01. A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRETE PREVIOUS STUDIES

The brief is about deign a pavilion to keep secrets on Herring island, Melbourne.

Responding to the unique environment in Herring island, the overall design is about the journeys of nding and experiencing. This project is intended to create an “approachable” yet somehow “unattainable” feeling when people try to hide their secretes from the others. The true secret can only be found by a few. Unique special qualities create intangible and changeable secrete spaces, which could be depicted and perceived differently through lights and shadows.

Repetitive geometry and lights and shadows are the strongest tectonics that I developed from my previous studies. Therefore, deriving from these studies, my nal deisgn was formed by the similar language.

Final Model

Perspective 1(Western Entry) The Western Entry is desinged to t two people at each time. In this entry, people will get to experience the opticle illusion mainly.

Perspective 3 (Underground) The underground space can only be entered from northern entry. Changable lighitng during the day will provide this space unique experiences. It is different any time people visit.

Perspective 2 (Southern Entry) This entry can only t one prson at each time. A beam of lights will be introduced in this space from the top.

LIgthting effects on Western Entry

The form of my pavillion are designed to spreadi out the whole site while invading to the underground. The whole projects connect the earth tightly with verticle relationships among above ground, on the ground and underground.

People can entry the centre of upperground from four directions with distinct spacial experience(“various ways to get to close to a secret”). However, only the northern entrance will actually lead to the underground(“only a few can actaully see”). People will have to wonder around to nd the entrance to the underground world, although the steps to the “secret” place is identible from all directions.

02. STUDLY PARK BOAT HOUSE CONCEPT DIAGRAMS

The proposed project is a replacement of the current boathouse located at Studley park, along the Yarra bend.

Formal dining Restaurant, café, kiosk and boathouse are also included in the brief intended to create a recreational space in the park.

This site embraces rich landscape with abundant vegetation and animals, while the existing boathouse is isolated from the signi cant landscape. In order to improve this situation, a concept of “blurry the boundary between architecture and nature” is promoted.

The majority of new proposed boathouse is buried under the ground.

No striking outline will be identi ed as it is surrounded by landscape and “grows” from the earth. Variuos types of openings are designed to bring different lighting effects in spaces, creating interesting changeable atmospheres.

To further richen the way visitors experience nature, circulations are designed to suggest people exploring from the hill, to the earth then ultimately touch the water.

Different types of nature including natural nature and constructed nature are highlighted in various spaces to creae distinct moments. Open courtyard in the center and void slits on the walls are designed, expecting people physically feel the actual wind and even rain of the nature.

03. NESTING

The design brief is to propose a new order, façade and column design for Northcote Townhall, the arts and community centre in Merri Creek area.

Driven inspiration from behaviours studies of the local ora (Common Everlasting Daisy) and fauna (Flame Robin) of Merri Creek, a new order is designed by us: nesting---when vigorous ame robin gathering and nesting around the burt bushes and nally calling it home. This order was given a new meaning that tightly connected with Merri Creek and its surroundings, becoming a resident who “grows” from Merri Creek rather than a foreigner. The whole design process of the project is a “form- nding” process through algorithm iterations and physical prototypes, based on parametric modelling and scripting.

The Column, is created as a nal realization of the “Nesting“ concept.

Not like the seperated layers of the facade which overlapping each other in a obvious way, the column merged two behaviours, two layers in a more subtle manner. The “birds” and thier “nests” eventually became a uni ed intergration.

Constructability

Natural system

The nal form was a balance between complexity and fabrication. Its dense discrete lines create clean geometries (rectangles or squares). Apart from aesthetic consideration, the most important selection criteria of this stage is its constructability. It is surprising that the algorithm nds its main structure by its own. There are dense and repeated polylines and geometry run through the column which can be identi ed as the structure. Then the other ne geometries and lines are regarded as the substructure which hold no weights from one another. This form was regarded as a better developed one as it is continuous grown from bottom to the top without any broken or slim sections like the others. This is fairly important as the structure can fail without a strong core. However, the nal form was also just a selection from the existing iterations that we had at the design stage. We are aware that these dense ne geometries will become a challenge for fabrication. Future development through evaluations and simpli cation will be taken.

3D PRINTING CONNECTION DESIGN Simple small connections joining elements from 8 directions to accomadate different locations. Intersection angles are designed to be 45 degrees joining the discrete geometry in design.

With the idea of constructing various types of models of different scales by simple repeatitive elements, connections which are 3d printed are also designed and tested to generate a strong, rm and seamless performance.

3D PRINTING CONNECTION DESIGN

After experiments and prototyping, all major componants of nal model are selected.

The nal model was nalizied through three stages which was gradualy re ned through density increasing and colour spraying. The model is spayed to be black for aethetic and structural propurse: to hide unclean nishes and strenghthen the cotton string.

Some problems also occured while assemblying, including inappropriate colour using for cotton strings. This could be rstly test during prototyping stage. Except from these, the whole fabrication process at this stage is fairly quick and smooth.

04.A u Rcadia ISSUES 1. The Site: • Lack of Greenery (dose not t into the surrounding temperament in Parkville) (Below left)

The design brief is to create a new learning complex, a sports centre and a general admin for University High School, which was located at the intersection of Royal Parade and Story street, Parkville.

“AuRCADIA” is a reinterpretation of the word “Arcadia”, which used to describe a poetic shaped space associated with bountiful natural splendor and harmony. My project, similarly, aims to design a space which is harmonious with the nature. Moreover, the world “AUR” equals to “OUR”, creating a sense of belonging to the project. Based on the site analysis, talks with the users and learning theory (constructivism), “AuRcadia” is designed to be “an environment which stimulates active learning through exploring and discovering, being away from busy and noisy city-life, yet with high interaction with nature”.

The anl form is shaped according to the trees planted. The locations of the trees are also adjusted according to the buildings and open space.
