Editor’s Comment

As lockdown restrictions slowly begin to ease, we can start to enjoy longer daylight hours and hopefully warmer weather. In this issue, we speak to Jo Shiner about her policing career and rise through the ranks to become the first female Chief Constable of Sussex. Spring is the perfect time to get out and explore the natural world, so Hanna Prince explains the benefits of forest bathing for kids. There is plenty of inspiration for the house and garden as we feature two stunning local homes, plus many more articles to entertain whilst we live through these uncertain times. Stay safe and well.

INTERVIEW

Behind the corporate image of Sussex Police, there’s a very human element to the force. Robert Veitch has delved into a little police history, then brought it up to date in conversation with the recently appointed Chief Constable, Jo Shiner

he list of police programmes on TV is extensive. Over time and through the decades, the likes of Z-Cars, The Sweeney, The Gentle Touch, Juliet Bravo, The Bill, Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost, Life on Mars and Line of Duty have all shown different sides of policing and it’s evolution. Behind the corporate image, there’s also a human element, police officers are just ordinary people doing a difficult job as they have done for over two centuries. At the dawn of the 19th century British law enforcement was organised by local committees, using watchmen and constables. In 1822 Robert Peel was appointed Home Secretary and set about reforming the criminal justice system. He reduced the number of crimes punishable by death by 100, initiated payment for those running prisons, and began educational programs for inmates. In 1829 Peel’s Metropolitan Police Act established the first professional police force. The entrance to the Mets’ first headquarters was in Great Scotland Yard, close to Parliament, so now you know how that name came about. The first 1,000 officers were nicknamed ‘Peelers’ or ‘Bobbies’ after their founder. They worked seven days a week and were expected to wear uniform on and off duty. Bobbies were paid £1 a week. Peel promoted the civilian nature of policing, working with the consent and trust of the public. He was less concerned with the number of arrests and more concerned with a reduction in crime. Peel would later serve two terms as Prime Minister and survive an assassination attempt. Policing in Sussex began in 1830 in Brighton. In 1844 Henry Solomon had the unfortunate honour of being the first and only British Chief Constable to be murdered. He was interviewing a prisoner. The first female officers were employed during WWI. In 1964 The Police Act initiated consolidation among British police authorities, which created the county structure. In 1968 Brighton Borough, 10 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2021

Eastbourne Borough, Hastings Borough, East Sussex Constabulary and West Sussex Constabulary merged into one organisation. Since 1974 they’ve been known as Sussex Police Male police officers used to wear a ‘custodian helmet’ while female officers donned a ‘bowler cap’ and higher ranked officers had a ‘flat peaked cap.’

the rank. She lives in the county with her husband Andrew and told me enthusiastically, “Sussex has so much to offer, I love exploring the county.” Jo hails from Norfolk and has an older brother, “My mother was a teacher, and my father was in the RAF, so I grew up in a household where public service was a way of life.”

I was very sporty which converted my mischievous energy and determination into something positive

In 2021 all ranks can wear a ‘flat peaked cap’. Women can choose to wear a ‘bowler hat’ and up to certain ranks male offices can choose a ‘custodian helmet.’ Today the police are funded via the council tax and central government. The ranks a police officer can ascend are; Constable, Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector, Superintendent, Chief Superintendent, Assistant Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable, and Chief Constable. Sussex Police consist of three divisions, subdivided into the districts of; Chichester, Arun, Adur and Worthing, Brighton and Hove, Horsham, Crawley, Mid Sussex, Wealden, Lewes, Eastbourne, Rother and Hastings, plus Gatwick Airport. Jo Shiner is the 9th Chief Constable of Sussex and the first woman to hold

Jo wasn’t squeaky clean as a child; she pushed the boundaries and kept her parents on their toes. “I was very sporty which converted my mischievous energy and determination into something positive. This, on the whole, distracted me from being too wayward, but there were definitely occasions where some of my choices could have been better! It’s why I am so passionate about policing children

and young people in our communities in such a way that they can grow up, make reasonable mistakes and not be permanently criminalised for them.” Jo went to a comprehensive school and credits a couple of inspirational teachers. “They knew how to channel my energy into positive directions, and focus on my strengths. They didn’t try and change ‘me’. As a young girl growing up, I believe this was, and still is, incredibly important. Nobody shines in every area, and it is vital that we celebrate the things we are good at, rather than those we’re not. When I have the privilege of speaking with teenagers about policing, authenticity is one of the areas that I am always very keen to accentuate.” While still a teenager Jo’s father was killed in a car crash on his way to work and it had a profound impact on the family. “I believe it led me towards joining the Police Service. The ability to be able to understand what families go through when they suddenly and unexpectedly lose a loved one, and try in some way, to make that ordeal as bearable as possible was, and still is, a strong motivation.” Jo knows that being a police officer allows such a privileged insight into people’s lives during difficult times. “A huge sense of responsibility drives you

to help them in the best possible way. It is also why I feel particular empathy with children and young people who do go through a major adverse experience during such formative years. I know, first-hand, the scale of the impact that can be experienced, and the potential consequences.” Jo’s policing career began in 1993 in Norfolk. “I was very proud. I felt that I had found my vocation in life and to this day, I still feel the same sense of excitement and passion. There is little doubt that there have been challenging times, but the opportunity to help people eclipses the difficult moments.” She remembered, “I was very much a minority as a woman in policing back then, and, watching the TV series Ashes to Ashes definitely brought back memories!” There is little doubt that the determination and strength of character that got me into hot water at school has helped me immensely during my policing career.” Jo can vividly recall her first time on solo foot patrol. “I was apprehensive and excited, but very proud. My first arrest was a shoplifter, after a foot chase, and it definitely helped me ‘earn my place’ amongst the shift.” In 1995, Jo and her crew partner were commended for bravery after tackling a man with a gun in a pub and safely apprehending him. “It was a moment I will never forget, and reminds me every day of the dangers that my incredible front line colleagues face. In fact, today, they face far greater dangers than I did back then, and I am always in awe of them when I escape the office and join them on patrol.” Jo worked her way up to Chief Superintendent in Norfolk, before ‘leaving her comfort zone’ in 2014 and transferring to Kent Police to become Assistant Chief Constable. “I lived on the Kent and Sussex border and

spent many happy hours exploring Ashdown Forest, which is still my favourite running venue.” In 2018 the opportunity to join Sussex police as Deputy Chief Constable arose. Jo recalled being, “thrilled to be selected and since then I have been based at Malling House, the former home of the old East Sussex Constabulary, in the stunning town of Lewes.” In July 2020, amidst the pandemic, Jo became the first female Chief Constable of Sussex Police. “It was one of the proudest moments of my life. To think the headstrong, slightly naughty, non-conforming girl from an average comprehensive school had achieved this, was to me, deeply satisfying. I think my late father would be proud.” Jo is a very proud patron for Sussex

Search and Rescue, “who do amazing work in all weathers searching for vulnerable people.” She’s also a Trustee for Embrace Child Victims of Crime, “A national charity offering services to children who have been the victim of crime or have witnessed serious crimes. In 2018 I ran the London marathon to raise money for them, which was an experience I will never forget, or repeat!” Jo has also raised money for the Beachy Head Chaplains, a charity

very close to her heart. “They save so many lives a year, and are an incredible partner to Sussex Police.” She is also the proud owner of an ‘adorable but mischievous’ rescue dog called Rocky and also volunteers for animal rescue charities, a passion close to her heart. But what would Jo say to anyone considering a career in policing? “I can’t recommend it highly enough. You will experience the very best, and the very worst of society. You will discover things about yourself that you never knew, hidden skills you were unaware of, but most importantly a feeling of public service that is deeply satisfying and addictive. There has never before been so much work to improve equality of opportunity for all, and whatever your gender, race or background, there could be a role for you in Sussex Police.” Life during COVID-19 has been a challenge and so has policing as Jo noted, “I have a brilliant and committed team around me who have worked incredibly hard to try and achieve the balance of ‘Explanation, Engagement, Encouragement, and Enforcement.’ There are many polarised opinions in our communities, but our job is to save lives, and whether that is by preventing crime or enforcing the COVID-19 regulations, I remain impartially committed to doing that

to protect people, and support our incredible partners.” Sussex Police has almost 6,000 people in its family, whether officers, staff, PCSO’s, Special Constables or volunteers, and they’re looking to recruit almost 300 more. Jo stated, “Everyone is valued. As a team, we work very hard to fulfil our priorities, namely to protect our communities, catch criminals and deliver an outstanding service.” Our time almost over, Jo summed up. “The complexity of policing the

FOREST BATHING T

for kids

he Japaneseinspired practice of ‘forest bathing’ has been shown to reduce stress, improve concentration span and even boost the immune system. Here’s how to get the whole family involved. Most kids have a natural affinity with trees. They love climbing them, hiding in them, building dens around their trunks and in their branches. Woodland play is a great way to tempt children away from the tablet and get them enjoying the outdoors – but it could also have a positive impact on everything from their concentration spans to their immune systems. The idea that spending time among trees can have real therapeutic benefits underlies the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku or ‘forest bathing’. The term was coined in the 1980s by Japan’s Forest Agency after they noticed that officials working in a wooded environment were proverbially relaxed and healthy. Large-scale scientific studies have since backed up this assumption. One research study

cells, our bodies’ first line of defence against infection, increased more than 50% in participants after a three-day forest trip. Scientists have speculated that this immune system boost is provided by phytoncides – the organic chemicals released by trees. Kids can benefit just as much as adults. According to Forestry England, “being calm and quiet amongst the trees, observing nature around you while breathing deeply, can help both adults and children de-stress and boost health and wellbeing in a natural way.”

found that forests “promote lower concentrations of cortisol, lower pulse rate, lower blood pressure, greater parasympathetic nerve activity and lower sympathetic nerve activity than do city environments.” Another showed that the activity of natural killer (NK)

WHERE TO TRY IT We have several different types of woodland here in the UK. The most established is ancient woodland, which refers to any area that’s been wooded constantly since at least 1600AD. Sussex contains around 43,000 hectares of woodland, almost 11% of the county area. Other types include secondary woodland, which has grown up on land previously denuded of trees, and

commercial woodland where trees are grown to be sold as timber. Most woodland in Britain is managed for conservation, recreation, game, timber production or other purposes. You can try forest bathing anywhere, but some of the biggest and best-known areas of woodland in Sussex are owned by Forestry England. These include St Leonard’s Forest near Horsham, Abbot’s Wood between Polegate and Hailsham, Friston Forest at Exceat and Birchden Wood just west of Tunbridge Wells. There are also dozens of Woodland Trust-owned and other non-commercial woods dotted across our region, from Butcher’s Wood at Hassocks to Beecham Mill Wood at Newick. To find woodland local to you, use the Woodland Trust’s interactive map (www.woodlandtrust.org.uk). CONNECTING WITH NATURE You’ve persuaded the kids into their wellies and made it to your nearest woodland – now how do you turn an enjoyable walk through the trees into a true forest bathing experience? Forestry England recommends turning off all devices and moving slowly through the forest, thinking about what you can see, feel and smell. Encourage your kids to be observant

EDUCATION

The Pharmacist WILL SEE YOU NOW With Covid-19 still making headlines around the world, the creation of medicines, as well as their distribution and benefits remain a fascinating topic as Robert Veitch discovered when he spoke to pharmacist Jonathan Brauner

“I

’m a community pharmacist,” disclosed Jonathan Brauner cheerfully, “it was something I decided I wanted to do while I was quite young, it was a conscious choice. I had an interest in medicine and a desire to understand the effect of drugs and medicines on the human body.” A pharmacist provides expert advice on the supply and safe use of medicines and drugs, as well as dispensing those medicines and drugs.

We’re an informative link between doctors and medicine

22 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2021

Pharmacists also understand what’s called the mechanism of action, which is the biochemical interaction from a drug that produces a pharmacological effect. Pharmacists are knowledgeable with regard to the application of drugs to maximise their benefit, to reduce side effects, and to avoid unwanted interactions with other drugs, alcohol or certain foods. Historically, pharmacists existed to distribute medication on behalf of doctors but as Jonathan revealed, times have changed. “During my career, the last 35 years have seen the role evolve and expand, its become more rounded. We’re an informative link between doctors and medicine, offering more advice than we did in the past. We also offer vaccinations like flu for example, and run screening programmes as well.” Jonathan is not a native of Sussex. “I’m a Londoner, born and bred and educated. My ‘A’ Levels were in the science subjects of biology, physics and chemistry and pharmacy was a good fit for those subjects – I enjoyed chemistry the most.” Teenagers appraising their career options in 2021 might do well to consider pharmacy, which Jonathan recommends. He believes science subjects are most suitable, as is maths to some degree. “Get some work experience in a community pharmacy, in a hospital or industry and discover if this is a role for you.”

Useful personal attributes include a desire to help people, an eye for detail and precision as Jonathan noted, “prescriptions have to be double checked before being handed out – about 90% are sent electronically direct from the surgery these days.” Good communication skills are essential, as is the need to be calm under pressure. Some dispensing chemists are very busy. The Masters of Pharmacy degree lasts four years and precedes a one-year pre-registration course in pharmacy. An alternative route into pharmacy involves a mix of university and work placement. Jonathan recalled his time at university, “the degree is unusual in that there isn’t an academic subject called pharmacy, but students study about ten disciplines including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, physiology, microbiology and pharmaceutics.” This variety of disciplines mean that understanding something like Covid-19 and all its ramifications is quite straightforward to someone like Jonathan. R-numbers and viral load are nothing new to him. After qualifying in 1986 Jonathan worked in the capital until moving to Brighton in 1990. “I practised in about half a dozen pharmacies in and around Brighton, in superstores, chains

Students study about ten disciplines including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, physiology, microbiology and pharmaceutics and the independent sector.” Jonathan moved away in 2009 and these days he practises in Oxford. A pharmacist can work in three sectors, the community (as dispensing chemists), in hospitals, and in industry. Dispensing pharmacists and hospital based pharmacists are required to be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council to be able to practise legally. A newly qualified pharmacist can earn £30,000 - £40,000 in their first job. Industry work has the greatest potential for career progression, within research and medicine production programmes at companies like Roche, Merck and Amgen.

Like many other professions the national governing body requires continuing professional development and the General Pharmaceutical Council require an annual update from pharmacists. Jonathan told me the science surrounding Covid-19 is interesting on a professional level. The design, testing and rollout of the new vaccines is “extraordinarily fast, but these vaccines are based on existing models and existing designs.” The Oxford University – AstraZeneca vaccine is based on previous vaccines created and proven over many years, while the Moderna and Pfizer – BioNtech vaccines are based on more recent technology. But what does Jonathan think about the Covid-19 vaccines, “100% take it when the vaccine is offered” he remarked enthusiastically. And with that our time was up and Jonathan had to go, off to help another person in need of assistance, off to make the world a little healthier. l

Paula Barnes and Matthew Thompson extended a dated country coach house to create a stylish and comfortable family home by combining old and new

t was a craving for the countryside that led Paula Barnes, her husband Matthew and three young children to leave their seafront home in Hove for an old coach house in the pretty picture postcard village of Southease near Lewes. “Our previous house was in the centre of town with all amenities nearby and was very easy to look after, but as soon as we viewed Black Lamb House, Matthew had his heart set on it. We wanted more outside space and with two acres of mature gardens, with views beyond to the South Coast, it seemed perfect. We also wanted a new project to take on, having developed several properties before,” explained Paula. A project was in fact a bit of an understatement as the house was terribly dilapidated. The two-storey building was built in the 17th century with later 18th century additions and had been neglected since the 70s. “It was a wreck,” said Paula. “It had nasty green carpets and concrete floors throughout

We were tempted to knock the whole thing down and start again,” she added. “But as it was Grade II listed we decided to plough on and set about extending the property.” In 2007 Paula, Matthew, their three children Eve, Arthur and Audrey and their dogs moved into their new ‘dream’ home. However, the dream soon turned into a nightmare. “It was so stressful. The toilets didn’t flush properly and it took half an hour for the bath to fill. The final straw was when the boiler broke so we packed ourselves up and rented in Brighton for six months.” As a qualified architect, Paula designed and drafted the plans for the extension. The renovation of the original property and the new build took a year in total to build although the bulk of the work was done in six months. Today it’s almost impossible to imagine that

DESIGN TIP

Choose paintings that you really like. Don’t compromise on something just because it fits into the colour scheme as they are an investment to bring pleasure for many years. Also buy a piece of furniture or light fitting and design rooms around it

Paula has grouped favourite paintings, a decorative lamp and antique glassware atop an antique apothecary chest to make an interesting feature wall

it’s been extended at all, the brick and flint addition blend seamlessly with the original building. Both inside and out the design, features and chosen pieces work beautifully together. Where period elements could not be restored, the couple kept as true to the original as possible and installed several antique fireplaces, reclaimed floors, old beams and plastered the walls in a rough clay lime to give an aged feel. When it came to decorating, Paula, who also has a textiles degree, used the ethos that practicality and personality are key. “I like houses to feel instantly comfortable, aged and luxurious and I enjoy paying attention to detail,” explained Paula “It’s lovely to surround yourselves with things that are important to you - I like to be reminded of people. Over a period of time, books and paintings, things that you would never part

HALL The house is entered via a large hallway, leading to all the principal rooms and an elegant curved staircase

DESIGN ADVICE

Always have a plan for each room set in your mind and know where the main element should go. For example, should the bath be in front of the window or should the sofa be against the wall or central in the room

with, become the story of your life and it makes sense to me that they should be on display.” Most of Paula’s pieces are inherited, auction buys or found at boot fairs and travels to Europe. ‘Belgium and Holland are really good for salvage,’ she said. Squashy sofas, mismatched vintage fabrics and textiles are transformed into stunning pieces throughout Paula’s home. Her signature range of furniture is based on old designs, made by local craftspeople, using traditional techniques and remodelled to work for modern living. “If I can’t find what I want, I have it made,” said Paula. A light, neutral paint palette in whites, creams and greys has been used throughout the house which gives a sense of continuity and is the perfect canvas for the colourful accents of the accessories, paintings and photos which pulls everything together. Paula has created a stunning country family home which looks like it has been in the village for years and years. “It’s all about de-designing and emphasising on living - with things you love looking at in a calm environment. So, investing both time and money to create the perfect sleeping environment is key for optimal wellbeing. MATTRESS MATTERS A good mattress provides both comfort and support, but with an ever-increasing array of fillings, choosing one can feel complicated. Sprung mattresses use some form of wire springs. The most basic is a continuous coil mattress which is made from one continuous length of looped wire coiled into springs. Offering good value for money, these mattresses are light and easy to turn. Open coil mattresses offer single springs fixed together with one wire, but regular use can lead to sagging and ‘roll-together’ in shared beds. For longevity, excellent support and luxury, try a pocket sprung mattress, where the springs are housed in individual pockets. This allows each spring to move independently, providing support where needed and minimising any ‘roll-together’ issues. Non-sprung mattresses are most commonly made from memory foam or latex. right balance of support and comfort for your sleeping style. As with duvets, factors to consider include plumpness, temperatureregulation, wash-ability, dust mite resistance and hypoallergenic properties. The most luxurious filling is goose down, providing neck support, and breathability. Other natural fillings include duck down and wool, while synthetic options include memory foam, hollowfibre and microfibre.

BEDDING Similarly, duvet fillings fall into a personal choice between natural and synthetic fillings and there is the added factor of the tog rating, which indicates the level of warmth. An allseasons duvet combines a low tog duvet for summer with a medium tog for the spring

and autumn, with both joining together for extra warmth in the cold winter months. Look for products with a box construction which keeps the filling in place. In terms of bedding, whether you like soft linen, crisp cotton, cool silk or cosy flannelette, the choice is

extensive. For temperature regulation, natural fibres are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. For silky softness, remember the finer the fabric weave, the softer the feel. So, while a high thread count might be desirable, it is the type of weave that will determine the softness of the fabric. l

SUSSEX STONEWORKS Home improvements can come and go, but investing in a stone worktop is something that will last a lifetime. We sent Robert Veitch to visit the new Sussex Stoneworks showroom and learn a little more about the company

E

ntering the new Sussex Stoneworks showroom is like entering an Aladdin’s cave devoted to granite, quartz and marble. Owners Matthew Dale and Daniel Powell were full of infectious enthusiasm as they chatted about their work. Between them, they racked up 15 years of stonemasonry experience before deciding to set up Sussex Stoneworks. When I met them they were putting the finishing touches to their new showroom.

Sussex Stoneworks specialise in natural stone installations for kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces As well as opening their showroom Matthew and Daniel are imparting their experience on eager new recruit Jack Gillin. Sussex Stoneworks specialise in natural stone installations for kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces, also undertaking bespoke work for clients across all of Sussex. Matthew told me the most popular stone they deal with are granite, quartz and marble. “Natural granite is quarried in chunks, then sliced using the industrial

equivalent of a cheese slicer into slabs approximately 3m x 2m.” After that the slabs are cut, machined and polished into bespoke designs. Daniel pointed out quartz makes up about 80% of the current market and comes with guarantees of up to 20 years because it’s man made. “Quartz is 94% stone dust and 6% resin. It’s very hard wearing and can be manufactured in styles that mimic granite or marble, and in a variety of colours.” Marble is quarried like granite and can be used in kitchens but historically it’s been more popular in bathrooms. Prices of products vary, depending on the design and complexity of the quartz or the rarity of the granite or marble. The new showroom has three permanent displays, plus enough stone samples to keep the average geologist away from the nearby South Downs for a while. Customers with an image of something they want but can’t find in the showroom can rest easy because Matthew and Daniel believe they can outsource almost any stone design in granite, quartz or marble if they can’t bring it to hand immediately.

As well as displaying samples the showroom is a one-stop shop for the customer that wants to get things done through a single point of contact. Pandemic permitting, the showroom will be opening in mid-March. Sussex Stoneworks offer a full design service with 3-D imagery, plus their specialist stone installation service. Matthew enthused “stone worktops have an almost limitless lifespan so long as they are properly installed and well looked after.” Although Matthew and Daniel specialise in modern retail stonemasonry, they still tackle traditional work like repairing and restoring headstones to their former glory. They can also re-purpose existing stone worktops to save customers money on needless new purchases. Stone worktops that exude style, elegance and perfection can be best described in two words – Sussex Stoneworks. l

oving out of London and getting a lot more space for their money plus a sizeable garden was Jules and Oliver Haines’ aim when they started looking for a new house a few years ago. “We’d identified Tunbridge Wells as a possibility so we spent the weekends looking at properties in the area. We didn’t want to be right out in the countryside, but Tunbridge Wells is a sizeable town with good transport links. This was important to us, as Oliver needs to travel in his job as a business development manager.” The four storey Victorian semi on the edge of town ticked all the boxes, and they moved in with their children, Edward and Jemima. “The kids were tiny when we came here, Jemima was a baby, but we felt it was the right time, rather than wait until the children were settled into schools and friendships.” March 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 57

It has to be our large L shaped sitting room sofa! We have had it for about seven years and we love it so much, we actually say it out loud regularly. There is enough room for everyone and it’s well used, and well loved although beige is not a good colour for two small kids

last house was Victorian as well, but quite a bit smaller.” Jules describes her distinctive style as contemporary heritage and she is a huge fan of buying second hand furniture and recycling and reusing. “It actually pains me to buy things new. But, on the other hand, I will occasionally invest in a few pieces that will last, like our big old sofa. We lived in Singapore for a while and we brought back all the furniture that we could reuse, which was mainly from charity shops.” Jules’s ethos of sustainable living extends to her business. With a background in textiles, she has started selling leftover designer fabric, which can be anything from end of print runs to off-cuts or material with slight faults. “I’ve got lots of contacts with manufacturers and designers, and I’ve got pieces of fabric that can be anything from two to seventy metres. The important thing to me is that I’m saving it from going to landfill and it is also giving people the chance to buy and enjoy a high-quality fabric at a much lower cost.” She’s also found the perfect place to store it all, the old kitchen larder, a big space with a door. When it came to replanning the whole property and sourcing some of the

Where I can I try not to buy brand new, I would urge everyone to do the same. We have all started to think about reducing waste and it’s actually pretty easy to buy second hand. I much prefer breathing new life into items I already have or find online, in charity shops or at antiques fairs

fixtures and fittings, Jules asked her friend Danecia to help. “Danecia is local and we met online through Instagram, and realised we shared the same ethos about reusing and recycling items that you already have, rather than buying new if you can.” Both the bathrooms were in a state beyond repair and leaking, so Jules had those replaced in a traditional style but with bursts of vibrant colour. When it came to the kitchen, the couple are thinking of extending at some point in the future, so didn’t want to put in fitted cabinets that would need to be ripped out again. Danecia suggested some simple changes which have brightened up the space, such as updating the existing furniture with a grey woodgrain film, which has made it look more industrial. Whilst Jules found some great shelves made from scaffolding boards at £2 each online. Another big success is the solution to the problem of the open stairs which lead down to the basement kitchen/ diner. “I didn’t want a wall to be built to block off light but needed to make it safe for the children. We were also coming to the end of our budget and I didn’t want to pay for traditional bannisters to be built either.” Jules’s solution was to use red bungee rope in

BATHROOM We decided to paint our bathroom a deep blue to really make a statement and I’ve repeated the colour in the basin and the floor tiles

loops which hold firm and create enough of a barrier while adding a fun touch with a bold colour statement. She has also made most of the curtains and cushions in the house. “I’ve always loved making things. I spent every summer with my grandmother in her big old house in Scotland and she spent a lot of time teaching me to knit and sew, which has always stayed with me.” After painting the whole house in an off-white initially, Jules has added splashes of vibrant red, blue and green throughout the rooms and warmed them up with her own soft furnishings and a smattering of personal pieces from small online businesses, charity shops and recycling websites. They now really enjoy spending time as a family in their home and as Jules explains, “The house really feels like it’s ours now.” l

COMMUNITY

SIBLINGS W

e’ve all seen it written on the signs as we approach certain places; ‘twinned with…’ and then one or more locations are listed, but what does twinning really mean, particularly for people living in those linked communities? After WWII, citizens across Europe were determined never to have their countries torn apart by war again. Bonding communities in different countries was seen as a way to bring those people that had been divided by fighting, together. The twinning concept was straightforward; find towns that had suffered in the war and pair them in an effort to encourage their citizens to meet, to mix and build friendships. Coventry was twinned with Dresden in Germany because both cities had endured terrible civilian losses and infrastructure

As a tentative sense of optimism is beginning to stretch out across the land we asked Ruth Lawrence to explore the past, present, and future, of friendships old and new, and the binding ties generated by Twinning destruction from carpetbombing. Linking people and communities with others who had endured similar experiences was a way to

begin the healing process between nations. The Council of European Municipalities, as it was then known, was set up in 1951 by

a group of European mayors to foster good relations across the continent and prioritise twinning. The 1950s saw a huge increase in the range and number of twinned communities. Former enemies became reconciled and built peaceful relationships with the ambition to build trade and tourism links with their partner. As a leading manufacturer of glass, the English town of St Helens was able to support the rebuilding of Stuttgart in Germany, which had been ravaged by bombing during the conflict. The rebuilding of relations between people and their nations complemented the post war reconstruction of buildings. East Grinstead has twin towns in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Austria. Sue Young, Secretary of East Grinstead Town Twinning Association told me the

March 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 71

last visit took place in 2020 when a small group of young people from Mindelheim in Bavaria stayed for three days. They spent some time at Sackville School to rekindle friendships forged at a youth event in Europe the previous year. Since the pandemic began, Zoom has allowed twin town friends to meet online, but due to current travel restrictions it is expected that this year’s youth event to France will be rescheduled for 2022. Sue’s Association is very active, with a quarterly newsletter, plus a packed schedule of activities and fund raising events (in normal years) to foster links with their counterparts on the continent.

Former enemies became reconciled and built peaceful relationships Twinning is about longterm relationships and putting community first. It introduces people to strangers who then become friends from another culture, which allows the discovery of new experiences and further friendships. It’s not about committees it’s about citizens like you and me: It’s about reaching out of our comfort zone, encouraging us to learn about other everyday folk who experience similar issues to ourselves. Next time you pass a ‘twin town’ sign, be curious and look it up, you may be inspired to play your own part in this international movement for cooperation, friendship and understanding. l www.egtwinning.org.uk

hen compared to the parks and gardens of stately homes, it’s understandable if we regard our own gardens as insignificantly small, but we should take a collective step back and consider the bigger picture. When added together, ‘ordinary’ householders are, in fact, the greatest landowners in the UK. Our domestic gardens account for an area equivalent to Exmoor, Dartmoor, the Norfolk Broads and the Lake District National Park combined. Taking this view, it’s easy to see how even the smallest plot can play a part in helping garden birds to thrive. Late winter through to early spring is the time when nature’s store cupboard is almost bare. Autumn’s harvest of fruits, berries and rosehips have long been consumed. Seed heads, bleached by frost and wind, stand empty. Flying insects are scarce and worms semihibernate; burrowing deeper into the soil to escape winter’s chill, making them out of reach for most birds. Early-flowering shrubs can help fill the hungry gap. Witch hazel, daphne, viburnum and mahonia are real stalwarts of spring; providing nectar-rich flowers for birds and early-venturing insects. Neat-freak gardeners aren’t generally fans of honeysuckle as its natural growth habit is to make a multi-stemmed tangled ‘mess’, but it’s a plant that is invaluable to wildlife. Not only does it produce flowers

and berries, its interweaving stems also offers great shelter and nestbuilding opportunities – birds will strip off honeysuckle’s papery bark for use as nesting material. Best of all is humble ivy. Like honeysuckle, its tangled growth makes a perfect habitat for all manner of wildlife and its fatty, high energy berries are carried throughout winter; blackbirds and thrushes seem to particularly enjoy them. Flower pollen from early bulbs will also provide a nutritious snack for wildlife, but be prepared for pesky pigeons to rip crocus blooms to shreds – bah! Birds need a dependable source of ice-free water; not just to drink, but also for bathing to keep their feathers in tip top condition – a cold plunge on a frosty day holds no fear for them. Fancy bird baths are all very well, but a cheap plastic plant saucer is just the thing in winter; being frost-resistant it will flex and bend, allowing ice to be easily knocked out. Don’t forget to give bird baths, bird tables and feeders a weekly scrub with hot soapy water to remove any harmful bacteria. If you give the birds a helping hand at the leanest time of the year, they will repay your efforts many times over. One blue tit chick will eat approximately 100 caterpillars and insects per day - that’s 100 less beasties to munch away at your summer cabbages and roses. Now, there’s a thought.... l

LOCAL WALK

With the end of winter approaching we tasked Robert Veitch with finding a circular route from our new hometown of Burgess Hill to Hurstpierpoint and back again, a route our Editor Tanis Faulks would enjoy. Did he succeed? Read on…

Burgess Hill & Hurstpierpoint F WALK

rom the roadside car park at Burgess Hill Burial Ground, bear right and follow the Burgess Hill Green Circle path to the north, past the water splash of Pooks Bourne to the junction with Malthouse Lane. Turn left and walk along the road, on the right-hand side, towards any oncoming traffic. Just past the road bridge over the Pooks Bourne pass through the kissing gate on the right, by the tall green gates. Follow the path west, through a little chicane and kissing gate at the end of the first field, then over a 2-sleeper bridge and kissing gate at the end of the second field, preceding the junction with High Hatch Lane. Turn left and wander south along the road. High Hatch Lane soon evolves into Danworth Lane, and after one-third of a mile it curves to the right before crossing the Herrings Stream. The road eases left as it continues south for half a mile to the junction with Chalkers Lane. Continue south on Chalkers Lane towards the church spire for 200m before taking the footpath on the left, accessed via the rusted kissing gate. Follow the path alongside the dwarf conifers and then the stream for almost

Once through these gates and across the 2-sleeper bridge into Tilley’s Wood, take the path on the right and follow it round to the first small bridge that leads into Fairfield Recreation Ground. Veer left, across the Recreation Ground and walk between the distant dugouts and through the gap in the hedge into Hannington Place. At the far end of the road turn right into Iden Hurst and continue to the junction with Cuckfield Road.

200m to the 3-way fingerpost. Turn right, cross the stream and then walk across the middle of the field to the far side. On the far side, bear right and follow the field perimeter to the pair of red gates on either side of the drive.

Turn left and amble uphill as far as the mini roundabout, before turning left into Hurstpierpoint High Street and passing the village green. “I’m fortunate to live in such a beautiful village,” noted Tanis, “such a pretty High Street.” Once through the High Street and almost half a mile on from the roundabout turn left into St. George’s Lane. After 150m follow the road as it

Follow the path past the Bee-Mason installation bends around to the right, then shortly after where the road bends left, take the footpath on the right by the metal barrier. Continue along the footpath to the junction with Layton Fields Close. Cross over and continue along footpath to the junction with College Lane and the hamlet of Hurst Wickham. Cross over and walk along the drive opposite for 80m before taking the footpath immediately to the right of the brick wall, with what looks like a chess pawn on top of the gatepost. After a short distance the path kinks left and widens a little, as it makes it’s way to the

junction with Belmont Lane. Turn left and follow the tarmac, then left again at the 3-way fingerpost a little further on. After 100m, take the footpath on the right, which can be easily missed. After about 100m, the path turns left and widens a little. “I’m glad I wore my wellies,” exclaimed Tanis as she squelched onwards with a grin on her face. Continue north-northeast for ¾ of a mile alongside the perimeter of what used to be Hassocks Golf Course until a gate beside a 3-way fingerpost blocks the path.

Turn left and cross the shallow stile, then after 30m turn right and cross the footbridge over the Herrings Stream. Continue up the slope and past the gate, stile and redundant kissing gate at the top. Once into Hammonds Ridge Meadows continue in the same direction until the junction with Burgess Hill Green Circle is made. Turn left and follow the path past the Bee-Mason installation into Malthouse Lane Meadows and as far as the Emily Temple installation. “These artworks are wonderfully done, so interesting” observed Tanis as we

neared the end of the trek, “It’s a lovely end to wonderfully seasonal walk.” From here it’s just 50m back to the car park, and then it will be time to head home for tea and cake, or a Sunday roast, or gin and tonic, or just a nice log fire and the memories. l Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. WELLBEING

YOU ARE

WHAT YOU EAT Our health and wellbeing are intrinsically linked to what we eat, so this month Lisa de Silva offers guidance on how we can provide our bodies with the perfect balance of nutrition

T

here is nothing like a global pandemic to focus the mind. This year more than ever we have begun to appreciate that good nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight are not just desirable, but essential for our health and wellbeing. The foods we eat contain the nutrients, vitamins and minerals we need to fuel our daily activity, repair our physical state, restore our mental health and support our immune system in warding off infections and diseases. So, it’s essential we get it right.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WHOLE FOODS Unfortunately, it is estimated that 60% of our diet comes from processed foods. These are often full of artificial sweeteners, preservatives, salts and saturated fats, which can be linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and high cholesterol. To protect our health and boost our ability to fight disease, it is essential that we eat more unrefined, unprocessed and whole foods, such as

Beans, pulses, nuts, fish, meat, eggs, shellfish High Fibre Carbohydrate Slows digestion of food – you stay fuller for longer Steady release of energy – avoids spiking blood sugar levels Whole wheat pasta, brown rice, wholemeal bread, sweet potatoes, oats Fruit & Vegetables Packed full of vitamins and minerals for general good health Excellent source of fibre and good for gut health. Eat at least 5 portions a day

fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes. THE BASICS OF GOOD NUTRITION To get all the nutrients we need for optimum health, it’s important to eat a balanced and varied diet. Cooking from scratch is recommended, as you can select the most nourishing ingredients for your meal and control the amount of good fats, sugar and salt added.

Ask yourself if you are genuinely hungry or if are you snacking out of boredom, tiredness or stress? Try to eat three meals a day at regular intervals, using a balance of ingredients from the following food groups: High Quality Protein Essential for growth, repair and good muscle health. Increases satiety levels

Dairy & Dairy Substitutes Good source of calcium and protein. Improves bone health Milk, non-dairy milk (soya, oat, almond), yoghurt, cheese Healthy Fats & Oils Unsaturated fats are good for heart health Olive oil, avocado, oily fish, heart-friendly spreads Fermented Foods & Drinks Vital for gut health to support the immune system Pickles, apple cider vinegar, kombucha, yogurt, kimchi, miso SNACKS & TREATS? Whenever you are tempted to snack, ask yourself if you are genuinely hungry or if are you snacking out of boredom, tiredness or stress? Might there be another way to nourish yourself without the use of food? For those times when you do need a snack or treat, try to be prepared with some healthy options like skinny popcorn, chocolate-coated rice cakes, vegetable sticks and salsa or Greek yoghurt ice cream. l

MOTHERING SUNDAY

Mothering Sunday There’s nothing more special than a homemade gift, particularly when it comes from someone you love. Make this Mother’s Day a creative one with Hanna Prince’s crafting ideas for all the family

I

t’s the thought that counts when it comes to Mothering Sunday – and nothing says love, time and dedication better than a handmade present. You don’t have to be a DIY expert to whip up a gift that any mum would treasure. From fingerprint keepsakes to rustic jewellery, kids of all ages can get involved with these Mother’s Day themed craft projects. PRETTY PRINTS Hand, foot and finger printing is a wonderful way for younger kids to get in on the Mother’s Day craft action. Try your hand (ahem) at a set of printed coasters, create and frame a fingerprint ‘tree’ or decorate a plain apron with handprinted flowers. Even babies can join in – a set of tiny footprints placed side by side is the perfect base for a butterfly wing card.

92 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2021

CLAY CREATIONS From pre-schoolers to teens, kids of all ages love crafting with clay. There’s no limit to the keepsakes you can create, from heart-shaped keyrings and jewellery to mantlepiece ornaments. No clay? No problem. Whip up a batch of salt dough by adding one cup of plain flour to half a cup of salt, mixing in half a cup of water and shaping away. Bake the result on a low heat for three hours before decorating to your heart’s content.

BRING ON THE BLING Rustic jewellery never goes out of style, so why not have a go at creating your own? Younger kids can experiment with crafting clay beads (another great use for that salt dough you made earlier) and threading them onto brightly coloured string. For something slightly more sophisticated, try a braided bracelet: simply plait two pieces of wax cord together tightly, weaving in tiny beads as you go for the perfect festival accessory.

Make a favourite family photo even more special with some creative crafting

PICTURE PERFECT Make a favourite family photo even more special with some creative crafting. Photo frames are easy to make – build your own rustic frame from painted lolly sticks or decorate a cut-out cardboard frame with buttons, pompoms and etchings. If you’re keen to take on a more challenging project then how about a homemade album? Personalise the cover of a plain scrapbook and intersperse photos with drawings, stickers and pressed flowers for a gift that will stand the test of time.

SWEET TREATS Indulge your mum’s sweet tooth with an array of edible Mothering Sunday goodies. Homemade pancakes are the perfect way to start the day – younger members of the family can decorate them with fruit ‘faces’ for a wacky wake-up call. Instead of scribbling ‘I love you’ in a card, why not try a message baked in biscuits instead? Use a biscuit cutter or a sharp knife to carve out the letters, then decorate with pretty icing and arrange on a plate for afternoon tea. Finally, no Mother’s Day celebration would be complete without a cake. Use icing, smarties or sweets to add your own message on top for a personalised touch. l

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Choosing a Signature Scent Sensual and evocative, fragrance plays a powerful role in our lives. Lisa de Silva explains how nothing can stir senses and memories like fragrance, with its ability to take you back to another time, place or loved one

W

hen it comes to choosing a signature scent to identify and immortalise the very essence of you, it is definitely worth taking your time. Yet, as perfume halls can be an overwhelming place to capture that elusive aroma of ‘the one,’ we’ve put together a guide to help you navigate the endless choice available. MAIN CONSIDERATIONS Firstly, patience is a virtue when choosing a signature scent, so accept that it might take a while. Wearing perfume is an intimate way to share something of your character. Like wearing an accessory, it reflects your style and personality and only you can decide what makes you feel sensational. So, think about what message you want to send out about yourself. And how do you want the scent to make you feel? Sophisticated? Energised? Feminine? Confident? Also consider the type of smells that appeal to you, to identify your fragrance family. The four main perfume families are fresh (energising notes of citrus, bergamot, herb); floral (romantic notes of rose, lily of the valley, jasmine); spice (exotic notes of incense, musk, earthy vanilla) and woody (seductive notes of cedar, vetiver, birch). TESTING Armed with this information, it’s time to hit the perfume counters. Try not to overwhelm your senses with too many aromas and spray some options onto paper first to give the alcohol a chance to evaporate. Take them home and choose a couple of contenders. 94 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2021

Do not rub the scent once applied, as this can upset the fragrance molecules. All fragrances have top, heart and base notes, which develop over time. Initially, the scent needs 15 minutes to ‘dry down.’ Then over the course of the day, the ingredients will evaporate at different rates allowing the full aroma to develop. The fragrance will vary from person to person as our pH levels and body chemistry are all different. Simply keep testing until you find ‘the one.’

All fragrances have top, heart and base notes, which develop over time Once you’ve got two favourites, return to the store and spray each one directly onto a wrist. The skin is warmer here which will help to diffuse the scent.

THE CHOSEN ONE Once you’ve found your soul mate you will need to decide on the level of concentration you require. This may depend on the season but as a rule of thumb the higher the quantity of pure essence, the stronger and more expensive the scent, with parfum at the top end and eau de cologne/toilette at the other. To increase the longevity of the fragrance, try layering body wash and lotion from the same range. l

How to achieve ‘2020’ vision in 2021 By Mr Gok Ratnarajan Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Director of Innovation Eye Clinic Head of Glaucoma at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead

I

t is 2021 but that is no reason why your vision should not be 2020. I hope this guide will give some advice and tips to keep your eyes healthy.

Prevention is better than cure... get your eyes tested regularly Routine sight tests at your opticians will not only help improve your vision but could also detect diseases that can lead to sight loss such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Early diagnosis is the key to preventing sight loss from these serious

you out of glasses altogether and your Ophthalmologist will advise you if you are a suitable candidate.

You are what you eat? but unfortunately relatively common eye diseases, this is especially important if eye disease runs in your family.

What is a cataract and how is it treated? A cataract is when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy leading to blurred or faded vision, as well as glare and haloes. Modern cataract surgery is quick and painless with a very fast visual recovery. I often tell my patients that cataract surgery is a chance to reset your vision to fit your lifestyle. Premium lens can get

A balanced and healthy diet is important for so many aspects of your general health and your eyes are no different. A diet rich in greens and vegetables should provide the necessary vitamins and anti-oxidants you require. Oily fish and some nuts and seeds such as walnuts and flaxseed are a good source of omega 3 and this is important for eye health and could also help with dry eye. With a balanced diet, there should not be a need for vitamin and anti-oxidant supplementation but your Ophthalmologist may

suggest these for specific conditions such as dry macular degeneration.

Give your eyes a break Staring at computer screens or smart phones can lead to sore and dry eyes. I would advise you take regular breaks and perform 5 slow and strong blinks. This helps reduce dry eye but you may also benefit from using lubricant drops particularly in the morning and evening when your eyes are at their driest.

UV light It is certainly advisable to invest in a good pair of UV blocking sunglasses as cataract and retinal damage can occur with excess exposure.

Until the end of March, Mr Ratnarajan is offering a £150 discount to any Sussex Living reader who wishes to have a consultation. His office can be contacted on 0800 005 3335 or info@innovationeyeclinic.co.uk

# KIDNEYS MATTER World Kidney Day is on Thursday 11th March 2021, so Robert Veitch delved into a few Kidney facts and information about the day

K

idneys are essential to human health. They get rid of excess water and toxins, regulate blood pressure, create red blood cells, and help keep bones strong. For 2021’s World Kidney Day on Thursday 11th March, the major kidney charities and professional organisations in the UK are working together to raise awareness about the vital role our kidneys play. The new campaign is #KidneysMatter and it will show how important kidneys are, what can happen when they go wrong and how to keep them healthy and reduce the

risk of kidney disease. #KidneysMatter features a big yellow kidney. It will appear in a range of materials which can be shared on social media. Use #KidneysMatter and #worldkidneyday in social media. There are some easy ways to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease: Monitor your blood pressure and try to maintain a diet low in salt and saturated fats. Keep fit and active because it helps reduce blood pressure. Don’t smoke, because it slows blood flow to the kidneys, decreasing their

• • •

ability to function properly. Eat healthily and keep your weight in check. Get your kidney function tested. This is sensible if anyone in your family has suffered from kidney disease, you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or are severely overweight. Keep well hydrated as it helps the kidneys clear toxins from the body and reduce urinary tract infections. (Dialysis patients may need to restrict their fluid intake). Get advice from your doctor if you know you have kidney disease or think you may be showing the symptoms. l www.worldkidneyday.org

OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and Sara Whatley has been learning how we can all get involved in raising awareness and assist with fundraising

T

he earlier a woman is diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer the more likely it is that she will respond to treatment. Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month aims to make sure more women are diagnosed sooner, by raising the profile of the disease and its symptoms, and by raising money to help save lives.

Diagnosis at an early stage can more than double the chance of survival but less than a third of UK women are confident they know the symptoms. Symptoms occur frequently, up to a dozen times a month and include: l increased abdominal size/persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes) l difficulty eating/feeling full l pelvic or abdominal pain l needing to wee more urgently or more often Other symptoms can include unexpected weight loss, back pain, a change in bowel habits, and extreme fatigue. Women experiencing any of these symptoms regularly and at an abnormal level should consult their GP and get checked. It’s worth noting that unlike cervical, bowel and breast cancers, there is still no reliable, effective screening method for ovarian cancer. You can help spread the word by holding a fundraising event, like a bake sale, pub quiz, sponsored walk and so on. l www.targetovariancancer.org.uk

LEADING THE WAY FOR CHANGE

T

hose of us in Sussex, know what a special place it is, but just occasionally, it offers something that breaks new ground on a national basis. Looking to find such innovation, you might be tempted to seek it in one of the big towns or cities, but on this occasion, you’d discover it in a small village in East Sussex. Five Ashes, situated on the A267 between Heathfield and Mayfield, has the UK’s first and only Cottage Hospice. Opened in December 2019 by Hospice in the Weald, the aim is to offer a service that falls between hospice care in a patient’s own home, and the In-Patient ward at the main hospice in Pembury, Kent. As Tor Edwards, from Hospice in the Weald, explained, the Cottage Hospice aims to accommodate a previously unmet need, allowing patients nearing the end of their lives, to be looked after by those that they love. It also enables end of life care in the region to be extended, providing an additional service for people who prefer not to be in hospital at this time. Patients, and their caregivers, are supported by a team of

trained volunteers and medical staff, including nurses and specially trained paramedics, in an environment that aims to create a home from home. The Cottage Hospice is as innovative in its construction as it is in its function. The architecture is modern, with the curves of its living roof, helping it to blend into the countryside that surrounds it. This

natural theme continues on the inside, with the supporting struts in the full-height atrium, curving upwards to suggest trees, and wooden finishes in the rooms providing a more natural, less institutional feel, than plastic or metal. The ten rooms are named after trees, and each has a private veranda, offering an outside space that connects to the wider environment. There are views across the surrounding countryside and the grounds blend seamlessly with the land beyond. Five Ashes sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty and the hospice takes full advantage of this, placed on a ridge that overlooks the surrounding area. There are ensuite bathrooms, comfortable chairs and soft furnishings, with internet access and a fully-equipped communal kitchen offering quality ready meals, together with a laundry, so that carers are also fully provided for. Much thought has been given to the décor and interior, to provide a relaxed and informal feel whilst making it a practical place for meeting the care needs of those nearing the end of their

lives. Patients are even able to bring their pets with them, an important consideration for many families. The hospice was built on land that previously accommodated the Church of the Good Shepherd, and features from the old wooden building, such as the stained-glass windows and the arch celebrating the beginning of the millennium, have been incorporated into the new construction, offering continuity with the past. The atrium area is a multi-functional space where church services would normally be offered for the wider community. There

night or day, practical or emotional, there is always support for the patients, and their families who are caring for them. So far 90 families have taken advantage of this new style of hospice care, and it has a present cohort of 32 volunteers, with additional help always welcome. Across the country, the eyes of the palliative care community are on this new facility. The Cottage Hospice is leading the way for change in providing the best possible ways of dealing with the inevitable reality of dying, and Sussex has offered a warm hello to a different option on the conventional settings for goodbyes. This has got to be positive. l For more information please visit www.hospiceintheweald.org.uk

Rustington Hall

Nursing and Care Home

Rustington Hall are pleased to announce they are accepting new admissions At Rustington Hall, we aim to provide residents with a secure, relaxed yet stimulating, and homely environment in which their care, comfort and wellbeing is of prime importance. Rustington Hall is a dual-registered Nursing and Care Home for 61 residents, meaning that as the resident’s needs change, their surroundings do not have to. We have a carefully selected team here at Rustington Hall, who are all devoted to making sure that our residents are at the forefront of everything we do. We are very proud of who we are and what we represent, in working together to provide a community for residents and their families alike.

Dining We understand the whole dining experience is a large part of our resident’s day. Our Head Chef and team provide high quality, nutritious and appetising food, all of which is freshly prepared and cooked from locally sourced ingredients. Shared Areas Our large, modern lounge leads onto a wheelchair-friendly decking area. We also have a dedicated activities suite, quiet lounge, and meditation/prayer room. When the weather allows, our residents enjoy sitting in the extensive grounds and award-winning gardens.

Activities and Events Our Activities and Wellbeing Team enjoy getting to know the residents. They host an extensive programme of activities including quizzes, film afternoons, games and a range of animal visitors! We have monthly themed events, which the residents love participating in, such as Ascot Day, Mad Hatters Tea Party, Masquerade Ball, Beach Day, to name a few. For those who wish to stay in their rooms, we also have a trolley that travels around the Home, offering puzzles, books, colouring and games.

CHARITY

In spite of some positive innovations in tech-based support for carers, the vast majority have found life significantly more challenging. Digital literacy is a real issue for many carers, meaning they may struggle to access new technologies. A decrease in available support, and sometimes the complete closure of local services, has led to most carers having to provide even more care. Exhausted

Carers in Crisis Caring for loved ones can be demanding at the best of times but the additional stress of a pandemic means many carers are suffering with their emotional and physical health as Jane Caley from the Association of Carers explains

C

arers UK conducted an online survey in September 2020, and this survey provided compelling evidence that COVID-19 continues to have a huge impact on unpaid carers. This is not only because of the increased amount of care that many are having to provide, but because of the effect that providing this extra care potentially has on their relationships, their mental and physical health, their paid work and their emotional wellbeing.

Two in three UK adults can expect to become a carer during their lifetime, with carers saving the economy many billions of pounds each year. There were up to 9.1 million unpaid carers across the UK before the pandemic, providing everything from a few hours support per week, to intensive and complex round the clock care. The pandemic has resulted in millions of new carers – 4.5 million people are new to caring since the start of the pandemic, 2.8 million of whom are having to juggle work and care.

Many have had no break from caring for many months, with 50% of carers saying they are reaching breaking point

and worn out, carers are struggling to continue caring and are reporting high levels of fatigue and stress. Almost 75% report feeling exhausted as a result of caring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have had no break from caring for many months, with 50% of carers saying they are reaching breaking point. The 2011 Census, and a more recent GP patient survey by NHS England, showed that carers were more likely than non-carers to have poor health before the COVID-19 pandemic. Given the huge increase in care many are having to provide during the pandemic, and the fact that this is often without any breaks, it is unsurprising that carers are feeling the pressure and seeing an additional impact on their own health and wellbeing. Association of Carers is a Hastings based charity that supports carers throughout East Sussex. They have continued to support carers in East Sussex as much as possible throughout the pandemic, with staff and volunteers providing regular phone calls to carers, as well as Zoom activities to bring carers together. They admit it has been a very difficult time for everyone, but say it has been a real privilege to witness the resilience of the carers that they work alongside. l

If you are interested in finding out more about the charity, or how you can support them, then visit their website www.associationofcarers.org.uk They are currently seeking to recruit new trustees. Information about support for carers in West Sussex can be found at www.carerssupport.org.uk

HISTORY

Parallel Lines, Ironworks & Lewes

A CENTURY OF CHANGE What will the future make of Lewes’s most recent century? John Warburton explores the town in the past 100 years, from its iron industry and railway to its famed bonfire celebrations

O

ur hundred years begin with wounds, after more than 350 soldiers from the town were sacrificed in the Great War. But being enigmatic, independent and resourceful, Lewes more than bounced back. The Phoenix Ironworks thrived and the foundry on North Street by the banks of the River Ouse was the largest employer in the town during the first half of the twentieth century - as countless manhole covers in Sussex streets still testify

today. Lampposts, railings, fire grates, and parts for mines in WWII were also manufactured here. Across the river, the railway had extended north to Uckfield, making Lewes a well-connected town, with direct lines to London, Eastbourne, Seaford and Brighton. The population of the town grew in the 1930s, partly accommodated by

the Nevill and Landport housing estates, before darkness returned in 1939. Loved ones were again lost to war, while enemy bombs targeted the ironworks and railway stations, with homes often destroyed too, followed by airborne machine-guns strafing the streets, notably in 1943. Though the ironworks made parts for prefabricated homes after WWII, post-war technology did not favour heavy industry and by 1978, the Phoenix Ironworks was in decline, finally closing in 1986. Artists and makers rented the buildings until 2016, when the local authorities agreed on redevelopment – which has yet to begin.

The original railway station and link to Uckfield were torn away in 1969, with the town centre tracks replaced by much-derided concrete and brick shops. But afterwards, nature reclaimed the dead land that once held tracks and pollution, now made into a protected reserve managed by the Railway Land Wildlife Trust. To the north of the town, Malling Recreation Ground and a woodland corridor exist where steam once thrived. In the 1960s, campaigners fought off proposals to bulldoze the new A27 through the town’s historic streets and green spaces. Today, the southern bypass, and the blasted-out Cuilfail

Tunnel divert through traffic away from the historic streets of the town. The road building project successfully preserved the houses in South Street and the old Cliffe Bridge is now a haven for walkers, buskers and protests. The new road and bridge across the River Ouse named Phoenix Causeway harks back to the past and the foundry. In the ‘bonfire capital of the world’ both past and present are joined at the hip.

Cliffe and Lewes Borough bonfire societies were born in 1853 and both still thrive. The striped Guernsey jumpers worn today have their roots in sailors, smuggling and the old days as a busy port. The once defunct Southover Bonfire Society was restored in 2005. Above it all, keeping an eye on everything is the castle, a guardian of the past, watching over the future. What will the historians of Lewes make of the next century? l

But what happens if you place your order and then change your mind, either before or after the item is delivered? As a consumer, your right to cancel starts as soon as you pay for the order and ends 14 days after receiving the items or last of a batch of items. If you’re purchasing services online then your right to cancel starts as soon as you sign a contract and ends 14 days later. If a seller does not provide all the necessary

information to you, he/she can be sanctioned according to the Consumer Contracts Regulations and the length of time you have a right to cancel may be extended from 14 days to one year. So, if all the information is not supplied by the seller an automatic extension will apply under the regulations which the consumer can quote. For example, ‘I know my rights under the CCR 2013 and since you haven’t supplied me with all the

In respect of refunds, the seller must refund the cost of the item and standard delivery within 14 days after receiving the returned item or within 14 days of receiving proof that you have returned the item (for example, proof of posting). On the other hand, if the seller has agreed to collect the returned item, then a refund should be forthcoming within 14 days of cancelling the contract, whether or not the item has already been collected. There are, as always, exemptions where the Consumer Contract Regulations do not apply – for example, DVDs, CDs or items where there are seals that are broken - including seals that are there for health or hygiene purposes, such as underwear. Also, bookings relating to hotels, flights or car hire are exempt. That does not mean to say

that there is no redress on these types of purchases, but they’re exempt for the purposes of the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013. If you are purchasing services, such as membership of a dance studio, and you

decide to cancel after you have attended a few times within the 14 day period, then any refund may be reduced to allow for the benefit you have received. It is always best to check the sellers’ Terms

and Conditions before purchasing anything because while the minimum period of cancellation under the Regulations is 14 days, some sellers may have extended this which gives you, the consumer, a longer period of time to make up your mind. CALLS TO HELPLINES If you find yourself needing to call the company’s helpline or customer service team, the good news is, it is strictly prohibited under the Consumer Contract Regulations to charge in excess of a normal call rate to any helpline. In other words, no premium rate numbers are allowed! With all that has been going on over recent months, and the huge increase in online buying, it’s important to understand your rights, and know how you are protected, when buying remotely. So, be sure to read the terms and conditions, and don’t be afraid to go back to the seller if you need to. l

NATURE Demoiselle damselfly

A Silver Jubilee for

It’s 25 years since the Friends of Weir Wood Society was set up to help maintain the Local Nature Reserve on the reservoir and Peter Erridge has been looking into the voluntary work they do for nature conservation A rich community of wintering geese and ducks, spring and autumn migrating waders and summer breeding birds favoured the reserve. This led in 1966 to the Nature Conservancy Council Yellow Rattle

to declare the area a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Until 1970 it was the only large area of open water in East Sussex. In 1988 the western end of Weir Wood was designated a Local Nature Reserve. Regular bird watchers began to assist ESCC Rangers with maintenance work. In 1996 this led to the formation of the Friends of Weir Wood Society to assist in the development and work of the reserve in a more formal way. In recent years the Friends have taken a more important management role with support from ESCC. Wildlife is preserved Brent through overall Geese site improvement including scrub control to preserve the grassland and, where appropriate, the creation of new habitats. There is a ban on the use of pesticides and herbicides. The Friends run work parties on most Tuesdays and for survey work they have been assisted by several of the County Species Recorders. There are over 150 nest boxes and some bat boxes on the Reserve, many made by volunteers. Four tern rafts have been constructed and are now used by a colony of breeding PIC: BOB JOHNSON

n 2021 the Friends of Weir Wood Society reach the landmark of 25 years existence and over 200 members. The group help to look after the nature reserve found at the western end of Weir Wood reservoir. Weir Wood Reservoir is south of East Grinstead and west of Forest Row. In 1945 the government planned to move people from London to a ‘new town’ Crawley. The water for this development was to come from a new reservoir created on the River Medway, two miles east of Grinstead Lane bridge towards Forest Row. The dam was built and completed in 1954. A wet autumn resulted in it filling quickly, one billion gallons, in 8 months. The reservoir is owned by Southern Water who now contract maintenance of the nature reserve to East Sussex County Council (ESCC). Overall supervision is in the hands of Natural England.

Corrugated panels are dispersed around the meadows as refuges for amphibians, snakes, mice and voles. Yellow rattle has been sown; this plant weakens the field grasses to encourage flowering plants and insects that Scarlet Berry prefer shorter grass. grassland. Wild flower seeds have been sown but deer graze the small plants sometimes. PIC: PETER ERRIDGE Hedges planted round the boundary by the Friends are trimmed each year. Hedge laying skills have also been developed. Records are kept of butterflies, moths, damsels, dragonflies, amphibians, small mammals, and of birds including results of nesting and

of bird-ringing. Unusual birds visit the reserve and news soon spreads around the birding community, resulting in birders flocking for a sighting. The society’s fungi surveys have found species new to Sussex including the Scarlet Berry Truffle. There is a car park on Legsheath Lane with a raised viewing area and a bird hide. The bird hide has a low window for wheelchair users and good views over the water, especially to the largest heronry in Sussex on the north bank. From October to March bird feeders are hung within the fenced area and filled several times a week. Access to the reserve is limited to a public Open Day in July and members visiting days. Annual Membership of the Friends of Weir Wood Society is £3. A new book The nature of Weir Wood Reservoir has been written to celebrate this 25th anniversary. l Visit the website www.weirwood.me.uk for information about The Friends of Weir Wood Society and about joining

PETS

Teddy has a love of clowning around and making people laugh, as explained through his human translator, Helen Stockton

T

his time of year has a number of special occasions: Valentines Day, Pancake Day (a personal favourite) and Mothering Sunday, to name but a few. However, one lesser-known event in February is Clown Day. This, apparently, is held in memory of a clown called Joseph Grimaldi, famous for introducing the concept of the pantomime dame and audience participation. I remember ‘Her Indoors’ trying to explain about Pantomimes to an American. That was an interesting one. Two cultures separated by a common language. Oh no they aren’t…! Anyway, one of the good things about us dogs is, like any clown worth their wig, we are skilled at making people laugh. Sometimes that is at our expense. ‘Them Indoors’ have a gargoyle hidden in the shrubbery near the front door – what can I tell you,

118 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2021

they have strange taste – and when I first came to live with them and discovered this, I backed off pretty rapidly and did barking. They seemed to find this amusing for some reason. They are similarly entertained about my behaviour when a certain former US President with a dodgy comb-over appears on the TV. I do growling then with raised hackles. I don’t want him in my living room. Barking at retractable tape measures – nasty, sneaky things that can’t be trusted - and going into hiding when ‘Her Indoors’ wants to take me for a walk, particularly if it’s inclement outside, also seems to give them some quiet amusement. She has to play hide and seek until she finds me, curled up somewhere, avoiding eye contact.

She always says you require a sense of humour to own a Border Terrier

Then I make them smile when I’m having fun. One of the things I like is to grab hold of the end of a toy and spin around with it, faster and faster. I only do this when I’m very happy and it’s such a joyful thing that it makes ‘Them Indoors’ laugh too. We all have fun; what could be nicer. I know not everyone smiles at dogs but then not everyone smiles at clowns. In fact, clowns have a whole phobia of their own, coulrophobia. I don’t think I’ve ever met a clown, but I’m not sure I’d like one if I did. If I want dodgy make-up and bad hair, I’ve got ‘Her Indoors’! She always says you require a sense of humour to home a Border Terrier, although, in a spirit of inclusiveness, I’m sure this applies to other breeds of dog too. Anyway, all of ‘Her Indoors’ friends have a good sense of humour so I am obviously satisfying a particular need. So if you want to be happy, which is always a worthy aspiration, the answer is simple, get to know a dog, we’re good fun! l

I don’t know what I had expected, but the care Molly and our family received was perfect for a very sad time in our lives. We always knew when we had to say goodbye, we didn’t want it to be at the vets as Molly hated being there. It was so sad, but also so lovely for Molly to go at home with us there, it was every thing she deserved . When we received Molly’s ashes they were presented so beautifully, we just knew that she had been looked after so well. Thank you to everyone involved for looking after our lovely Molly Moo and us. Although my serious partying days are well and truly over, (don’t ask; what happened in Penzance stays in Penzance), I still love pubs. A good pub, a proper sandwich and a pint or two of local ale is my idea of gastronomic heaven, but the relentless march of the food stylist is threatening such traditional pleasures. The term ‘Modern British Cuisine’ strikes fear into the hearts of diners seeking modest fayre. Ask my husband to define ‘Modern British’ and he’ll gloomily reply, “No gravy”. Not content with ruining dinner, the food fashionistas have also been fiddling with that great British invention; the sandwich. John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, who is credited with inventing the sarnie in the 1760s (surely his anonymous cook actually had more to do with it) wouldn’t recognise the bonkers concoctions on offer these days. Lasagne-wich, anyone? I kid you not. And another thing… let’s hear it for ceramic plates. Useful things, plates. We’ve been happily using ‘em for centuries, so why bother with anything else? Frankly, I don’t care if it’s been organically hand quarried and ethically sourced from a co-operative workplace in the Forest of Dean - don’t serve my sandwich on a shard of wobbly slate with razor-sharp edges. Nor do I want my lunch artfully arranged on a ‘platter’ upcycled from an old floorboard offcut with vintage woodworm. Think the balsamic dressing was responsible for your artisan salad’s curious aftertaste? Nope, that’ll be lingering traces of Victorian varnish. Just give me a cheese and pickle sandwich. On a plate! 120 SUSSEX LIVING | March 2021
