HELLO! Christmas happens at the same time every year but we still seem to rush around at the last minute to get ready - at least we do in our house!

Winter solstice on the 22nd of December is the shortest day and has been a traditional time for gathering together, feasting and some cultures light fires to celebrate the coming of lighter days.

Our charity profile this month is on the Young People’s Shop. Based in Chichester but offering confidential emotional support to young people across West Sussex. With increasing numbers of children refusing to go to school and more young people suffering from anxiety and depression this is a valuable service in need of volunteers, trustees and of course donations.

A full-time chief executive is to be recruited by West Sussex County Council. Becky Shaw has been chief executive of both West and East Sussex County Councils since January 2020, but is now returning to the East Sussex role.

Sussex Police Commissioner Katy Bourne has secured almost £1m as part of round five of the Government’s Safer Streets Fund. The money wil l go towards supporting Sussex police to create eight new Victim Co-ordinator roles; provide six licensed Safety Marshals on foot patrol in high visibility uniform; modernise some of the CCTV systems in Sussex.

A group of Sussex researchers are partnering with universities and school mental health support teams to pilot a school-based programme to help young people in West Sussex who are hearing voices to access support more quickly. West Sussex County Council is asking residents for their views on its priorities and how it proposes to spend taxpayers’ money as it works to close a £44.9m budget gap for the coming year (2024/25). A landmark agreement has been signed that marks the first step towards creating large new areas of habitat for wildlife in the South Downs National Park. Thirty one hectares of land, almost 100 football pitches, at Iford Estate, near Lewes, have been signed over for nature recovery. The large swathe of downland is the first to appear on the National Park Authority’s register of land that is formally dedicated for “Biodiversity Net Gain” (BNG) provision and the hope is that other farms across Sussex may follow suit and dedicate land for BNG. During the run up to Christmas West Sussex Libraries will be holding lots of free seasonal activities for children. Libraries are getting into the festive spirit and offering visitors a fantastic choice of free Christmas events and activities to enjoy from seasonal rhyme times and story times to special craft activities. Charity & Community News Storrington Conservation Society At the very well attended AGM in October, Mick Denness, our Chairman, reported on a busy year. He mentioned our work being carried out at Chantry Hill. A guest, Dominic Sunderland from the South Downs National Park said that such work has resulted in a marked increase in the butterfly population. Mick also spoke about the clearance of saplings at Hurston Warren and our onslaught on Himalayan Balsam. He thanked the volunteers and asked for more to help in the coming year, when we are looking forward to continuing the Fryern Dell project, now the legal questions have been resolved. A main need is the restoration of the balancing pond, an expensive task. Although our finances are healthy, grants and donations will also be required towards covering the cost of the machinery needed.

On 2nd December we again meet at !0.00am, the aim is to clear the paths in The Glade, Downland Avenue. Come and join the cheerful group to enjoy the company and refreshments at half time.

Steyning Grammar Christmas Fair Friends of Steyning Grammar School (FoSGS) are busy organising the Winter Fair, which will take place at the Towers in Upper Beeding on Saturday 9th December between 12 and 3.30pm. There will be craft/gift stalls, student stalls, Santa's Grotto, festive music from the students, tombola, raffle, silent auction, food and drink, and more. This has traditionally been the school’s biggest fundraising event of the year and it will be the first time it has taken place since 2019.

Charity & Community News Want to help find the oldest trees in Sussex?

The Lost Woods project, supported by a £2m National Lottery Heritage grant, is looking for volunteers and community groups to join a team who will receive training in identifying ancient trees and making records of their condition.

Storrington, Ashington and Washington are on the western fringes of the survey area and volunteers will be asked to survey 1 sq km patches at a time in the search for ancient or veteran trees.

Using the ancient tree locations, the Lost Woods team will identify land that can be planted with new trees or left to naturally regenerate so that some of Sussex’s ancient woodlands can be reconnected. This will create new nature corridors and strengthen habitats. The project team will also work with landowners on plans to restore ancient trees. www.lostwoods.org.uk

Young People’s Shop…

Offering confidential support for young people by Lynn Smith Chichester based charity, Young People’s Shop (YPS) offers free and confidential support for young people aged between 11 and 25 years, who are struggling with their emotional wellbeing and mental health.

The charity’s aim is to ensure that every young person in the west of West Sussex can access the help and advice they need.

Cathy Burnard, CEO of YPS, tells me that there is a mental health crisis amongst young people, with the charity seeing rising rates of school refusers and young people suffering from anxiety, depression and self-harm. The factors behind this surge are not surprising, a significant influence has been the pandemic which introduced unprecedented uncertainty, fear and social isolation. At the same time, global economic instability and job losses have intensified stress and anxiety for many.

Cathy goes onto explain that the widespread use of digital technology and social media has exposed people to a constant stream of alarming news and comparison-driven content that also feeds anxiety. “This is a critical time when a young person has taken the first steps to ask for help. Soaring numbers of under-18 sought NHS care for mental health problems in 2022, but according to Public Health England, only a quarter of those who need help get it.” She quotes the NSPCC, "There has been a 33 percent rise in referrals to specialist services for UK pupils needing mental health treatment."

“More and more young people who are struggling come into YPS.” “Many young people who access our services are experiencing problems with their emotional wellbeing and mental health. This may manifest itself as depression, anxiety, anger, low selfesteem, vulnerability, isolation, self-harm, or through an eating disorder. They may be in abusive relationships (neglect from parents, siblings, partners, or bullying at school). We take many referrals from Statutory Services, including GPs and Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) who acknowledge that the young person's mental health is significant enough to warrant further intervention and support from our services.”

Providing a variety of services to help young people with their needs.

Services provided by YPS include - emotional support sessions, provided online, in person or by telephone. These are open-ended, meaning that there is no limit to the number of sessions a user can have. YPS also offers a free counselling service with a team of qualified and student counsellors trained and supervised to offer the best support possible. Again, users can access counselling in person, online, or by telephone.

Additionally, the charity operates a drop-in service providing information and advice on any issues young people may face and can also signpost users to other specialist services. Outreach services take YPS into events, schools, colleges and universities in the community and the charity also runs workshops on topics such as selfesteem, anxiety, mindfulness, employment skills, self-care, and wellbeing.

However, Cathy explains that YPS is a holistic service that doesn’t just focus on mental health.

“We offer activities to support physical health and others to support creativity. Yoga, noncontact boxing, skateboarding, arts and crafts, Bushcraft, and sailing are just some activities we offer throughout the year.”

Accessing the services of YPS YPS prides itself on being an accessible service for young people and young people can refer themselves to the charity, be referred by statutory bodies, GPs or through school contact.

Cathy tells me that YPS has been supporting young people since 1998, when West Sussex

Council set up “Information Shops for Young People,” of which there were seven across the county, each overseen by a management committee. “The project began as part of the National Youth Agency’s initiative to provide free and confidential information, advice, support, and counselling services for young people on all matters that had importance and meaning in their lives.

In December 2009, a policy change by West Sussex Youth Service dictated the closure of the Shop, in favour of merging its advice and support elements with the Connexions/Careers service. However, members of the Management Committee were passionate about preserving the project’s highly valued counselling service.

They decided to maintain governance of the counselling as a separate entity, and to retain the name ‘Chichester Information Shop for Young People.’ “ With no statutory funding or premises, it was a challenge for the committee. Still the Boys’ Club in Little London supported their endeavours and identified a space in their building, which became the project’s new counselling hub. In 2012 the Shop gained charitable status and moved into a larger space in the Boys’ Club building,

enabling the project to offer drop-in information, advice and support in addition to the existing counselling service. In 2021, the charity moves to premises in South Street, Chichester and, “In October 2022, we re-branded and changed our name to the Young People's Shop.”

Since 1998, YPS has been making a positive difference to the lives of the young people it supports. “The number has significantly increased over the last few years. In 2022, we had over 2,500 contacts with young people for counselling and emotional support, with an average

When I ask what degree of success the charity has, and how that success is defined, Cathy provides some of the outcomes experienced by the young people YPS supports, including improved self-esteem, confidence and happiness, and learning self-management techniques to help with stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. She tells me that progress and outcomes are measured through feedback forms. Current results indicate that after visiting YPS, 72 percent said their self-esteem improved, 76 percent felt more confident, 62 percent said anxiety levels had improved, 49 percent said their relationships and socialising had improved and 66 percent said they wanted to make positive life changes following YPS support.

An independent charity, working hard to raise voluntary funding YPS is funded from applications to local community and national funders such as the National Lottery Community Fund and BBC Children in Need. The charity currently has 47 staff

members, including seven paid staff, contracted staff, volunteers and trustees. The charity is, Cathy says, “Always looking for volunteers and trustees to enrich our service to young people.

Cathy says that the more people who know about YPS then the greater the impact they will have on the community. “We want to raise awareness and reach potential funders and the young people we champion.”

Homemade eggnog A traditional Christmas drink Ingredients • 6 egg yolks • 150g local honey • 500ml whole milk • 230g double cream • 1 tsp ‘Carlas Seasoning’ sweet spice blend, plus extra for topping • A pinch salt • ¼ tsp vanilla extract • 100ml Sussex spirit brandy • To serve, whipped cream Method 1. Whisk the egg yolks and honey together in a medium bowl until light and creamy.

2. In a saucepan over a medium to high heat combine the milk, cream, spice blend and salt, stir regularly until the mixture just reaches a light simmer.

3. Add a ladle of the hot milk to the egg mixture, whisking vigorously. Repeat ladle by ladle to temper the eggs. By doing this gradually will mean the eggs should not scramble.

4. Once most of the hot mixture has been used pour the mixture back into the saucepan over a low heat.

5. Whisk constantly for just a few minutes, until the mixture has just slightly thickened.

6. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla and Sussex brandy.

7. Pour the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer into a jug and cover with cling film.

8. Refrigerate until chilled. It will thicken further as it cools, if you prefer a smoother consistency, you can blend the mixture before serving with a couple tablespoons of milk.

Let good enough be good enough!

Please take this as your annual reminder that sometimes good enough is, well, good enough!

Many people feel a sense of dread when they think about the food and drink around at Christmas. I think this is a real shame, and I’d really like to help you avoid that feeling this year.

I’d like you to remember that we eat for lots of reasons which aren’t nutrition. Food is also a way to celebrate, a way to join together with our friends and family. Food can bring back memories and help create new ones. And so, the idea that veggies are good and mince pies are bad means that we are ignoring many of the reasons we eat.

‘Eating well’ to ‘eating badly’ is a spectrum, and you’re not always at one end or the other.

It is quite reasonable to find a balance between the food and drink you want to enjoy, and the food and drink which is supportive to your health

Don’t overlook writing your Will

By Will Writer Emma Cohen MIPW While the topic of one's own mortality may not be the most pleasant of conversations, it is a crucial one. The creation of a legal Will is an essential task that far too many of us procrastinate or overlook altogether.

The impact of not having a Will in place can be both frustrating and detrimental, especially to the loved ones left behind.

First and foremost, without a Will, the distribution of one's assets becomes a complicated and often contentious affair. In the absence of clear instructions, intestacy laws take over, and this can sometimes result in assets being distributed in ways that may not align with the deceased's wishes.

Without a Will, there can be significant delays in the probate process too, this can tie up the deceased's assets for months or even years depending on the complexity of the estate being left.

For those with children it is really important to have conversations with those people you would choose to take care of them in the event that

anything happens to you. Without a Will, you have no say in who or how your children will be raised in your absence. In today’s world of blended families, ensuring that you have officially documented who you want to inherit and when is even more important.

Painted Lady migration patterns and other migratory insects Something to look forward to and appreciate next Spring.

Every year, Southern England becomes the stage for a remarkable sight when 3.5 trillion flying insects, equalling the weight of 20,000 reindeer, migrate across the country. Among these insects are the Painted Lady butterflies, the subject of recent discovery among scientists and butterfly enthusiasts.

The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) has a 50-56mm wingspan and often populates dry open areas. You will see them on your Buddleia or Lavender. Every spring they journey from their overwintering grounds in North Africa and the Mediterranean region to the UK. These butterflies have average altitudes of 500m, can reach 30mph in favourable conditions, and do a 9000-mile round trip from Africa to the Arctic Circle!

For many years it was a mystery where Painted Lady butterflies went in the autumn, whether they died in the UK or made a return journey, as they fly at such a high altitude and could not be seen by butterfly observers. It was recently discovered that the Painted Lady butterflies do make a return journey in autumn, returning to favourable temperatures further South.

These butterflies are unique due to their migration being the longest ever recorded flight in butterflies. These migrations take generations, as they lay their eggs in the UK, and the offspring continue the migration South to southern Europe and North Africa, although not all participate, and some may not survive the harsh UK winters.

How do they know when to start the migration?

The caterpillars of Painted Ladies grow while the days are lengthening, to then fly northwards, and when the days shorten the butterflies know to travel south to warmer climates.

Although the migration of Painted Lady butterflies are one of a kind, other migratory insects are worth keeping an eye out for.

Sometimes we experience mass migrations of insects in summer and autumn.

Between 10 and 25 billion medium and large insects move back and forth out of regions in Britain. This could include hoverflies for example, where 4 billion come to and from Britain each year, and they are essential for pollination and natural pest control. St Mary’s Washington Football taster & harvest festival Stars Football Taster Pupils from Year 5 and 6 took part in a STARS football taster session at Steyning Grammar School. The children had a lovely afternoon learning new skills and demonstrating our school values: team-work and resilience.

Food Glorious Food - Harvest Celebrations Children recently hosted Harvest Festival celebrations at St Marys Church in the village. Andrew Griffith MP Potholes & Arundel Primary School visit Parliament As the wet weather returns with a vengeance, I caught up this week with WSCC Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Joy Dennis, to talk potholes. With around 4,000km of roads across West Sussex, fixing potholes makes painting the Forth Road Bridge look easy by comparison!

The good news is that it was a productive summer. With an additional £14m in the County Council highways budget for repairs, the volume of repairs since the start of April has reached 17,300 compared to 9,500 last year – almost double. More than 90% are carried out within 28 days of being reported – not bad, especially when almost all are now the longer lasting ‘full cut and saw’ rather than the quicker but shorterlife ‘emergency fillings’. Do keep reporting your local potholes but, credit where it is due, its good to see the effort going in to keep your highways safe.

This month, I was also delighted to welcome pupils from Arundel Church of England Primary School to Parliament last week. Despite their

young age they showed a keen interest in the workings of Parliamentary democracy that would shame many adults. A sizeable proportion put up their hands when asked if they would like to be MP’s themselves.

Ashington Parish Council Update for December 2023 Winter Plan and Emergency Plan At the time of writing this we have recently had an exceptional amount of rainfall, causing road access at both ends of the village to be closed and some residents suffering flooding to their properties. Further storms are due, and as a longer term forecast it has been suggested we may be in for snow this winter.

The parish council have carried out the annual review of the Winter Plan for the village, which contains details such as salt bin locations, and a local gritting contactor. West Sussex County Council Highways deploy gritters for main routes such as the A24, and main roads through Ashington parish - Hole Street, London Road, and Billingshurst Road.

Should there be a significant weather event, if approved by Highways, we can employ a contractor to grit an additional route of Rectory Lane, The Sands and Church Lane to maintain access to some of the main village amenities.

We have also reviewed the Emergency Plan which is a comprehensive document that contains details of a coordinated response within the community in the event of an emergency. This is important as it contains key local knowledge and information that would support emergency services.

We hope to not ever need to invoke the Emergency Plan, but it is important to ensure these documents are kept up to date, particularly when we see other parts of the country that have suffered sudden catastrophic incidents, such as flooding of large areas, that require a swift and co-ordinated response. www.ashingtonpc.org.uk www.facebook.com/AshingtonParishCouncil

Storrington & Sullington Parish Council Update for December 2023 We thought we would reflect of the projects we have completed during 2023.

Climate Action and Nature Recovery - January saw us secure a grant from Horsham District Council to install new energy saving heat pumps at the Parish Hall. We also replaced the lights with LED fittings and introduced water saving measures in our buildings. Councillors attended “Wilder Horsham” workshops to see how we can contribute to the creation of “Nature corridors” across the district.

Storrington Memorial Pond - The Sussex Pond Doctor is carrying out two annual maintenance sessions and we are really pleased with how they are making improvements to the area.

Neighbourhood Wardens - Following consultation with our community, the Parish Council agreed to renew the Wardens’ contract for a further 3 years. Unfortunately, Ali left for pastures new in May, but we hope that Chris will have a new partner very shortly.

Coronation of King Charles lll - We arranged a

free family event to celebrate the Coronation on the Hormare field. We were very lucky it was on the one dry day over the whole weekend!

Broadband and Mobile signal - The installation of the new mast at the recreation ground went relatively smoothly. Work continues across the Parish to install fibre by various companies and we hope that positive results will be seen by many over the next few months.

Photographic record of parish for archives - The Parish Council approached Storrington Camera Club and Storrington Museum regarding the possibility of creating a record of the parish and we are pleased to report that this work is underway.
