Computer Care

Staying up to date by Alan Stainer

Staying up to date is one of those phrases that has a dual meaning for me. On the one hand it can refer to the fact that technology is constantly changing, so that I have to keep myself up to date with everything that is going on. On the other hand, it refers to the requirement for all of us to make sure that we keep our software up to date. It’s that second explanation that I am going to talk about now. There are two main reasons why we should keep software up to date. The first is that software vendors often add new features and fix bugs, which is nice. It is most definitely not the most important reason though, as the second one is really big. Vendors often release security updates to patch vulnerabilities. That’s a technical way of saying, it helps to keep your computer safe from viruses and hackers. Before you all rush ahead and install every update you come across, remember this very important bit of information. A lot of malware (nasty malicious software) will trick you into doing things by prompting you to install an update. So check that it is genuine software you use before clicking on that OK button. www.alansitsolutions.com
