D

o you like Indian food? If your answer is no then it’s because you haven’t eaten at Adyar Ananda Bhavan on 1st and 58th, an unassuming South Indian vegetarian gem in the heart of our neighborhood. The name means Big Happy Place and it certainly is once you taste the food.

Opened in 2013 by an Indian gentleman, Raju Perumal, it is family owned. The manager, Vanitha, attended to us and a whole room of hungry guests. My friend and I were the only two customers who were not Indian, proving just how authentic the food is.

Words fail me when I tell you how good it all was, but I’ll try.

We started with a glass of wine at $8.95. Very reasonable, right?

Then we ate — well. Medu Vada, fried lentil flour donuts, $10, Masala Cashew, fried spicy (not too spicy) cashew nuts, $10, Samosa Chaat, $17, samosa mixed with chana, onion, tamarind sauce and yogurt, and Cocktail Fried Idli, $14. At this point we were content from just the appetizers but we were excited to try more. Everything, and I mean everything, was so delicious.

We had dosas, which are flavor-filled pastries. We had Ooty Spring Dosa, a masala spread with bell pepper, carrot and cabbage, $18, and Cheese Masala Dosa, $18. I must not forget the Vegetable Biryani, basmati rice cooked with vegetables and spices, $16. I love Indian bread and you will too once you taste the Poori Set, $17, deep-fried unleavened puffy wheat bread with vegetable kurma and raita.

And, of course, we had to have the Palak Paneer, savory creamed spinach.

They have three wonderful desserts, $8 to $12, and we had all three. I won’t describe them.

Just remember to order all and you shall be transported to heaven. Adyar Ananda Bhavan will have you leaving more than happy.

arlings, do you like the summer? Do you look forward to sunny days and hot weather? Do you bloom like roses in the summer?

Well, good for you!

As much as we look forward to summer, no one likes to be in an unbearably hot house or apartment. Having lived a lot of my life without air conditioning, I’ve learned a few things about keeping an apartment cooler and bearable. Summer house rentals may not have A/C, so these tips may be especially helpful.

CLOCKWISE OR COUNTERCLOCKWISE?

Fans are a must for feeling cooler and keeping mosquitoes away.

These pests are poor flyers. Even moderate air current blowing around you will keep them away.

Ceiling fans can make a room feel up to 10 degrees cooler! In summer, the counterclockwise rotation pulls the cooler air up from the floor and creates circulation. Remember high school science? Cold air is heavier than hot air and sits lower to the floor.

All ceiling fans are adjustable to rotate clockwise for winter or counterclockwise for summer. Some have a switch on the fan. Some on the face of the remote or inside the battery compartment.

When the sun is shining directly into your windows, close the window coverings. Seems obvious, no? At night, open your windows to circulate air through your home. And keep that fan running!

Don’t use your oven. In hot weather, the microwave oven is your best friend. Use LED and fluorescent lighting.

The days of sleeping on the fire escape are long gone. Keep your bed cooler by using cotton, linen, Tencel, or bamboo sheets and pillowcases. Use these anyway, as they are natural fibers and are biodegradable. Put your mattress on the floor, if you have floor space.

Dehumidifiers work well, and there’s always the portable air conditioner option. Some provide double duty as portable heaters.

his summer marks a milestone I’m incredibly proud to celebrate: the five-year anniversary of Blue Line Dental. When I first envisioned opening a dental practice in the heart of Sutton Place, I knew I wanted to do more than just provide quality dental care — I wanted to redefine the dental experience altogether.

n the evening of June 9, the Beekman Place Association (BPA) celebrated its 45th year! Beekman Place board members and neighbors of the surrounding communities gathered at Ophelia Lounge atop The Beekman Tower.

Guests enjoyed delicious appetizers and wonderful drinks as they mingled with old friends and new ones. Together, everyone competed for silent auction items donated by local businesses and residents of the neighborhood. The highlight of the evening was mentalist Eli Morgan who performed tricks that blew everyone’s mind!

Jenn Gunsberger, co-president with her husband Ken Gunsberger, reiterated how important it is to bring the community together in support of a clean and safe neighborhood that so many of us enjoy.

t’s not every day you walk by a storefront packed with balloons, dance music, and toddlers jumping over hurdles like it’s field day. But at Zing! For Kids, high energy is the baseline.

Founded by longtime Upper East Sider Michele Levy, Zing! officially opened the doors to its brick-and-mortar studio on 90th and 1st this June, after years of operating as a pop-up across New York City, Long Island and Westchester. The concept is simple: get kids moving, help them build confidence, and let them leave class feeling amaZING. Levy has lived on the Upper East Side for about 11 years and has worked near the Upper East Side and Sutton Place for about 14 years. Prior to launching Zing! she held many different jobs, but has always been a fitness instructor, teaching a variety of classes to adults of all abilities.

When she started working in Manhattan, most of her classes were in the East 50s, where she amassed a large, loyal following teaching a variety of fitness classes at the former NYSC and her own branded class, Cardio Sweat Party. Creating a strong community and an inclusive fitness environment has always been important to her.

When she launched Zing!, she was blending years of fitness instruction with her love for child development, community, and play. Now that she has a toddler herself, 19-month-old Leo, the work hits even closer to home. “I see how our classes build confident children, and it’s the kind of program I want my own son in,” she says.

Zing! offers toddler-through-tween programming that includes fitness classes, parties, and special events that are all designed to spark joy, movement, and connection. Levy and her team of coaches bring the energy no matter the setting. It could be a structured fitness class, a birthday party with a DJ, or an outdoor sprinkler day in the summer. The goal is always the same: help kids feel confident, included, and celebrated.

For the youngest Zing! Stars, Levy watches them show up each week, conquer their fears like jumping over a hurdle, and carry that newfound confidence into everyday life by trying new things, believing they can go down the big-kid slide, and trusting in themselves.

What makes Zing! different is the personal connection. Levy remembers the names of kids’ favorite songs and books. Her coaches dress up for Halloween. Dance parties are part of the curriculum. And every new milestone, whether it’s jumping over a hurdle or speaking up in class, is treated like a big deal. “As a former shy kid, it’s really special to have spaces where all kids can feel awesome.”

Outside of the studio, Levy is a familiar face around the Upper East Side.

During our most regularly held tour, we covered neighborhood landmarks, celebrated residents, both past and present, and the history of former Avenue A, now Sutton Place.

out to Sutton Place after marrying Raizy in 2003. Their shared inspiration comes from the teachings of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, known as “The Rebbe,” whose message of spiritual connection and inclusivity has shaped their lives since childhood.

“We believe that all people are created with a divine spark,” says Rabbi Shmuel. “Beyond tolerance, we can all learn to develop a deep respect for the soul within ourselves and within everyone.”

That philosophy guides the programming, led by Raizy, at Chabad Sutton, which includes synagogue services, holiday celebrations, adult education, life cycle events, and full-time Preschool and Hebrew School offerings. During high holidays, they move into larger venues to meet growing demand from the community.

The Metzgers have six children, between the ages of 7 and 20, who are actively involved in the center. Their son Mendel, 19, lives with profound nonspeaking autism.

“Raising him has been a journey of love, heartbreak, challenge, and triumph,” says Raizy. “It’s opened us up to so many new ways of thinking.”

When time allows, the couple enjoys walking along the new esplanade. “The best parts of running Chabad Sutton are the wonderful neighbors and friends we’ve made.”

There are no membership fees or requirements to attend events. Chabad Sutton keeps its doors open to all, while offering a select program track for Chabad Club members who financially support the center. These supporters enjoy personalized events, lectures, and book selections throughout the year.

From weekday music and art classes to the annual “Bright Lights Big Menorah” celebration, Rabbi Shmuel says the goal is to help children build confidence in who they are. “One of our Hebrew School students wore his tallit and kippah for Spirit Day at PS 59. That kind of pride and self-assurance is exactly what we hope to instill.”

W

hen Lorenzo Carcaterra opens his terrace doors, he’s greeted by the kind of panoramic East River view that inspires a thousand first chapters. But the bestselling author and screenwriter isn’t searching for inspiration. He’s lived more stories than most people will ever read.

Carcaterra’s own story begins in Hell’s Kitchen and winds through the halls of The New York Daily News, where he rose from copy boy to reporter. When an editor dismissed his Three Stooges pitch, he wrote it "on spec," journalism shorthand for doing it without a promise of publication or payment. It ran in the entertainment section.

By 21, he was writing Sunday features. He later wrote about Italy for National Geographic Traveler for ten years on assignment and eventually transitioned into television. His five-season stint as managing editor of CBS's "Top Cops" overlapped with the writing of three bestselling books: "A Safe Place," "Sleepers," and "Apaches."

The success of "Sleepers" launched a film deal with Barry Levinson, and Carcaterra shifted from newsroom hustle to Hollywood sets.

He remembers writing his first episode of "Law & Order" overnight, after pitching ideas over coffee with a show writer. “It’s the easiest and hardest show to write for. Easy because the structure is tight.

Hard because 24 minutes in, you have to flip the script.” He ended up writing and co-writing five episodes and served as a writer and producer on the series.

Scriptwriting came naturally to him, even if outlines didn’t. He admits he’s terrible at beat sheets and never outlines his books. “I don’t know where the story’s going until I sit down to write it.” That style has carried him through 15 published books and multiple screen projects, including a deal with French Netflix to adapt "Gangster" and a forthcoming Amazon MGM feature based on "The Wolf." He’s also writing an original pilot for a limited series based on one of his novels.

He has two more books in the works, one a thriller and the other a love story with a dark twist. Both are partially set in Europe.

Though Italy holds his heart, Carcaterra, now 70, recently returned to Sutton Place after three years away. He had been living in Pound Ridge in Westchester County, a picturesque escape with a lessthan-picturesque bear problem. “I’m from Hell’s Kitchen,” he says.

“I can handle a lot, but bears?” Two headless squirrels later, he was packing his bags and calling his business manager to make a deal on the Sutton Place apartment he’d been eyeing. “Practically every room looks out on the river,” he says. “You can’t find that everywhere in Manhattan.”

Today, his neighborhood routine includes workouts at Equinox on Second, sandwiches from Pret A Manger, and strolls with his bulldog, Rocco, who has a standing reservation at Camp Canine.

know me by name.” He’s a monthly member of the Italian Wine Merchants wine club and keeps a rotating list of go-to restaurants.

Much of his recent work takes shape in Sutton Place, where he writes with Rocco nearby and the East River in view. “You sit with an espresso, watch the world move slower, and something always clicks.” He often starts the day by journaling longhand and ends it by rereading what he’s written, a routine that helps him stay grounded and productive.

Carcaterra has spent months living in Florence, summers on the island of Ischia, and even wrote the introduction to the Modern Library edition of "The Count of Monte Cristo." His own book collection includes first editions, rare comics, and well-loved classics. “If you can tell a story, tell it. If not, read one until you can.”

His personal library in Sutton Place is stacked from floor to ceiling, because he knows good writers start as good readers.

Still, it’s the chapters from his own life that have left the deepest mark.

For all the glitz, Carcaterra is disarmingly grounded. He speaks openly about the loss of his wife Susan, a former editor at People magazine and Hearst, who passed away from cancer on Christmas Eve 2013. They met at the Daily News, were friends before they were anything else, and traveled the world together. “She wasn’t just my wife,” he says. “She was my best friend.”

Their kids, Kate (43) and Nick (39), now lead lives of their own. Kate is married and lives in Westchester with her husband and two boys. Nick splits time between Manhattan and London. The family remains close, and Carcaterra lights up when he talks about his grandkids, describing their personalities with the same detail he uses for characters in his novels.

Lorenzo met Mary Ellen Keating, a former Barnes & Noble executive, more than a year after his wife’s death. “She’s pretty amazing,” he says. “She’s kind, loving and beautiful. She’s so very easy to love. My kids love her, my grandsons adore her and Rocco is happier when she’s around. I’m lucky to have her in my life.”

When he’s not writing, Carcaterra spends time reading, watching films and Broadway shows, and keeping up with friends. He recently scored front-row tickets to "Just in Time," a gift from his kids, though he suspects it’ll end with his daughter being pulled onstage mid-song by Jonathan Groff, in full Bobby Darin mode, as tends to happen to someone in the front row.

He still travels often, and he’s got a soft spot for Florence and Venice. But his latest view over the East River might be enough to keep him grounded for a while. That, and Rocco.

Asked for advice, he doesn’t hesitate. “Don’t listen when people say you can’t. If you want it badly enough, you figure it out.” He also tells young writers to read constantly and watch everything. “Bad movies, good movies, books that bore you. There’s something to pick up from every piece of storytelling.”

With more books in the works, including his sixteenth titled "The Collectors," and screen projects taking shape, Carcaterra continues to write each day from his apartment above the East River. He’s not done yet. Not even close. “The world keeps changing. I’ve been lucky to keep up.”

ew Yorkers are known for their fashion and home décor sense, but the vibe is most often monochromatic and minimalist, with black, grey, and beige always.

One step into The Shop, however, may be all it takes to inspire adding a little color and pattern into our lives. After all, studies show that certain hues trigger feelings of happiness.

The Shop, opened in July of last year, at 217 East 60th Street, is the first U.S.-based store of a successful India-based familyrun business. Founded in 1969 by Preminder and Kamal Singh, The Shop brought to life their vision to create a business where tradition-based craftsmanship and artistry are transformed into bold, beautiful fashion and home décor. Over time, The Shop came to open numerous, successful shops across India — all rooted in ethical production, natural materials (lots of cottons and silks), and a commitment to sustainable production practices. Now co-owned by the founders’ son Kabir Singh and his wife Aishwarya Singh, with this first U.S. store and the launch of TheShopIndia.com in January of 2024, it has grown into a global brand.

a best-selling print. “It was inspired by the intricate floral motifs of traditional Persian carpets,” explains Aishwarya. “With its bold color and vibrant energy, it has a way of instantly lighting up a room.”

The Shop is a welcome addition to the area, with many great gift idea items as well as vibrant wardrobe and houseware staples for everyone in the family. The Singh’s selected their prime 60th Street location for their first U.S. brick and mortar store as it was familiar and part of a neighborhood they have known and loved for decades. The family has lived on Roosevelt Island since the mid 1980s. “This is a peaceful, elegant block within a community that appreciates quality and character,” notes Kabir. “The area aligns beautifully with The Shop, and we feel like we’re becoming part of the neighborhood’s creativity and cultural rhythm.”

“All our design inspiration comes from vintage design and textiles,” says Aishwarya. “Everything is handmade and hand crafted.”

A stroll through The Shop confirms. The appeal of the lovely patterns and colors of the men’s, women’s and children’s garments, and also housewares, from tablecloths to rugs to curtains, hits immediately.

A closer look brings into focus the quality of the items displayed, and the intricacy of some of the patterns and processes they feature, including hand embroidery, ikat weaving, and printing. The Shop’s curated items are all crafted at the Singh’s own workshop. This practice, the duo explains, allows for accessible prices for quality design and craftsmanship, and quality support for their employees.

“We’re trying to do business in an ethical way,” explains Kabir.

When asked what makes his café special, Eli, the owner of Say Coffee, says he’s on a mission to bring high-quality coffee to people at a fair price. Established in May 2025 and located on 59th Street between 1st and 2nd, Say Coffee uses Lavazza beans and emphasizes quality, affordability, and warm hospitality. “There are no more fairly priced cafés left in Manhattan,” Eli tells me. “We are here to bring that back.”

The interior is cozy and lush with greenery, and in good weather, outdoor seating offers a relaxed neighborhood vibe. In addition to coffee and espresso drinks, Say Coffee serves pastries and plans to expand the menu to include fresh crepes.

Ground Central Coffee Company

Ground Central Coffee Company on 56th and Lexington blends old-school charm with modern sensibilities and a playful atmosphere, offering a lively twist to a classic New York café experience.

Opened in March 2025 and proudly serving La Colombe beans, the shop is compact yet inviting, with upbeat music filling the space and a design that doesn’t shy away from personality. “We want to be the party café of the area,” a barista announces. “Coffee is supposed to be fun.”

With its stereo-decorated espresso machine, chalkboard walls with New York imagery, and smooth, flavorful brews, Ground Central Coffee Company is quickly becoming a neighborhood favorite for those who take their coffee seriously, but not too seriously.

Asano

Have you ever considered what could be done with restaurants that only open for dinner?

Asano, located just up the road on 86th Street between 1st and 2nd, inside Sandro’s, shows that evening restaurants can have a dual identity.

A year and a half ago, Kate Kaneko, the founder and CEO of Asano, envisioned a morning-only café that would bring new life to underused spaces. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Asano operates independently within the existing restaurant, using the space and tables but little else. It has its own beans, pastries, and staff. Kaneko, who is half-Japanese, signals the café is open by hanging a noren, a traditional Japanese curtain. Her heritage also inspires the menu, which features miso- and matcha-infused baked goods and beverages.

“Asano is here to become a local institution,” Kaneko says. “We’re focusing on working with local businesses to support the community and maintain high standards.” While sharing space with a dinner restaurant comes with challenges, Kaneko is determined to prove the concept.

Asano takes something meant for one purpose and gives it a fresh, flavorful second life.

"PATH OF LIBERTY" at Freedom Plaza

n the shadow of the United Nations, my fiancé and I were excited to discover Freedom Plaza’s current exhibit, "Path of Liberty," a tribute to the upcoming 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Presented by the Soloviev Foundation, this experience is entirely free and open to the public. Tickets must be reserved in advance, and hours of operation are Thursday through Sunday, starting at 8 p.m., with last entry by 10:15 p.m.

Path of Liberty opened this spring with plans to run the remainder of 2025. The experience showcases essays, audio visuals, and videos documenting select individuals and families who have made this country home over the last two centuries.

Leading up to the attraction on 1st Avenue, you will follow a fence lined with State flags that continue on when you turn down 41st Street toward the FDR Drive. Upon entering, you are led inside a tent to watch a fiveminute film about the nation's history, with 1776 marking a newfound liberty.

On the other side of the tent, there is a green screen set up with two camera stations where visitors get a chance to answer the question: "What does being American mean to you?" Participants are able to take a photo and record a 30-second video that will go into the archives and, if selected, be featured on a screen toward the end of the path at a later date.

My fiancé Michael recorded, “Being an American to me means that grandparents and parents, from different parts of the world, never would have met if it wasn’t for the US. And the fact that that happened, and now people like us exist, is pretty cool!”
