Dante’s Inferno recounts faithfully the fi rst Cantica of the Divine Comedy, through a series of scenes inspired by the drawings of Gustave Doré. In the dark woods, Dante encounters Virgilio and initiates his journey through Hell with him. Dante’s Inferno is the fi rst 5-reel Italian fi lm and is considered one of the masterpieces of the costume drama genre, for which Italian producers created their fame in the 1910s. Its special cinematic and theatrical effects (over impression, the use of ropes and machineries for fl ying actors) make the fi lm a visionary work, where captions are used extensively and accurately for the fi rst time. The production took almost two years, employing hundreds of extras and huge three-dimensional sets, built in wood and plaster.
