SUSSEX LOCAL
Nov 2023 Cover image: Angmering Park Woods Charlie Hellewell
HELLO! November is a busy month with Guy Fawkes night on Sunday 5th and Remembrance Sunday on the 12th. Many local communities will gather to watch armed forces personnel, cadets and members of the Scouting organisation parade and lay wreaths in memory of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. You many also have heard of “Movember” a month-long charity event when men grow moustaches to raise awareness of male health issues. Since 2016 Movember has raised over £25 million towards men’s health and wellness initiatives. Our charity article this month is on Carers Support West Sussex. An esteemed organisation doing so much for the many unpaid carers in our community. If you know of a West Sussex charity in need of recognition please get in touch. All charity articles are offered free of charge and promotion in these pages not only raises awareness but can lead to much needed donations. This month is also the start of Christmas fayres and markets, putting us in the mood for another festive season! We have lots featured in our What’s On guide and more online at www.sussexlocal.net Lest we forget,
Kris & Jeff

Charity & Community News Montague Place moves closer to transformation
Montague Place will be transformed into an urban garden in the heart of Worthing town centre - and work could begin as early as spring 2024. The plans for the site include the replacement of tarmac and paving with shady trees, beautiful sustainable planting and sociable seating, creating a green gateway to the seafront and a meeting place where residents can connect with each other and with nature. The new, vibrant look and improved facilities will support surrounding businesses to thrive.
Funding for the ambitious transformation will come from Worthing’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Neighbourhood Fund. The fund is made up of payments made by developers building in the local area. www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/ montague-place-worthing/ Worthing’s West Buildings shelter The community will be asked to help decide the future of Worthing’s West Buildings seafront shelter. The structure, which was built around 100 years ago, sits on the promenade at the junction of Marine Parade and West Buildings in a conservation area, close to a series of listed Regency and Victorian buildings. It is currently home to a temporary pop-up gallery, displaying the artwork of local artists with the support of Colonnade House. The Council hopes to launch the public consultation in the coming months. In the meantime, the shelter will continue to display community art.

Findon's Pest House By Valerie Martin
The Pest House from New Cottages in 1997
The ancient Pest House stands a mile north of Findon in a downland valley. Not many villages can boast such a property. I have found that there are a number of approaches that can be made to our Pest House. Stable Lane ends at The Downs racing stables — a bridleway then leads straight ahead across Gallops Farm northwards to the Pest House. Alternatively, leaving Findon and heading north on the A.24 there is a shady bridleway a few hundred yards outside the parish boundary. This bridleway is all that remains of a prehistoric track that led to Chanctonbury. A minor road leads eastward towards the Pest House. A primitive dwelling may have been on the site of our Pest House in Saxon times when the feared leprosy was rampant. The notorious old Isolation Hospital or Pest House (originally called Pestilence House) would have been a place of detention. Afflicted lepers would have been sheltered there in an effort to prevent an epidemic of the contagious disease spreading. The inmates would have been driven from Findon’s midst, forbidden to enter the church, fair, market, taverns and alehouses and condemned to the Pest House. This would have doubtless been of timber structure, in fact probably, a thatched hut. Over the centuries, subsequent structures were built on the same site for patients suffering from pestilence, bubonic plague, or other infectious diseases.
The Pest House would have certainly been in use again in the 14th century when nearly half the population of the country died of bubonic plague. This was during the reign of Edward III when the plague arrived in the south of England from the Continent. It was the worst outbreak the country had ever witnessed and was called “The Black Death”. It arrived in Sussex in the spring of 1349 and raged through the summer spreading rapidly over a fifteen year period. No figures were kept for our area. Local suspected victims of the pestilence would have been taken from their infected houses to our Pest House and kept under enforced quarantine or imprisonment within its grim and daunting structure. Findon withstood the catastrophic event, but many villages of the same size were wiped off the map. The result of this attack on our environment meant there was a serious lacking of able-bodied villeins (labourers), to work the Findon fields for the Lord of the Manor. In the sixteenth century the average death rate in Findon was fairly constant at six in any one year. There was an higher than average mortality rate in the village during the year 1582 which points to the fact that there was an epidemic of some kind. There were fifteen deaths, including nine within five weeks in October and November, eight of whom were members of the Sumner family. Again in 1658 there was a high mortality rate in Findon, which indicates another epidemic. There were fourteen deaths. Five within a period of four weeks during October and November. The last great visitation of the bubonic plague raged in London during Charles II’s reign, from April 1665 to the Autumn of 1666. This was to become known as The Great Plague. There is little doubt that Findon would have suffered at this time too but no records have been kept. The year 1703 saw another high rate of deaths in Findon. There were seven deaths, six within five weeks in September and October, all children. Three of these were from the Scotchford family. 1733 was another bad year with thirteen deaths. In 1752 there was a smallpox outbreak in the area that most likely kept the Findon vicar busy with burials.
Local History 193
Every address every month The majority of the present property dates from the 19th century. Cholera has rampaged through Findon on many occasions. On 12th December, 1810, George Woodhatch who worked as a gardener for the vicar, the Reverend John Hind, died. Four days earlier he had completed his last full day’s work and was seized by the Cholera Morbus that night. George Woodhatch’s mother at the grand old age of 89 was so anxious to assist with nursing him, that she died from over exerting herself two days later. This left George's wife, a poor widow woman, with not one but two corpses to bury. Dozens, quite possibly hundreds, of gruesome remains of unknown corpses could lie undetected and not recorded in quick-lime graves within the grounds and foundations of our Pest House. The property can also claim to be the last house in the village to lose its picturesque thatched roof and be replaced with tiling. The property now comes under the umbrella of the Goring Estate. When I moved to Findon, the Pest House was one of the houses in Findon that still did not have any central heating. I received the following email from the late Roger Moulds… "I was interested to read about
The Pest House in 1997
Findon's Pest House. In the 1950's it was occupied by North Farm shepherd Albert Luther and his family. I worked with him during the school holidays and my first task every morning was to catch Polly. Polly was a horse which drew a two wheeled cart which carried all the shepherding implements, and in which we used to herd the sheep. Albert was a patient man but had a great sense of fun, often treating me to some of his songs, many of which were quite unprintable. I never went inside the house, so can not say anything about it. Roger Moulds, Llandrindod Wells, Powys, Wales".

Writing a Will By Will Writer Emma Cohen MIPW Writing a Will is one of those tasks that often goes overlooked. However, the benefits of creating a Will extend far beyond just financial considerations. A Will acts as a powerful document that can provide peace of mind to loved ones and ensures the smooth transfer of assets after you have gone. Crafting your Will enables you to have full control over the distribution of your assets after you die. By explicitly stating your wishes, you can ensure that any property, investments and personal belongings are distributed how you want. You will often hear me coin the phrase “Your Will, Your Way!” This can prevent confusion, reduce the likelihood of disputes and it can eliminate the need for expensive legal processes. A Will is not just about assets though, it allows you to protect your loved ones in various ways. Guardianship provisions can be included to designate who will care for children, additionally, a Will can provide some security for elderly or dependent family members who require ongoing support.
There are also many options to leave financial help to the Charities closest to your heart. The absence of a Will can leave loved ones in a difficult and emotionally challenging position. Having a roadmap in place can sometimes relieve them of the burden of making complex decisions during an already distressing time. It provides a clear set of instructions, making the estate settlement process smoother, faster, and less stressful. By avoiding intestacy laws, a Will also minimises unnecessary costs and preserves the value of the estate for your beneficiaries. At Nsure we believe writing a Will is a responsibility that we should all embrace. Beyond the financial considerations, it allows you to take control of your legacy, protect the people who matter the most to you and alleviate difficult decisions after you have gone. Go Green Behind the Wheel Eco-Driving Tips to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Here are some tips to save fuel and money while helping the planet: Drive smoothly Sudden accelerations and hard braking waste fuel. Gently accelerate and coast more while anticipating traffic patterns ahead. Cruise control also helps maintain a fuel-efficient constant speed. Monitor your speed Speeding wastes fuel. Optimal fuel economy is achieved between 30-50 mph. Above 50 mph, fuel economy drops rapidly. Use cruise control on motorways to avoid speeding. Reduce idling Idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine. Cut idling time by turning off your engine if stopped for more than 30 seconds. Exceptions include heavy traffic jams.
Lighten the load Extra weight reduces fuel economy, so remove unnecessary items from your car. An extra 100 pounds can reduce efficiency by up to 2%. Also avoid using roof racks when not needed. Check tire pressure Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance which reduces fuel economy. Check pressures monthly and before long trips. Proper inflation also enhances safety and tire lifespan. Limit air conditioning (A/C) Use A/C sparingly. At faster speeds, opening windows is more efficient than A/C. Park in shade to keep your car cooler. Schedule maintenance to ensure A/C runs efficiently. Following these simple eco-driving tips will boost your fuel efficiency, save money on fuel, and reduce harmful emissions.

Investing for your children/grandchildren By Oliver Suter DipPFS, financial adviser
Investment solutions group photo
As children go back to school let’s look at the options available to invest for the benefit of children / grandchildren. Junior ISAs Anyone can pay into a JISA although only parents and guardians can set one up. Like all ISAs, the returns are tax free. You can choose between a cash JISA or a stocks & shares JISA and can contribute up to £9,000 each year. Money is held until the child reaches 18, after which it can be converted into an adult ISA. Pensions Children can have a pension. Setting one up can bring significant tax advantages since the government adds generous tax relief on contributions up to £3,600. Saving this way may help also mitigate an Inheritance Tax (IHT) liability. Trusts Trusts can be complicated but are often used to gift money to grandchildren/ children. If you have any questions about investing for children, please get in touch.
The value of investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Capital at risk. ‘Investment Solutions’ is the trading name of Investment Solutions Wealth Management Ltd who are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

228 Health & Wellbeing
Two options for losing weight By Heather Smith - Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Two Options for Losing Weight Option 1 - Cut your intake drastically, increase your activity and hold on tight. Option 2 - Make sustainable changes to your diet and exercise habits. Now, no one is going to tell you that option 1 won’t work. It will work, and it’ll work quickly. But, you’ll reach a long lasting, hard plateau fairly quickly. Then, you’ll need to cut your intake and increase your activity further and further – until you’re surviving on a tiny amount of food and spending all your time exercising. Worse, if you dare to take a couple of days off, or eat a little more, the weight will stick to you like glue. Sadly, this is a position many find themselves in.
Option 2, however, will get off to a bit of a slower start. Not much seems to happen at first but then the change starts to accelerate and snowball. This approach is much more sustainable both in terms of the habits you’re putting into place and in terms of the results you will see over the long term. It’s kind of like delayed gratification, except it’s not, because you’ll almost certainly never reach your goals with option 1. So, if you’re looking for true last-for-life results, don’t be tempted to do the most you possibly can – instead, do what is genuinely sustainable for the long term and work at consistently putting these changes into place. I think you’ll be surprised at how well this approach works for you. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Carers Support West Sussex…
Offering support to unpaid carers in the county. By Lynn Smith NHS England, defines a carer as “Anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid. Carers Support West Sussex (CSWS) is the amalgamation of three organisations who saw fit to become one. Registered with the charity commission in 2008, the charity is now fifteen years old and has been growing from strength to strength as the need for support of carers has grown. Sonia Mangan, CEO of Carers Support West Sussex, says that there is a nationwide need to provide support to these carers. CSWS is West Sussex’s support for those who are caring for someone. The charity is dedicated to offering unpaid carers the information, guidance and emotional support they need, whether the individual’s carer journey is a sudden responsibility or a lifelong commitment. “It’s (CSWS) aim is to deliver a well networked and supportive approach to each carer in the county, in the city, town or village in which they live, providing local solutions to family and friend carers.” Why is the charity necessary? Carers UK has provided key national facts that give context as to why the charity is needed: Over the period 2010-2020, 4.3 million people became unpaid carers – 12,000 people per day (Petrillo and Benett, 2022); fifty-nine percent of unpaid carers are women (Census 2011), women are more likely to become carers and to provide more hours of unpaid care than men, and more women than men provide high intensity care at ages when they would expect to be in paid work (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). Also, one in seven people in the workplace in the UK are juggling work and care (Carers UK, Juggling Work and Care, 2019) and between 2010-2020, people aged 46-65 were the largest age group to become unpaid carers. In fact, 41 percent of
people who became unpaid carers were in this age group (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). CSWS offers guidance and practical and emotional support Accessing this support, Sonia Mangan explains, begins with the carer making contact or being referred to CSWS, by a professional who has recognised a need for support. The carer discusses their caring situation with a wellbeing worker who can assess the best course of action. The charity doesn’t subscribe to the belief that one size fits all. In fact, they believe that every caring situation is different and should be treated with the respect and dignity deserved. One way of achieving this aim is via a statutory carer assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the help and support which could be provided to the carer, which may include access to equipment or services offered by the council. During the assessment, common topics of discussion include: The carer’s role and how it affects their life; how the carer feels about caring and the options available; and the carers health and wellbeing, including physical, mental and emotional problems the carer might be having. The assessment will also discuss the carers relationships, social life and recreation, as well as employment, training, studying and volunteering, and planning for emergencies. All the support on offer to carers is completely free of charge. If a carer would like to join a carer group – whether that is face-to-face or online – or If they wish to receive carer benefits advice, or arrange for a

volunteer to do a regular check in and chat, all they need to do is register with CSWS. A twenty-six percent increase in carer registrations CSWS has over 30,000 carers registered and has seen a staggering twenty-six percent increase with them. During 2022 – 23, 5,301 new carers were registered with the service. And, according to the charity, the number of monthly registrations just keeps climbing and climbing. The charity points those carers who are new to caring, or those looking for more information, to the Carers Smart Search, accessed via the CSWS website. This simple tool takes a couple of minutes answering questions and guides the carer to the information they’re seeking. If the carer cannot find what they’re looking for a phone call to the charity should provide them with the help they need. Defining success CSWS’s vision, Sonia Mangan says, is to bring the day forward when family and friend carers are seen, heard, and included. During 2020, the charity’s trustees, employees and volunteers worked together with carers to review who CSWS
are, what they aspire to and the actions needed to achieve these aspirations. “The vision and the strategy are the driving force of the organisation. And so, success is defined by how we stack up against that vision and the six strategy aims.” There is regular consultation with carers to establish if their needs have changed, to ensure we are delivering the right services at the right time. We also constantly ask carers to give us their opinions about how we are performing. And with ninety-nine percent of carers saying they would recommend CSWS to other carers

Every address every month or friends and family, we must be doing something right. You can find out more about CSWS’s six strategy aims from the “Our Strategy for the future” report, available on the website. Carers Rights Day – Thursday 23 November 2023 Each year Carers Rights Day brings organisations together to help carers in the local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. This year the campaign will focus on the ways in which caring costs unpaid carers. Events will be running throughout the week and CSWS encourages carers to book their places in advance. Predominately funded by local government contracts CSWS receives most of its funding from West Sussex County Council (WSCC) with the remaining funding coming from grants and other trading facilities. Currently, CSWS has 118 employed members of staff and 73 volunteers. The charity relies upon the support of volunteers who Sonia Mangan describes as “Fantastic and assist in all areas. Last year,
volunteers contributed an incredible 146,704 minutes of volunteering. The volunteer run “check in and chat” telephone befriending service provided 20,910 minutes! Which helped carers feel more socially connected. “We are in the process of reviewing our volunteer roles, but will very much be recruiting for new volunteers very soon – so keep an eye out for the roles on our website. When I ask Sonia what the greatest challenge is facing CSWS, the response she gives is, sadly, a common one amongst the charity sector. “One of the greatest challenged faced by the charity is the ability, with the resources given, to keep up with demand. CSWS wants to ensure that each carer is given the time they deserve, which may mean that waiting lists may be longer than the charity would like. In this case the charity asks carers for their patience and understanding.” Contact Carers Support West Sussex The Orchard, 1-2 Gleneagles Court, Brighton Road, Crawley, RH10 6AD. Tel: 0300 028 8888. Bulbs- a guide to a colourful Spring garden When a client asks me to design a garden with all year colour, my first thoughts are normally-“Right, lots of Spring bulbs so that the rest of the beds can be taken up with Summer and Autumn flowering plants!” They are the most efficient way to have colour from January to May without taking up too much space and bulbs can be planted in areas where the trees haven’t come into leaf so they survive where other flowering plants can’t. And they are inflation busting with most coming back Allium purple sensations in greater abundance each year. Below are some tips on what and where to plant Lawn this month. It is not fashionable these days but why not plant up a large area of your lawn with Crocuses. Go for the unusual Try Frittilaria Crown Imperials, the mad looked Allium ‘Hair’, Narcissi ‘Rip Van Winkle’ or Tulipa ‘Wow’ and again plant in a couple of nice big clumps, maybe on both sides of your doorway so you enjoy them many times a day. You can also try the giant Snowdrop Leucojuim in a quiet corner of the garden. Plant in amongst other plants You can plant your bulbs in amongst evergreen ground cover which doubles the use of the space and also hides the foliage once the bulbs have finished. Try planting in amongst an area of Perriwinkle, Ajuga, Violets or even Ivy. Snowdrops are good at the base of Japanese anemones before the latter come into leaf. Bulb Combinations Try these combinations. Agapanthas and Wild Garlic, large pale pink Hyacinths with the pale blue of Miscarri Baby’s Breath, Tete-a-Tete

Successional planting Make a column where you make sure you have bulbs coming up all the way through the year as if they are passing the baton to each other. For example you can buy Very Early, Early, Mid and Late flowering Tulips and Daffodils. Also you can factor in the corm families as well with Agapanths, Cannas and Irises as well as Dahlias. There are also Crinums for the end of summer, bright pink Nerines and Cyclamen hederifolium for Autumn as well as autumn flowering Colchicums with their ghostly translucent hue.

Every address every month Planting Advice and Care The packet that the bulbs arrive in will normally tell you the depth and spacing for planting up. If you are planting in clumps dig a whole section of the bed up of about 40cm in diameter rather than try to plant them individually. Bulbs as a rule need very well drained soil so if you are in a lot of clay really prepare the soil well with grit and organic improver and even then you will have to experiment with what survives. If you have planted in pots make sure they don’t dry out which is possible if we have a dry Autumn or Winter. Bulbs like a mulch feed whether in pots or in the open ground so this can done now after you have planted them. If you deadhead the old flowers once they have finished then you will stop the plant having to produce seeds which can weaken it. Most people though like to leave the old seedheads of Alliums to dry out as they look very sculptural over the Summer and Autumn. Lastly if you leave the foliage to die back naturally then more of the energy of the plant can return to the bulb increasing its health.
Where to go in November Wakefield is a must if you like Autumn colour. Wonderful Autumnal trees against the blue of the lakes. The garden is lovingly tended Sheffield Park with an eye for detail and simple colour palettes. Just as in life, sometimes when you peel back the layers, you find a few surprises. Maybe it's an old structural issue or a forgotten time capsule from the 80s. But with a seasoned architect or builder to guide you, these surprises can be tackled with grace and humour. Clapham Parish Council Dog bin refused; low response to Parish questionnaire Edited extracts from draft minutes of Parish Council meeting 31st August 2023. Dog bins. The council had received representations from residents, both for and against the possibility of a dog bin at the entry to the woods near the church. It was resolved not to proceed based on cost to the Parish (emptying of its existing four bins will be circa £1200 per annum from 2024); reservations as to whether it would solve the issue; and that it was on private land, in use by the wider communities but the cost of which would fall to Clapham. Donation. Resolved to donate £20 to Arun Counselling Centre, a charity based in Littlehampton, worthy of support although they did not meet the grant award criteria. Questionnaire. There had only been about 20 responses to the Parish questionnaire, which might in part reflect the existing Neighbourhood Plan, and the more recent 2022 Parish Design Statement. A first draft of the document was circulated at the meeting and, whilst the final
document was due to be submitted by October 20th, the South Downs National Park Authority had offered some flexibility on this date, so the Parish Council could approve the final submission at its October 26th meeting. Assets of Community Value applications. The school nomination was successful as the property furthered community social wellbeing and could continue to do so. The church nomination failed based on a legal case finding that religious buildings are excluded from ACV scope. The Junction nomination failed because support provided during closure was from the owner’s home and not the Junction itself. The reopened cafe had limited operations needing volunteer help which did not materialize, indicating an apparent lack of support from the community. Cars racing. The issue with cars racing around the two roundabouts near Clapham had raised its head again and the Clerk had highlighted the matter to the Neighbourhood Policing Team. www.clapham-wsx-pc.gov.uk

Patching Parish Council Dog bins, road safety, Patching Pond problems, pavements Edited extracts from draft minutes of Parish Council meeting 17th August 2023. Events account. There is a surplus of £873 and the public were invited to suggest ideas for how the money could be spent. Suggestions were: • Dog bins. When previously investigated was found to be too expensive, siting of bins were a problem and possibly not in accordance with the Neighbourhood Plan. It is being explored again, but the council does not anticipate a change in its previous resolution. • Fast fibre internet. There were not enough parishioners to take this forward when previously attempted. Volunteers from the Parish requested to help explore this further. • Fences at the village entrance to reduce speeds. Council currently looking at how to reduce speeding through the village. • Mirror opposite France Lane to improve visibility. Department of Transport WSCC do not support the use of mirrors; the land owner is responsible for cutting back the hedging.
Lorries continue to park up along The Old Arundel Road by the pond before going into the developments in Angmering. They are damaging the road surface and reducing visibility. Public need to take pictures and these can be passed to Arun DC for enforcement. Patching Pond ongoing accumulation of heavy plant, dumping of concrete waste/hardcore, the public health issues of a person living onsite not connected to the mains, further destruction of trees. SDNPA who have issued enforcement notices. Landowner has not attended the court cases. It has been decided it isn’t in the public interest to pursue. Suggested a petition and contacting the MP. Pavements from school to village hall car park are overgrown; they become narrowed and a potential problem for people walking along the main road. Suggested public report directly on WSCC website. Pavement outside school is too narrow for safety barriers to be installed. www.patching.claphamandpatching-pc.gov.uk
