Staying up to date

Staying up to date is one of those phrases that has a dual meaning for me. On the one hand it can refer to the fact that technology is constantly changing, so that I have to keep myself up to date with everything that is going on. On the other hand, it refers to the requirement for all of us to make sure that we keep our software up to date. It’s that second explanation that I am going to talk about now.

There are two main reasons why we should keep software up to date. The first is that software vendors often add new features and fix bugs, which is nice. It is most definitely not the most important reason though, as the second one is really big. Vendors often release security updates to patch vulnerabilities. That’s a technical way of saying, it helps to keep your computer safe from viruses and hackers.

Before you all rush ahead and install every update you come across, remember this very important bit of information. A lot of malware (nasty malicious software) will trick you into doing things by prompting you to install an update. So check that it is genuine software you use before clicking on that OK button. www.alansitsolutions.com

Native to the Antipodes, the fungi is believed to have been introduced into Europe in military supplies in 1914, and is characterised by tentacle like arms that eventually reach a length five to ten centimetres and are covered in a brown foulsmelling secretion that attract flies that help to disperse the fungi’s spores. Runners Join Trekkers Challenge

Local charity St Barnabas House’s annual South Downs Trek will be open to runners as well as trekkers for the first time this year. The trek takes place on Saturday 7th October, when participants set off from Devil’s Dyke at 8am on a challenging 21 mile route over the South Downs, taking in views of the Sussex countryside, before finishing at St Barnabas House in Goring-by-Sea. The first person to register for the South Downs Trek Run was Cordelia O’Neill, 34, who now lives in Glasgow but grew up in Steyning where her mum still lives. Cordelia completed the Brighton Half Marathon in February 2017, running in memory of her father, Tom O’Neill, who received end of life care from St Barnabas House in 2016. Registration costs £25 per person, which includes a fundraising pack, transportation to the route start, lunch, refreshments, a souvenir medal, South Downs Trek t-shirt and glass of bubbly at the finish line.

Participants are asked to raise a minimum sponsorship of £250, which goes towards fund the specialist palliative care, both at the hospice and in the comfort of patients homes across West Sussex. www.stbh.org.uk/southdownsrun

SUSSEX LOCAL Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Horsham District Council (HDC) is proud to say that they currently recycle 44 percent of waste - the highest in West Sussex – but they are asking for residents help in order to reach the national recycling target of 50 percent by 2020.

Recent research has shown that 20 percent of the rubbish currently thrown away in the green-top (household waste) bins could be put into the blue-top recycling bin, and that in total a staggering 57 percent of waste currently throw away could be reduced, reused or recycled.

Residents are encouraged to look at HDCs dedicated web pages for tips on how to reduce, reuse or recycle waste in green-top bins and for a useful A-Z list of what can and cannot be recycled in the district. Books Under the Spotlight The Two Shoreham Beach authors – Liz Coward and Patrick Souiljaert – will join forces to talk about their acclaimed and recently published books.

The titles “Stairs for Breakfast” and “Screw It, I'll Take The Elevator” by Patrick Souiljaert are a search for self-awareness, achievement, acceptance and love.

“Blood and Bandages – fighting for life in the RAMC Field Ambulance 1940-1946” by Liz Coward, tells the story of William Earl, now aged 102, who served as a frontline Army nursing orderly.

The event will be held on 14th October at 7.30pm at St Peter’s Church, West Street Shoreham-by-Sea. Tickets are £5 (£3 with concessions) on the door.

Proceeds will be shared between East Adur Lions, St Peter’s Church in Shoreham and the Church of the Good Shepherd on Shoreham Beach.

A27 Plans Consultation Period Highways England (HE) is currently consulting on its plans to improve the A27.

The consultation period closes on 16th October and local residents have an opportunity to view Highways proposed A27 bypass on Wednesday 4th October at Storrington & Sullington Village Hall, Thakeham Road,Storrington, RH20 3PP between 2pm and 8pm.

Storrington Conservation Society The Society’s AGM is on 28th October at 2pm in the Village Hall and will be followed by a talk by local wildlife expert Les Allan Williams. Interview with Russell Hastings plus win tickets!

Lynn Smith speaks to Bognor musician Russell Hastings, now a member of ‘From the Jam’ alongside Bruce Foxton.

It’s been a busy year for musician Russell Hastings.

Bognor Regis born and bred, Hastings has been touring, alongside The Jam’s Bruce Foxton, with their band From the Jam to celebrate not just one, but two musical anniversaries.

In fact Hastings can truly be said to be living the dream, having gone from successful, tribute artist to playing alongside his idols in a career that has taken him all over the world and currently sees him touring to mark the 35th anniversary of the Jam’s final studio album The Gift.

This year has also seen the band embark on the 40th anniversary tour of The Jam’s first studio album In the City – which included a visit to Hong Kong to play at the opening of the Rugby Sevens. But when I speak to Hastings he sounds relaxed, coming over as down to earth, passionate about his music and touring as well as being a veritable font of anecdotes, particularly when it comes to The Jam - the band he’s been a huge fan of since his brother brought home In the City, back in the seventies. Hastings began playing the guitar aged twelve, inspired by the punk explosion.

Later he kicked off his musical career in Bognor Regis band Maximum High, and in the nineties was enjoying a successful career playing, amongst other songs, The Who and The Jam covers when he had his “lucky break.” Mike Rutherford, of Genesis, asked him to do backing vocals on a Mike & the Mechanics album and although the album was shelved, the experience led to Russell crossing paths with a number of musical icons, amongst them Ringo Starr and, significantly, The Jam’s Rick Buckler. Rick and Russell became friends and when Rick decided he wanted to get back behind the drums again he asked Russell to join him. They toured as The Gift in 2006, one of their gigs being at Guildford University. Also on the bill was the Casbah Club featuring another member of The Jam, Bruce Foxton. Rick and Russell invited Bruce to join them on a couple of Jam songs, including Smithers Jones and Down in the Tube Station at Midnight; the audience loved seeing

Russell remembers that, “News leaked out, gigs sold out and we attracted lots of press attention.”

Following this the three men met in a Surrey pub: “No management, just the three of us,” and decided to work together, with the result that in May 2007 From the Jam was launched. Rick Buckler left the band in 2009, and Mark Brzezicki, (Big Country, the Casbah Club) drummed with them for five years, before fellow Sussex lad Mike Randon took over in 2014.

Hastings describes Bruce Foxton as his best friend and illustrates his down to earth approach to working with his musical idol by describing how sometimes the pair can get out of the car to find a crowd gathering around them and how he’ll wonder “what do these people want?” This neatly echoes a story Russell heard from The Jam’s touring days, when the band were driving past a venue they were due to play in Manchester that evening and, seeing the crowds outside, asked themselves: “Wonder who’s on there tonight?”

But best friend or not, surely there must be times when Hastings is on stage – singing and playing the Jam’s back catalogue alongside one of the band’s original members – and he has to pinch himself? The man’s reply is self deprecating. He has, he says “been doing it a long time now – longer than The Jam 3 were actually together – but I never take it for granted. As the shoes got more comfortable to wear my own voice came through.” Hastings does consider himself to be “very, very lucky,” but believes that even stronger than the band are the songs, which he feels, “belong to the public.” And From the Jam does have a fantastic array of material at its fingertips – the huge number of successful Jam songs, including four number one hits, and the critically acclaimed songs cowritten by Foxton and Hastings.

This begs the question, how, with such an extensive back catalogue at its disposal does the band decide upon a set list? The Gift tour will cover a lot of tracks from the album - including, Ghosts and The Gift, plus others that please the band and will certainly delight the fans.

As well as pleasing fans with Jam classics, From the Jam has produced two albums in the last four years, “Back in the Room” and “Smash the Clock,” both recorded in Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios. The Jam broke up in 1982, reportedly a less than amica-

ble event, so how does Hastings get on with the man who split The Jam? “Paul is,” Russell says, “nothing but gracious and kind, a sweet and lovely guy.” In fact Weller has played on a couple of the albums tracks, as have other musical icons such as Paul Jones and Wilko Johnson. A live album – the eponymous From the Jam Live – is due for release in December to mark The Gift Tour, which began on 22nd September and ends on 16th December at Brighton’s Concord2

The Jam was, undeniably, one of the biggest selling bands of its day and pretty much era defining, so who makes up the audience of a From the Jam gig these days? Russell says that the audience is very much a mixed bag, “As well as the hard-core Jam fans, (It’s) great to see 17, 18, 19 year olds in the crowd – the converted,” he laughs, “and they know all of the words.”

Beef Medium Bhoona with Fresh Dates – Serves 4 Ingredients

Medium Bhoona Curry Sauce (available @village_larder)  700g Diced beef (we stock S K Hutching Meat)  150g Fresh dates, destoned and halved  2 White onions, sliced  2 tbsp Olive oil  1 Knob of butter  50g flaked or roughly chopped almonds  1 Chili, cut into rounds (Optional)  To serve – ‘Tim’s Dairy’ Natural Greek Yogurt, ‘Wilton’ Basmati rice and sprinkled with roughly chopped coriander 

Method

1. Heat a pan to medium and add the oil, brown your onions adding the butter once the onions have started to go translucent. If the onions

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib, Principle Designer of Glorious Gardens Dahlia Magic - The Largest Dahlia Collection in the UK on your doorstep Tucked away just outside Storrington along Fryern Rd is an amazing feat of horticulture -the UK’s largest Dahlia collection.

Run by the very passionate couple Phillip Godsmark and Mary-Ann Joyce, they grow literally thousands of Dahlias each year from seeds and tubers.

If you pass by in your car, or the local bus (Phillip swears that he has noticed more people sit on the side his farm is on so they can marvel) you will see fields of multi coloured blooms.

Though they grow mainly for cut flowers, each wedding normally requiring up to 300 blooms, Phillip’s real passion is creating new varieties. He bred Ryecroft Jan, a creamy white Pompon, which is currently one of the most popular Dahlia in the the world.

“I collect about 5000 seeds each year from the cream of the crop. I then grow the seeds, as well as take cuttings and divide tubers, and trial them for 5 years before I send them out as a new variety as I

want them to be world class. My favourite moment is when I walk down the rows and see what the seeds have grown into. I don't know what the bees have fertilised and cross pollinated so it is a complete surprise that I can’t predict. For every one new Dahlia that I discover I have planted 1000 seeds!”

Which is very true- top designers use Dahlias for their amazing colour variations and heights, especially billowing over from the back of the border. When Summer has peaked these flowers really do hold centre stage and can flower well into October and even November.

“Yes” says Mary Ann “and we have run out of females in the family to name them after. That one there is called Sam Sunset named after our little dog who died when still young. Jan was named after Phil’s late sister.”

Though they still exhibit at The National Dahlia Show at Wisley each year unfortunately for Phil and MaryAnn, discovering and growing on new discoveries is not very profitable. After a year, their ownership of the variety ends and then anyone can make a cutting a sell the variety on.

Phillip first came across Dahlias when he a boy.

“Like everyone else in the 1960’s, my father grew them. I still love their variation of size and colour and shape. There is no flower like them. A local nursery used to exhibit them. They went out of fashion in the 80’s but they are back now.”

“Every year we say we are going to give up but it’s difficult. People come for miles for them. Recently 4 Australians got off at Gatwick and came straight here.

We grow and test Dahlia varieties sent to us from all around the world”.

But it is back breaking work. Every October, before the cold and damp set in, they dig up over 8000 tubers by hand, clean off the mud, label and store them in dry boxes under cover. “Because they originated from Mexico they don’t like wet feet and can only last a couple of days before they begin to rot. Even though we have good sandy soils here we sometimes have to hand wash and dry them.”

38 Gardening On the 10th April each year they plant them all back again along with the new seedings that carry the hope of discovering even more new varieties. “ I developed the first scented Dahlia in the world by crossing two that had a mild scent.”

Along side personal injuries and thefts from their farm it is hard work to keep such a big plot of land going as they also grow vegetables, Zinnias and Gladioli and sell direct from their farm shop to the public.

But they are still there! So if it is a warm Autumn you may still have a chance to see and buy some of the most beautiful Dahlias grown anywhere in the worldand some vegetables too!

Also have you visited Borde Hill with its magnificent garden near Haywards Heath? It is well know for its Autumn colour display and has 80 ‘champion’ trees’ which are either the tallest or have the largest girth of their kind in England.

You may even get the last of the Summer Roses in its large Rose Garden. It is open from 10am to 6pm (or dusk whichever is earliest).

SUSSEX LOCAL What to do in October  Now is the time to move plants around the garden or plant up new ones. The soil is still warm for the roots to establish but there is less chance of the plants drying out.  You can divide most Perennials now including Rhubarb and balance up your garden by taking the one half to a different place.  You can still plant lettuce and can start sowing Chinese winter greens and Spring Cabbage.  Repairing your lawn can start now with the cooler weather, either using pre grown turfs or seeding into prepared earth.  Your lawn treatment can start this month with aerating the garden with a strong fork and raking out moss and thatch.  Lastly you can cut back shrubs like Buddlea and Lavatera to about half their height to neaten them up and prevent strong winter winds rocking them about- the more fundamental pruning happens in Spring

Storrington Primary School It has been a busy summer at our school as we change over from being a First School to a Primary School. During the holidays we have worked alongside West Sussex to oversee the installation of 2 new huts which will house our Year 2 and Year 6 classes. As well as the more obvious building works there has been the accompanying ground works and IT installations to create inspiring learning spaces for our pupils.

Over the summer term one of our parents donated her time and expertise to work with pupils to create two mosaics with our new name, these look lovely and the children are very proud of their work! During the next month our Year 6 pupils will be working on several projects to commemorate our change of status: Friends of Storrington School have donated a Time Capsule and we are gathering items from the

SUSSEX LOCAL school and the community to fill this with.

The Hooper & Downer Educational Foundation has donated money for us to create a Quiet Garden and we will be working with the Foundation and parents to create and build a special space for current and future pupils to enjoy quiet time and reflection.

Last term Year 5 pupils were asked to put forward House Names – we are delighted to confirm our new Houses are called Fryern, Stor, Parham and Warren – names that reflect our local community.

Pupils and staff have been put into houses in preparation for inter-house competitions during the year!

We would like to thank all our neighbours for their patience and understanding during the building works. Special thanks to one of our neighbours in particular for creating wonderful flower beds at the front of school which look so bright and cheery.

A good hair day Give your tresses a treat!

The art of hairdressing dates back thousands of years with much ancient art depicting people attending to another's hair. The works of the Greek writers, Homer and Aristophanes contain references to hairdressing and in some African cultures a belief existed that a person's spirit was present in his or her hair. During the 18th Century, particularly in France, Marie Antoinette generated great interest in the magnificent creations of her hairdressers who adorned her "poufs" with all manner of decorations including fruit, jewellery, feathers and birds. In the sixties, the "beehive "mimicked this style to a certain degree with long hair (often viciously back-combed) piled high in elaborate The Blush team left to right: Peta, Kate, Emma, Sharon & George buns and chignons.

If your preference is for something that is slightly less outrĂŠ, a visit to the hairdresser is probably something that occurs on a fairly regular basis. A new salon has recently opened in Storrington and we spoke to the owners Georgina and Sharon about their plans for Sharon (L) and George (R) with previous its future. The salon owner Michael salon has in fact been in existence for 40 years and was known as HBM Hair Design, (formerly Hair By Michael). George and Sharon took over in June this year when the previous owner retired and Blush Hair Boutique was born.

George has been hairdressing for 14 years and has built up a loyal core of clients. She told Sussex Local that the new venture is very exciting and that she is delighted to be hairdressing again and looks forward to looking after her clients and styling their hair so that they leave the salon looking and feeling great. .

She is keen to promote a professional approach to hair care with the emphasis on healthy hair and attention to individual needs. It is important, she believes, to suit a hairstyle to face shape, lifestyle and natural hair texture.

Sharon is already a presence in the High Street having established Body and Face in 2007. She too is excited about the new venture and enthused about the rest of the team at Blush; Peta who has been a stylist at HBM for 40 years and has a large client base, Emma who joined 10 years ago and specialises in hair extensions and loves a styling challenge and finally newcomer Kate who is keenly anticipating new clients.

The salon will offer all aspects of hair care for men, women and children, including cutting, styling, shampooing, perming and colouring. Specialist treatments are available for bridal and important occasions.

Individual treatments can be arranged for particular hair types to promote health, condition and shine. A range of hair products, including Paul Mitchell, GHD, MUK and Kerasilk will be available in the salon. Both George and Sharon hope that their customers, old and new will find the salon welcoming and relaxing and will leave, confident that their hair has been styled to reflect their individual characteristics.

It is believed that on average 3 hours a week is spent on washing, drying, and generally tending to our hair which equates to 6 days every year! A woman’s hair, it is said, is her crowning glory. Certainly over the years hair styles have reflected times of prosperity and austerity and have had a major influence on fashion. Surely a visit to a good hair salon whether for a big change or to make a hair style more manageable is a worthwhile investment.

Yes, it’s that time of year again …. Chilly nights, rising fuel bills and it won’t be long before I get the first phone calls concerning dampness! Many energy providers have announced price rises, and it is now estimated that the average ‘dual fuel’ standard tariff will rise by more than 7% from this September.

Now is the time to take steps to freeze your energy bills.

Until recently I had not changed my energy provider for several years, I was concerned that the effort involved was onerous, I had the fear of disruption to supplies. The time came when I was switched to a dearer ‘standard variable tariff’, and I made my move.

It was very straight forward and I estimate my cost savings to be about £200.00 per year.

There are many price comparison web sites where one can find better energy deals including Uswitch, go compare, money supermarket and others.

In my efforts to reduce fuel costs I arranged for a smart meter to be installed…..Its a very simple procedure and the actual installation only took a couple of hours and was entirely painless. I can now quantify energy usage in real time….and it does concentrate the mind!

SUSSEX LOCAL Boilers should be maintained on an annual basis both for safety and efficiency. Expect to pay about £100.00 excluding parts for this service.

Upgrade the central heating system with thermostatically controlled radiator valves and while you are in the mindset, investigate the costs of replacing an older boiler with a more modern and efficient condensing unit………… likely cost about £2000.00.

Energy efficiency is of paramount importance.

Ensure that roof insulation is adequate (a minimum of 10 inches of fibre glass or the equivalent) should be laid over or between the ceiling joists. Insulate the upper surface of the loft access hatch. Insulate and cover water tanks, insulate plumbing within the roof, consider the installation of cavity wall insulation, replace any single glazed windows with double glazing. An energy performance certificate (EPC) prepared by a trained inspector will cost in the order of £80.00 and will advise on the actual energy usage, and potential energy savings.

“On his return from his customary saunter round the estate, Mr Randall had only one aim in view – to go straight to his study and continue the almost gloating examination of the newly bound volume which had only arrived the day before, and all the time he had been out, while he interviewed his steward and spoke to his tenants, his thoughts had been of his book, his very own History of the family of Randall, in the County of Sussex down to the present day. Turning author in his fifties had almost turned his head, Mrs Randall had remarked crossly, coming upon him lovingly turning the pages. She was a good wife, but how few women could appreciate an achievement of this kind!”

In the first chapter we meet the Randall daughters – sadly there is no son to inherit the name, to Richard's disappointment, since his only son had died at five and his younger brother, Charles, had died unmarried, leaving his money to the second daughter, Caroline, whom he had educated so she is rather different from her

sisters. She is the main focus of the novel from this point till December 1859 when she is an old woman living in Wiltshire, but estranged from her family.

After that the narrative moves to 1965 when some Randalls living in Sussex set out to discover their ancestry. Among the things they come across is a copy of the very book with which the novel starts. But is there a connection?

‘Jungle Book’ dance camp at Sullington Parish Hall 25 children aged 5-11 attended the 3 day Dance Hut 'Jungle Book' holiday camp run by Lucy Peacock at Sullington Hall in August. Lucy said, 'We were delighted with the response to our first holiday camp. The children were amazing and their enthusiasm during rehearsals and commitment to the show was outstanding'.

She continued, 'we had around 80 parents, siblings and friends attend the show on the last day of the camp and were so proud of all the children, they excelled themselves! I have had so much positive feedback from children and parents and am pleased to confirm that we will be running another holiday camp "Ghostbusters" during the October half term break. Are you seeking to take advantage of the equity built up in your property by releasing equity from your home to be spent on anything you wish?

For most of us, our biggest asset is our home and when it comes to retirement many people struggle to adjust to life on a smaller income.

This raises the dilemma of potentially needing to sell one’s home and downsize in order to release some of the value from the property. Whilst this is a valid option, it might be that you don’t wish to sell your home and downsize, or it might not be a good time to sell.

There are 2 main types of equity release schemes available: Lifetime Mortgage - These do not usually require any repayments until you sell the property.

Home Reversion – you sell all of part of your property in exchange for a lifetime lease, which provides either a tax-free lump sum, additional income, or both.

Ashington Parish Council The Neighbourhood Plan We are about to enter possibly the most interesting phase of Neighbourhood Plan preparation (in my opinion!). A lot of time over the past 2 years has been spent preparing ‘background documents’ that detail: the number and types of homes we need; the community facilities that we have and any improvements, replacements and additional facilities needed; our Assets and Treasures – buildings, green spaces, infrastructure that are important to us and our residents’ Vision for the future of Ashington.

We have 17 sites around Ashington that could potentially accommodate the homes, businesses, facilities and infrastructure that we need and the site owners/ developers/agents will be asked to submit their proposals for development. We should see some exciting, and creative, proposals coming forward. Residents will get to see all of the proposals and be able

to make comment upon them before any firm decisions are made.

A number of residents have expressed concern about school places during the Neighbourhood Plan consultation process. The Neighbourhood Plan Clerk received the following response from WSCC Education to her enquiry regarding the impact of potentially allocating 123-200 new homes in Ashington up to 2031: ‘The proposed level of housing the Parish Council are considering allocating would equate to approximately 4 – 7 pupils per year of age (28 - 49 primary age pupils and 20 – 35 secondary age). Current pupil projections indicate that this level of growth could be accommodated in the area.

The County Council would consider the level of proposed development, infrastructure required and work with the District Council through the planning application process to secure infrastructure contributions.’

Allocation of a site for development through the Neighbourhood Plan does not necessarily mean that the site will be developed.

Thank you to those of you that took part in the Storrington & Sullington Neighbourhood Plan Public Consultation which closed at midnight on 4th September 2017.

By the time you are reading this I hope that the Steering Group would have met to discuss the comments received and decide upon any revisions to the Plan so that it can be made available for Horsham District Council’s statutory consultation and then independent examination.

I will keep you up to date with our progress in future editions but if you would like any information in the meantime, please contact the Parish Office.

Highways England - A27 Arundel Bypass Consultation Hopefully you will be aware of Highways England’s public consultation on proposals to improve the A27 by providing a bypass at Arundel. French Market Once again we will be hosting the French Market in Storrington on Saturday 30th September at Old Mill Drive. Traders from “France at Home” cross the channel every week to hold their popular market at various venues across the country. Stalls will be offering a wide range of popular French foods from freshly made croissants, crêpes and bread to cheeses, olives and meats including ready to cook cuisses de canard (tinned duck).

There will be lots of other stalls offering a wide selection of goods, so please come along to support this event.

Mobile Phone & Wi-Fi Signal Following the last update we were pleased to have received confirmation of the schedule of works for the installation of the 4G mast at the Leisure Centre supporting the 02 and Vodaphone networks. Preliminary work has already begun and from the end of September there will be activity on five days into October with the work being concluded in the early part of the month. Feedback on the improvement or otherwise of the signal would be welcomed. In addition to the new aerial the network providers advised us that enhancements were due to be made to the existing site at Water Lane and we will follow up on this as nothing has been confirmed up to the time of writing.

Storrington Christmas Night Early plans are in place for the Annual Storrington Christmas Night which is taking place this year on Thursday 6th December from 6pm. As is customary, we will be inviting the shops to open late to take part in the festivities and will host the fun fair, Christmas market and other family friendly activities. Please watch out for details of the “Passport Competition” hosted by the Greyhound Brewery based in West Chiltington.

Thakeham News On the Planning front, residents will be aware that TESLA’s application for two new units at their Water Lane operation has been approved by HDC, but we still await sight of specific conditions, which we hope will include pedestrian safety improvements in the area.

As we await delivery of the new Abingworth PreSchool in December, further work has gone into final detailed specifications for the new Village Hall, Changing Rooms and Cricket Pavilion. We are liaising with HDC regarding ownership of these assets being devolved to local level. It is good to see local clubs now playing on the new football fields!

In relation to traffic calming at Abingworth, Highways bureaucracy has slowed remaining phase 1 traffic calming works (speed indicator signs, new gateway features) but that work is imminent. We will soon have amended detailed proposals for phase 2 works (new pinch point system), for community consultation. For more information see our Traffic Calming Latest web page.

Following the move of Thakeham First School, St Mary’s PCC and the PC have made a joint proposal to Chichester Diocese for local control and maintenance of the Glebe Field as a green space and community resource, and we await a response. There is no news yet from WSCC on the future of the ex-First School building.

Our Environment group is reviewing priorities to upgrade play equipment at High Bar Lane in light of local resident survey responses. We are also progressing the detail of a community transport plan, with the West Sussex Community Minibus Association.

Old petrol pumps The petrol station on the corner of Amberley Road is a familiar feature in Storrington, but did you know that in the 1920s there was one sited in the Square on the corner of North Street where Oomoo is now?

Another long disappeared petrol pump was on the corner of School Hill and East/High Street, not so easy to see in this picture. It was still there in the 1960s although redundant.

We should think ourselves lucky that we still have a garage in the village!
