SUSSEX LOCAL

Nov 2 2023 023 Cover image: Magpie Inkcap Fungus Rebecca Saunders Eartham Woods

HELLO! November is a busy month with Guy Fawkes night on Sunday 5th and Remembrance Sunday on the 12th. Many local communities will gather to watch armed forces personnel, cadets and members of the Scouting organisation parade and lay wreaths in memory of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. You many also have heard of “Movember” a month-long charity event when men grow moustaches to raise awareness of male health issues. Since 2016 Movember has raised over £25 million towards men’s health and wellness initiatives. Our charity article this month is on Carers Support West Sussex. An esteemed organisation doing so much for the many unpaid carers in our community. If you know of a West Sussex charity in need of recognition please get in touch. All charity articles are offered free of charge and promotion in these pages not only raises awareness but can lead to much needed donations. This month is also the start of Christmas fayres and markets, putting us in the mood for another festive season! We have lots featured in our What’s On guide and more online at www.sussexlocal.net Lest we forget,

Kris & Jeff

Charity & Community News Home-Start Arun, Worthing & Adur "After removing my beautiful son's life support at just six months old, his dads physical and mental abuse toward me escalated. Fearing for my life, I ran, living with family and friends. At 41, I was blessed with a second chance – another child and a loving partner, but it was a difficult start for us. Given a room in temporary accommodation when Daisy was just 7 weeks, it was appalling - needles left everywhere and sex workers regular visitors. For a year, we hardly left the room. Home-Start turned our lives around with kindness and compassion. My volunteer encouraged me to leave the room and walk in the park. We’d chat, she’d listen, give valuable, unjudgmental advice – she was an enormously positive impact on our lives. Home-Start supported us into a real home. They signposted us to the foodbank, gave us clothes, a cot bed, toiletries, furniture, free BT internet, and referred me to MIND. Now feeling stronger, we go to one of their weekly family groups. It’s wonderful seeing Daisy playing, socialising, participating in activities. I’m eternally grateful to Home-Start. I’ve no idea where we’d be without them."

Arundel ‘Chord’ would be transformational, local Greens tell Southern Chichester & Arun Green Party has responded to Southern’s West Coastway consultation to express disappointment that the proposed changes are a further erosion of local rail services and direct train travel through West Sussex. Equally disappointing is that once again, despite overwhelming public and political support, the provision of a 500-metre ‘Arundel Chord’ addition (which would provide direct services to Brighton without having to change trains at Barnham) has not been considered. Local Greens say simplifying the journey between Arundel, Worthing and Brighton stations, thereby negating the need to ‘change trains and double-back’ at Barnham or Littlehampton, would encourage greater local rail use. This provision of a viable alternative to car travel, especially for daily commutes, along the West Coast corridor would facilitate a reduction in local road traffic and air pollution and is far preferable to an expansion of the local road network. www.chichesterarun.greenparty.org.uk/

In Your Garden

Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens

Bulbs- a guide to a colourful Spring garden When a client asks me to design a garden with all year colour, my first thoughts are normally-“Right, lots of Spring bulbs so that the rest of the beds can be taken up with Summer and Autumn flowering plants!” They are the most efficient way to have colour from January to May without taking up too much space and bulbs can be planted in areas where the trees haven’t come into leaf so they survive where other flowering plants can’t. And they are inflation busting with most coming back Allium purple sensations in greater abundance each year. Below are some tips on what and where to plant Lawn this month. It is not fashionable these days but why not plant up a large area of your lawn with Crocuses. Alliums - wow factor Plant your Alliums deep as their long stem They will delight you when they push up through growth under the soil to reach the surface will the grass and in the 70’s colour scheme of purproduce stronger more wind tolerant stems. You can also try the giant Snowdrop Leucojuim in a quiet corner of the garden. Plant in amongst other plants You can plant your bulbs in amongst evergreen ground cover which doubles the use of the space and also hides the foliage once the bulbs have finished. Try planting in amongst an area of Perriwinkle, Ajuga, Violets or even Ivy. Snowdrops are good at the base of Japanese anemones before the latter come into leaf. Successional planting Make a column where you make sure you have bulbs coming up all the way through the year as if they are passing the baton to each other. For example you can buy Very Early, Early, Mid and Late flowering Tulips and Daffodils. Also you can factor in the corm families as well with Agapanths, Cannas and Irises as well as Dahlias. There are also Crinums for the end of summer, bright pink Nerines and Cyclamen hederifolium for Autumn as well as autumn flowering Colchicums with their ghostly translucent hue.

Every address every month Planting Advice and Care The packet that the bulbs arrive in will normally tell you the depth and spacing for planting up. If you are planting in clumps dig a whole section of the bed up of about 40cm in diameter rather than try to plant them individually. Bulbs as a rule need very well drained soil so if you are in a lot of clay really prepare the soil well with grit and organic improver and even then you will have to experiment with what survives. If you have planted in pots make sure they don’t dry out which is possible if we have a dry Autumn or Winter. Bulbs like a mulch feed whether in pots or in the open ground so this can done now after you have planted them. If you deadhead the old flowers once they have finished then you will stop the plant having to produce seeds which can weaken it. Most people though like to leave the old seedheads of Alliums to dry out as they look very sculptural over the Summer and Autumn. Lastly if you leave the foliage to die back naturally then more of the energy of the plant can return to the bulb increasing its health.

The humble garage Untapped expansion potential? By Nick Roberts RMR Group A Hidden Gem in Plain Sight The humble garage. A sanctuary for forgotten tools, old bicycles, and those boxes you've been meaning to sort through since 2005. For many, it's a place where dreams of DIY projects go to gather dust. But what if I told you that your garage is not just a storage unit, but a treasure trove of untapped potential? Now, I know what you're thinking. 'But my garage is a mess! It's dark, it's damp, and it's definitely not fit for habitation!' Ah, dear reader, that's where the magic of architectural expertise comes into play. With the right guidance, that cluttered space can be transformed into a haven of comfort and style. While the idea of converting your garage might seem daunting, it's not as Herculean a task as one might think. Yes, there are considerations to be made – insulation, ventilation, and building

regulations. But with the right team by your side, these challenges become mere stepping stones on the path to your dream space. And speaking of challenges, it's always wise to expect the unexpected. Just as in life, sometimes when you peel back the layers, you find a few surprises. Maybe it's an old structural issue or a forgotten time capsule from the 80s. But with a seasoned architect or builder to guide you, these surprises can be tackled with grace and humour. In these times, when space is at a premium and the world is changing rapidly, it's comforting to know that we can find sanctuary right under our noses. Garage conversions are not just about adding space; they're about enhancing the quality of our lives. They're about rediscovering the beauty in the familiar and making the most of what we have. So, the next time you look at your garage, see it not as a storage space, but as a canvas waiting for your vision. And who knows? That hidden gem might just be the best room in the house. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

Carers Support West Sussex…

Offering support to unpaid carers in the county. By Lynn Smith NHS England, defines a carer as “Anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid. Carers Support West Sussex (CSWS) is the amalgamation of three organisations who saw fit to become one. Registered with the charity commission in 2008, the charity is now fifteen years old and has been growing from strength to strength as the need for support of carers has grown. Sonia Mangan, CEO of Carers Support West Sussex, says that there is a nationwide need to provide support to these carers. CSWS is West Sussex’s support for those who are caring for someone. The charity is dedicated to offering unpaid carers the information, guidance and emotional support they need, whether the individual’s carer journey is a sudden responsibility or a lifelong commitment. “It’s (CSWS) aim is to deliver a well networked and supportive approach to each carer in the county, in the city, town or village in which they live, providing local solutions to family and friend carers.” Why is the charity necessary? Carers UK has provided key national facts that give context as to why the charity is needed: Over the period 2010-2020, 4.3 million people became unpaid carers – 12,000 people per day (Petrillo and Benett, 2022); fifty-nine percent of unpaid carers are women (Census 2011), women are more likely to become carers and to provide more hours of unpaid care than men, and more women than men provide high intensity care at ages when they would expect to be in paid work (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). Also, one in seven people in the workplace in the UK are juggling work and care (Carers UK, Juggling Work and Care, 2019) and between 2010-2020, people aged 46-65 were the largest age group to become unpaid carers. In fact, 41 percent of

people who became unpaid carers were in this age group (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). CSWS offers guidance and practical and emotional support Accessing this support, Sonia Mangan explains, begins with the carer making contact or being referred to CSWS, by a professional who has recognised a need for support. The carer discusses their caring situation with a wellbeing worker who can assess the best course of action. The charity doesn’t subscribe to the belief that one size fits all. In fact, they believe that every caring situation is different and should be treated with the respect and dignity deserved. One way of achieving this aim is via a statutory carer assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the help and support which could be provided to the carer, which may include access to equipment or services offered by the council. During the assessment, common topics of discussion include: The carer’s role and how it affects their life; how the carer feels about caring and the options available; and the carers health and wellbeing, including physical, mental and emotional problems the carer might be having. The assessment will also discuss the carers relationships, social life and recreation, as well as employment, training, studying and volunteering, and planning for emergencies. All the support on offer to carers is completely free of charge. If a carer would like to join a carer group – whether that is face-to-face or online – or If they wish to receive carer benefits advice, or arrange for a

volunteer to do a regular check in and chat, all they need to do is register with CSWS. A twenty-six percent increase in carer registrations CSWS has over 30,000 carers registered and has seen a staggering twenty-six percent increase with them. During 2022 – 23, 5,301 new carers were registered with the service. And, according to the charity, the number of monthly registrations just keeps climbing and climbing. The charity points those carers who are new to caring, or those looking for more information, to the Carers Smart Search, accessed via the CSWS website. This simple tool takes a couple of minutes answering questions and guides the carer to the information they’re seeking. If the carer cannot find what they’re looking for a phone call to the charity should provide them with the help they need. Defining success CSWS’s vision, Sonia Mangan says, is to bring the day forward when family and friend carers are seen, heard, and included. During 2020, the charity’s trustees, employees and volunteers worked together with carers to review who CSWS

are, what they aspire to and the actions needed to achieve these aspirations. “The vision and the strategy are the driving force of the organisation. And so, success is defined by how we stack up against that vision and the six strategy aims.” There is regular consultation with carers to establish if their needs have changed, to ensure we are delivering the right services at the right time. We also constantly ask carers to give us their opinions about how we are performing. And with ninety-nine percent of carers saying they would recommend CSWS to other carers

Every address every month or friends and family, we must be doing something right. You can find out more about CSWS’s six strategy aims from the “Our Strategy for the future” report, available on the website. Carers Rights Day – Thursday 23 November 2023 Each year Carers Rights Day brings organisations together to help carers in the local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. This year the campaign will focus on the ways in which caring costs unpaid carers. Events will be running throughout the week and CSWS encourages carers to book their places in advance. Predominately funded by local government contracts CSWS receives most of its funding from West Sussex County Council (WSCC) with the remaining funding coming from grants and other trading facilities. Currently, CSWS has 118 employed members of staff and 73 volunteers. The charity relies upon the support of volunteers who Sonia Mangan describes as “Fantastic and assist in all areas. Last year,

volunteers contributed an incredible 146,704 minutes of volunteering. The volunteer run “check in and chat” telephone befriending service provided 20,910 minutes! Which helped carers feel more socially connected. “We are in the process of reviewing our volunteer roles, but will very much be recruiting for new volunteers very soon – so keep an eye out for the roles on our website. When I ask Sonia what the greatest challenge is facing CSWS, the response she gives is, sadly, a common one amongst the charity sector. “One of the greatest challenged faced by the charity is the ability, with the resources given, to keep up with demand. CSWS wants to ensure that each carer is given the time they deserve, which may mean that waiting lists may be longer than the charity would like. In this case the charity asks carers for their patience and understanding.” Contact Carers Support West Sussex The Orchard, 1-2 Gleneagles Court, Brighton Road, Crawley, RH10 6AD. Tel: 0300 028 8888. Go Green Behind the Wheel Eco-Driving Tips to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Here are some tips to save fuel and money while helping the planet: Drive smoothly Sudden accelerations and hard braking waste fuel. Gently accelerate and coast more while anticipating traffic patterns ahead. Cruise control also helps maintain a fuel-efficient constant speed. Monitor your speed Speeding wastes fuel. Optimal fuel economy is achieved between 30-50 mph. Above 50 mph, fuel economy drops rapidly. Use cruise control on motorways to avoid speeding. Reduce idling Idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine. Cut idling time by turning off your engine if stopped for more than 30 seconds. Exceptions include heavy traffic jams.

Lighten the load Extra weight reduces fuel economy, so remove unnecessary items from your car. An extra 100 pounds can reduce efficiency by up to 2%. Also avoid using roof racks when not needed. Check tire pressure Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance which reduces fuel economy. Check pressures monthly and before long trips. Proper inflation also enhances safety and tire lifespan. Limit air conditioning (A/C) Use A/C sparingly. At faster speeds, opening windows is more efficient than A/C. Park in shade to keep your car cooler. Schedule maintenance to ensure A/C runs efficiently. Following these simple eco-driving tips will boost your fuel efficiency, save money on fuel, and reduce harmful emissions.

Arundel: What’s in a name?

By local historian Mark Phillips

The beautiful castle town of Arundel

In 1586, William Camden wrote in the Britannica a topographical survey of England, that the name ‘Arundel’ simply came from, ‘…the valley or dale which lieth upon the river Arun, in case Arun bee the name of the river…’ ‘…who thereupon named it in Latine Aruntina vallis , that is, Arundale.’ Moving on to 1834, one of the town's most respected historians, The Rev MA Tierney, considered several varied and fanciful suggestions put forward over the years for the origin of the town name. Like Camden before him, he settled for what he believed was the most logical explanation - ‘Dell (valley) of the River Arun.’ A very reasonable conclusion... at the time. However, we now know that the river Arun was named after the town and not, as is usual, the other way around. Furthermore, back in the late 1600s, the River Arun was known as the Arundel River or The High Stream of Arundel. Which, incidentally, could imply that there was also a ‘Lower Stream of Arundel’ at some point in history. Attending primary school in the mid-1960’s, the teachers told us that ‘Arundel’ was named after a wild plant called Horehound that was supposed to have grown in the fields either side of the river. In old English this was a medicinal plant known as ‘Harhund’ and in old English the town become known as Hārhūnedell, the valley or dell where the Harhund grows. Did this later evolve into ‘arhundel’ by dropping the ‘H’? Another explanation was that the name comes from ‘Swallow’, being the heraldic emblem for Arundel. We were told that the word ‘Swallow’ is ‘hirondelle’ in The Arundel Swallow on top French. (or in old of the Town Hall

French arondelle) As a child, I considered this explanation, until I figured that if true, it would have been like naming a town Blackbird or Woodpecker; unlikely maybe… Does the name derive from the Anglo-Saxon word hærndell, that meant ‘tidal valley.’ This may imply that Swallow on Town Quay the word ‘Arun’ derives from ‘tide/tidal.’ The name could also be Old English; earndæl or ærndæl, meaning 'eagle dell' or 'dwelling dell'. However, we have another problem with these suggestions, as the suffix ‘dell’ is quite uncommon in this part of the UK and is far more frequently found in the North of England and Scotland. And ‘arun’ (Latin) linked with (the more northern word) ‘dell’, would have been a rather unusual combination. Arundel historian, Rosemary Hagedorn suggests another possibility, ‘… arundo is Latin for reed, (alternative spelling harundo. Plural, reeds, arundines) although this does not mean that the name is of Roman origin. In the Middle Ages, scribes wrote books and documents in Latin, translating common speech such as Old English or Norman French. For example, the old English place-name hreadwaeter ‘reed-water - marshy land where reeds are growing’ might be translated into Latin as Camden’s ‘Aruntina vallis’, the valley of the reeds, and then partly back translated as Arun dell? We do know that the name ‘Arundel’ was in use in the 1500’s. In the 1700’s the name was often spelt as ‘Arundell’, until the spelling with the single ‘L’ was commonly accepted in the mid 1800’s. So what are your thoughts on this? Is it one of the above? Is it a mixture of more than one of the above? Up until the early part of the 1900s, locals would often pronounce ‘Arundel’ as ‘Harrndel’ or ‘Arrndel’. Is this a clue to unravelling the mystery? Or perhaps you have another explanation? As Rosemary says: “It’s fun to speculate, but the truth is we really do not know.”

James Garage, Burndell Road, Yapton By Allen Misselbrook, Yapton & Ford local history

1995 Noble Autos garage fire

The Burndell Road Garage Many Yaptonians will remember James Garage situated on the southern side of Burndell Road. The business change hands and name several times in its latter years finally ending up as Noble Autos. Following a devasting fire 1995 the garage was demolished and rebuilt, to serve the village for another ten years before succumbing to the developers. Nippabout Motor Works The garage started out life as Nippabout Motor Works, the brain-child of Albert George James, a Londoner, who moved to Yapton in 1922 and set-up a very successful business producing toy pedal cars. Many were exported and some were even sold by Selfridges, who ordered 12 at a time. The design was based on a Morgan 3 wheeled car of the same period. Forward motion was achieved by linkages rather than being chain driven. Albert’s entrepreneurism didn’t end there. According to a receipt dated 1925, under the name of James & Clayton, they promoted themselves as Engineers as well as Motor & Cycle Agents. The receipt was for the sale of ‘Model B25 B.S.A. Motor Cycle with footboards’ sold for £45-13 shillings.

Charlie Langrish in Workshop

Garage Expansion As his business expanded, Albert James created a haulage company employing 15 men. He invested in old Brighton Daimler buses which he converted and used in his new venture. A contract which he was most noted for was transporting fully grown trees from Slindon Woods to Bailiffs Court, Clymping, for Lord Moyne who wanted to create an instant garden in the grounds. By this time Albert had outgrown his premises, so to overcome this problem he knocked down his own house, which was sited next door to his workshop, and a neighbouring flint cottage. This made way for his new workshop, showroom and forecourt to which he added petrol pumps in 1955.

James Garage Petrol Pumps

A New Generation Following the death of Albert James in 1963, the business passed to his son Stan, who with his friend from his school days, John Green, continued to run a very successful business. Many readers who lived in Yapton at them time will remember their chief mechanic, Charlie Langrish, who carried on working for the company well past retirement age. When the garage was sold in the 1980’s and became Scott and Noble, Charlie continued to work part time for the new owners. End of an Era The ownership changed again a few years later and became Nobles Autos. It was in 1995, that a car caught fire in the workshop, and the resulting inferno destroyed about 70% of the premises. Like the Phoenix, a new garage grew from the destruction only to be pulled down in 2006 to make way for Ryebank Walk. 242 Health & Wellbeing

Two options for losing weight By Heather Smith - Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Two Options for Losing Weight Option 1 - Cut your intake drastically, increase your activity and hold on tight. Option 2 - Make sustainable changes to your diet and exercise habits. Now, no one is going to tell you that option 1 won’t work. It will work, and it’ll work quickly. But, you’ll reach a long lasting, hard plateau fairly quickly. Then, you’ll need to cut your intake and increase your activity further and further – until you’re surviving on a tiny amount of food and spending all your time exercising. Worse, if you dare to take a couple of days off, or eat a little more, the weight will stick to you like glue. Sadly, this is a position many find themselves in.

Option 2, however, will get off to a bit of a slower start. Not much seems to happen at first but then the change starts to accelerate and snowball. This approach is much more sustainable both in terms of the habits you’re putting into place and in terms of the results you will see over the long term. It’s kind of like delayed gratification, except it’s not, because you’ll almost certainly never reach your goals with option 1. So, if you’re looking for true last-for-life results, don’t be tempted to do the most you possibly can – instead, do what is genuinely sustainable for the long term and work at consistently putting these changes into place. I think you’ll be surprised at how well this approach works for you. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Amberley C of E Primary School Celebrating who we are & harvest celebrations It seems unbelievable that we are moving so quickly through the school year; the lovely autumnal colours are all around us and there is a definite chill in the air. We have been a busy, happy school throughout the past couple of months and are very much looking forward to Christmas! Celebrating Who We Are – Class Flags At Amberley, we have three amazing classes: Willow, Maple and Oak. At the start of year, each class made a Class Flag which comes from the idea of creating a ‘tribal classroom’, helping to foster a sense of belonging for everyone. Everyone contributes to the flag - including classroom staff – and the flag stays up

all year round as a symbol of each class being a team. It’s a fantastic display to refer to; as the team gets stronger through the year, the flag is there to symbolise that. Harvest celebrations We celebrated Harvest at the start of October at St. Michael’s Church. There was a wonderful and warm sense of community at the service and we truly valued the generous Harvest donations made by families. The donations are going to Family Support Work, a Diocesan charity that provides services to many families, of all faiths and none; they seek to strengthen each family they work with, to provide a safe environment for children and give them the best start in life. Arundel C of E Primary School Update for November 2023 ACE Year 5 Visit Christ’s Hospital The children recently had the opportunity to watch a production, delivered by some of the students from Christ’s Hospital school. Year 9 drama students from the school performed their original devised pieces based on folk tales and legends from around the world. The Stories shared were based on the changing seasons, cultural events and international festivals. Ava and her amazing gift to others In a heart-warming display of empathy and generosity, Ava, a four-yearold pupil in Rainbow Class (Reception Class), has captured our hearts by saving her pocket money to help others during the harvest festival. Her actions exemplify the core values of ACE and showcase her remarkable qualities at such a young age.

Super Ella Ella in Year 6 has chosen to do a Cancer Research challenge this month which includes walking 100 miles in October. Her grandad received the all clear on Friday after his last battle whilst ongoing battle continues with two other types of cancer. Harvest 2023 at ACE Harvest Festival is a fantastic time of year. Both children, governors, volunteers, parents and teachers have an opportunity to show their gratitude towards God who created our wonderful world. Today was a fine opportunity for the whole ACE community to give thanks for the food they receive, provide a greater awareness of where it comes from and encourage us all to reflect about those who are less fortunate. We thank all ACE families for their generosity in a time where few have plenty. arundelchurchofenglandschool.org.uk

Andrew Griffith MP MP for Arundel & South Downs, November update Many residents had written to me in recent months genuinely fearful that they lived off grid in a rural area or an older property and had heard about plans to ban replacement boilers from 2026.

Around 1 in 5 households across our community are estimated to be off the gas grid, many of them pensioners on limited means, so this was a very real concern. Removing this fear of an impending boiler ban was one of the pragmatic and proportionate measures announced by the Prime Minister this month.

Aldingbourne Parish Council Report from Parish Council meeting on 3rd October 2023 Aldingbourne Community Sports Centre - Jonathan Leahy was in attendance and advised that Aldingbourne Community Sports Centre in conjunction with local churches was considering offering a Christmas Day lunch to residents that meet a certain criteria (yet to be determined). Jonathan Leahy also reported that following the presentation by Barnham Trojans on proposals for new changing room facilities, that there may be issues with this project and the lease ACSC has with the Parish Council and the amount of land that would be involved in this project. He will provide a copy of the lease to Cllr Foott who will review the lease. Food bank - There is now a food bank at the Westergate Methodist Church due to the cost-ofliving crisis and it is felt a lunch on Christmas Day would be welcomed. Heidi Luther the Treasurer of the ACSC has a food handling certificate, volunteers would be needed but he was confident that this would not pose a problem. The Parish Council advised they were fully supportive

of this initiative and looked forward to receiving a full report on the logistics of the day, which would be kept to a maximum of 50 people. Update on Speed Indicator signs from Cllr Flitter - Cllr Flitter had volunteered to progress this initiative and provided a report which was circulated prior to the meeting. A vote was taken on whether to progress this project. 5 councillors were in favour for the project to go ahead and 2 councillors were against on the basis that there was no evidence it would reduce speeding. Cllr Rickard agreed to take a lead with Cllr Foott, who would assess the information in the report, the quotes received and the proposed locations and report back. The Clerk will include this on the list of projects for the next finance agenda. www.aldingbourne-pc.gov.uk

Amberley Parish Council Illegal parking, speed limits, bus services, hedgehogs Edited extracts from draft minutes of the Council meeting 14th September 2023. Issues raised by residents: Inconsiderate and illegal parking in the village, especially at the junctions at either end of Hog Lane. A resident suggested double yellow lines to be installed and a recommendation for residents affected to report the vehicles to Operation Crackdown. The council agreed that further investigation into the parking issue is required. How is the council encouraging the use of the car park? The car park is very well used, CCTV evidence confirms this. Hedgehogs being run over on the road near the entrance to the football field. Council is looking into the installation of hedgehog warning signs. Millennium Green Trust A trustee asked if the council would continue to provide their annual donation to cover insurance costs. This would be discussed at the Finance meeting in October. Bridge maintenance. A trustee from the Millenni-

um Green advised that they are currently in legal negotiations with Antler Homes regarding the maintenance costs for the bridge from the Swan Meadows development to the Millennium Green and asked if the council could provide a further donation to help with their legal costs (£2,000 so far), which would be returned if they were successful. The council agreed to discuss this request at the October Finance Committee. 20mph village speed limit application had gone through the initial stage, now with a West Sussex Highways Traffic Engineer to fully review the request. 40mph speed reduction along football field support of Paul Marshall, leader of West Sussex CC, has been obtained (required for the application to progress) and that the application would shortly be submitted to WSCC. Village Bus survey is currently underway to see which services residents would like. They are also hoping to get another driver. www.amberley-pc.org.uk

Walberton Parish Council Update for November 2023 Extracts from the minutes of the minutes of the Full Council (12th September) and General Purposes Committee (19th September) meetings The Avisford Grange tennis courts are nearing completion. Some issues remain to be addressed before they can be handed over. Queries regarding the deeds are with the solicitor. Options for tennis provision and management of the courts were presented. Further potential works including timed floodlighting were discussed. The options for electric vehicle charging points were discussed. Possible works to connect to the Village Hall power supply were noted. The possibility of an alternative supply via the Pavilion was also discussed as there may be more

capacity; the Pavilion solar panels may offset some of the electrical costs. A response was received from West Sussex County Council regarding provision of a pedestrian crossing for residents to safely access the new bus stops on the northbound A29. The Council will need to make a formal request for consideration to WSCC including support from residents and the County Councillor. Any application made today will be considered for the 2025/26 build programme. Concerns have been received from West Walberton Lane residents regarding FTTP broadband provision as this road is excluded from current schemes. WPC will gauge interest and contact the suppliers to investigate solutions. WSCC’s winter resilience plan was noted including the proposed gritting routes. This will be reviewed, but West Walberton Lane will be requested as an addition to the proposals being a key access road to the A27 and a bus route. www.walberton-pc.gov.uk
