The Ourstory Archive at The Keep in Brighton shows how the UK's most popular international Pride Festival began as a small annual march against Section 28. Sometimes called Clause 28, this was the Conservative’s government’s response to the LGBTQ+ community’s demands for equality in the late 80s. Becoming law in 1988, it banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality by local authorities. The LGBTQ+ people of Brighton fought back, forming ‘Brighton Area Action Against Clause 28’ or BAAAC28.

The strength of the LGBTQ+ community in Brighton today has its origins, in part, in the activism and the endurance of BAAAC28. Labour repealed the law in 2003. www.thekeep.info.

Summer success for young equestrians

It has been a very busy few months for an equestrian team from Steyning Grammar School. On 11th June they came second at the Felbridge showground qualifying them for the national championships at Addington in October. Then on 30th June they competed at the prestigious All England jumping ground at Hickstead, followed by gaining a team first place at Coombelands Showground in July. Kitty Lovell placed second individually and Tilda Angell was eighth. Megan Duke rode a lovely clear round to help her team to first place. All girls were fantas-

tic and all supported each other through the competitions. The team members pictured left to right at Hickstead are: Kitty Lovell (13); Tilda Angell (14); Tabitha Shillingford (12). Megan Duke (14); Storrington Conservation news

Painted lady migration patterns and other migratory insects:

Every year, Southern England becomes the stage for a remarkable sight when 3.5 trillion flying insects, equalling the weight of 20,000 reindeer, migrate across the country! Among these in-sects are the Painted Lady butterflies, the subject of a recent discovery among scientists and butterfly enthusiasts.

The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) has a 4-7.3cm wingspan and often populates dry open areas. Every spring they journey from their overwintering grounds in North Africa and the Mediterranean region to the UK, Asia and Northern Europe. These butterflies obtain average altitudes of 500m, can reach 30mph in favourable conditions, and can do a 9000-mile round trip from Africa to the Arctic Circle! For many years it was a mystery where Painted Lady butterflies went in the autumn, whether they died in the UK or made a return journey, as they fly at such a high altitude and could not be seen by butterfly observers. It was recently discovered that the Painted Lady butterflies do make a return journey in autumn, returning to favourable temperatures further South.

These butterflies are unique due to their migration being the longest-ever recorded flight for butterflies. These migrations can take generations, as they lay their eggs in the UK, and the offspring continue the migration South to southern Europe and North Africa, although not all participate, and some may not survive the harsh UK winters. As they undertake continuous, year-round mating, painted ladies are able to stop, breed and die at locations along the migration route.

How do they know when to start the migration?

The caterpillars of Painted Ladies grow while the days are lengthening, to then fly northwards, and when the days shorten the butterflies know to travel south to warmer climates.

Painted Ladies are the only butterflies found in Iceland and since the 1970’s their population has increased by 32%! In the UK they feed on, amongst other plants, Teasels, Ivy, Ragwort, Heather and Hawkweed.

Although the migration of Painted Lady butterflies is one of a kind, other migratory insects are worth keeping an eye out for.

Sometimes we experience mass migrations of insects in summer and autumn. Between 10 and 25 billion medium and large insects move back and forth out of regions in Britain. This includes hoverflies for example, where 4 billion come to and from Britain each year, and they are essential for pollination and natural pest control.

Mass migrations truly can be a shocking sight, for example in World War 2, military observers reported a ‘golden ball’ drifting over the channel and thought it was poison gas, only for it to be migrating Clouded Yellow butterflies.

Painted lady butterfly

We also host other insects on their migratory journeys, such as the Red Admiral. This butterfly is extremely common in spring and throughout summer too, usually spotted near flowers such as Buddleia. They make their journey from North Africa and continental Europe, arriving in the UK in Spring. They lay their eggs in the UK, meaning new butterflies are around from July onwards.

We also host Hummingbird Hawkmoths in Spring, which usually live in Central Asia and in the Mediterranean region. They are named for their similarity to hummingbirds, feeding on nectar using their long beaks. Hummingbird Hawkmoths have very good memories, and often return to the same flowerbeds every day at the same time. They breed in the UK, and due to their inability to survive the winter they make return migrations in Autumn.

If you are lucky enough, you might be able to spot a Monarch Butterfly which makes occasional, sporadic appearances in the UK. It is believed that strong winds may carry individual Monarch butterflies across the Atlantic Ocean

into the UK. They’re native to the US and can fly up to 100 miles per day. Migratory insects that visit the UK undertake incredible journeys driven by instinct and environmental cues, playing an important role in pollination, pest control,

Where to go in September

September tasks

• Watering - keep up in sustained hot weather. For years now we have been having sunny and dry Septembers

• Top up mulch to retain moisture and keep weeds down

• Keep pinching out tomatoes

• Sow new rills of lettuce, radishes and spinach

garden developed by Lady Collum for over 40 years, it features a series of interlocking rooms, each one with a different purpose and feel - a herb garden, pool room, water rill room and classical sandstone summer house. The garden is lovingly tended with an eye for detail and simple colour palettes.

It is open to the public just a few days of the year: www.clintonlodgegardens.co.uk

• Prune the bigger shrubs that have finished flowering like Wygelia, Philadelpus, and Sprirea- cut out the old flowering wood back to new growth that next year’s flowers will bloom from. A harder cut of the Wysteria can wait till January so just lightly trim at the moment.

• Mow your lawn on a higher setting now to keep moisture in the grass to help mitigate against summer browning in dry spells

• Start planning where you want your bulbs to come out in Spring. You can order them online now for planting until November.

Loft conversions with a view

Raising the roof by Nick Roberts RMR Group

Velux balconies

Who needs a garden when you can have a balcony in the sky? Velux balconies – the relatively unknown diamond loft conversions - make this fantasy a reality.

This architectural marvel doesn't just provide an extra room. It promises sunrises with your morning coffee and sunsets with a chilled glass of wine, all from the comfort of your own home. Velux balconies are not just an upgrade to your home, they're an upgrade to your lifestyle.

A room with a view

Transforming your loft into a balcony might seem like reaching for the stars, but the sky is not the limit - it’s just the view. Yes, we're quite literally suggesting a room with a view, and perhaps even a few starlit dinners. Remember those spaceships you imagined as a child? Well, this is your launchpad. That's the power of creative construction. It's about seeing not just what's there, but what could be there.

So, as you sit with your morning cuppa and glance towards the ceiling, let your imagination soar. After all, as the saying goes, the best view comes after the hardest climb – or in this case, after a phone call to your local architect and construction company! robertsmillerredshaw.com

Horsham most sought-after region in W.Sussex

More people are moving to Horsham according to recent study

A new study conducted by conveyancing solicitors, Bird & Co, has uncovered the most popular regions to live in West Sussex, having analysed Office of National Statistics net migration figures.

The study breaks down the stats by County and includes statistics on net internal migration, average house prices and the average ages of people migrating to the region.

According to migration data, people moving to West Sussex are moving to:

1. Horsham, 640

2. Arun, 514

3. Chichester, 420

4. Worthing, 414

5. Mid Sussex, 390

6. Adur, 107

7. Crawley, -132

Based on ONS data from 2021 released in December 2022, West Sussex’s average house price is £498,117. In Horsham, the average house price was higher at £458,212.

In West Sussex, the majority of the population is below the age of 40, except for the district of Arun, where a significant proportion falls within the 65-69 age group.

The study also looked at the most popular counties in England and Wales, revealing the most popular places to move to. West Sussex came 7th whilst neighbouring Hampshire was in 1st place. Full report on: www.birdandco.co.uk

Feel like you’re failing with your goals?

It’s hard to make changes consistently

In fact, most people I meet have a pretty good idea of what they need to do in order to reach their health and fitness goals, but struggle to put things into action.

Set yourself up to win!

When you feel stuck and as if changes just won’t stick, set yourself up to win.

Pick one thing you can do today which is so easy that it would be ridiculous not to do it.

Make yourself do whatever it is today, whether you feel like it or not. Then, count it as a win.

Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel like you can do a little more – or perhaps you feel you’re better to do the same thing again for a

few days before you add on any more. There’s no right answer. Setting things up so you win often is a great way to give yourself some positive experience with your goals.

When you win, you want to win again

Your goal becomes something you can successfully take steps towards, and not an unsurmountable task – and that makes the mental portion easier.

Never underestimate the power of taking small steps consistently. Things don’t have to be perfect for you to be winning.

Nutrition for children

Helping youngsters to make good food choices

Childhood is a particularly important period for forming positive behaviours related to nutrition. Children who learn and practise positive eating habits from an early age are likely to make healthy choices when they grow up. Here we explore some ways to help promote positive eating behaviours: stick to regular meal and snack times.

• A regular eating pattern that forms the basis of a healthy, balanced diet

• Providing three meals, and two or three snacks a day is ideal for children

• Keeping mealtimes regular creates predictability and encourages a healthy appetite

• Set a good example

In the long term, children and young adults are more likely to learn from how we behave rather than what we tell them. The more we can be a role model about healthy eating habits the better! Set an example to your child by showing them how you make healthy choices and how you practice positive eating habits; this could be

something as simple as choosing to eat a wide variety of foods, or by ensuring you drink plenty of water. Also, family mealtimes offer an excellent opportunity to teach children good eating patterns as well as a time to connect and talk to each other.

Children love to get involved in new things, so why not get them to help in the kitchen? Cooking with kids and getting them involved in the meal preparation process may encourage them to try new healthy foods. Small children could be responsible for setting the table, any mixing or stirring and washing fruit and vegetables. Older children could get involved with preparing the shopping list, chopping, and peeling! For more information and tips including healthy recipes, visit www.heartresearch.org.uk

Table Talk Foundation

Creating a healthier future through food education

In the UK, Obesity accounts for over 30,000 deaths each year with obesity levels having more than doubled over the last decade. Today, one in three children leave primary school overweight or obese and children in deprived areas are more than twice as likely to be obese as their more privileged peers.

Sussex based charity, Table Talk Foundation has a two-pronged mission – namely to deliver high quality food education and provide children with an insight into the hospitality industry, and to also provide mental and physical health support and financial assistance to the local hospitality industry.

The charity’s co-founder, Jessica Aggarwal, (inset picture right) says, “We believe this health crisis requires immediate intervention. We exist to create a healthier future by helping young people build better relationships with food through innovative and fun food education.”

The charity is also keen to provide support for the hospitality industry, which was hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued to suffer from the increased cost of living crisis, rising operational costs, staff shortages and from meeting demands for increased sustainability arising from environmental concerns and climate change. “The hospitality industry is the UK’s third largest industry for employment and yet hospitality faced a staggering loss of £115 billon and over 660,000 jobs during the COVID19 pandemic. Hospitality businesses are three times more likely to fail compared to other UK businesses.” Jessica goes onto say that the charity believes that the hospitality industry plays a vital role in society. “We’re transforming the hospitality industry with a strong focus on mental wellbeing, physical health and financial support. We want to encourage more young people into careers in hospitality and support them every step of the way.”

All funds are spent directly in Sussex

The work of the Foundations is funded by a mix of grants, sponsorship and Industry Partnerships. Jessica expands on the roles each play in supporting the Foundation. “We have been fortunate enough to receive generous grants from several trusts and foundations committed to creating positive change. These include The

Band Trust, Enjoolata Foundation, Fonthill Foundation, Focus Foundation and The Lawson Trust. “Through the kindness and dedication of local people and businesses who’ve sponsored local schools, we've managed to raise over £20,000. These sponsorships not only provide vital funds but also help foster a sense of community around our mission.” Additionally, the charity is, Jessica says, “Proud to collaborate with hospitality businesses that have found creative ways to raise money through customer donations. Initiatives – like adding one pound to a bill or featuring a “Cocktail of the week” – have collectively raised over £43,000. The dedication of our Industry Partners exemplifies the spirit of the hospitality industry.”

Table Talk Business Club – offering monthly events in the best independent hospitality venues in Sussex

Table Talk Foundation also has a sister organisation and Community Interest Company: “Table Talk Business Club, has been instrumental in our fundraising efforts,” and is an exclusive club for executive-level owners and key decisionmakers holding monthly events at “The best independent hospitality venues in Sussex. These events not only raise awareness of our mission but also generate vital funds to support our ongoing work.”

Founded in 2021, the charity has grown extremely quickly - from a Summer Party thrown to launch its mission to a Festive Feast in December –raising £60,000 in its first year. In 2022, the organisation hosted “nine inspiring fundraising events, raising over £40,000 – generating awareness and excitement for the Foundation and

our mission,” and March this year saw Sussex Showcase 2023 raise £22,500 for table Talk Foundation over seven days, “Fourteen chefs with twelve Michelin stars, two Great British Menu Winners and one Masterchef: The Professionals winner amongst them, collaborated to bring guests a one-of-a-kind food experience, in the most exciting restaurants Sussex has to offer.” Future events include a Christmas Party in December and Sussex Showcase in March 2024. The charity is staffed by a combination of a small number of paid staff and volunteers – trustees as well as ad hoc volunteers who fundraise and help out at events - and is, Jessica tells me, now at capacity with current staffing levels. In 2024, the aim is to recruit another chef to grow the team and meet increasing demand.

“All this growth requires more funding so our main challenge will be to bring in more donations and partnerships to ensure we can keep moving forwards.”

Ensuring the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community. When I ask how much support the charity receives from the local community, Jessica is emphatic. ”A lot! Our School Sponsorship, Industry

Partnerships and Table Talk Business Club members are predominantly Sussex based. Those attending our events and bidding at fundraising auctions are also mostly from Sussex. We believe in creating an ecosystem whereby the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community.”

The foundation also works with the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Adopt a School Trust, which brings chefs and hospitality professionals into primary schools, helping children develop healthy eating habits, enthusiasm, interest in food and learn about the hospitality industry. Table Talk Foundation has donated £50,000

to the Trust which sponsors the Foundation’s full-time Sussex-based chef and delivers food education across the Sussex region.

“I learnt so much and had such a fun time – this was the best day of school ever!” Brodie, aged 11 Table Talk Foundation has delivered food education to more than 30 schools and holiday clubs, helping over 1,200 children make informed choices and eat better, teaching skills and knowledge that will foster healthy choices throughout children’s lives. In 2022-2023 the Foundation, in partnership with Adopt a School Trust, raised £200,000 to build a bespoke training kitchen at Plumpton college. From where they can offer Chef on a Farm sessions that give children a hands-on farm-to fork experience. Jessica says, “Sessions started in May and we’ve been overwhelmed with positive feedback.”

“It was wonderful to see the children using the skills Chef John had taught them in a real kitchen. Being able to create their own lunch from scratch would have been the first time most of them would have experienced anything like it.”Primary School Deputy Head Teacher.

This year also saw the Foundation launch its Hospitality Training Programme, featuring eight

sessions and networking lunches. Entirely funded by charity fundraising, the programme is designed to develop critical skills, knowledge and industry connections to hospitality professionals in Sussex. Jessica says that feedback has been positive – with one hundred percent showing “an improved confidence rating in their ability to open safe conversations around mental health and to signpost appropriately.”

“I will be recommending that members of my management team attend future sessions.” –

Table Talk Foundations believes that, “By defending the health of individual children and fighting for industry sustainability, we’re investing in a healthier, more prosperous society. A society that celebrates fresh, whole foods, the joy of cooking, cooking from scratch and a hospitality industry that serves its community and looks after the wellbeing of its employees.”

Bury Primary School

Pupils have fun learning outside of school

On Thursday 13th July, the whole of Bury Primary School’s Key Stage Two headed over to Champs Hill in Pulborough for a woodwind-based day inspired by Beethoven’s famous Ode To Joy. The children spent the day preparing for a special concert to be held in the beautiful Music Room, in which they would play their recorders alongside West Sussex Music woodwind specialist, Jo Eames. Jo spent the afternoon demonstrating a range of different woodwind instruments with the children, before playing saxophone and flute pieces in the concert along with a flute and clarinet duet with Mr Mott. The children sang and played with enthusiasm, and left with a new world of woodwind opened up to them! Our thanks to South Downs Arts Society

Young Arts for their generous support in making this event possible, and to

Mary Bowerman of the Bowerman Trust for welcoming us so warmly to Champs Hill. And of course a huge thank you to Mr Mott for orchestrating such an amazing day for our children.

Bignor Roman Villa

For our penultimate day of term the children were all dropped off at Bignor Roman Villa ready to explore Esmae’s winning sunflower maze. Amazing teamwork, leadership and listening was on display as every team successfully navigated the sunflower maze. A huge thank you to the Tuppers for allowing us the chance to have a sneak preview. The maze was followed by a 2 ½ mile walk back to school down the old Coffin Trail. A great way to finish another fabulous year at Bury. www.bury.w-sussex.sch.uk/website

St. James’ CE Primary School Robin & the Sherwood hoodies, sports day & creative arts week

As I write this, it is the start of the Summer Holidays and it is a welcome break from all the busyness of school life. The end of the school year was marvellous with many exciting events happening!

Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies

The end-of-year KS2 production was a triumph – as the production takes place outdoors, there were a few worries about the weather but, thankfully, the show did go on and the children were absolutely wonderful! With drinks and refreshments available from Friends of St. James, the event was friendly and fun for all.

A Sports Day of two halves!

The glorious unpredictability of the British weather meant that our Sports Day ended up taking place over two days. Both of the days

were fantastic with great support from our parents/carers. The children competed in multi-skills activities and running races, working as house teams. Overall, Vikings were the winners but Saxons and Romans were amazing runners-up!

Creative Arts Week

In the final term, the children took part in a Creative Arts Week. They recreated a piece of work called the ‘Big Frieze’ which forms part of our school’s Collective Worship timetable; it outlines the ‘Big Story’ of the Bible and the children loved working on the pieces of art! We were very proud that it was displayed at the Pop-Up Art Exhibition in Petworth just prior to the summer.

St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Pulborough Reaction speed boards & Superstarters sessions

After a restful summer holiday for staff and children, the children are settling in well to their new classes and the Early Years are enjoying their free-flow time.

The new topics are proving popular - UK/Thailand (EYFS/ Yr 1) – All about Me, Italy and India (Yr 1/2) – Sensational Senses, New Zealand and Ireland (Y3) – Stone Age to Iron Age, USA and Sierra Leone (Y4) – Rumble in the Jungle, Mexico/South Africa/ Japan (Y5/6) – The Great, The Bold and The Brave – and we are looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labours. We are happy to report that most of our classes are now full, with only a few spaces in the middle of the school. This is a great reflection of our recent Ofsted inspection.

ActivALL board

At the end of last term, we were able to install 2

new ActivALL boards - ActivAll is the fantastic hi-impact reaction wall, designed for fitness, health, and fun. They combine movement, action, coordination and problem -solving and are a great ‘hit’ with the children.

Superstarters

The visitor diary is filling up for this year, with ‘Superstarter’ sessions for KS2. Yr 3 will be experiencing a ‘Stone Age Day’ on the Forest School site, Yr 4 will be hosting the Bug Man as part of their Rainforest topic and the Observatory Science Centre will be travelling over from Herstmonceux with their mobile planetarium for Yr 5 and 6 – a busy term!

Please do come and visit us if you would like to see our happy, busy school in action!

Volunteers at the heart of the community Community minibus service calling for volunteers

West Sussex Minibus is a community transport charity that helps individuals to thrive. Their mission is to enable residents to stay active and foster a strong sense of belonging to prevent isolation and loneliness.

They provide a range of practical shopping trips and social outings throughout the year. It is a membership-based service that welcomes all age groups. Eight divisions service the county, each operating buses seating up to 8 passengers to keep the service personal and friendly. For many members, the service is a lifeline, providing the chance to stay in touch with friends, visit new places and gain companionship.

As an all-volunteer organisation, West Sussex Minibus owe their continued success to those individuals who generously offer their skills and time. People volunteer for many reasons. A change in personal circumstances is where it often begins. If you are active, enjoy meeting people and have spare time, that’s all that is needed. One of the following roles may be a perfect start to your volunteering experience.

Minibus Drivers pick members up from their homes, drive them safely to the planned destination and return them home after every trip. Drivers need to be confident and hold a D1 category licence. Passenger Escorts work alongside the driver as a team. They welcome members to each trip, collect fares, help load shopping bags and assist passengers on and off the minibus and throughout the journey.

Everyone who joins understands what an essential role they play and will help to ensure the retention of vital services for the local community. To learn more about volunteering with West Sussex Minibus, Pulborough and Bury, please call 0300 772 7735.

West Chiltington Parish Council

Update for September 2023

Village Show

Obviously along with everyone we were very disappointed that the weather prevented the show from going ahead, particularly as this year we were going to present our draft 5 Year Plan for residents’ comments. This is very much a work in progress and to ensure we give everyone the opportunity to put forward their ideas, The Plan has been uploaded to The Parish Council’s website. Please do take a look and submit your comments and suggestions to The Clerk.

Some of the ongoing Parish Council projects:

• Currently tendering for groundworks so the old tractor shed foundation can be used for additional car parking.

• Tendering for groundworks adjacent to the new tractor shed to create additional surface suitable for vehicle parking

• At the request of some of the sports club members we are looking to provide ramp access to the new tractor shed to allow trolleys to help move heavier items.

• Making progress with installation of CCTV on and around the recreation ground. The presence of CCTV has been shown to deter antisocial behaviour, which we know is important to parishioners and we hope it will also support the Parish Council to pursue claims for unreported damage to property which has been difficult to achieve up to now.

• Investigating ways to correct the flooding problem at the tennis club entrance.

Refill is the new recycle!

Saturday 3rd September 2.30-5pm

Sussex Green Living bottle REFILL service popup will be at the West Chiltington Horticultural Society Autumn Show! Thanks to a grant from Horsham District Council Community Climate

Fund, West Chiltington Parish Council is working with Sussex Green Living to bring the mobile Eco Float (1974 retrofitted milk float) to park outside the village hall as part of the Horticultural Autumn Show.

In case you missed it…!

Sussex Green Living shares all the ways people can make small lifestyle changes which collectively make a big difference. The charity's main focus is conservation of natural resources through Repair, Recycling and Refilling. The eco float offers a bottle refill service, so you can bring your empty household cleaning products and personal hygiene product bottles and get them refilled. This saves production of new bottles, fossil fuels used to transport them around the world, energy to recycle bottles, reduces CO2 and global warming and saves you money because you are only buying the liquid! A win, win for all! Learn where to find your nearest refill shop here www.sussexgreenliving.org.uk/refill/

Andrew

Griffith MP

MP for Arundel & South Downs, September update

Railway ticket office closures

I know that many in our community rely on the railways, myself included as a regular commuter to Westminster. The rail industry is currently consulting on the closure of ticket offices and instead deploying the staff out onto platforms to help customers – including at Arundel, Pulborough, Hassocks, Barnham, Angmering, Petersfield and Haslemere stations. Making sure the most vulnerable can still receive the assistance they need and that our questions at stations can

be answered is absolutely key. I submitted a response to the industry’s consultation, and I look forward to the conclusions of the call for views.

Planning reform

I know that for many local residents, unsustainable development on the green places that surround our villages and small towns is a significant concern. For that reason, I am pleased that last week we received positive news on planning reform that will prevent unsustainable housebuilding whilst still delivering the affordable homes that future generations need.

The key measures that the Government announced were a shift to focus on building in urban centres, to brownfield development and to protect green spaces. It means development will be focussed on cities such as London, Cambridge and Manchester and see them grow upwards rather than outwards – something that I advocated in my very first speech in Parliament.
