About SwadStyle SwadStyle is the culmination of many ideas borne from a thirst for knowledge, the desire to support local businesses, a love for community and a concept that is well respected up and down the country.

Having travelled back and forth between Swadlincote and London every other weekend for the last three years I was acutely aware that there was more to Swadlincote than I was seeing, hearing or reading about. While there are plenty of resources that you can tap into, the one resource that I have had more than 20 years experience with, in one way or another, is the community lifestyle magazine that comes through the door.

The magazine that is full of local information, places to go, things to do, the resource to find local suppliers for the important things to do with your health, your home, your happiness and more.

As a community magazine, everyone is welcome to contribute to SwadStyle.

Please get in touch if you have a story to tell, an event to share, community news, a business to promote or would like to contribute an article in any one of the regular features or even a new one.

Since moving to the area permanently earlier this year, the idea of bringing to life a local lifestyle magazine for Swadlincote became stronger. It would be the perfect way to meet new people, to find out what’s going on locally, to explore new places, to share the wonderful things that are on our doorstep and combine all the things I am passionate about through a fresh pair of eyes.

I am not disappointed. Swadlincote is full of friendly people. It has some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces, an abundance of places to explore, a wonderful range of old family businesses through to new start ups offering a fantastic range of products and services for a town of its size. The more I look the more I find.

Each month I look forward to sharing the stories, the events, useful and relevant information - all for the single purpose of community.

The Origins of Halloween way to guising or mumming when children would offer songs, poetry or jokes instead of prayer in exchange for money or fruit.

In the 20th century guising gave way to tricks and pranks such as jumping out of bushes dressed as a zombie or spooking people in their sleep as ghosts in exchange for sweets hence where the term trick or treating came from. Today, while the tricks have all but disappeared, the celebrations continue with homes being decorated with scary decorations and carved pumpkins on display. For one evening only, usually between 4.308.30pm, children dressed in scary costumes are taken from house to house ‘trick or treating’, hoping to receive sweets from the houses they visit.

The practice of pumpkin carving, dressing up and trick or treating for Halloween dates back thousands of years ago during Celtic times.

During the Celtic farming festival ‘Samhain’, that marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, farmers believed there was a day when spirits would raise from their graves. Farmers would dress in disguise to fool the spirits, hoping to protect their land through the coming winter. Large bonfires were lit in villages to ward off the evil spirits and the glowing embers from the bonfires were used to light the hearth in each house to protect the people and keep them warm throughout the long dark winter ahead.

If you or your children are going to be out trick or treating this Halloween do please stay safe. Go to houses in well-lit areas that you know and make sure children are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Houses that are decorated and/or with carved pumpkins on display are generally homes that welcome trick or treating.

Throughout the centuries the rituals were adapted to meet new or changed beliefs.

In the eighth century November 1st was declared to be the feast of All Saint’s Day and the night before became known as All Hollow’s Eve. Children and poor people would practice ‘souling’ where they went from door to door asking for donations or food in exchange for prayers honouring the person who answered the door. They were usually dressed as angels, demons or saints. In the 19th century, souling gave 6

There are workshops, ghost hunts and a museum mystery night at Sharpes Pottery Museum while the Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre will be holding their own Halloween Craft & Slide Fun Day.

Rosliston Forestry Centre will be helping Dr Frankenstein build his own monster friend and teaching him how to behave at Halloween Parties. They’ll be looking for you to join them.

Stan’s Pals Doggie Deli calls for Purple Poppies In memory of the animal victims of war, Stan’s Pals Doggie Deli will be putting on a display of purple poppies in The Delph. Locals are invited to take part by helping to produce knitted, crocheted or sewn poppies. Simply take your completed poppies to Stan’s Pals before the end of October. They have a limited stock of poppy making kits which can be purchased for £1 with proceeds going to the Swadlincote poppy appeal. There’s also a poppy pattern, kindly provided by Viv Toon, available via Stan’s Pals facebook page.

Red Poppy Collection Station @ Curly Magpie & Friends If you are making Red Poppies, Curly Magpie & Friends are the collection station for the British Legion. Simply take your completed poppies to the store at 61-63 High Street, Swadlincote.

Bingo & Hoy for all at the Church Gresley Community Centre Make new friends, win prizes, enjoy good food & refreshments and have some fun at the Church Gresley Community Centre on Church Street (located across the road from St George & St Mary’s Church). Free Lifesaving Session with St John Ambulance As part of the 2018 Restart a Heart campaign, St John Ambulance will be holding a free lifesaving session at the Gresley Old Hall at 7.30pm on 17th October 2018. The session is open to anyone over the age of 7. Learn how to save a life.

The Angel of Swad

It may have had a chequered history but there’s no resemblance today. The doors of The Angel Restaurant & Bar have reopened as a charming, elegant, yet understated restaurant with a menu that is anything but.

Swing round to Swadlincote’s new golf course

Exactly one mile from Swadlincote’s town centre is an oasis of calm and tranquillity with an abundance of wildlife and wild flowers. Oh, and it is also home to Swadlincote’s first ever 9-hole golf course.

The Swadlincote Lake Course is part of the Swadlincote Family Golf Centre located on William Nadin Way (A514).

Set within in a gently undulating landscape with the lake at its centre, the course has generous fairways, well positioned rough and greens with some challenging holes to test the skills of both the beginner as well as the more experienced player.

The lake at the heart of the course is home to nesting swans, geese, moor hens, coots, buzzards plus lots of other wildlife.

Operated by N1 Golf, the Swadlincote Family Golf Centre is open to players of all ages and abilities and you do not need to a member to play. It is the perfect venue for people wishing to learn or improve their game.

On a pay and play basis, you can take advantage of the introductory rate of £5.00 per person for the 9 hole Lake Course.

Clubs are available to also hire so there is no excuse not to give the course a try.

Together with Footgolf, a floodlit 15 bay Driving Range and coming soon a Family Par 3 Short Course there are plenty of options. If you have never heard of Footgolf, it is an addictive game where the golf ball is replaced with a football and the clubs are replaced with your feet. The aim of the game is to get the ball into the hole using your feet in the fewest number of shots possible. It is a lot of fun and all ages can compete against each other.

For anyone wanting to learn golf or sharpen their game the Golf Centre will be offering individual, group, senior, ladies and junior lessons. The friendly centre staff are more than happy to give you further information if you are interested.

Swad History Memories of Midland Road by Graham Nutt The two colour images displayed show views from the Delph towards Midland Road that will no doubt evoke many memories for ‘Swaddies’ of a certain age. Taken in the early 1950’s, these images are from the vast collection of over 28,000 local photographs held at the Magic Attic archive.

Dytham’s ice cream trailer is parked in front of the Market Hall and the two youngsters to the right of it appear to have each been treated to an ice cream cornet.

Mr Ellis is open for business selling tobacco and cigarettes under the ‘lean to’ structure known locally as the Shambles, alongside the hall. He would also serve up cups of tea in the covered premises next to his shop.

Further down, Harry Burnton in a white shirt, has an array of clothing for sale. He was always quick to spot an opportunity in the

fashion market and during the ‘Teddy Boy’ era of the late 1950s supplied Edwardian styled jackets trimmed with velvet, drainpipe trousers and other items.

The Bedford lorry belonged to the Harrison sisters who ran the fruit and vegetable market stall on the Delph. It was not uncommon, when they unloaded their truck, to see one or more of them heave a large sack of potatoes on each shoulder and take them to their pitch. Beyond the lorry is a red telephone kiosk standing next to the local council offices. These opened in 1902.

Before that date the council ran their affairs from premises in Coppice Side.

In the other image, the 704 Midland red double decker bus is heading out of town to make its way to Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Further down the road is a large black car, possibly an Austin 16 hp, that is likely to have been a taxi belonging to Norman Brown of Newhall.

SWADStyle Beyond this can be seen the kilns belonging to Ault’s Pottery who produced wares that are very collectable today.

A triangular section of brickwork over an archway can be seen just below the Shambles on each photograph. The building it graced eventually became the public toilets. It was originally the town’s earliest fire station and was built to house Swadlincote’s original horse drawn fire pump, donated to the community by the local businessman, John Hall JP, in the late 1800’s.

It is a little ironic that following the demise of the Darklands Road Fire Station premises, a new headquarters was built just a stones throw away further down the road. Having been recently demolished, we are now witnessing the building of a new structure on the same site to house the emergency services.

Your Kitchen

While we’re getting ready to carve our pumpkins have you ever wondered what to do with the left overs?

2. Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes until the vegetables have softened 3. Bring the potato and water to boil in a saucepan and add the stock cubes. Simmer until the potato is soft.

4. Add the potato in stock with the roasted vegetables to a liquidiser or food processor and puree until smooth.

5. Return to the pan and over a low heat stir in the most of the cream, nutmeg and pepper. Heat gently and serve.

6. Swirl the remaining cream in the bowl and sprinkle with chopped chives.

Not only is pumpkin a delicious vegetable, it is full of vitamin A and vitamin E, as well as B-vitamins, including folates, niacin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), thiamin and pantothenic acid.

Their seeds are also an excellent source of nutrition with high levels of iron, selenium, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids.

Before you throw your leftovers away, why not try some of these tasty recipes:

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Method 1. Scrape out the seeds from your pumpkin with a spoon and clean thoroughly, removing any fleshy bits.

2. Rinse the seeds and pat dry 3. Spread seeds over a baking tray and drizzle over melted butter or your choice of sunflower or olive oil 4. Sprinkle with the seasoning of your

Pumpkin Soup 750g pumpkin, peeled, seeded and cubed 2 carrots, coarsely chopped 2 onions, cut into wedges 2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 large potato, sliced 1 litre water 2 or 3 cubes chicken stock, crumbled 250ml double cream 1 1/4 tablespoons ground nutmeg, or to taste 1 teaspoon ground black pepper salt to taste Chopped chives

Method 1. Place the pumpkin, chopped carrots and onions in a roasting tray and drizzle with olive oil.

5. Mix well so your seeds are evenly covered with seasoning and spread out 6. Roast in a preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown, taking care to stir the seeds from time to time to promote even browning.

Pumpkin Mash 1.2 kg pumpkin, peeled, seeded and chopped coarsely 40g butter, chopped 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh chives salt and freshly ground black pepper Nutmeg Method 1. Steam or microwave the pumpkin until tender and drain well.

2. Mash the pumpkin and butter in a large bowl until smooth.

3. Stir in chopped chives 4. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

5. Sprinkle or grate a little nutmeg over the top of the pumpkin mash and serve.

Pumpkin Risotto 4 cups (1L) vegetable stock 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 300g diced pumpkin or butternut squash, skin removed 1/4 cup (60ml) dry white wine 1 cup (175g) arborio rice 1-2 tablespoons butter 1/3 cup (30g) parmesan cheese

3. Cook until the wine has reduced and add the arborio rice and stir for 1-2 minutes.

4. Cover the rice and pumpkin with the vegetable stock. As soon as the rice begins to dry out, add a ladle of stock. Keep adding stock a little at a time until the desired consistency has been reached. The rice should be a little on the al dente side (firm to bite) 5. Remove from heat, stir in the butter and the parmesan cheese.

6. Serve immediately.

Hint: Add fried pancetta or bacon bits to the recipe for added flavour & texture

Pumpkin Scones 2 1/2 cups self-raising flour 1 cup pureed pumpkin 55 g butter 1 egg 1/2 cup sugar 125ml milk Method 1. Beat butter until soft and add sugar.

2. Mix in the pumpkin and the egg.

3. Add milk and mix well.

4. Slowly add the flour and mix into a dough.

5. Turn dough onto a floured board and knead lightly 6. Roll out and cut dough into small circles.

7. Place close together onto a greased tray.

8. Brush the tops with milk for a golden top 9. Bake at 200C for 15 minutes.

Method 1. Add olive oil to a heavy-based frying pan and fry the chopped onion for 5-10 minutes over a low heat.

2. Add the diced pumpkin or butternut squash and continue to cook for 2-3 minutes before adding the white wine.

Your Health Are you eligible for the free Winter 2018/19 Flu Vaccination?

Influenza, or ‘Flu’ as it is more commonly known, is one of the most unpredictable viruses with new strains appearing on a regular basis. It’s a common but very infectious virus that can cause severe illness, particularly for the more vulnerable.

Every year, the viruses that are most likely to cause flu are identified in advance and the World Health Organisation recommends which type of flu virus strain to include in the vaccine.

The flu vaccine is currently the best protection against the unpredictable virus.

Studies have shown that the flu vaccine helps prevent people from getting the flu.

It won't stop all flu viruses and the level of protection may vary, so it's not a 100% guarantee. However, if you do get flu after vaccination it is likely to be milder and shorter-lived than it would otherwise have been.

For healthy individuals flu usually lasts around a week. For adults and children with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems the symptoms can be more severe and flu can last longer. This may also apply to people the age of 65 and people who are pregnant. Therefore it is important that people in these categories receive the flu vaccine every year.

You can get the flu vaccine from your GP and from local pharmacies offering the service. Dean & Smedley on West Street, Brennans Pharmacy on Darklands Road and Manor Pharmacy in Church Gresley all offer the flu vaccine.

Flu symptoms come on very quickly and can include: • Sudden fever – temperatures of 38C or above • Aching body • Feeling tired or exhausted • Dry, chesty cough • Sore throat • Headache • Difficulty sleeping • Loss of appetite • Diarrhoea or tummy pain • Nausea and being sick The symptoms are similar for children, but they can also get pain in their ear and appear less active.

If you are at all worried, consult your GP or call 111.

Your Garden Hanging Baskets

10 Tasks for October The days are most definitely shorter, the temperature is dropping and the trees are changing colour - it’s time to start preparing your garden for winter.

According to the RHS the top 10 things you should be doing in your gardening this October include: 1. Divide established rhubarb crowns to create new plants 2. Cut back perennials that have died down 3. Divide herbaceous perennials 4. Move tender plants into a greenhouse or conservatory 5. Plant out spring cabbages 6. Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts 7. Prune climbing roses 8. Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year 9. Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in mild areas 10. Renovate old lawns or create new grass areas by laying turf

It's also a good idea to give your hanging baskets some attention with a little deadheading, watering and feeding. This will keep them going until mid autumn.

Once they are past their best you could always replant with spring flowering bulbs, winter heathers, trailing ivies and spring flowering plants to create refreshed winter/spring hanging baskets.

Lasting Lawns The growth of grass begins to slow down in autumn so there's no need to mow so frequently. It's also time to raise the height of the cut. This will help the lawn to withstand the last of the warm, dry weather.

Apply an autumn lawn feed to harden up your lawn for winter. You could also improve the soil by applying a loam and sand top dressing and working it into the lawn with a stiff brush or the back of a garden rake. It's also a good time to create new lawns from turf or seed.

Shrubs and Trees October is a good time to plant and move shrubs without having to worry about their survival. You'll be giving them a good start for the following spring as they will have had all winter to settle in.

Prune late-summer flowering shrubs and give evergreen hedges a final trim ready for winter.

the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on (but not too loudly) in order to block out some of the noise of the fireworks.

Prepare a ‘den’ for your pet where it can feel safe and comfortable – perhaps under a bed with some of your old clothes. They may like to hide there when the fireworks start.

It’s not just Guy Fawkes where celebrations include fireworks. These days we now have Diwali, New Year’s Eve and let’s face it, any excuse if it’s dark enough.

But spare a thought for our furry and feathered friends. They are easily frightened and need to be treated with special care when fireworks are being let off.

Blue Cross advises that owners of rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, ferrets and birds should follow these precautions: Bring hutches/cages and enclosures into a quiet room indoors, or into a garage or shed.

Give your pet extra bedding to burrow into so it feels safe.

If you cannot bring your pet’s hutch inside, you should turn its enclosure around so that it faces a wall or fence instead of the open garden.

Cover aviaries or hutches with thick blankets or a duvet to block out the sight of the fireworks and deaden the sound of the bangs, but make sure there is enough ventilation.

Let your pet pace around, whine, miaow and hide in a corner if they want to. Do not try to coax them out – it’s just trying to find safety, and should not be disturbed.

Stay calm, act normally and give lots of praise for calm behaviour. It’s OK to cuddle and stroke your pet if it helps them relax, but if they prefer to hide under your bed, then let them do this instead.

Avoid leaving your pet home alone during such potentially upsetting events.

Don’t tie your dog up outside while fireworks are being let off, ie outside a shop while you pop inside, or leave them in the garden or in your car.

Never take your dog to a fireworks display.

Even if they don’t bark or whimper at the noise, it doesn’t mean they are happy.

Excessive panting and yawning can indicate that your dog is stressed.

If you are purchasing your own fireworks, please be aware there are laws concerning fireworks. Take a moment to consider the current guidelines at www.gov.uk/fireworksthe-law.
