HELLO! November is a busy month with Guy Fawkes night on Sunday 5th and Remembrance Sunday on the 12th. Many local communities will gather to watch armed forces personnel, cadets and members of the Scouting organisation parade and lay wreaths in memory of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. You many also have heard of “Movember” a month-long charity event when men grow moustaches to raise awareness of male health issues. Since 2016 Movember has raised over £25 million towards men’s health and wellness initiatives. Our charity article this month is on Carers Support West Sussex. An esteemed organisation doing so much for the many unpaid carers in our community. If you know of a West Sussex charity in need of recognition please get in touch. All charity articles are offered free of charge and promotion in these pages not only raises awareness but can lead to much needed donations. This month is also the start of Christmas fayres and markets, putting us in the mood for another festive season! Carers Support West Sussex…
Offering support to unpaid carers in the county. By Lynn Smith NHS England, defines a carer as “Anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid. Carers Support West Sussex (CSWS) is the amalgamation of three organisations who saw fit to become one. Registered with the charity commission in 2008, the charity is now fifteen years old and has been growing from strength to strength as the need for support of carers has grown. Sonia Mangan, CEO of Carers Support West Sussex, says that there is a nationwide need to provide support to these carers. CSWS is West Sussex’s support for those who are caring for someone. The charity is dedicated to offering unpaid carers the information, guidance and emotional support they need, whether the individual’s carer journey is a sudden responsibility or a lifelong commitment. “It’s (CSWS) aim is to deliver a well networked and supportive approach to each carer in the county, in the city, town or village in which they live, providing local solutions to family and friend carers.” Why is the charity necessary? Carers UK has provided key national facts that give context as to why the charity is needed: Over the period 2010-2020, 4.3 million people became unpaid carers – 12,000 people per day (Petrillo and Benett, 2022); fifty-nine percent of unpaid carers are women (Census 2011), women are more likely to become carers and to provide more hours of unpaid care than men, and more women than men provide high intensity care at ages when they would expect to be in paid work (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). Also, one in seven people in the workplace in the UK are juggling work and care (Carers UK, Juggling Work and Care, 2019) and between 2010-2020, people aged 46-65 were the largest age group to become unpaid carers. In fact, 41 percent of
people who became unpaid carers were in this age group (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). CSWS offers guidance and practical and emotional support Accessing this support, Sonia Mangan explains, begins with the carer making contact or being referred to CSWS, by a professional who has recognised a need for support. The carer discusses their caring situation with a wellbeing worker who can assess the best course of action. The charity doesn’t subscribe to the belief that one size fits all. In fact, they believe that every caring situation is different and should be treated with the respect and dignity deserved. One way of achieving this aim is via a statutory carer assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the help and support which could be provided to the carer, which may include access to equipment or services offered by the council. During the assessment, common topics of discussion include: The carer’s role and how it affects their life; how the carer feels about caring and the options available; and the carers health and wellbeing, including physical, mental and emotional problems the carer might be having. The assessment will also discuss the carers relationships, social life and recreation, as well as employment, training, studying and volunteering, and planning for emergencies. All the support on offer to carers is completely free of charge. If a carer would like to join a carer group – whether that is face-to-face or online – or If they wish to receive carer benefits advice, or arrange for a

volunteer to do a regular check in and chat, all they need to do is register with CSWS. A twenty-six percent increase in carer registrations CSWS has over 30,000 carers registered and has seen a staggering twenty-six percent increase with them. During 2022 – 23, 5,301 new carers were registered with the service. And, according to the charity, the number of monthly registrations just keeps climbing and climbing. The charity points those carers who are new to caring, or those looking for more information, to the Carers Smart Search, accessed via the CSWS website. This simple tool takes a couple of minutes answering questions and guides the carer to the information they’re seeking. If the carer cannot find what they’re looking for a phone call to the charity should provide them with the help they need. Defining success CSWS’s vision, Sonia Mangan says, is to bring the day forward when family and friend carers are seen, heard, and included. During 2020, the charity’s trustees, employees and volunteers worked together with carers to review who CSWS
are, what they aspire to and the actions needed to achieve these aspirations. “The vision and the strategy are the driving force of the organisation. And so, success is defined by how we stack up against that vision and the six strategy aims.” There is regular consultation with carers to establish if their needs have changed, to ensure we are delivering the right services at the right time. We also constantly ask carers to give us their opinions about how we are performing. And with ninety-nine percent of carers saying they would recommend CSWS to other carers

Carers Rights Day – Thursday 23 November 2023 Each year Carers Rights Day brings organisations together to help carers in the local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. This year the campaign will focus on the ways in which caring costs unpaid carers. Events will be running throughout the week and CSWS encourages carers to book their places in advance. Predominately funded by local government contracts CSWS receives most of its funding from West Sussex County Council (WSCC) with the remaining funding coming from grants and other trading facilities. Currently, CSWS has 118 employed members of staff and 73 volunteers. The charity relies upon the support of volunteers who Sonia Mangan describes as “Fantastic and assist in all areas. Last year,

volunteers contributed an incredible 146,704 minutes of volunteering. The volunteer run “check in and chat” telephone befriending service provided 20,910 minutes! Which helped carers feel more socially connected. “We are in the process of reviewing our volunteer roles, but will very much be recruiting for new volunteers very soon – so keep an eye out for the roles on our website. When I ask Sonia what the greatest challenge is facing CSWS, the response she gives is, sadly, a common one amongst the charity sector. “One of the greatest challenged faced by the charity is the ability, with the resources given, to keep up with demand. CSWS wants to ensure that each carer is given the time they deserve, which may mean that waiting lists may be longer than the charity would like. Planting Advice and Care The packet that the bulbs arrive in will normally tell you the depth and spacing for planting up. If you are planting in clumps dig a whole section of the bed up of about 40cm in diameter rather than try to plant them individually. Bulbs as a rule need very well drained soil so if you are in a lot of clay really prepare the soil well with grit and organic improver and even then you will have to experiment with what survives. If you have planted in pots make sure they don’t dry out which is possible if we have a dry Autumn or Winter. Bulbs like a mulch feed whether in pots or in the open ground so this can done now after you have planted them. If you deadhead the old flowers once they have finished then you will stop the plant having to produce seeds which can weaken it. Most people though like to leave the old seedheads of Alliums to dry out as they look very sculptural over the Summer and Autumn. Lastly if you leave the foliage to die back naturally then more of the energy of the plant can return to the bulb increasing its health.

Over the past two years, 12,000 children have enjoyed a school trip thanks to the South Downs National Park. It’s hoped applications for the next round of grants will open in January, subject to further funding. www.southdowns.gov.uk/learning/ grants-for-schools/ £100,000 is being invested in the South Downs National Park to help establish over 5,000 hectares of interconnected woodland across Hampshire and Sussex that will help wildlife thrive. The investment is coming from Estee Lauder, based in the National Park at Petersfield. Once established, the South Downs woodland initiative will contribute significantly to the UK's journey to achieving Net Zero by using woodland creation to sequester greenhouse gases. Aldi stores in Sussex donated 28,000 meals to families in need over the summer school holidays. All of its Sussex stores supported local charities and foodbanks during a period of increased demand by redistributing surplus food via community giving platform Neighbourly. West Sussex County Council have completed a £1.8m surface dressing treatment programme on 44.5 miles of roads. 20.6 miles of roads were also treated with a surface sealant which will prolong the life of the dressing on roads. The future of Drill Hall, Horsham Lifespring Church has approached Horsham District Council (HDC) with a proposal to reinvigorate Drill Hall. The church submitted a proposal to acquire the building and develop it as a community hub and conference centre, as well as its administrative base and a place of worship. Services they are hoping to offer include use for a family hub, toddler groups, after school and holiday clubs, youth services and a community café. As well as running courses and providing advice on topics such as life skills, debt advice and budgeting, the church is also keen to see the space used for musical practice and performance, as an art gallery and for conferences, meetings and events. Charity & Community News Horsham District Community Lottery To celebrate turning four years old it is giving local charities and good causes the chance to win £500. If new organisations can go live with the lottery by 8 December, they will be entered into the draw. Existing lottery organisations will be entered automatically. It’s a weekly draw, tickets are £1 each. Selling just 50 lottery tickets a week will raise £1,300 a year for your good cause. There is no limit to how many people can buy tickets to support your charity. For every £1 donated: • 50% goes to the good cause, paid out monthly • 10% goes to Horsham District Community Lottery Central fund to further fund Horsham District Council’s Lottery Good Causes. • 20% goes to the prize pot • 20% goes to lottery admin/running costs Any local not-for-profit or charity can apply.

Optimal fuel economy is achieved between 30-50 mph. Above 50 mph, fuel economy drops rapidly. Use cruise control on motorways to avoid speeding. Reduce idling Idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine. Cut idling time by turning off your engine if stopped for more than 30 seconds. Exceptions include heavy traffic jams.
Lighten the load Extra weight reduces fuel economy, so remove unnecessary items from your car. An extra 100 pounds can reduce efficiency by up to 2%. Also avoid using roof racks when not needed. Check tire pressure Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance which reduces fuel economy. Check pressures monthly and before long trips. Creamy baked gnocchi With seasonal squash & spinach Ingredients • 500g seasonal squash of your choice, deseeded and cut into small chunks. • 1 tbsp oil • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • ½ bag spinach, washed • 250g Tims Dairy natural Greek yogurt • 80g gruyere, grated • 500g gnocchi • 2 tbsp pine nuts • Seasoning Method 1. Place the squash in a heatproof bowl with a splash of water and a pinch of seasoning, cover, and microwave for 5 mins or until tender, or alternatively you can roast for 25-30 minutes in the oven with a little olive oil. 2. Meanwhile heat the olive oil in a large oven proof dish and fry the garlic and cinnamon for 30 seconds until sizzling but not coloured. Add the spinach, season and cook until wilted.
3. Roughly mash half the squash. Stir the mashed squash and the yogurt into the spinach, then add 150ml of water and stir until you have smooth and creamy sauce. 4. Combine half the gruyere into the spinach mix and add the gnocchi and remaining squash chunks into the dish. Simmer for 1-2 minutes until everything is heated through, you can add a splash of water if the mixture is thick. 5. Two options for losing weight By Heather Smith - Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Two Options for Losing Weight Option 1 - Cut your intake drastically, increase your activity and hold on tight. Option 2 - Make sustainable changes to your diet and exercise habits. Now, no one is going to tell you that option 1 won’t work. It will work, and it’ll work quickly. But, you’ll reach a long lasting, hard plateau fairly quickly. Then, you’ll need to cut your intake and increase your activity further and further – until you’re surviving on a tiny amount of food and spending all your time exercising. Worse, if you dare to take a couple of days off, or eat a little more, the weight will stick to you like glue. Sadly, this is a position many find themselves in.
Option 2, however, will get off to a bit of a slower start. Not much seems to happen at first but then the change starts to accelerate and snowball. This approach is much more sustainable both in terms of the habits you’re putting into place and in terms of the results you will see over the long term. It’s kind of like delayed gratification, except it’s not, because you’ll almost certainly never reach your goals with option 1. So, if you’re looking for true last-for-life results, don’t be tempted to do the most you possibly can – instead, do what is genuinely sustainable for the long term and work at consistently putting these changes into place.
