Though the new regulations, standards and inspections seem endless, the ethos at Woodlands has not changed here in twenty five years either, “Treat each resident as if they are your own parent”. Not difficult to understand, though challenging at times.

The staff, all highly qualified and very experienced in the field of ROOM AVAILABLE NOW! Dementia Care, take enormous pride in their team with the results of a “GOOD” in all five categories of the CQC Inspection Report.

However, the greatest reward is daily…seeing residents content, secure, and comfortable and feeling at home without social pressures. Being a small home, only fourteen residents, most residents get on together well! There is always a quiet corner if someone feels a little Me-time is in order!

Woodlands House is a care home for elderly people with short term memory, dementia confusion, and Alzheimer’s disease. The families of residents at Woodlands have recognised, that whilst becoming less able to live independently, even with home-care, their remaining skills and abilities can be more successfully maintained given specialist care earlier, rather than later.

The environment which is comfortable and homely with all soft furnishings, gives the warmth and understanding normally associated with family care. It is also borne in mind how families feel when first leaving and later visiting loved ones. It is important they feel comfortable and confident in the care being provided.

Activities, passive and active are encouraged throughout the day by trained care staff. The importance of recognising, nurturing and encouraging the residents remaining skills and ability to communicate is of paramount importance to the quality of care given at Woodlands House.

Christmas is coming, and like everyone else we will be preparing homemade mince pies, Christmas Cake and loads of shortbread! Decorations will cheers us up as we look out at the birds and squirrels scurrying around for their supper while residents patiently wait for the warm aromas of baking indicating supper and Christmas are on their way! Another year at Woodlands!

Sussex Snippets After hearing the news that the majority of hospital admissions for children were for teeth extractions “Figures for the 2015-16 financial year show there more than 3,000 hospital admissions for under 18s needing tooth extractions” – Yasmine Djadoudi, BBC Live reporter, Gateway Dental of Burgess Hill decided to begin an initiative to make children aware of the importance of oral hygiene. They started delivering presentations to children from local schools and liaised with West Sussex County Council’s Public Health team who provided supportive health promotion materials – the objectives being to reduce the number of referrals to hospitals for extractions by encouraging a healthy diet, regular attendance to the dentist and a comprehensive and thorough explanation/demonstration of how children can maintain healthy teeth at home. www.nhs.uk/change4life, In his formal response to the public consultation on the bypass, which closed in October, Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert has urged Highways England to take forward plans for an Arundel bypass which he says “must go ahead” – stating his belief that “the case for a fully-dualled, offline A27 Arundel bypass is very strong and widely supported.” After analysing the responses Highways England are expected to publish

Rockinghorse Children’s Charity smashed through its £500,000 appeal target two months before the end of the year, as it celebrated its Golden Jubilee at The Grand Hotel in Brighton recently, playing host to over 400 of the charity’s supporters – raising £112,000 at the ball itself, every penny of which will be going towards the appeal. Best known as the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton, Rockinghorse raises money to make services stimulating, cutting-edge and accessible for the many babies, children and young people who need them. www.rockinghorse.org.uk.

The West Sussex Plan sets out how the County Council plans to shape its services over the next five years with a focus on - giving children and young people the best start in life; ensuring West Sussex is a prosperous place; having strong, safe and sustainable communities; supporting people in later life to remain independent and being a council that works for its communities. The plan contains WSCCs vision for West Sussex and what the council is trying to achieve for residents and for the county, and also sets out those differences will be made and how residents will know whether WSCC has been successful in achieving them. www.westsussex.gov.uk/plan An anti-sexting app from Childline is using humour to help teenagers in West Sussex deal with unwanted requests for sexual images of themselves - sexting was the most viewed topic on the Childline website last year with 221,840 page views - and the free app offers young people a gallery of images and animations called GIFs they can send in response to requests for sexual pictures and to deal with difficult sexting situations. Judo Club Successes Storrington Judo Club entered four judoka in the Southampton Samurai Open Competition in October.

The day was a huge success for the club with Gold medals for Connor, Jack and Charlie and a Silver medal for James. Head Coach Michael Powell expressed his pride in the boys’ achievements, saying: “All four boys fought brilliantly with great skill and passion in representing their club.” The club is now running a second session on Mondays, from 6.30-8pm, and hopes to encourage those who want to move their judo along as well as attract new members. One hundred walkers and runners braved wet and windy conditions to trek or run 21 miles across the South Downs in October, raising money St Barnabas House hospice. The South Downs Trek, now in its third year, is expected to raise around £30,000 for the charity. This year was the first time that the annual event has been opened up for runners to take part in addition to walkers. Challenge seekers will be excited to know that registration is still open for the Dalia Lama India Trek for St Barnabas House, which takes place in October 2018. www.stbh.org.uk/india Beavers looking smart

Woodland Under Threat Dear Editor, Longbury Hill Woods – Planning Application: DC/17/2117.

A 27-acre woodland outside Storrington looks set to undergo a drastic change. Up to 9,000 Scots pines trees are to be felled under an application made by the landowner. The Forestry Commission is considering the application in light of the amenity value to local residents, as the trees are an important part of the character of the area. Indeed, the woodland has hitherto been left unmanaged and resembles a natural reserve. Horsham District Council is considering a new road access onto Rock Road, to facilitate the huge machinery that is necessary with this kind of intensive forestry activity.

Residents have myriad concerns: the safety of road users …water drainage issues … the destruction of the existing wildlife habitat … loss of mature trees that will take years to regrow. The proposed access road would also flatten part of an ancient boundary bank along Rock Road that has existed for 1000 years.

At a Washington Parish Council meeting, the landowner, Julian Hanbury-Aggs, said that the works were being done for economic reasons … however, the cost of restocking a large site (which is required by the Forestry Commission felling licence) is likely to be around the same value as the pine trees. The speaker at the SCS AGM was Dr Les AllenWilliams, a knowledgeable ecologist, whose talk ranged from the global to the local, encouraging all attending to do what they could to limit their adverse effect on the environment, and to care for native wildlife. The Chairman gave a short report on the progress made over the year, and mentioned, with gratitude, the supporters who have joined the work parties. The One & Only Editor Kris Thomas meets 90's pop legend Chesney Hawkes star of this year's Worthing Theatres Pantomime - for an exclusive interview with the 'pop prince'.

I met the affable Chesney Hawkes at the Worthing Assembly Hall for the Snow White Pantomime press launch in early September. Chesney is playing the prince in this year's Worthing Theatre's production, and as well as meeting the press, the cast were meeting up for the first time. Chesney was relaxed and easy to chat to, his boyish, casual looks not testament to his hectic lifestyle split between the UK and his home in Los Angeles. "Yes I do have a lot of air miles" he tells me.

"I'm constantly on the road" he says "back and forth all the time, sometimes even every couple of weeks".

Chesney tours a lot and at the time of our interview he had just finished the festival season. He also did an acoustic tour this year plus worked on cruises for

the first time. "It's tough at times being away from the family" he says but told me he still enjoys being out on the road. Chesney comes across as genuinely upbeat and lively, the only time he sounds a little weary is when I ask him when he gets to see his family, "Not very often at the moment" he sighs, "I'm trying to figure out how to make that work a bit better.

Thank goodness for Skype" he adds.

Now in his mid 40s Chesney has enjoyed a varied show-business career since the age of 19 when he appeared as the title character in the film Buddy's Song. In March 1991 he released his biggest hit single "The One and Only" from the film's soundtrack.

The catchy pop song is one of the most well known 90's tracks.

On the subject of his most well-known hit, Chesney claims the song now "has a life of its own" and has developed a bit of a cult following over the years. The single was number one in the UK charts for 5 weeks in March and April 1991 and number one in many other countries across Europe as well as Japan and it also made it into the top 10 in America. When I ask Chesney if he still likes the song that made him famous he tells me 'yes' but adds, "I've had my ups and downs with it over the years". The song was written by good friend Nik Kershaw and Chesney told me he was glad that Nik wrote it although, of course, he would have loved to have written it himself.

28 People & Events Chesney is an experienced performer, describing himself selfmockingly as "a Thespian darling!" He has appeared in West End shows and discusses the pressure of performing to a West End crowd, "West End audiences are very demanding! 'Impress me' they say, also if you're not getting the numbers, you're out! There's always a show waiting in the wings to take over". I ask Chesney about his biggest influences, "Top would be Beatles, in particular John Lennon, then Prince, Bowie, The Kinks, Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello".

Born in Windsor (someone needs to update Wikipedia), Chesney grew up in Sunningdale Berkshire and has lived in West London for most of his life until five years ago when he moved to Los Angeles where he has a wife and three children aged 16, 14 and 11.

Chesney told me the children are now old enough to "cope without daddy" but that "the youngest is feeling it and doesn't like me being away so much".

His proudest achievement aside from having a massive hit single is his children. "Gotta be the kids" he says "definitely my best creation". He continues, "they are very much into music and performing arts, my eldest son is at a 'Fame-like' school in LA, he's a 'theatre kid' basically and he loves all of this. Last year when I did panto I brought him along to some of the shows and he ended up being in the show! So the kids are very much following in my footsteps". I ask him if his wife (also a Kristina spelt with a 'K') approves of this, "she does and she doesn't you know, and I'm the same" he says, "it's tough, being a working actor and musical theatre is a really hard road actually, you have to be incredibly talented and even when you do get the good jobs it's still not really great money, unless you're in Hamilton in the West End or something".

Chesney's future plans include a new album of Americana songs which he is currently putting together plus lots of touring which has already been set up for next year. He continues to write and produce music for other people in LA. Chesney says he prefers a very specific brief when writing for other people, "if you know what they want, then you've got more of a chance of not wasting time!".

"I'm not really one for regrets" he tells me. "Even where things didn't work out it has brought me here to where I am now, the highs as well as the lows have

30 People & Events / Competition made me who I am personally and professionally. I'm happy, I wouldn't be who I was right now if it wasn't for the ups and downs".

I ask Chesney about his favourite Sussex places, "I do love Brighton, it's a real melting-pot, they call it 'London by the Sea'. It's a very vibrant city and I've always had a soft spot for Brighton, I love the fact that it's a small community kind of town but very mixed with all sorts of different people." By contrast on his home in America, "LA is a massive, sprawling metropolis with no real centre, we live in the valley, just on the other side of the hill from Hollywood. We are ten minutes from the crazy centre and are only about 40 minutes from Malibu so can still get to the beach".

Chesney told me he was excited to be part of the Snow White production, "I love a bit of panto" he told me. Snow White is Chesney's fifth appearance in a pantomime so he knows the drill and admits he enjoys being cast as the romantic lead role but "would love to play a baddie" - watch this space!

Village Larder Turkey Ingredients Turkey (See our Christmas form enclosed or online for full turkey prices, all orders must be in by the 10th December)  ‘Washington Wonder’ stuffing (only available @village_larder)  2-3 tbsp duck/ goose Fat  3 carrots, roughly chopped  3 celery sticks, roughly chopped  3 onions, quartered  Salt & Pepper 

How to cook your turkey 1. Pre heat your over to 230°C/450°F/Gas 8 2. Stuff bird’s neck cavity with our ‘Washington Wonder Stuffing’ 3. Scatter the roasting tin with celery, carrots & onions, to elevate turkey and flavor gravy later.

4. Sprinkle with salt & pepper, rub generously with duck/goose fat then place it breast side down in roasting tin and cover tightly with a double layer of foil.

5. Cook the bird at the pre heated oven temperature for the first 30 to 60 minutes

SUSSEX LOCAL deepening on the birds size, before reducing the heat to 190°C/375°F/Gas mark 5.

6. When there is 30 minutes cooking time remaining, open the foil and turn the bird onto its back to brown the breast. Test fork on the inside of thigh, ensure that clear juice run out.

7. Remove the turkey from the oven and leave to rest for a minimum of 30 minutes.

Gravy Tip: Save left over veggies and turkey juices from the roasting tin to make the perfect gravy.

Mash the veggies and heat the juices with a 3 tbsp of plain flour, this will make a thick Roux, then slowly pour a glass of wine & chicken stock into the pan, continuously stirring until it thickens.

Sieve, Season and Serve.

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib, Principle Designer of Glorious Gardens Highdown Garden - A heritage garden at our doorstep Highdown Garden in Worthing is one of the best green secrets in the Sussex. It is the biggest and finest chalk garden in the UK with wonderful tree and shrub specimens and a mecca for anyone who wants to know what they can grow if their garden is chalky and therefore alkaline.

“There is myself and two other full time workers plus we have an apprentice at the moment and a volunteer two days a week who was the daughter of the Head Gardener who worked here many years ago.

“This is the finest chalk garden in the UK and we have the National Collection of Sir Fredrick Stern Introduced Plants here. We have the largest Cotoneaster in Europe and reputedly the biggest Himalayan Musk Rose outside of China.” He points to an absolutely exquisite and delicate tree. “And that is the largest Chinese Weeping Hornbeam in the UK”. The sun pours through the delicate leaves. “The seed was brought back by Reginald Farer in 1913.

We have a lot of berry trees for Autumn interest as it is mainly a Spring and Summer garden in terms of colour.”

It is also a very atmospheric garden, a labyrinth of small and larger spaces with different levels including a fish pond, a larger pond at the foot of the chalk cliff and lawn areas for children. Originally the area was a lime quarry in the 18th Century where chalk was burnt to produce lime for agriculture and building.

The lime building is still in the garden.

In 1909 Sir Fredrick Stern, a rich Edwardian, bought up the site and tried to turn it into tennis courts. However glare from the chalk cliff put players off and Stern went about trying to solve the problem by lowering a workman on ropes to try and dig out planting pockets in the chalk to plant and hopefully cover up with plants the whole of the cliff face. When this failed a love affair ensured, as Sir Stern spent the rest of his life leaning and experimenting with plants to create a garden that would grow on chalk.

He sponsored some of the great plant collectors of the day to go to China and other far flung places to bring back seeds so he could continue his experiments. For example, as you enter the garden a huge avenue of Pittisporums welcomes you. They were planted right at the beginning of the birth of the garden in 1909.

In the 1970’s another passion was born. Gary Prescod as a child used to grow plants on his little balcony in South London. He went on to study Natural Science at Cambridge University and the Chelsea Physics garden. He is now Head Gardener at Highdown and loves the place.

Also there are so many documents that relate to the garden that I don’t have time to go through and archive. Apparently there were over 500 species of plant introductions here at one time.

We have so little time we haven’t even got a proper audit of what is still growing.”

Unbelievably, entrance to Highdown incurs no cost and is upkept by Worthing council, as in 1967 Sir Stern’s widow passed the garden onto the people of Worthing so they could enjoy it for free. (Their beautiful flint mansion is now the hotel that can be seen next door.) The garden receives up to 30,000 visitors each year but it is so intricate that it retains an intimate feeling.

Places to visit Obviously it is the time of Christmas Fairs, Arundel by Candlelight and ice skating at the Pavillion in Brighton are just a few things to do!

Don’t worry if your garden looks messy.

The more mess the better for wildlife that needs a place to hide away during the winter. You will have time to clean your beds in Spring. Laziness now is creating a 5 star hotel for wildlife.  However where needs must, continue to rake up leaves and store them separately from the summer’s grass clippings as they need a different process to break down quickly.

What can you do with your old tech?

With Christmas just around the corner, you may be wondering what to do with your old computers and gadgets. Something I do quite often is fix up busted old PCs and laptops, install a secure and lightweight operating system on them like Linux and then use either for myself or my kids. With the addition of Linux they make a great and inexpensive gift for security conscious parents to give to their children.

What if a device cannot be saved? Is it destined for Silicon Heaven and the community tip, or can you do something else with it? I know from experience that old CDs make good bird scarers. Just tie a string through the middle and hang them around your fruit and veg.

The keys from old keyboards lend themselves to several uses, because they are easily detachable and can be stuck to things. Fridge magnets anyone? How about a decorative picture frame with a personalised message?

A quick search online will return lots of ideas with instructions for making things from old PC and laptop components. Petworth Literature Week - Poetry Event Local school children share their poems What a fantastic finale to a week of creativity! As part of their programme this year The Arts Society West Sussex provided a poet in residence during Petworth Festival Literary Week.

Rachel Long, poet, worked with children from seven primary schools in the area, Storrington, Wisborough Green, Petworth, Bury, Fittleworth, West Chiltington and Cold Waltham in a series of six workshops in which children were given the opportunity to write as freely as they chose in a series of guided exercises which culminated in poems based on the idea of Freedom.

Rachel Long was shortlisted for Young Poet Laureate for London in 2014. She was awarded a Jerwood/ Arvon Foundation Mentorship for Rachel Long Poetry a year later.

The resulting poems were astonishing. Some moving, some thoughtful, insightful, witty, revealing, ambitious and above all inspiring. The week ended with a public sharing of the work at The United Reformed Church in Petworth on 4th November where, to a packed room, the children shared the poems they had written. It was a remarkable climax to a week where children were given the opportunity to have their creative voices heard and poet Laureates named for each school.

The Arts Society West Sussex, is an association which meets monthly for lectures on the arts. Young Arts, is to foster and encourage The Creative Arts in young people by supporting or creating events and opportunities for young people aged 5 - 25. Young Arts has this year supported a theatre performance for children in Bignor Park, held a very successful Popup Art Exhibition in The Petworth Festival in July. From Einstein to Bill Gates there are lots of quotes about learning being a lifelong journey which means everyone - including staff - at Storrington Primary are on their personal journey to expand their learning.

Alongside the more usual curriculum areas of reading, writing and maths we include lots of other experiences and teaching that will help pupils to develop a lifelong curiosity and love of learning: this is accompanied by pastoral care available to every child to support their well-being. Encouraging growth mindset (for pupils and staff!) is key and as well as learning about values that can support good decision making. Physical wellbeing has been shown to underpin mental health and we encourage healthy eating through the school as well as running a cooking club giving older pupils the opportunity to learn how to create healthy meals.

Other activities that can enhance physical well-being are also available - even a yoga club during some lunchtimes!

We encourage staff to continue their learning journeys. This can be through our training INSET days which cover anything from Wellbeing to creating an exciting Science curriculum and by encouraging staff to pursue their specialisms: we are very proud that two of our teachers are Senior Leaders in Education (SLEs) who offer a consultancy/advisory service to other schools in need as well as being West Sussex and Locality Moderators (people who in effect teach and review how schools across the authority judge pupils work to check for consistency across the county).

A leaky restaurant

Firstly, I must thank those readers who pointed out the two errors in last month’s Sussex Local article. England’s world cup victory was, of course in 1966 and Francis Chichester sailed solo round the world in 1967. I hope my surveying is better than my memory!

When you enter a restaurant, you can be excused for only noticing the detail of only the eating areas. There is frequently another side to such buildings, which, like any other property require regular maintenance.

These days many eating houses have food hygiene rating stickers in the windows, though their display is not yet obligatory. Look for a ‘number 5’… That’s a good start!

Over the years I have surveyed many such buildings.

In one Brighton takeaway shop I found rats, and food being prepared by a bare footed employee sitting on the floor. Alright, it was some 25 years ago, but the memory lingers on. Sanitary areas vary from very poor to impeccable, but all too often there are taps left running, cisterns overflowing and cracked chinaware.

I was reminded of these problems only recently when I was called in to solve the problem of rainwater leaking

SUSSEX LOCAL into a restaurant dining area. The building was leased to a national high turnover food chain, and whenever it rained, their clients were getting wet. The cause of the problem was not clear to see. The restaurant management were very concerned to rectify the issue since their reputation was hard earned, and so easily lost.

I turned out at short notice and made my way to the roofs, all of which were approached by an external rusting stairway. Plus, the asbestos profiled sheet roofs were in generally poor condition, but with care I could see an obscure section of guttering that was completely obstructed with vegetation and last year’s seagull’s nest. Very often valley gutters formed between two pitched roofs are the cause of water ingress issues during periods of heavy precipitation.

On a commercial building clearing gutters is a specialist operation using water jets, special brushes and pipes. The same system can also be used on residential buildings where gutters are in need of cleaning after the Autumn leaf fall. Easily sorted!

Nano beauty Editor Kris Thomas reviews a Microneedling treatment at Sure Aesthetics, Capel In the perpetual quest to challenge the aging process, a Spanish dermatologist has devised a treatment which stimulates the collagen and elastin found naturally in facial tissue. I was told that this treatment called Nanopore Microneedling will help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, help reduce pigmentation and truly make the skin look the best it can be. It all sounded great and the trip up to the clinic at Capel off the A24 north of Horsham took just 25 minutes from Storrington.

Sarah Horwood, trading as Sure Aesthetics, has been offering this treatment for 16 months and it has proved extremely popular with her clients. Some travel from as far afield as Oxford and Wales for regular treatments.

Sarah told me that her client list is growing fast and most of her work comes from recommendations. Sarah has undergone advanced approved medical courses and has over 20 years experience in her field, she is also a qualified clinical trainer.

Sarah’s clinic is just off the A24 at Capel accessed via a little wooded grove. The clinic is bright, spacious and spotlessly clean. I enjoyed a detoxifying herbal tea as I completed the standard patient health questionnaire, then I was shown through to the treatment room.

Sarah used C-VIT products to thoroughly cleanse my skin and prepare it for the micro-needling. The products smelled wonderfully fresh and fruity. A tailor made CVIT Mesotherapy solution was then applied to my skin. This is an active product which is 10 times the strength of a normal skin care product. It soaks down to the dermis layer which is where the new cells form.

Then it’s time for the micro-needling... I have to say I was a little anxious but Sarah’s friendly and confident manner put me at ease. The treatment uses an electric pen-type instrument which has six minute needles on the nib. During the treatment these move in and out at a very high speed causing 400 “micro punctures” per second as the stylus is moved gently over the surface of the skin. It sounds a little extreme but piercing the skin in this way causes a very mild ‘controlled injury’ which is what stimulates production of the all important collagen and elastin. This is why the treatment works! Collagen gives skin strength and is the main component of the body's connective tissue. About 80% of the dermis (the part of your skin under the outer layer) is collagen. Elastin enables your skin to stretch and is also found in connective tissues throughout the body but mostly in the skin and the internal organs. When the skin is ‘damaged’

collagen and elastin come to the rescue to heal and repair the injury. At the same time the micro-needles push the Mesotherapy solution deep into the skin.

The treatment does not hurt but feels a little ‘scratchy’. I was able to chat to Sarah about holiday plans and our shared interest in cycling and before I knew it the stylus was switched off. The treatment was concluded with a rich and soothing face mask and the total treatment time was around an hour.

I was told that my skin would feel warm and look like I had been out in the sun and not to use make-up for 12 hours.

Half an hour later when I returned to the office, my colleagues said I looked ’glowing’ (translation: ’shiny’) however I had to concede that after all the ministrations my skin did feel plumper and the fine lines definitely appeared diminished. Top marks!

Over a week after the treatment my skin seemed to enjoy an extra ‘boost’. One bright sunny morning, I caught sight of myself sans make-up in that downstairs mirror which normally makes me look about 200. I don’t know if it was the treatment or a week off the wine, or possibly a combination, but my skin looked amazing, felt really smooth and those pesky smile lines looked more like the pre-children lines I used to worry about eight years ago! I was very impressed with this result after just one treatment and vowed to assist my body in it’s tussle with Old Father Time by cutting down the wine more often.

Environmental issues were covered in detail and there were artists impressions of all 3 options shown on a video presentation. Of concern are the A boards outside the Post Office and in Place Villerest, and the banners at the end of Nightingale Lane. Proposals will be discussed at the next meeting.

The planned village map display boards in the car parks and the tourist publicity leaflet should also help reduce the need for A-boards and banners.

Storrington & District tourist publicity leaflet 18 businesses have registered an interest in advertising on the leaflet. The car park displays are being reviewed at this evening's Parish Council meeting and Tracey (Parish Clerk) will check whether it is acceptable for the same map design to be used for the leaflet. Neighbourhood Wardens Kieran proposed this for discussion at the next meeting: to consider whether there is support and possible funding for a scheme.

Business Cyber Security Horsham District Council is holding a free event to advise businesses on this topic. Unfortunately it clashed with the meeting. The club has asked if the Police Cyber Security Advisor could give a presentation at a future meeting.

Christmas Eve opening times - Sunday 24 December The club discussed what opening times others were planning to operate on Christmas Eve, a Sunday this year. It was suggested that it's beneficial for there to be consistency of opening times so that the village doesn't appear closed when a number of retailers are hoping to do business. The concensus was that retailers opening that day will close at 4pm Next meeting - Wednesday 29 November, 8am The club meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 8am. There is no charge to join. Storrington Remembers This year marks the centenary of Storrington’s Roll of Honour. In 1917, the centre panel was unveiled by Miss Petre and her sister Mrs Powell to commemorate those from Storrington or connected with the village who had lost their lives in the Great War. Two further panels were later added.

Today the Roll of Honour, now back on the wall of the White Horse Hotel in Storrington after being lost for many years became the focus for Remembrance in the village on the 11th November.

In 2014, an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund supported a local community group with support from the Storrington and District Museum to research the names on the Roll of Honour. This work has been completed but there are still a few questions to be answered.

The community group which has blossomed with further lottery awards welcomes information of those on the Roll of Honour or the village war memorial especially anyone connected to Driver Ernest David Butcher who died in October 1919 and is buried in St Mary’s churchyard Storrington. Local History 51 Currently, restoration and research has begun on another Roll of Honour recently discovered and connected with Storrington’s Old Comrades Association, now the Storrington branch of the Royal British Legion. Painted by local artist Paul Hardy, it contains the names of those on the three panels but with additional names of those who died up to 1934. This work and the project will form an exhibition in 2018 to mark the end of the Great War. Storrington Roll of Honour - Article taken from Worthing Gazette, 1917 “Storrington is now in possession of a Roll of Honour, which has been presented to the village by two local residents – Mrs Powell and her sister, Miss Petre, of Mulberry House. It is the work of Mr Paul Hardy, the well-known artist, who has a residence in Church Street. The roll, which is enclosed in an oak case with a glass front, measuring about three by two feet, is artistic in design, with rich colouring, showing a representation of St George in armour. The scroll contains the names of thirteen men, either residents of Storrington or closely associated with it, who have lost their lives in the War, as well as nineteen former pupils of the College, all of them having been in residence during the eight and a half years in which Mr W. A. Fuller has been Principal.

They also are numbered among the dead. The Roll of Honour has been place in a conspicuous position having been affixed to the wall of the White Horse Hotel, and there was a slight ceremony last week, when it was unveiled by Miss Petre.”

Ashington Parish Council Neighbourhood Plan The Parish Council’s planning consultant is preparing technical Site Sustainability Assessments on all 17 of the ‘long-listed’ sites being considered for development through the Neighbourhood Plan process.

When the Assessments are complete then Site Promoters will be asked to correct any factual errors, submit any comments and whether they will support provision of some/all of our identified community infrastructure & needs on their site. It will be interesting to see what proposals come forward.

We should remember that, despite any ‘tempting offers’, development should be prioritised to sites within the Built-Up Area Boundary (BUAB) and, if this does not generate sufficient new homes then brownfield sites immediately adjacent to the BUAB will be considered. Greenfield sites immediately adjacent to

the BAUB will only be considered if insufficient homes can be delivered by the higher priority sites.

This is the ‘golden thread’ throughout the Horsham District Planning Framework and Neighbourhood Plans across the District. Where sites are considered to be of equivalent priority then residents will be able to comment on the site and any development and community benefits proposed. These comments will be taken into consideration when final site allocation decisions are made.

Even if a site is ‘allocated’ for development within the Neighbourhood Plan there is still the full Planning Application process to go through, the Neighbourhood Plan is merely a recommendation. A full map of Sites can be seen on the Parish Council website.

The Neighbourhood Plan process started in earnest in January 2016 and we hope that 2018 will see publication of our draft Plan followed by several rounds of consultation, a Parish referendum, and eventual adoption. by Anna Worthington-Leese – Parish Council Chairman Storrington & Sullington & Mobile Phone & Wi-Fi Signal At the time of going to print, Washington Neighbourhood Plan the works to install the power supply to the mast at Storrington Recreation Ground are underway. We hope that the mast is now live and would be interested to hear whether there has been any improvement to the signal quality in the village.

By the time you are reading this, I hope that the final changes to the Neighbourhood Plan and supporting documents will have been completed and submitted to Horsham District Council for its statutory consultation period.

As most of you will know, the process to complete this Neighbourhood Plan has been a lengthy one and I would like to thank all of those who have been involved for their perseverance and commitment throughout. I will continue to report our progress in future articles but if you would like any further information, please contact the Parish Office.

Another planning application has been submitted by Harlequin on behalf of Vodafone and Telefonica to make improvements to the existing mobile equipment at Water Lane to provide 4G mobile phone coverage and greater mobile phone capacity. This application can be viewed on Horsham District Council’s website under the Planning section (application reference DC/17/2383).

I would like to thank Councillors Brown, Jakob and Hurley for their efforts to get the mobile phone companies to recognise the problems with signal in this Parish.

Storrington Christmas Night Don’t forget to come along to the Annual Storrington Christmas Night which is taking place this year on Thursday 7th December from 6pm.

There will be the customary festive market in Church Street and in Old Mill Square and the Italian Market will also be taking part in North Street.

Caremark of Pulborough will once again be sponsoring the Children’s Christmas Light Competition and the winning entry will be revealed on the night.

Switch on of the lights will take place at 6pm, followed by songs from the choir of Storrington Primary School. Lots of shops will be open to welcome you with festive fayre and drinks so make sure you travel the length and breadth of the village to make sure you don’t miss out on this much loved event.

Parish Office Christmas Hours The Parish Office will be closed from 22nd December and will re-open on Tuesday 2nd January 2018.

Thakeham News Community Assets Progress continues towards delivery of the Abingworth community assets. The new PreSchool building nears completion near the southern Abingworth access junction, and should open in the New Year. Specifications have been signed off on the other buildings (village hall, cricket pavilion, football changing rooms), and the steel frame of the Village Hall can now be seen. Construction and hand-over of buildings is now expected around May 2018.

Safer roads In relation to traffic calming in the Abingworth 30mph zone, in October the PC considered a strong set of resident responses to the draft ‘pinch point’ scheme and agreed some revisions. By the time you read this we expect a finalised proposal to be with WSCC Highways. In separate discussions, Highways have now

agreed to take forward a scheme of improvements to pedestrian safety at the Water Lane roundabout.

This will take several years to be delivered, including consultations on details.

New dog waste bin It is good to see many responsible dog owners using the new dog waste bin at the Abingworth football fields. The PC will be keeping the need for further measures at this and other locations under review.

Community transport plan Work continues on a community transport plan to supplement Thakeham’s poor bus service. Our aim is to run a low-emission vehicle based at the new Village Hall, but we will start smaller, by helping the Community Minibus Association to expand existing Storrington-based services to Thakeham residents. To make this happen we really need one or two volunteers to act as local scheme coordinators. If you would be interested please contact the Parish Office.
