Autumn Show & International Horse Trials

Ardingly - Sat 23rd & Sun 24th September 9am-5pm

Following last year’s success, the Autumn Show & Game Fair and the South of England International Horse Trials are back together in 2023 as one fantastic event.

Guests of all ages (and their canine companions) will enjoy this jam-packed autumnal outing. Throughout the weekend, there will be a variety of countryside sports, displays, and have-a-go activities, all aimed at celebrating the joys of rural life and equestrian pursuits.

Riders at the top of their profession will compete in the showjumping, dressage, and cross-country. Those looking to get involved in the action can try fly casting, archery, axe throwing, and other activities. Dog lovers will enjoy terrier racing, long dog and skilled gundog displays and exciting scurries in which their own dogs can participate!

There will be farm animals, falconry, a funfair, and much more for children to enjoy. Plus, there will be plenty of food and drink stalls and shopping opportunities.

Tickets are £13.05 for adults and £11.25 for senior citizens/students (inclusive of a 10% advance discount until 15.9.23). Under 16s go free (suggested donation £2 for children 5-15).

Charity & Community news from across the counties

Sussex Police Commissioner Katy Bourne has renewed the contract to support crime victims to Sussex charity Victim Support. The charity also covers specific provision for victims of hate crime, fraud and specialist support for children and young people.

A West Sussex firefighter team have completed the 100 miles South Downs Way by bike to raise more than £1,500 for the Fire Fighters Charity in memory of two former colleagues, Mark Butler and Simon Constable. You can donate at www.justgiving.com/sdw2023.

The Leader of West Sussex County Council, Cllr Paul Marshall, has joined other local government and construction industry leaders in calling on the government to review the introduction of a new infrastructure levy, which has been proposed in the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill. Cllr Marshall said: “The infrastructure levy is something I strongly oppose as the expected changes would mean that West Sussex County Council would no longer be a statutory consultee on future planning development in our county.”

Shoreham Harbour is set to benefit from a grant of £300,000 to support climate change and biodiversity projects as part of the Joint Area Action Plan (JAAP) for Shoreham Harbour. The aim of the JAAP is to transform Shoreham Harbour into a vibrant, thriving waterfront destination providing new homes and jobs and by consolidating port activities in the Eastern Harbour Arm to ensure the Shoreham Port continues to play a vital role in the local economy. The Low Carbon Across the South and East (LoCASE) programme has come to a close, having handed out £913,185 in grant funding to West Sussex businesses. Delivered in partnership with West Sussex County Council, LoCASE gave grants and support to help businesses become more energy efficient and lower their carbon footprint. 107 businesses - including here at Sussex Local - received grants, together investing a total of £2,694,464 in a range of energy efficiency upgrades, from LED floodlights to new energy-efficient kitchen equipment. An estimated 445 tonnes of carbon emissions will be saved as a result.

Local residents agree with Adur & Worthing Councils that proposed improvements by National Highways to the A27 between Worthing and Lancing will not address congestion issues in the area. The £20 million earmarked is far below the £320 million for the Arundel bypass, and public consultation showed over half of respondents felt the plans did not go far enough to reduce delays or improve reliability. The proposals included some road widening and changes to access points but with no funding yet for new cycling and pedestrian routes.

They work to challenge discrimination, racism and inequality experienced by Gypsy, Roma, and Travelling people whilst helping people to understand their rights. Writing a Will

Writing a Will is one of those tasks that often goes overlooked. However, the benefits of creating a Will extend far beyond just financial considerations. A Will acts as a powerful document that can provide peace of mind to loved ones and ensures the smooth transfer of assets after you have gone.

Crafting your Will enables you to have full control over the distribution of your assets after you die. By explicitly stating your wishes, you can ensure that any property, investments and personal belongings are distributed how you want. You will often hear me coin the phrase “Your Will, Your Way!” This can prevent confusion, reduce the likelihood of disputes and it can eliminate the need for expensive legal processes.

A Will is not just about assets though, it allows you to protect your loved ones in various ways. Guardianship provisions can be included to designate who will care for children, additionally, a Will can provide some security for elderly or dependent family members who require ongoing support.

There are also many options to leave financial help to the Charities closest to your heart.

The absence of a Will can leave loved ones in a difficult and emotionally challenging position. Having a roadmap in place can sometimes relieve them of the burden of making complex decisions during an already distressing time. It provides a clear set of instructions, making the estate settlement process smoother, faster, and less stressful. By avoiding intestacy laws, a Will also minimises unnecessary costs and preserves the value of the estate for your beneficiaries.

At Nsure we believe writing a Will is a responsibility that we should all embrace. Beyond the financial considerations, it allows you to take control of your legacy, protect the people who matter the most to you and alleviate difficult decisions after you have gone.

Transforming access to life saving treatment. By Lynn Smith

Diarrhoea is the second biggest killer of children worldwide, around 500,000 die per year. Even though the efficacy of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) given with zinc, has long been recognised as a simple solution, 85 percent of diarrhoea cases are not treated with ORS and zinc. The problem, it seems, has been getting the message and the anti-diarrhoea kits out to those who most need them.

In 1986, Simon Berry OBE and his wife Jane were working on the British Aid Programme in north east Zambia. Simon had spent twelve years working on the programme and he and Jane had three children under five years old. They were shocked to learn that, amongst their Zambian peers, one in five would die of simple causes, like diarrhoea, before their fifth birthday, and the couple resolved to do something about it.

Thus, the idea that became ColaLife was conceived. Although Simon Berry tells me, “This was before the internet and we had no phone in NE Zambia. So, it incubated for a while.” Then in 2008, their youngest child left home and Simon and Jane went to Facebook to publish their basic idea: “The co-distribution of medicine with CocaCola, making use of the unused space between the bottles.”

A question posed by Simon - “Why is it that you can get Coca-Cola wherever you go in the world, but you can't get life-saving medicines?” – gave the charity its name.

“The idea,” Simon says, “went viral.” Throughout 2009-10 they approached existing global child health organisations with the objective of them taking on ColaLife’s idea and network but found little interest. Then in June 2010, Simon and Jane gave up their jobs to focus on raising the funds necessary to test out their proposal themselves. In 2011 ColaLife was granted charitable status and, following successful fund-raising, in December 2011 they ceased to be volunteers. In 2019 the World Health Organisation (WHO) added copackaged ORS and zinc to its Essential Medicines List. By the end of 2020, sales of the kit reached 1.36million, which represents nearly 1.36million lives improved, with the Zambian government being the largest customer for the co-pack.

“Building an impact that lasts way beyond our

Now living in Coldwaltham, Simon tells me that he and Jane have carefully built the organisation’s guiding principles, the key one being that they do nothing that requires them to be a permanent part of the solution. The couple’s withdrawal from the organisation has been planned from the outset, so that, “Things will not collapse when we leave.” ColaLife also, “Respects and works with existing local organisations and within local systems, customs and procedures.” And, “Working in partnership, around an agreed mission not around us or a pot of money. This helps the partnership survive without us and deal with blips in funding.” Interestingly, the principles suppress the brand itself, as Simon says, “Our presence is only temporary. Parents in Zambia have never heard of ColaLife.” The Commercial format of the anti-diarrhoea kit is branded as Kit Yamoyo (Kit of Life) and there is a governmentbranded version too.

Established a high-level engagement with the Coca-Cola Company

As the initial idea behind CoalLife was to codistribute a pack containing ORS and Zinc, using the unused space – the spaces between the bottles - in Coca-Cola crates, establishing highlevel engagement with the Coca-Cola Company

was imperative. Through this process the organisation learnt how, “Coca-Cola gets their products everywhere. Put simply: they design aspirational products and then market them directly to consumers; they then put their products into the distribution chain at a price that enables everyone involved to make a profit while at the same time ensuring that the product has a retail price that is affordable.”

Simon applied these same principles to an antidiarrhoea kit. “Although our initial focus was on the private sector, the Zambian government took on the product and now distributes it free at health clinics as well.” He also emphasises that, “The Coca-Cola Company’s involvement was during the pre-trial phase and was advisory; they never asked for anything in return, and we did not receive funding from Coca-Cola.”

Extending global reach

After the scale-up in Zambia, Simon says, “We looked at how we might have a global impact and decided this would be best achieved by changing the WHO guidelines for diarrhoea treatment. As always, we worked through other organisations and in partnership to achieve this. Since 2019, in response to our application, the

WHO now recommends that ORS and Zinc are co-packaged for the treatment of diarrhoea in children. In 2021 we co-founded the ORS and Zinc Co-pack Alliance (ORSZCA) to accelerate the uptake of this new recommendation by national governments.”

A husband-and-wife team

Simon tells me that for the trial and scale-up in Zambia, ColaLife received ‘project funding,’ i e funding directed to a specific project but that the organisation now benefits from ‘Strategic funding,’ which allows funds to be used in a way that the organisation feels most useful – within

agreed parameters. “This Strategic funding,” granted from the private, Isenberg Family Charitable Trust, “Has,” Simon says, “been absolutely crucial to our success.”

In terms of staffing, the charity is just Simon and Jane. “There are no additional staff and never have been.” Although ColaLife does use volunteers, who, in the past, have helped with product design, graphic design and data visualisation.

“Currently,” Simon says, “we are looking for a data analyst to help us with two more papers aimed at the academic press.” In terms of governance the organisation has a volunteer board that currently has five members.

Thousands of people have contributed to ColaLife

In recognition of his work, Simon was awarded an OBE in the 2023 new Year’s Honours List for Services to Global Child Health. However, when I congratulate him on his achievement, Simon is keen emphasis that ColalIfe’s impact is not just down to one man.

“ColaLife has won many awards over the years including ‘Product Design of the Year’ in 2013 and the ‘GSK / Save the Children Healthcare Innovation Award’ in 2015. These help enormously with profile and credibility. The 2015

award came with £300,000 which enabled us to leverage the additional funding we needed for the scale-up in Zambia.

“Awards bestowed on me personally I am hugely grateful for but are a bit more problematic. Thousands of people have contributed to the impact that ColaLife has had, it’s not just been down to me.” Amongst those contributors is Jane Berry, who Simon says, should have a fifty percent share in his OBE.

A charity that has achieved what it set out to achieve …

ColaLife has faced many challenges over the years, “But nothing that we’ve not been able to overcome.” Simon acknowledges that funding is always an issue with charities but that ColaLife has mitigated this by keeping small, agile and sharply focused on a single issue. Plus it has never had premises to maintain. At the end of this year ColaLife will close down gracefully having achieved what it set out to achieve (and a lot more).”

Are you ever too old to strength train?

Personal

Age means a natural reduction of the amount of muscle on our bodies, which means a reduction in our strength too. Of course, this means a change to your figure, but more importantly less strength also means decreased motor control and balance – which means higher chances of falling. Strength training can reduce your risk of injury in general by maintaining and improving your strength and coordination.

Age impacts our brain too as brain function declines. After 40, our brain function declines by about 5% per decade, and accelerates once we hit about 70. While there are no definite numbers, it has been repeatedly shown that those who maintain their fitness see markedly less decline in brain function.

When you’re starting strength exercise, or you’re going back to it after a break; there are a few things to keep in mind (regardless of your age):

• Start light. Don’t let your mind convince you that “some is good, so more must be better”. Start easier than you think you should. Gain confidence and skill before making things harder.

• Keep the intensity low. It’s always better to do less and to do it consistently, than it is to go all out too quickly or too often and hurt yourself.

• Work on mobility. The older you are, the more likely you are to have some kind of injury or postural deficiency which makes some positions harder for you to achieve. Keep working on your mobility.

In summary; you are never too old to improve your strength – it is inactivity that we should be wary of!

Hilaire Belloc - The Politics of Living

“A complex man” a new book on the famous poet by local author

Today Hilaire Belloc is remembered for his outrageous verses for children and his moving and poignant poems about the landscape and people of Sussex.

Local author and historian, Chris Hare, has recently published a new book on Belloc, showing there was much more to him than poetry. He was a complex man with deeply held beliefs, whose brief but tempestuous career in politics ended with disillusionment. His warnings about the growing power of the financial and banking system, the dangers of big government, and threats to the environment, all appear very prophetic today.

Chris has very personal reasons to be grateful to Belloc, which he discusses in the introduction to the book.

LMC Auto Services at Pulborough station Repairs, servicing & MOTs for cars, light vans & motorbikes

Well established local garage LMC Auto Services, at Pulborough Station, have expanded their operation to include a roadside recovery service. Following extensive renovations in 2020 when they took over the adjoining property, the business now employs a team of ten including owner and head mechanic Lee Cripps.

Lee told us; “We are continuing to grow and are very pleased to be able to offer a roadside recovery service. It can be a really horrible experience to break down but friendly advice and help is just a phone call away.”

LMC Auto Services has come a long way since Lee started the business as a mobile mechanic, visiting customers in his trusty Escort van! The company has now been at their premises at the Station Approach Estate in Pulborough for over ten years. Lee told us that they can undertake work on all makes of cars and light vans including servicing and repairs to brakes, clutches, suspension, cam belts and exhausts together with engine/gearbox rebuilds and electrical diagnosis. The business also offers assistance to motorbike owners including servicing and MOTs. Lee also told us they can undertake work on new vehicles which can save customers a fair amount on main dealer service charges whilst protecting the manufacturer’s warranty.

LMC is also a keen supporter of charities and schools and frequently assists local fundraising efforts. Lee is happy for schools and charities to get in touch about sponsorship opportunities.

Lee was pleased to confirm that he is a member of Check-a-Trade, the Good Garage Scheme, Buy With Confidence, RAC approved garages and trustmygarage.com submitting to regular inspections and adhering to their codes of conduct.

Lee’s friendly disposition makes him popular with his many regular customers. He told us he aims to offer “first class service at competitive prices” and that he and his fully qualified team of mechanics have a genuine aspiration to “help local motorists who trust us with their cars”. Lee thinks that little extras, such as free collection and delivery within 10 miles, free vehicle wash with a service and an online discount on MOTs, keep his customers happy - and happy customers recommend others.

The perils of speeding

Fines of up to £2,500 and instant bans can be levied

Getting caught speeding can lead to fines, penalty points, speed awareness courses or even driving bans depending on the severity of the offence. For minor offences, the police have 14 days to issue a Notice of Intended Prosecution.

Drivers may be offered a speed awareness course, which involves paying to attend a half-day session, instead of getting points on their licence. Whether this is offered depends on the police force.

More serious speeding offences over 10% plus 9mph of the speed limit rarely qualify for awareness courses. The minimum penalty is a £100 fine and 3-6 penalty points. Not responding to the police within 28 days can lead to the matter going to court. Very serious offences go straight to court, with fines up to £1,000 or £2,500 on

motorways. 12 points in 3 years leads to disqualification. Instant bans are only considered for significant speeding, like over 51mph in a 30 zone or 85mph in a 60 zone.

Bans range from 7-56 days but can be up to 120 days, after which driving tests may need to be retaken. Courts consider road conditions and consequences of lost licences. In summary, minor speeding may lead to awareness courses while serious speeding leads to large fines, points and potential driving bans. The courts do have some discretion around driving bans which could include factors such as if you were speeding for an emergency or if losing your licence could cost you your job.

snails and they first appeared on the planet 550 million years ago, equally at home in the tropics, desert or deep water.

The largest is the African snail with a record of 38cm long and the smallest is .8 of a millimetre.

Shelley has up to 14,000 little teeth that rasp bits of leaf off. They can take about a week to travel one kilometre, have a small lung to breath, and are deaf and almost blind despite their popping out eyes.

Their sexual habits are amazing. Hermaphrodite, they can circle each other for up to 6 -12 hours in a slime fest, and then when they are ready, they shoot love darts into each of their bodies. The mucus on the tip of the dart activates their spurm retaining systems to better aid conception. After

They have represented the Deadly Sin of Sloth in the past, and have been eaten in most cultures, even in Scotland during famines. Some cultures eat their eggs which are known as White Caviar. Shelley hates direct sunlight and their mucus trail, serving as a slimy path to slide on, works best at night when there is no sunlight to dry it up. They will often ride along another snail's slime path. During Winter they block the entrance to their little shell and hibernate underground. They live between 2-5 years but in captivity they can live up to 25 years!

A snail form Egypt lay dormant in a glass cabinet in the British Museum for over 100 years before it started moving again, living for a year and a half.

Gardening 35
Yellow garden snail

Whilst we generally hate them, they are a vital source of food to toads, birds, beetles, mice and hedgehogs.

Every Garden Advice show has a snail question. Recently the RHS did a large experiment using all sorts of physical barriers and none were proven to be effective!

My friend recently picked off over 100 from amongst his vegetables, and did this every night for a week. By the 7th day he could hardly find any- so perhaps the best method is to manually remove them. However, if you are thinking of chucking them into your least favourite neighbour’s garden think again. In 2010 Mrs Brooke won the British Amateur Scientist of the Year award by painting snails with nail polish, then carrying them into a nearby woodland. Most eventually retuned, proving they have some kind of homing device. She suggests a 300 foot buffer zone would be effective! There are other methods of reducing the Shelleys of this world. The Soil Association approve Ferric phosphate though the RSPB

warns that it also includes other chemicals which aren’t good for worms.

There are the beer, yogurt and fruit traps, nematodes especially effective against slugs, or you could think about creating a lovely lettuce patch for them and so distracting them from the real vegetable patch.

Whatever your relationship with Shelley, they have lived on the Earth more than half billion years. That is something!

Breaking barriers with open-plan living

Picture this, you're coming back home from a long day's work, pushing the door open, expecting the usual maze of partitioned rooms, low light, and shadows. But, today, it's different. Today, you walk into a stunning, expansive, and brilliantly lit space that simply takes your breath away. Welcome to the transformative power of open-plan designs.

Historically homeowners have been drawn to the segregated comfort of room-based living. However, over recent years, the rise of the openplan design, a concept that is redefining homes, creating a new harmony between architecture, light, and space.

You see, walls aren't just physical barriers,

This removal of partitions allows the home to breathe, to grow, and to adapt to the rhythm of life that is uniquely yours.

At the end of the day, an open-plan design isn't just about tearing down walls, it's about creating a sanctuary that brings family closer together. It's about transforming a house into a home, and it can be easier than you might think.

There are plenty of experts, all of which are capable of carrying out the work. But the important thing is finding the right one for you, and that’s where the anxiety often kicks in!

Whilst the process is normally relatively simple, there are still quite a few moving parts – from structural calculations, obtaining planning permissions (if extending the property), carrying out the work, delivering the finishing quality you

A Rough Guide to Planning Permission

Ensuring building & development is controlled & sustainable

When considering any extension or home improvement, always consult a professional and get official advice from experts. Here are some key points regarding planning permission in the UK.

1. Planning permission is required for most forms of development, including new buildings, extensions, and alterations as well as change of use.

2. Minor changes may fall under permitted development rights, which allow certain types of development or change without any need for formal permission. Check with a professional.

3. The Local Planning Authority (LPA) grant permission. They are usually part of the local council. Each LPA has their own Local Development Plan which sets out policies and guidelines.

4. Planning applications must be submitted to the LPA. The application usually includes architectural and site plans and supporting documents describing the proposed changes.

5. The LPA has to consider various factors including impact on the neighbourhood and local environment, disturbance to neighbouring properties,

infrastructure, and making sure the plan complies with local policies. Also whether there have been any public objections.

6. The LPA can grant planning permission with or without conditions, refuse permission or defer a decision. Permission may be temporary or permanent or subject to renewal after a specified period.

7. In certain cases, the LPA require a public consultation or notification, allowing residents to raise any concerns. Stakeholders can also be involved at this stage in planning larger or more controversial developments.

8. If planning permission is refused or granted with conditions that could be deemed unfavourable, applicants have the right to appeal. The Planning Inspectorate are an independent government body who review cases. During the appeal, any additional information is gathered and a planning Inspector makes a final decision.

Please note that regulations vary between different regions within the UK so you should always seek professional guidance.

White Lion Thakeham, dining review

Delightful, dog-friendly country pub. By Kris Thomas

Situated in a picturesque narrow lane in its own attractive garden is Thakeham village's only Inn, The White Lion, where I recently visited with my family for Sunday lunch. The weather was favourable so we elected to eat al fresco at one of the comfortable rattan tables. The tables are spaced sufficiently far apart so diners do not feel cramped and the surrounding garden provides a pleasant atmosphere and is dog friendly (as is the whole pub). Originally an old coaching inn, the interior retains the ambience of a typical country pub and offers a selection of cask ales, spirits, wines and cocktails to suit all tastes. The lunch time menu offers a good selection of starters, main and dessert courses including vegetarian alternatives. Being Sunday, a traditional roast seemed to be eminently suitable for our party of four (including an 11 year old).

We were tempted by all the starters and the smoked salmon proved to be a generous portion of flavourable fish whilst the Yakatori glazed chicken wings provided an extremely tasty alternative to more traditional starters. All were nicely presented and the service was very friendly and efficient.

The roasts did not disappoint and again generous portions were served with the most incredible roast potatoes I think I have ever tasted. There were at least five accompanying vegetables including cauliflower cheese, leeks beans and tenderstem brocolli. The vegetables were prepared in such a delicious manner that the 11 year old consumed even those he had never before tasted! Those whose offspring refuse to eat their “greens” should take note!

The dessert menu offered the most indulgent array including chocolate and salted caramel profiteroles, lemon meringue pie with raspberry sauce, White Lion Eton mess and Affogato. All were so beautifully presented that it seemed almost criminal to actually eat them! I would say that this did not deter us from doing just that, with obvious relish!

The White Lion maintains the village pub feel and is obviously popular with visitors and locals alike. The staff are friendly without being overbearing and the service was excellent. Even the family dog appeared to enjoy the experience especially when a menu blew conveniently close and was promptly chewed! There can be few more congenial ways of spending a Sunday lunchtime than to savour good food in good company in such delightful surroundings. Bookings/info: 01798 813141 www.whitelion thakeham.co.uk

In recent years, demand from investors to align their portfolios with their personal values has increased. As everyone’s values are unique to them, many ethical investment strategies have been developed.

Strict Ethical Screening – This involves excluding companies operating in certain sectors such as fossil fuels, tobacco, or gambling.

Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) – This involves finding profitable companies that are also involved in sustainable practices such as environmental stewardship, consumer protection, human rights, and diversity. This emphasizes financial returns as a secondary consideration after the investors' values.

Environmental, Social and Governance Investing (ESG) – This involves analysing a company’s environmental, social and governance related risks, often to help reduce risk.

Impact Investing – This involves investing with the purpose of delivering measurable social benefits as well as financial returns. An example could be investing in a specialist fund that focuses on renewable energy.

Guide dogs & learning through drama

Guide Dogs for the Blind

The children were extremely fortunate to welcome Carol to our school worship recently. Carol is blind and came to speak to the children about how she manages day to day life without the sense of sight. Carol taught the children how she has learnt to travel safely on roads, buses, trains and aeroplanes and how she does her weekly shopping. Guide Dogs for the Blind is the children’s charity this year and it was great for the children to learn how the charity helps to transform the life of those living with a vision impairment. The children were also lucky enough to meet Carol’s guide dog Laila and learnt about how dogs are selected and trained to enable them to become assistants for those who need support.

Learning through drama

Willow and Chestnut classes were recently visited by the Rainbow theatre, who brought to life

traditional tales for our Reception children and life in Ancient Greece for our Year 3 & Year 4 pupils. Through drama, the children were immersed in different stories or time zones, to help deepen their understanding of stories and/or the past. Additionally the children dressed up, helping them to fully participate in the experience. Our philosophy is: learning is for life and we endeavour to nurture this attitude within everyone in the school community through the development of skills and a growth of knowledge.

Storrington Primary School

Summer term sports & performance

Children, staff and also families have been enjoying Storrington

Primary’s broader curriculum this term with many fantastic opportunities. To kick start this term, we held our annual sports and healthy living week.

Along with the more traditional sports day, children made the most of our wonderful facilities by entering the triathlon, long distance run and swimming gala. These events really do bring out the camaraderie and team work at Storrington. It was heart warming to see children supporting and cheering each other through some personal challenges. Over 70 children chose to enter the triathlon, the most challenging event of the week - swimming, cycling and running!

As well as the sporting part of the curriculum, children have also excelled at performing. The juniors rose to the challenge of appearing in the school musical, Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical jnr. They shone on stage to three packed performances and wowed the audience with singing, acting and dancing of a high quality.

These are just some of the extra activities Storrington has organised this term, they wouldn’t have been possible without a dedicated and hard working team of children, staff and families.

This event coincided with English Wine Week and gave us an opportunity to launch the Sussex Wine Tourism Plan, funded by the Government and led by Sussex Modern, Plumpton College, and our local councils. The plan sets out an ambitious strategy to boost the industry to attract even more tourists to our county.

Summer also brings a familiar challenge to many Sussex communities: unauthorised encampments of vehicles or caravans. One such incident recently occurred on Pulborough recreation ground. This year, however, things are different. I was pleased to see the police intervene swiftly, clearing the space within 24 hours using the new powers available to them thanks to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022. I supported this Act in Parliament, and I am pleased to see it reducing the time it takes to clear encampments which would otherwise be treated as a civil matter. This is a real example of a new law improving lives for Sussex residents on the ground.

Green initiatives in Ashington

Ashington Parish Council intends to launch a number of green initiatives in the village, encompassing nature recovery projects, recycling and sustainability.

Councillors attended a “Wilder Horsham District” workshop earlier this year. A partnership between Sussex Wildlife Trust and Horsham District Council, it is in itself part of the larger “Weald To Waves” initiative aiming to create a 100 mile wildlife corridor from the High Weald to the Sussex Coast. This is due to a background of dramatic decline in British wildlife.

The aim is to reverse the decline in species and habitats and enrich the natural environment for all residents and visitors to the local area. Key to this environmental work is the development of ecological networks which create wildlife corridors to allow species to move freely from place to place. These are known as Nature Recovery Networks.

At local level, potential projects could include wildflower strips, no mow areas, mini meadows, community gardens and orchards. People could be involved in re-establishing gardening and horticultural clubs, or help by recording garden wildlife numbers. There are many small actions we can take to improve the habitat for our flora and fauna.

Further projects would look at recycling and sustainability and how initiatives can be introduced in Ashington.

Ashington Parish Council would love to hear from people that have any ideas, expertise, or simply wish to be involved. Please contact the clerk who will pass your details to the relevant parish council committee.

Storrington & Sullington Parish Council

Update, August 2023

Neighbourhood Wardens

You may have heard by now that the Parish Council has decided to renew the Neighbourhood Wardens Scheme for a further three years from March 2024. This decision was taken at the Parish Council Meeting on 28th June following three public consultation sessions to gauge the opinion of the community.

97% of those who submitted comments were supportive of the Wardens and wanted to renew their contracts.

Ali has sadly left for pastures new and by the time you are reading this, the recruitment process to find a partner for Chris will be well underway. He hasn’t been resting on his laurels though and will be hosting another Fun Day at Storrington Recreation Ground on Monday 21st August from 11am to 3pm.

Swift Boxes

We are very proud to have provided a boost to our green credentials by working with the Sussex Wildlife Trust to bring swift boxes to the Parish Hall.

During the summer months, swifts migrate from their wintering grounds in Africa to the UK, where they embark on an intensive breeding season. Sadly, swift populations have been declining in recent years and conservation groups across the UK are working tirelessly to protect and provide suitable nesting opportunities. The boxes are usually mounted under the eaves of buildings or on external walls, and as we are aware that there are already swifts in the area, the Parish Hall seems like an ideal place to install them. We hope to have our first residents next year.

Councillor Drop In Sessions

We will shortly be arranging drop in sessions for members of the public to meet some of our Councillors in an informal atmosphere to raise any matters of concern. Watch this space for dates and times.

Washington Parish Council

Update for May 2023 from Cllr Patrick Heeley

Rampion 2 Cable Pipeline Route: The Rampion 2 wind farm developer has now confirmed their proposed cable pipeline route, running up from Clymping, through the centre of Washington Village, and onward to meet the National Grid at Bolney. The proposal is imminently due to be submitted for a Development Consent Order (DCO). The Planning Inspectorate will have about 4 weeks in which to decide if the application meets the necessary standards for examination. There will then be a pre-examination stage at which individuals and groups can register as an Interested Party, to make relevant representations to an appointed Examining Authority.

Washington residents roundly rejected the proposed route through the village, ducted underneath the Recreation Ground/ Allotment plus associated access roads and compounds, at a public meeting in September 2021. The parish council has made clear that it supports wind farm proposals in principle, but asked Rampion to look again at the various options to create a route that avoids the village, along the lines of its original plan (Route A). Sadly, there has been no response from Rampion to these requests.

Speaking at Washington’s Annual Parish Meeting in March, MP Andrew Griffith confirmed his opinion that Washington would be the most affected parish on the route, and that he fully supports the submission made by the parish council. It was clear that Rampion were not listening to local views. In a recent newsletter, Mr Griffith states that he “supports the submission made by Washington Parish Council who are outraged that the cable corridor will now dissect the village instead of taking a route around the south of the village as they had previously proposed.”

Planning Development: A controversial plan to build a 60-bed care home and 8 age-restricted bungalows on the site of Old Clayton Kennels, a countryside location on the A283 between Storrington and Washington, has been given approval by Horsham District Council. A similar application had been rejected in January, but the revised plan included minor modifications to the bulk. Over the years, re-development of this site has

consistently been rejected, including a failed planning appeal in 2016.

The application was strongly opposed by Washington Parish Council, Storrington & Sullington Parish Council, and the Millford Grange Residents Association. The site had been specifically rejected during the formation of the joint Storrington, Sullington & Washington Neighbourhood Plan, which received public consent and became a “made” plan in 2019. The parish council argued that it was inconceivable that planning officers should now consider recommending development here which would directly undermine the Neighbourhood Plan, and open the door to further speculative applications, contrary to the Plan, within the area.

Both parish councils and the neighbourhood plan steering group are now considering how best to make a formal complaint regarding this decision.

Join the Parish Council: As can be seen from the preceding paragraphs, there is much going on in the parish, and we need further volunteer councillors to help us tackle these issues effectively. There are vacancies in both Washington and Heath Common wards. If you are interested in your local area and community, please consider joining the parish council – members come from all walks of life, and the council has no political affiliations. Please contact the clerk for more information.

New Chairman and Vice Chairman: After 10 years as Chairman of the council, Cllr Patrick Heeley decided to stand down at this year’s election, whilst remaining a member of council. We are pleased to announce that Cllr Steve Buddell is elected as the new Chairman, with Cllr Tony Lisher taking the role of Vice Chairman.

Allotments: We currently have some vacant plots available – details from the clerk.
