed with wonderfully warm weather there was an Easter Egg Hunt, a Bouncy Castle from Bounce Bounce Bounce, Arts & Crafts with Alpine Arty Attic, Hook-a-Duck, Mindfulness with Alison Gardner, Animal Encounters with Stan’s Pals, a kickboxing demonstration from Crown Kickboxing and an appearance from Pomo the Penguin from Swadlincote Snowsports Centre.

Thank you to businesses for supporting the Easter Egg Hunt with particular thanks to the Swadlincote Snowsports Centre for donating a Snowsport Experience for 4 people which was won by Millie Pugh, 2nd and 3rd prizes were won by Rosie Rudge and Kellan. Thank you also to South Derbyshire District Council for their support through the loan of equipment on the day.

And a big thank you to the volunteers who helped on the day. You were wonderful.

Swadlincote Festival of Transport On Sunday 12th May 2019 Swadlincote town centre will be over-run with vehicles of every shape and size as part of the Festival of Transport, the annual celebration of Swadlincote’s transport and motoring heritage.

Together with the vehicles on display there will also be plenty of stalls, attractions and live music as well as singing and dancing. Visitors to the event can expect to see vintage cars, classic cars, souped-up cars, ex-military vehicles, old buses, trucks, tractors, motorbikes and more. Visitor entry to the Festival is free. The day starts at 10.00am and finishes at 4.00pm.

The highlight for this year will be the new Swad Loop Soapbox Derby where you will be able to watch various teams battle the slope, chicanes and obstacles down Hill Street in their homemade soap boxes to win the coveted prizes. Will it be our local constabulary, Swadlincote Snowsport Centre or one of our Scout Groups that wins 1st prize or one of the many other teams that have entered? The races will start at 11.00am with prizes on offer including: ⚫ Fastest single time on the day (Senior & Junior) ⚫ Best Turned Out Soap Box and Crew ⚫ Overall Fastest Team ⚫ Best Novelty Soap Box ⚫ Best Amateur Build ⚫ Most Enthusiastic Junior Racer ⚫ Wheel Chair & Motability Scooter Fun Race This is one of the largest events in the year with everyone taking part. Magic Attic will be open with an operational Thomas the Tank Track featuring

the Swad Loop and there will be a display in the Conference Centre at Sharpe’s Pottery Museum as well as cars on display. Word has it that there will even be a famous British stock car coming along.

As a registered a registered charity, funds raised through sponsorship, from the vehicle and stall applications, soap box entries and donations are used to cover the costs of the event with excess funds distributed to local causes. Last year the Bus Stop Cafe, Gresley Youth Band, Gresley Scout Group, Goseley Activity Provision, Shoutout and a number of individuals who applied for funding to further education all received a donation.

The National Forest Walking Festival

While walks in the National Forest can be enjoyed at any time of year, for two weeks in May there are almost 100 scheduled walks to join and plenty of walking related activities on offer.

This is, of course, the annual National Forest Walking Festival. Covering the 200 square mile National Forest, the guided walks cover distances of 1-14 miles and cater for wheelchairs, pushchairs, health walkers and ramblers with a number of new specialist photography walks planned too. Most of the scheduled walks are free and are graded for difficulty. Most walk leaders are volunteers and all those taking part in a walk do so at their own risk.

The creation of the National Forest has opened up more than three times the amount of land that was previously available and, with each step, you can explore vibrant young woodlands, nature-rich ancient forests, historic towns and villages, waterways and by-ways and plenty of countryside.

Business News Independent retail growth in this day and age is an enormous feat, particularly with the fierce competition in the online retail market. Stan’s Pals, a relative newcomer to the Swad High Street having first opened its doors in 2015, is doing just that.

Since its move in October last year to the other side of The Delph, Stan’s Pals have expanded their range of pet foods and products to include wild birds and small animals. Did you know Stan’s Pals even stocks hedgehog food?

It was this latest development that lead to the rebranding of the store with a new logo and a new website that is launching later this month.

Another secret to their success is the training and development of staff and, in return, the dedication and commitment all the staff have for the animals that come into their care, whether for a groom, for a walk, for pet sitting or even for advice in the shop. The staff will often go over and above the call of duty for their feathered or furry friends.

A new ‘Team Member of the Month’ programme has recently been implemented with rewards for members of the team in recognition for their outstanding efforts. Customers are encouraged to complete a nomination form every time they receive outstanding help or assistance.

And there’s still more on the way. Tina Holmes, owner of Stan’s Pals, comments ‘The team and I are absolutely passionate about animals. As well as enhancing the customer experience with good service, great products and helpful advice, we are planning to introduce educational opportunities with animal encounters of a different kind. But we can only do all of these things as a result of working with a great team”.

The Art of Photography

Photographer, David Gough, explains the fundamentals of photography.

For most people, the purchase of a new camera is a desire to take better photos. For many, understanding how their camera works or why their photographs are not as good as they thought they would be is a familiar theme.

Fundamentally, photography consists of seeing something of interest and recording it on a camera. This requires two different skill sets. ⚫ An ability to see as a camera sees; and ⚫ An understanding of the camera and its limitations Without an appreciation of these two skills a person will see something of interest and take a photo, expecting the camera to see that subject in the same way.

An example of this is a beautiful sunset. Typically, the photograph of the sunset is a poor representation of what the viewer

actually saw. Other examples are snow scenes, night scenes, beach scenes…the list goes on.

There is a third skill, which in former times took place in a darkroom and now, in the digital age, takes place on a computer (or in a phone app). That is the ability to process the photograph to get the best out of it.

It is here where those lovely sunsets you see in magazines, and you failed to get with your snapshot, are created. There are varying degrees of this kind of processing, ranging from a simple click on the “enhance” button in the software that came with your camera, through to more fancy things that need programmes such as Photoshop to accomplish.

Swad History Past industries in South Derbyshire tended to centre around the production of clay products and coal mining along with the trades that were allied to them.

Although they were in full flow in the late 1940’s, it seemed that the area might also become a centre for producing motor vehicles.

Towards the end of 1947 Sam Underwood and William Hudson, who were employed at the local garage of R. W. Kenny Ltd, decided to create their own company repairing and selling second-hand motor cars and eventually building a car of their own design. Sam was a first-rate mechanic and engineer and William was a retired policeman who had become employed as a car salesman. When they departed Kenny’s, they took several of the workforce with them.

They set up business as Paramount Motors in the former Curry’s garage in Swadlincote’s High Street. With no shortage of second-hand cars, many of which surviving the 2nd World War and many owners only too pleased to off-load them. Hudson and Underwood’s team of mechanics worked flat out on these vehicles to supply a thriving used car market.

In May 1948, a second company was formed to build vehicles. In January 1950 the Burton Mail ran a report about a Swadlincote firm’s new sportscar. ‘The Motor’ magazine of the same month also stated that “A Derbyshire concern plans an attractive addition to a range of low-priced sports cars.”

The De-Luxe Coupe cost just over £735 and the Roadster just over £637. A Sharrock’s supercharger could be fitted to either model at an extra cost of £75.

The main production of the cars took place in buildings belonging to Bretby Art Pottery and other

parts were produced in Swadlincote and Melbourne.

There have been numerous reports as to how many vehicles were turned out in South Derbyshire, but most say 10 or less.

Following the demise of the Paramount Motors company, an operation began again Camden Motors in Leighton Buzzard in 1952 where around a further 65 cars were produced.
