HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
Wishing all Mothers a Special Mothers Day!
Thank you to my beautiful daughter Keeva Marie for making me a mother. It’s a joy to be your mother and watch you grow into the amazingly talented, beautiful young lady you are. Keeva is an academically talented soccer star, loves singing, travel (she just came back from a study abroad month in Madrid) and cares about Sutton Seniors (please reach out if you need complimentary technology help). It’s a gift to be her mother!
And a special homage to my own amazing mother Ann, the true Queen of Real Estate. Born in the Mayo, Ireland my mother came to NYC with nothing more than a hatbox for her “suitcase” and a hairbrush. She arrived at JFK airport greeted by her American cousins, who gave her a home. A strong work ethic and inflexible integrity led her to become the leading agent in her marketplace, Queens, NY, selling thousands of homes in her career. Everything I know about real estate, I learned from Ann Folan. She led the way for me and my sisters' thriving real estate careers, a passion for real estate investment and love for our work.
This Mother's Day and every day, I am grateful to my inspirational mother and my wonderful daughter. I know all the other mothers out there can say the same for their familes.
Ann Marie Folan is a long-time Sutton Place resident and the top Sutton broker. After serving as a residential and commercial real estate attorney at Stroock, Stroock & Lavan LLP, she joined Douglas Elliman where she quickly established herself as a top producer, and earned the prestigious “Deal of the Year” award from the Real Estate Board of New York. She has closed hundreds of sales in NYC.

Mother’s Day Rituals
BY SUTTON PLACE RESIDENT AMANDA MACTAS
You never need an excuse to pamper yourself every once in a while, and with Mother's Day on the horizon, it' s a great time to start dropping hints. There are many amazing places right in the heart of Sutton Place whose goal is to help transform you from the inside out — whether that's through a therapeutic massage, a life-changing hairstyle, or some cryotherapy. When you want to look as great as you feel, there are a couple of nearby spots on my go-to list that are easy to book appointments at and always have me looking and feeling my best.
SABRIA’S BROWS
Located within JTAV Clinical Skincare, Sabria's Brows is the perfect spot to go if you want to up your brow game but aren't keen on the permanence of microblading. The one-woman show is helmed by Sabria Celaj, an eyebrow artist who specializes in full, natural brows. You'll likely be in and out in 15 minutes. Sabria uses tweezers and pencils to help expertly shape and tint your brows to enhance your facial features. The before and afters truly speak for themselves.
Located at 29 E 61st St, Fl 2 @sabriasbrows
SLEEKCARE SPA
Not even a year in the neighborhood, this new luxury spa is changing the way you approach skincare. The spa offers an array of specialized facials, microneedling, and laser treatments, as well as massages. The staff couldn't be more welcoming or knowledgeable. I am very picky when it comes to my skincare and who touches my face, and I felt like I was in the best hands here. My esthetician customized my facial to my specific needs and took her time to address certain skin issues I was having and even recommended products that would be beneficial without being pushy. Best of all, SleekCare offers memberships and packages to help streamline your skincare needs. It might just be the best addition to the area in years.

Mikette's Madam Networking Neighborhood
BY ELENI MENOUTIS
The last Friday in March we gathered upstairs inside Madam Mikette's magically stunning events space. Many discovered a new place to socialize, new faces to mingle with, and I can confidently say we were all reminded of why we choose to live where we live.
This marked our second-ever networking event, bringing together our neighbors from the community (and a couple city-based fans of the magazine!), all in one room. Our very first social was back in April of 2022 at The Greats of Craft, where we had more than 200 people come out from the community. This time, we had an intimate but lively group of at least 50 — a mix of cover stars, print and event sponsors, contributing writers, readers, brand-new residents, and my always-supportive mom @jeannemceramics.
Madam Mikette's owner, Mary, and her team were beyond gracious, and their chef — how spoiledly we ate! Thank you for the most delicious party spread, passed hors d'oeuvres and quality cocktails. Celtic Moon Tarot, thank you for your added charm, and Ann Marie Folan for helping to sponsor this special gathering.

Helping Parents TALK TO KIDS
How to use skills taught in DBT to IMPROVE COMMUNICATION

BY CLINICAL EXPERT JULIE REINHOLD, PSYD, CO-DIRECTOR OF DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT) PROGRAMS; SENIOR PSYCHOLOGIST, MOOD DISORDERS CENTER, CHILD MIND INSTITUTE
What parent hasn't started a conversation with their kid and had it go off the rails? You want to talk to them about something simple, like getting their homework done on time, and somehow it turns into a fight that leaves you both upset. Your good intentions don't necessarily translate to good communication.
But you can improve communication with your child by practicing skills taught in dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). These skills help parents and children talk to each other calmly, avoid misunderstandings, and find a way to connect.
One DBT skill that helps parents improve their relationship with their child uses the acronym GIVE. Let ' s say you want your child to sit down and do their homework, but they've come home from school in a bad mood and want screen time right away instead. Here's how you might talk to them in this scenario using GIVE:
Gentle. Use a gentle tone of voice when talking to your child. You might feel yourself getting upset because your child has asked for screen time when it 's not appropriate, but try to stay calm.
Interested. Show interest in how your child is feeling. “It seems like you had a hard day at school, so you're not in a good mood. What happened

today?” Actively listen to what they say and ask follow-up questions, so you truly understand how they feel. You might think you already know, but getting your child to put their emotions into words helps them gain more insight into why they feel the way they do. Not only will that help them self-regulate but you might learn something that modifies what you expect from them, now that you better understand the situation.
Validating. Show that you understand why your child feels the way they do, that you can see their point of view. “It makes sense to me that you're not feeling up to doing homework because you had a really hard day at school. I probably wouldn't feel like doing my homework if I had that kind of day.” Note that you are supporting their feelings, not agreeing to the screen time. It 's important to spend time showing that you understand your child's perspective. There's a natural inclination to quickly switch from validation to getting what you want — in this case, saying “but you still need to do your homework.” You want to avoid using the word “but.”
Easy. Have an easy manner. You want to keep things light, so you diffuse any tension. Talking to your kid in an easygoing way creates a more collaborative environment, and it helps make it possible to come up with solutions together. Understanding why your child isn't ready to do homework right away can lead to a solution you both agree on — say, having a snack first or going for a walk to give themself a short break before tackling homework.
Please call us at 212.308.3118 to request an appointment at the Child Mind Institute (215 E 50th St) | www.childmind.org

Susan Janart SOUND SHORE LIFE & SELLING
BY FEATURE WRITER MARGARET PFOHL
The train ride from Manhattan to the Sound Shore is less than an hour, but when you step off, it feels like a world away. The salty air, charming villages and coastal serenity makes the stretch from Larchmont, New York, to Darien, Connecticut, the most sought-after location to call home. It’s where realtor Susan Janart lives, works, and finds daily inspiration.
"The Sound Shore lifestyle is something special," Susan shares. "You get the best of both worlds — the proximity to New York City and the calm of living by the water."

Susan specializes in helping buyers and sellers navigate the unique real estate market along the Sound Shore. As a resident and seasoned agent, she brings personal insight to every transaction, whether it’s a coastal or contemporary colonial in Rye, New York, or a waterfront escape with the quaint downtown feel in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her passion for these areas is more than professional. It’s personal.
I’m Dr. Steven Chavez and I’d like to introduce you to a dental practice offering the care, comfort, style, and support you’ve been looking for: meet Blue Line Dental. We’renowschedulingweekday appointments at our brand new location in the city. PLUS,we’reavailablefordentalemergenciesat ournewo ffice location. We celebrate this vibrant community by making brighter smiles, and we can’t wait to welcome yours.
Introducing Blue Line Dental, a fresh and innovative dental practice that combines exceptional care, ultimate comfort, and a touch of style. Dr. Steven Chavez and Dr. Calvin Tam invite you to experience the care, comfort, style, and support you’ve been looking for. Our brand-new Sutton Place location is now accepting weekday appointments, PLUS, we’re available for dental emergencies to provide prompt care when you need it most. We celebrate the vibrancy of our community by making smiles brighter, one patient at a time, and we can't wait to welcome you!

"I truly love where I live," she explains. "The strong sense of community, with access to local events and culture, parks, beaches, open spaces and activities, fosters a strong sense of belonging. From nature centers to walking on the beach and hiking on the trails, to spending time with family and friends, enjoying cultural and children's museums, then ending the day with an amazing dinner at a NYC-style or farm-to-table restaurant, there's a rhythm to life here that 's both energizing and peaceful."
Spring and summer are the most exciting seasons for real estate on the Sound Shore. Buyers dream of moving in before the new school year, and sellers have the advantage of showing their homes at their absolute best. While everything is in bloom, the days are long, and the energy incredible, Susan feels "it 's the perfect time to fall in love with a new home."
But it 's not just about the homes. It 's the lifestyle. From the Rye/ Greenwich/Larchmont Annual Sidewalk Sales and the Tour de Larchmont for all, to the regattas in Darien and outdoor concerts, food festivals and film centers like the Jacob Burns Film Center, Susan lights up when talking about the events that bring these communities together. "There's something happening every week, all year round. It really highlights what makes these communities so vibrant."
That connection to the community runs deep. In addition to her real estate work, Susan supports causes close to her heart, including SOUL RYEDERS, which helps individuals and families facing cancer, and the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which serves veterans and their families. "Giving back is important to me," she says. "Even a small act can make a meaningful difference."
Her clients, especially those coming from the city, appreciate the care and discretion she brings to the process. Susan frequently meets with buyers in Manhattan to understand their needs and help them prepare for their move. "Buying a home is such a personal journey," she believes. "I want my clients to feel supported every step of the way."
That thoughtful approach, paired with a deep market knowledge of the Sound Shore and beyond, makes Susan a trusted guide in the buying and selling process. But it's her love for the area that truly sets her apart.
"I don't just sell homes here," she affirms. "I live here. I walk these streets, I shop at the local businesses, and I believe in what this community has to offer. That makes all the difference."
Susan maintains an active lifestyle with her vibrant personality and zest for life, further highlighted on her Instagram account @susanjanart_ realestate, where she shares glimpses of her adventures and experiences.

Raising a New Yorker One Walk at a Time

COVER STORY
WRITTEN BY FEATURE
WRITER MARGARET PFOHL PHOTOGRAPHY
BY ANNELIESE HOROWITZ
Most evenings, you can find Kim and her 10-year-old son, Baron, walking along the East River promenade, one of their favorite neighborhood rituals. They love the breeze off the water, the quiet stretch of sidewalk, and the feeling of being a little removed from the city's nonstop energy, but not too far. Because when you live in Sutton Place, you get the best of both worlds.
"Sutton Place feels like the suburbs of Manhattan," Kim appreciates. "It’s super quaint, very family-friendly, and you can't walk a block without seeing a dog or a stroller. It has a charm that feels like home."
Kim grew up in Great Neck, Long Island, but always felt pulled toward the city. Her parents often brought her and her sister into Manhattan for weekend adventures. They went to restaurants, museums, shows, and everything in between. Those visits made a lasting impression. "I love the energy, the people, the culture, the food, and especially people’s hustle," she emphasizes. Even as a kid, she knew the city would one day be her home.
She made that dream a reality by enrolling at LIM College (then The Laboratory Institute of Merchandising), which offered a mix of business courses and real-world internships. During her time there, Kim interned at MTV in the special events department, at Tavern on the Green, and at the Museum of Television and Radio. Each experience gave her a deeper understanding of events and hospitality, and when she graduated, she landed a job at Condé Nast in the special events department.
But in 2008, like so many others, Kim lost her job during the recession. Rather than panic, she pivoted. She applied to grad school and was accepted to Pace University, where she earned a dual master’s in general and special education. While attending classes, she began teaching special education on the Lower East Side and simultaneously launched her own marketing and events company.
"Starting my own company while working and going to school was a challenge, but it was something I felt passionate about," she explains. Her business started small, but meaningful, taking on clients as she finished her degrees. When her son, Baron, was born in 2016, Kim stepped away from the classroom and shifted her focus fully to her business. She rebranded her company and began specializing in marketing for real estate agents and developers across New York City. The field allowed her creativity and flexibility while raising her son.
Baron is now 10, and if there is one word to describe him, it is spirited. He loves soccer and takes inclusive classes at Asphalt Green on the weekends, where he has built confidence and skill. Most Saturdays, you will find Kim cheering him on from the sidelines. Their weekends are a mix of activity and culture. After soccer, they often head to Broadway shows, museums, pop-up art exhibits, or Central Park for fresh air and adventure. Kim laughs that he is already becoming a "jaded New Yorker," but it is clear that he still finds joy in everything the city has to offer.

Their favorite neighborhood spots include Trader Joe’s, Jean Claude’s, Madison Restaurant, Jumbo Bagel, and A La Mode Shoppe. Whether they are picking up groceries or grabbing an after-school treat, Sutton Place has become their cozy, walkable world.
As much as Kim pours into her career and her son, she also dedicates time to causes close to her heart. She is a board member of Asphalt Green and chairs its new adaptive sports program, which creates inclusive, sensory-friendly spaces for kids with varying abilities to thrive. In May, she will be honored with The Zesiger Award of Excellence at Asphalt Green’s gala at the Mandarin Oriental.
She also serves on the board at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Her work with CHOP centers on supporting children with medically complex diseases and special needs. Kim organizes The Powerhouse Fundraiser each year in Manhattan. The event brings together business leaders, philanthropists, pharmaceutical executives, and patient families to raise money and awareness for mitochondrial research.
"I
try to be present in every space I occupy. As a mom, as a businesswoman, and as someone trying to make a difference."

Kim and Baron moved to Sutton Place six years ago. They had lived in a few different Manhattan neighborhoods before, but something about Sutton just felt right. "I really love my building," Kim says contently. "I’ve become friendly with so many neighbors. It feels like a true community."
When they are not in the city, Kim and Baron often head out east to the Hamptons or down to Sunny Isles, Florida, where they spend time with family. Kim also loves traveling for sports events and conferences, a passion that recently took her to Monaco. "I love being immersed in the sports world whenever I get the chance."
If her family had a motto, it would be this: Comparison is the thief of joy. It is something she tries to live by and pass on to her son. Life may not always look traditional, but for Kim and Baron, it is rich in meaning, movement, and moments of connection. And it is clear they would not have it any other way.
Most days still end at the East Midtown Greenway, just the two of them walking side by side. For Kim and Baron, it is not just a path along the water — it's a reminder of how far they have come and everything they are building together, right here in the heart of their neighborhood.

Perhaps the most famous all-time Hollywood starlet, certainly one of the most sensationalized, she is remembered fondly across America as a defining symbol of the era. Although Monroe was a native West Coaster, she spent a large portion of her adult life in New York City, with residences in our very own Sutton Place. Sutton became an escape for the young blonde star, an East Coast hideaway from Hollywood paparazzi.
Fresh off the New York-based film “The Seven Year Itch,” Monroe officially moved to New York in 1955 to promote her production company Marilyn Monroe Productions — and to find herself. At a time when neither she nor her work were being taken truly seriously by the public, the actress wanted to prove that she was more than just a pretty face. Attracted to the quietness and elegance of Sutton Place, a paradise nestled in Manhattan’s hustle and bustle amid the soaring Art Deco-style skyscrapers along the skyline, she settled at 2 Sutton Place South. She spent the year studying acting and honing her craft, able to hide away from paparazzi and exercise control over her own career for the first time in years. Here, she was able to enjoy a taste of personal freedom after years of being under Hollywood’s thumb.

Around this time, Monroe met the man who would become her third and final husband: Arthur Miller, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and author of "The Crucible." The pair were widely regarded as an odd match, but Monroe remained charmed by Miller 's enigmatic New York sensibilities, a sharp contrast to her previous husband Joe DiMaggio. Upon their union, the time came for a move. However, perhaps she found herself unable to part with the charm of Sutton Place, for she and her new beau simply moved next door, to a glamorous penthouse apartment at 444 East 57th Street. This home is even the reported birthplace of the screenplay for Miller 's final film, “The Misfits.”
Although her marriage with Miller was not without its difficulties, Marilyn’s time in New York had an incredibly profound impact, both professionally and personally. After so much public criticism, her personal sanctuaries in Sutton Place supplied her with essential luxuries she lacked in Hollywood: privacy, self-determination, and a sense of peace. While Monroe eventually moved back to California to re-engage in the cinema world and expand her career, New York City made its undeniable mark on her. She returned to Los Angeles a changed woman — confident, rejuvenated, and prepared to fight for respect. She continued her career in film with a new vision, pursuing dramatic, difficult roles and carving out a new place for herself among the Hollywood greats.

Steven Meisel
FAMOUS GRADUATES
Class of VOGUE
BY ART & DESIGN INTERN
KADIJA FOFANA
1971
Founded in 1936, The High School of Art & Design has since been dedicated to nurturing young and gifted minds into professional artists in the industry. When it was originally founded, it began as the School of Industrial Arts. In 1941, co-founder John B. Kenny was appointed principal. Networks of artists, designers, and photographers were formed under his administration. The school’s name was changed in 1960 to its current title, and its location moved to a modern building in Midtown East, on 56th Street.
Today, eight varying art majors are offered: Photography, Fashion, Film, Architecture, Animation, Cartooning, Graphic Design, and Illustration. Each major is given abundant resources to hone their skills as well as professional experience in their fields. The school has birthed many celebrated artists who have made a lasting impact on the art industry, some of whom will be celebrated in our newest series, Famous Graduates of Art & Design!
Steven Meisel, fashion photographer (Class of 1971)
Steven Meisel’s fascination with the fashion world dates back to his younger years, where he spent his youth creating fashion illustrations referencing Harper's Bazaar and Vogue models. He attended Art & Design for fashion illustration and graduated in 1971, continuing his studies at Parsons School of Design.

Although his major was centered around fashion illustration, he would occasionally take photos of people, whether it be models off-duty or his model friends at Parsons. Meisel would go on to graduate from Parsons and work as a fashion illustrator for Halston, a prominent fashion designer of the decade, while teaching illustration at Parsons two nights a week. Meisel’s photography pastime ultimately got him a gig when Elite Model Management booker Oscar Reyes invited him

to take pictures of some of their models. Soon after, Meisel was juggling his fashion illustrator job on weekdays and his budding photography career with Elite Models on the weekends. His work with Elite jumpstarted his professional photography career, later on creating memorable fashion campaigns for big names like Versace, Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, and many more.
His main purpose in fashion photography was to convey social, historical, and artistic commentary through the models; this is also what made fashion brands attracted to him. As Meisel once stated in an 032c interview, his favorite photos are the ones that spark societal conversation: “But it’s not because they are controversial that I like them, but because they say a little more than just a beautiful woman in a beautiful dress. I love that too,

but to try and say something is also my goal.” Meisel took inspiration from influential photographers of the 1970s such as Irving Penn and Richard Avedon, both successful American photographers who worked for notable magazines like Vogue.
Over time, Meisel was Vogue Italia’s prime photographer for all of their cover issues between 1988 and the early 2010s, under the direction of editor in chief Franca Sozzani, for nearly three decades.
Today, he resides in NYC and continues to push photography boundaries with his work.

The Woogie Meet the LOCAL INVENTOR Making Dog Walks Safer
BY FEATURE WRITER MARGARET PFOHL

Dog owners know the feeling. You're halfway through a walk, balancing your phone or fumbling with a bag, when the leash starts to slip. That single, startling moment inspired Sutton Place resident Dr. Sheri Rosen to create The Woogie, a secure, stylish bracelet that locks onto your dog's leash, keeping it from slipping away.
"I needed something to keep Kobe safe, even when I got distracted," Sheri shares, referring to her beloved Pomeranian. One day, the leash began to slide out of her hands, and she knew she had to come up with a solution. A year of design and development later, The Woogie was born. "Once I started using it, I never walked without it."
Designed with both safety and style in mind, The Woogie offers a hands-free solution for dog owners juggling life's daily distractions. It 's more than just an accessory; it 's peace of mind on every walk.
Safety is at the heart of Sheri's mission. "Despite our best intentions, life distracts us, a phone rings, a bag slips, and suddenly, we lose grip. And in that one second, tragedy can strike." She speaks from painful familiarity, having known someone whose dog slipped a leash and ran into traffic. That loss has stayed with her and continues to motivate her work.
Though Sheri spent most of her professional life in healthcare, with a background in science and a doctorate in optometry, The Woogie represents a new chapter. "This was something totally new. I loved tapping into my creative side and designing something by hand."
Creativity isn't the only thing driving this venture. The name, The Woogie, carries personal meaning. After the loss of their beloved Shih Tzu, Chelsea, Sheri and her family adopted a rescue dog named Woogie. Her presence brought unexpected joy and healing. "As much as we rescued her, she truly rescued us," reflects Sheri fondly. "And honestly, every time I mentioned her name, people just smiled."
Sheri has always loved dogs: "One week after we moved from our apartment in Queens to our new home in New Jersey, my dad brought home a dog. I was 6 years old, and I've had dogs ever since." For the last nine years, she and her husband have made their home in Sutton Place. She describes the neighborhood as "our little oasis within this bustling city." It 's where she walks her dogs, made close friends, and found the sense of community that continues to inspire her.
"This business combines everything I love," Sheri explains. "Dogs, design, and making a difference." Every bracelet she crafts is a reminder of what sparked this journey — a simple walk, a near miss, and the commitment to help others avoid the same.

Zoey LIFE WITH
& KOBE
BY SUTTON PLACE RESIDENTS SHERI & PAUL ROSEN
We are the proud dog parents of two adorable pups — Zoey and Kobe.
ZOEY, our little matriarch, is a 15-year-old Yorkshire Terrier/ Havanese mix with a fearless spirit. In her prime, she was the family's fierce protector, standing her ground against dogs of any size without hesitation.
KOBE, our 4-year-old Pomeranian, is as charming as he is striking. With his unique black-and-white coat, he turns heads wherever he goes. But his beauty isn't just skin deep — he has a heart of gold and a love for people. If you don't stop to say hello, he'll take it personally! His favorite pastime? Playing fetch with his beloved tennis ball. He'll happily bring it back for as long as you're willing to throw it.
Kobe also enjoys his daily walks along Sutton Place, securely attached to THE WOOGIE — a special leash-wristlet his mom had to create just to keep him safe and secure. He absolutely loves greeting his favorite doormen, and a special shoutout goes not just to his own building, but also to the wonderful gentlemen at 20 Sutton Place South who always make his day a little brighter!

Rosa MEXICANO
BY SUTTON PLACE RESIDENT MIRIAM SILVERBERG

You've got to go to Rosa Mexicano. It 's supposed to be the best Mexican restaurant in the city, and it is. Located in the neighborhood where they opened their first location in 1984, Rosa Mexicano, now on 2nd and 52nd, features the restaurant 's iconic design elements in a variety of seating areas: a lively bar, a private dining space for 30 people, and ample outdoor dining. The name? The woman who started it visited Mexico and fell in love with the beautiful Mexican pink flowers — Rosa Mexicano — and the wonderful Mexican food, and there you have it.
Known for their Margaritas ($5 Margarita Mondays!), at $16, they are superb. We started with signature Guacamole with chips, $19, made to order at the table. We had Quesadilla, $14, Chicken Flautas, $14, Black Bean and Cheese Empanadas, $12. All were excellent but the Quesadillas were in a class by themselves. We had outstanding tacos, and Roasted Mushroom Enchiladas, $24. One of their signature dishes is the Cheeseburger Grande, $24, served with fries; we had to try it. I'm glad we did because it was so good. Almost all of their dishes come with cheese, and, if like me, you love cheese, you must love Rosa Mexicano. It really is an exceptional place. Of course we had dessert — black coffee for me and….Banana Buñuelos, $12, layers of fried dough, banana and chocolate syrup; Coffee Flan, $13; Chocolate Tres Leches, $12, classic sponge cake; and Churros served with chocolate and raspberry dipping sauces, $12.
Rosa Mexicano serves up portions that are large, flavors that are both innovative and authentic, and service that is warm, making you want to return. Our waiter was helpful and pleasant. You are going to love your experience if you've yet to have a taste.
