egends from the worlds of music, theatre, art and comedy will enter into our midst from 15th – 30th September for the 2018 Hurst Festival! The brochure is out this month with full details and booking starts now!

LOCAL TALENT Much of the talent is local: Levellers front man Mark Chadwick, our scratch band being led by brilliant local composer, Fraser Trainer, up and coming singer songwriter Maisy Banks and all the fantastic artists sharing their work during Hurst Open Studios.

You mustn’t miss the Local Wineries Exhibition at the Village Centre where you can learn why Sussex makes such delicious sparkling wines!

PEACE It is 100 years since Lloyd George signed the armistice to end World War I in Hurstpierpoint and so the underlying theme is ‘Peace’. We are hugely excited to announce the World Premiere of WWI drama Winning the Peace, written by Hurst resident, Kevin Carey. There are many events happening to celebrate this historic event from the Garden Party on 2nd September, WWI poetry discussions, an evening focussing on specific Hurstpierpoint service men whose names appear on the War Memorial, music recitals and sing-a-longs.

SUPER SUNDAY Super Sunday kicks off the Festival on the 16th and everyone is invited! As in previous years we are taking over the High Street. Our vintage car parade will be led through the village by the

Burgess Hill Marching Band. There will be an array of street entertainers, performances, dancing, music, graffiti workshops and the return of the everpopular reptiles! There will be loads of food and drink outlets, a funfair and to finish off, an open-mic evening.

A night out with Carrie Fisher

I was a good driver which is how I got into stunts – working on films like Casino Royale (1967) and Brannigan (1975).

On Brannigan, I not only got to work with, but double the legendary John Wayne. I was impressed that the Duke used to carry a stack of cards wherever he went, with his name printed on one side and his autograph on the other.

Fans were thrilled to receive one.

“Never forget kid, these people pay your bills,” he told me one day on set.

From humble beginnings, Frank Henson never imagined that he would one day be risking his life on the big screen, as told to Simon Toseland and Stephen Phillips

I

was born in 1935, on the Whitehawk estate in Brighton.

It was a very poor area, with residents resettled there as part of the slum-clearing programmes of the time. They were tough years; my father left my mother with nothing but his surname. It was a stroke of luck when my mother got a job as a cleaner at a local inn. It was run by a lovely gentleman called Fred Savage.

I was a little tearaway, but he’d get me doing odd jobs like collecting beer bottles and giving me the tuppence deposit on them. He really was a kind and thoughtful man; such unexpected kindness stays with you.

I did every job under the sun when I left Brighton – paratrooper, railway clerk, club doorman in Soho, hairdresser – if I could make a living from it I did it. Jim Houlihan, a friend of mine on the doors in Soho, got me in as a film extra in the early 1960s.

It changed my life and I’ve never really looked back. The other big moment in my life was when Marion, my wife, agreed to marry me in 1962, which made me the happiest man alive.

We’re still together and we’ve shared a marvellous life.

On the Brannigan set with John Wayne

Things went from strength to strength which is how I found myself working on Return of The Jedi (1983), in the Yuma Desert, Arizona, and going out for pizzas with Harrison Ford and the dearly-missed Carrie Fisher. At the end of the filming in the desert, me and a stunt friend had to toss a coin to see who would stay on in San Francisco for an extra fortnight’s work with George Lucas and Carrie Fisher. Luckily, I won and this is how I came to play the small but much-loved role of Biker Scout.

I still get fan mail every week from all around the world for that one part.

I worked on many top films after that including Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Full Metal Jacket (1987), several James Bond movies and lots of British TV. I’ve never been out of work.

My son Franklin used to come and watch me crashing cars and getting set on fire, and something must have rubbed off because he’s a now a highlysuccessful stunt coordinator, working on major Hollywood films. I’m 83 now, so I don’t do so much jumping off buildings, but Franklin still manages to get me the odd day’s work here and there. I still love being on set – the camaraderie and thrill of the action.

I’ve got so many stories and keep an eye out because they’re all going in my book which will be out later this year. l

The sound of goats’ bells, bird song and crickets enhance the soporific atmosphere surrounding the home and yoga retreat, built by Ingrid Gottschalk on Ithaca. Surrounded by olive groves, overlooking the azure blue sea and the mountains of Kefalonia, her contemporary style Greek home is set high above hidden beaches nestling far below.

“It has been an eventful one and a half year project,” she says with a smile, explaining how even just finding the right location was a mission. Having been born and bred in Basel, Ingrid poured over the map of Europe and researched options in Asia and Italy, but finally decided to make her home in Greece. “Ithaca has a lot in its favour. It is still comparatively unspoilt and only accessible by ferry or boat taxi.”

Finding a site with building permission is not for the faint hearted, but Ingrid is clearly a woman with determination.

Her exacting brief to the local agent was to find her “a site by the sea, not in a village but in an isolated spot with a breathtaking view. I had no desire to renovate an old building,” she explains, “so when the agent rang to say he had found me the right site with planning permission miles from anywhere, it was my best day ever.”

Slightly concerned about a huge rock sitting in the middle of the site, she sought out the advice of a local engineer. “Happily he assured me we could break up the rock and use the stones to build the house, which to me sounded like a great ecological solution.”

Pooling ideas, Ingrid and her engineer designed the house as two separate entities, both angled to enjoy the dazzling sea view. One part houses Ingrid’s bedroom and the indoor kitchen cum dining room and the other is a guest wing with a yoga room on the ground floor and a colourful sitting room on the floor above, which opens onto a spacious terrace. The two are linked by paved terraces at different levels shaded by a bamboo awning, which also provides shade for the alfresco kitchen and sitting room.

“In summer the Greeks live outside,” Ingrid says, “and this is where I do most of my entertaining.”

Ingrid fell in love with Greece, and yoga, after attending a spa weekend there –a birthday present from a friend. “After unpacking, I sauntered into the gym and joined a stretch class, which was surprisingly peaceful and invigorating. Only after leaving the class did I realise I had just attended a Hatha Yoga class.” Ingrid smiles a peaceful smile, which has become the hallmark of the atmosphere surrounding her new home.

“Building a house in Greece, I decided to adhere to the local style which is fairly rustic and always includes lots of courtyards, balconies and terraces. Beamed wooden ceilings in dark cedar are a typical feature of the old Greek vernacular, which I used outside, but for a lighter more contemporary look inside, I chose to lime wash all the interior wood with a light chalky grey.”

Often visited by her family, including her three daughters, Rebecca, Helen and Maximiliane, Ingrid loves hosting guests in her home at all times of the year. Far from looking weary, she clearly enjoys her abundant change of lifestyle. It is a far cry from her stressful days in the city.

“We often party and play card games in the evening,” Ingrid’s sun bronzed face shines with health and wholesomeness. “The food here is organic, which is one reason we all feel so energetic,” she suggests. “Many of my guests say it is not possible to stay here and not leave feeling refreshed. Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest

THIS IS GOING TO HURT

This weaves together the scant historical information we have about the young Genghis Khan, and a thirteenth century text. The culture and beliefs of the people of Mongolia of this time is very different to the way we view the world, and it is generally accepted that shape-shifting is fact, shamans have real powers, and killing people is normal. Nevertheless, this is the story of two boys’ obsession with the same girl, and the havoc it creates.

A wonderful book about the life and times of a junior obstetric doctor, full of dark humour that will make you laugh out loud. The sheer exhaustion of the job comes across very clearly. It’s a career full of catastrophes and miracles, with a lot of sheer grind in between.

Nevertheless, it is one of the funniest books I have ever read. For instance; “Down in A&E around 11pm to review a patient, and thumbing through Twitter while I work up the strength to see her. There’s a big news story

This is the story of two boys’ obsession with the same girl, and the havoc it creates beautiful Bortë, but he was poisoned by the Tartars. His friendship with his blood-brother Jamukha turns sour, and the two become enemies raising huge armies. The book is written from three different viewpoints – Khan’s, his wife Bortë’s, and Jamukha’s. Although this might sound repetitive it isn’t, because all three have distinct characters and see things very differently. The music of the Mongolian people is still important to this day, haunting and atmospheric, and the fiddle that Bortë makes from the skull of her beloved pet deer has strange powers. An intriguing and unusual read for young adults.

Leon is a bright boy, and his observations of the people around him are perceptive and moving Jake is white and a baby, and Leon is black and nine years old. This is the 1980s, and no one wants Leon. And then Maureen is taken ill, and Leon has to go and stay with Sylvia. Eventually he finds friends among the elderly allotment holders, who introduce him to gardening. Leon is a bright boy, and his observations of the people around him are perceptive and moving.

All the characters are rounded and complex, this imbues the book with an authenticity that makes it compulsive reading. Funny, heart-rending and sad, it was short-listed for several awards.

It is one of the funniest books I have ever read breaking. ‘Oh Christ,’ I gasp. ‘Michael Jackson’s dead!’ One of the nurses sighs and stands up. ‘Which cubicle?”

It’s not a book for the faint-hearted, as there are plenty of graphic descriptions of medical procedures. And just as you’re coming to the end of it, and wishing you weren’t because your ribs are aching from laughing, the title of the book becomes a reality. You find out why Adam Kay decided to leave the medical profession altogether, and it isn’t a feel-good story. This is a book with a kick in the tail, which makes it a worthy winner of the many awards it has received. The best book I’ve read in a long time.

PLANTING PHILANTHROPY In 2016 award-winning garden designer, TV presenter and planting expert, Juliet Sargeant, won her biggest accolade yet: gold at the Chelsea Flower Show. Kathy Brown caught up with her to find out about life after Chelsea and the inspiration behind her amazing work

G

rowing up in leafy Surrey and being allowed to roam and play freely in the countryside with her friends, as well as being given a corner of the family garden to look after, Juliet’s love of the outdoors was sown from a young age, “I made a very early connection with the landscape and have always associated it with fun, freedom and relaxation.”

With a strong interest in the wider social benefits of gardening and landscape, in 2016 Juliet exhibited a social campaign garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, in the hope of inspiring conversation and action around modern day slavery. Its bright front doors and illustrative planting was representative of the streets where we all live, but there was a darker metaphorical centre to the garden which hinted at a hidden reality – people still being kept in captivity.

You’d think that such an impactful project, which brought national attention to a prevalent social issue, would have been stressful, but Juliet took it all in her stride. “I can honestly say that it was an amazing experience throughout and that is thanks to the

in full blossom, Juliet is involved in multiple projects and looking forward to the coming months. “I’m working with the ‘Chelsea 2020 Forest Garden’ team, who want to introduce people to the idea of growing their food in a natural and sustainable way. I’m also opening a new office in Hurstpierpoint, and my eyes have been opened to the lovely landscape of Sussex. I don’t think I’ll ever stop designing gardens: it’s what I love most about my job. Every client has different requirements and I love seeing them becoming less nervous about plants and starting to connect with their gardens and with nature.”

Juliet also continues to teach about plants at her garden school; and will be joining the panel on the popular BBC Radio Sussex gardening show, Digit.

“It will be a brilliant opportunity to demystify gardening and encourage more people to get involved.”

Water wise

Nothing is more essential to life than water! By collecting rainwater and re-cycling household water, Flo Whitaker tells us how gardeners can help to conserve this precious resource

I

f all the water on earth could be poured into a 4 litre container, the amount available for immediate human consumption would only fill a tablespoon. Most of the world’s water is salty or frozen. The global population has now reached 7.6 billion, but there is no more water now than there was when our planet was formed. Water has never been in such demand – we gardeners can help with its conservation.

Plants wilt for many reasons, so don’t automatically reach for the hosepipe if a plant has flopped. Used incorrectly, pest and disease sprays makes foliage shrivel and wilt. An infestation of aphids, slugs or vine weevil grubs will also cause a plant to collapse spectacularly.

Perversely, overwatered plants exhibit symptoms similar to under-watered ones. If a potted plant looks unhappy, turn it out of the container and check the soil before you water. Drainage holes in patio pots sometimes get blocked,

the compost surface may appear dry, but if you dig down 10 cms it may be foul-smelling and wringing wet. Border plants can also become waterlogged. A leaking downpipe that went undetected during winter, slowly turned one of my flowerbeds into a bog.

Rainwater butts are the obvious way to conserve water.

In a cottage garden setting, a collection of vintage watering cans arranged around a traditional barrel-shaped water butt is both practical and ornamental. Modern-style rainwater tanks look boringly functional but they’re cleverly designed to be used in awkward spaces where barrels won’t fit. However, only use clean water on seedlings, young plants or leafy vegetables, (e.g. lettuce, cabbage, spinach) and never use dishwasher water to irrigate plants – it’s far too salty. Houseplants love the pure, room temperature water from dehumidifiers and (cooled!) excess boiled water from a kettle.

Summer-planted containers usually require daily watering. For border plants, watering little and often is not advisable as this will only dampen the soil surface. Roots, sensing the moisture, will migrate upwards into the hotter top layer of soil, making them vulnerable to drought. Better to generously water fortnightly – the water will soak down to the roots where it will do real good. l

lmost every Sussex town or village seems to have a horticultural society – an echo of its market gardening history, perhaps? Away from polluted industrial cities, Sussex was renowned for quality produce. The railway boom also benefitted market gardens and plant nurseries – their highly perishable goods could be quickly sent around the country.

The Victorian age saw the evolution of the ‘middle classes’. Leisurestyle gardening was an exciting new activity. The far-reaching British Empire meant that thousands of new, rare plants found their way to the British Isles. As more plants became available, prices dropped, putting them within reach of ordinary folk.

Horticultural clubs, once the exclusive domain of the wealthy, became the unlikely stage for amateur gardeners to demonstrate their skills.

Seed that once sold for ‘a guinea a pinch’ could be had for sixpence and a new plant variety was just as likely to be found on a municipal allotment as it was in the gardens of a stately home.

Competition at shows could be fierce, with reputations and significant prize money at stake. Imagine how it must have been for a Victorian

Produce Association was noted in an early edition of Charles Clarke’s Directory, (circa 1879). By 1886 they were holding shows in the Chinese Gardens in Western Road. In 1889, a horticultural show took place in Haywards Heath on “Mr Pannett’s Meadow”, (now Victoria Park) to great acclaim.

In 1904, the impressivelytitled Crawley and District Gardeners Mutual Improvement Association was formed. The Beeding and Bramber Horticultural Society appeared in 1905; Steyning in 1928. Clubs with falling membership were, ironically, rejuvenated by the WWII Dig For Victory campaign, when the notion of ‘Grow Your Own’ became an imperative and not merely a lifestyle choice. Lindfield is a relative newcomer to our list. Formed in 1945, it remains a thriving society with approximately 350 members.

Horticultural shows can trace their origins back to medieval festivals and livestock fairs; they are part of our collective social weave.

If you’ve never visited your local show before, do go along. You don’t require any gardening knowledge at all – just enjoy the sensation of being surrounded by a riot of scents, colours, and living history. l

Blue Cross Tea Party

On Sunday 19th August, Dale Bryant will be hosting her annual Tea Party to raise money for the Blue Cross animal charity.

They were founded in 1897, to help horses on the streets of London, and has now grown and cares for all types of animals who are in need of veterinary attention and a new home! This year will be the 10th anniversary for the Tea Party and she looks forward to welcoming both old and new friends to support the fundraising.

Dale’s mother introduced her to the Blue Cross when she was very young.

She supported the Blue Cross her whole life including during World War II, so it is incredibly important for Dale to continue raising money for a fantastic charity in her loving memory. The Tea Party will be held at 67 Lodge Lane, Keymer from 2-4pm and we will be serving tea, coffee, cold drinks and delicious homemade cakes! She looks forward to seeing you there!

Burgess Hill Zip Wire

Soar through the park! The Town Council

will be erecting a 160ft long temporary zip wire in St John’s Park, Burgess Hill for one day only on Saturday 25th August.

The zip line will be operating from 9am until 3pm. There will also be Total Wipeout style fun inflatable team games, plus music by Burgess Hill Community Radio and delicious handmade ice-cream. All of the inflatable activities and the zip wire will cost just £1 per person, per go.

Every week over 10,000 people get a new diagnosis of a lung disease and the British Lung Foundation has been leading research into lung conditions for over 30 years, spending over £30m on research.

As a British Lung Foundation support group for those living with lung conditions, their families and carers, Breathe Easy Mid Sussex is always keen to welcome new members. Recent stands at events provided locals and visitors with the opportunity to chat with member volunteers and the ‘Love your Lungs’ theme enabled discussions and information to be provided on the benefits of; pulmonary rehabilitation, being active and exercising, looking after your mental health, eating a balanced diet to improve your symptoms, singing to help breathing, as well as the essential role of Breathe Easy support groups.

Hurstpierpoint Singers

Pull On Your Walking Boots For Sussex Hospices

Friends of Sussex Hospices is asking fundraisers to take on a section of the Sussex Hospices Trail on Saturday, September 15. Walkers can raise funds for a local hospice of their choice or support all 12 by donating to FSH. The Sussex Hospices Trail covers 200 miles from Chichester to St Leonards and Horsham and through Worthing, Brighton

& Hove and Eastbourne. The 26 mapped walks, from 4 to 11 miles long, link areas served by the 12 hospice care providers supporting Sussex. Before the event each team leader must download the iFootpath app and their chosen walk. On the day, teams – of up to eight people - will leave their start point at 9am and follow the route on the app. Medals will be awarded to everyone who finishes their section.

Kathy Gore OBE, Chair of FSH, said: “Our hospices provide crucial support to families at extremely challenging times but they all rely on support from their local communities and so we’ve established the trail to help raise funds and awareness of their vital work.” Sue Korman, who devised the trail said: “We’re delighted to be able to leave the trail as a permanent legacy of the work of Friends of Sussex Hospices.”

Cuckfield Book Festival

Following the first Bookfest held in the Queen’s Hall, Cuckfield in October 2017, the organisers are planning a second one from 4th-7th October. The first event on Thursday 4th October will be a literary quiz, and a supper is taking place on 5th October with poetry readings by two actors providing the entertainment during the evening.

Childhood Bereavement Charity Seeking Volunteers

Winston’s Wish, a charity that supports children after the death of a parent or sibling, is looking for volunteers. Every day, more than 100 children are bereaved of a parent in the UK. The death of a loved one is the most fundamental loss a child will ever face. Each year, Winston’s Wish reaches thousands of bereaved children and young people through an array of dedicated services.

The charity depends on the help of volunteers to ensure that they are able to support all of the bereaved children and families who contact them. This is a great opportunity for people to help the charity support children and young people, generate awareness in the local community, and raise vital funds. Interested

LEGAL Understanding the law surrounding the three key issues of pensions, inheritance tax and will making can be tricky at best. Here, Lisa de Silva puts it into simple, jargon free terms

T

he UK legal system has evolved over hundreds of years to keep pace with our ever-changing society, to ensure that it remains as civilised, fair and protective of citizens as possible.

As such, it is one of the most important institutions in the land. But how well do you know your legal rights when it comes to long-term financial planning?

Long-term financial planning is important in maintaining a good quality of life and the earlier you start the better. To help you understand how legal issues can impact financial planning, both positively and negatively, we’ve taken a closer look at the law around pensions, inheritance tax and will making. Hopefully, some of the issues raised will help set you on the road to creating and maintaining a quality lifestyle for you and your heirs, but we would strongly advise you seek the professional services of a solicitor or accountant to advise you on your individual circumstances.

HOW THE LAW HAS RECENTLY CHANGED AROUND PENSIONS The issue of pensions is a vast and complex area, so we have chosen to focus on how the law has recently changed to affect pensions.

Automatic Enrolment Schemes In April 2017, it became a legal requirement for employers to enrol staff in a workplace pension under the automatic enrolment scheme. All employees are eligible for automatic

enrolment as long as they meet the following criteria: • they are not already in a workplace pension • they are aged 22 years or older • they are under State Pension age • they earn more than £10,000 p.a.

• they work in the UK Employees can opt out, but as employers have to contribute to the scheme as well as the employee, it is a good idea to join. What’s more, employees get tax relief on their contributions to the scheme.

Long-term financial planning is important in maintaining a good quality of life ‘Pensions Flexibility’ Rules The law has also changed since April 2015, when new ‘pensions flexibility’ rules were introduced to allow people over the age of 55 years to access as much of their savings from a defined contributions pension scheme as they wish, with 25% of the sum being taxfree.

The money can then be used in three main ways: • to buy a lifetime annuity but with the option to take a tax free lump sum of up to 25% of your pension pot • to put the funds into drawdown with no limit on the amount you can take each year, again you can take a tax free lump sum of up to 25% of the pot at the same time • to take the money as a lump sum payment, with 25% being tax free.

PLANNING FOR INHERITANCE TAX Inheritance tax (IHT) is a tax levied on the property and assets you have at the time of death and anything you have given away during the previous seven years. Generally, there is no IHT to pay if the total estate is valued below £325,000, or you leave everything to a spouse, civil partner, charity or

vehicles, shares/investments, banks/ building society accounts, foreign property, jewellery and anything given away seven years before your death. It is the job of your executor(s) to value the estate, send the valuation to HMRC and then pay any tax owed. The estate’s value needs to be reported to HMRC even if it is under the £325,000 threshold.

In recent years the law has change around IHT to include Transferable Main Residence Allowance (TMRA) to help people pass property onto descendants. This means that if you leave your home to your children or grandchildren, the tax threshold increases to £450,000. For married couples and those in a civil partnership, the unused threshold can be added to your partner’s threshold giving a total estate value of £900,000 before any IHT is due. This figure is set to rise to £500,000 for individuals and £1 million for couples by 2021.

The standard level of IHT is 40% and it is only charged on the part of your estate that is above the tax threshold. For example, if an estate is worth £500,000, the 40% tax will be due on £175,000 (£500,000 minus £325,000).

HOW TO REDUCE INHERITANCE TAX

Early planning is key to minimising the amount of IHT payable. Firstly, do ensure you have made a will to protect your decisions on how your assets are distributed after your death and to ensure that your affairs are dealt with tax efficiently. One way to reduce the tax is to reduce the value of your estate before you die. However, do be aware that any money or property given away will be liable for IHT if you die within seven years and it is strongly recommended that you invest in professional legal advice before embarking on this course of action as this is a complicated area.

THE MAIN WAYS TO HELP REDUCE IHT INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: give up to £3,000 away each year and pay no tax if unused this tax-exempt allowance can be carried over to the following year to £6,000 gifts of up to £250 a year to any one recipient are excluded from IHT, so this small amount can be given annually to a large number of relatives give a wedding gift up to £5,000 to a child and £2,500 to a grandchild tax-free. If you leave your home to your children or grandchildren, the tax threshold increases to £450,000

to become legal guardians in the event of both parents’ deaths. You can also use a will to give instructions about your funeral. Once you have written a will do make sure family members know where it is kept, or any details of a solicitor it is lodged with.

If you die with no will, or your will is deemed to be legally invalid, your estate is divided up under the rules of intestacy. Under the rules of intestacy only married, civil partners or other close relatives can inherit. So, making a will is vital for unmarried couples as if one dies intestate, it will cause serious problems for the remaining partner.

Upon death, the executor(s) of the will makes a valuation of the estate that is submitted to HMRC. They can then apply to the Probate Registry for a Grant of Probate. Once any inheritance tax has been paid and an oath has been sworn in court, the Grant of Probate is given which allows the executor(s)

to close accounts, transfer assets, deal with property and pay any debts. All debts must be settled before the assets are distributed. This process can be completed by a solicitor if required.

With summer 2018 seemingly one of endless blue skies, it felt like a walk of grandiose proportions was required for August. We teamed Robert Veitch up with Seven Sisters fan, Beth Gumbrell, and sent them on a day long coastal epic

W

e departed Lewes Station beneath layers of thin cloud punctuated by polka dots of bright blue. Detraining at Bishoptone station, walk down the steps at the end of the platform, turning left on to Marine Parade.

The long left hand curve straightens as it passes the former Buckle Inn and the imposing spectacle of Seaford Head fills the horizon. Wander along the promenade for 1½ miles, past Salts Recreation Ground and the Martello Tower, all the way to Splash Point.

The Shoal is a meandering, community bench under-looking Seaford Head. Memorial plaques in the shape of sprats, sardines, herrings and mackerel adorn the furniture. Time to pause and absorb the surroundings.

There’s no escaping the truth, the only way is up and the loose path swiftly evolves into downland grass.

After passing the golf course the path levels off at the 86m (271ft), summit. On the left is Seaford Head Air Navigation Beacon.

It’s a pleasant stroll, with wonderful views of the journey ahead and the route already travelled. Beyond the ‘Buckle Church Burrowers’ sign the path enters a shallow valley on the run down to Hope Gap. On the day we visited, the area was inundated with people. After enquiring we discovered they were making a film, called Hope Gap. Beyond Hope Gap, the path arcs left around the headland, culminating in our county’s postcard to the globe. The view across Coastguard Cottages to the Seven Sisters and the distant Belle Tout is one of the finest panoramas in the UK; epic, cinematic, timeless and very English. There’s a bench by the path, and it’s worth resting the legs for a moment, to absorb the grandeur.

There’s no sensible way across the river so turn left and head inland. The path runs alongside The Cut, a navigation channel dug in 1846 to reduce flooding across Cuckmere Haven.

A259. Cross the road, the bridge, then back across the road and through another gate. The path sits atop the levee and it’s just over a mile back to the beach. Our walk was punctuated with glances to the heavens as a Spitfire practiced aerial manoeuvres.

Turning left as the sea appears over the shingle berm, walk amongst sea kale towards the base of Haven Brow.

A white staircase rises through the chalk, steep steps that rapidly gain altitude. “A little slippery in places, even in the dry,” remarked Beth as she made her way up. Breathe deep and keep going as far as the stile, then beyond, to the summit of Haven Brow.

According to Beth, “it’s as hard as it looks, but well worth it.” At 77m (253ft) it’s the highest of the sisters.

The path veers left and downhill beside the memorial. Steep at first, “we could have abseiled down this,” claimed Beth. The gradient eases, veering left as the cliff edge approaches.

The route strikes a line between summer flowers. After Whitebread Hole playing field, turn right on to the tarmac of Foyle Way, flanked by overgrown, black railings.

The rollercoaster that follows is manna from heaven all the way. Haven Brow leads to Short Bottom, Short Brow, Limekiln Bottom, Rough Brow, Rough Bottom and Brass Point - names that fall off the page like characters in a Victorian novella.

Climbs become easier as the body adjusts to the continual gradient change. “Don’t lose momentum on the ups, take smaller steps,” Beth advised.

Brass Point leads to Gap Bottom, then Flagstaff Point, the Sarsen Stone and Flagstaff Bottom. Then comes the intruder, Flat Hill, the eighth sister is emerging as the landscape retreats at about 70cm a year. Flathill Bottom leads to Baily’s Hill, then Michel Dean and Went Hill Brow.

Beyond Malcolm’s Gate, it’s downhill, past the houses to the car park at Birling Gap. In 1878 there were a dozen cottages here, several metres from the cliff edge. Today four remain.

With 60% of the walk completed we stopped for tea and cake in the café.

The ascent of Belle Tout begins by the red telephone box. It’s ¾ mile to the former lighthouse, built in 1832. Moved 17m (56ft) back from the precipice in 1999, it seems precariously close once again. “That edge is freaking me out,” exclaimed Beth, sensibly keeping well away from it.

It’s downhill from Belle Tout, before the 1½ mile ascent of Beachy Head begins. The appearance of alpine bends indicates the summit of 162m (531ft) is close. Beyond the octagonal memorial is the trig point and south of that is The Compass Rose. From the Rose, walk 60 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2018

Arriving at the suburban fringe of Eastbourne, turn right onto the red brick of Dukes Drive. After 350m bear right by the brown sign, following Holywell Drive down to the Promenade. From here it’s a mile to the Wish Tower, past thatched shelters and multitudes of benches. After that, the bandstand is halfway to the pier and a whimsical, fairy tale journeys end.

Hop up the steps to Grand Parade, turn left and walk 150m, past the Carpet Gardens. Cross the road at the pelican crossing and stroll along Terminus Road. Continue along Terminus Road in differing forms for half a mile, until the Victorian clock

tower of Eastbourne station is close enough to tell the time.

“I love walking the Seven Sisters, it’s so scenic, so special,” reflected Beth. “Completing it this way is a great way to climb eleven hills in a day, and be rewarded with a palpable sense of achievement.” l

It’s a Dog’s Life This month, Rolo the Border Terrier ponders how dogs can all be cut from the same cloth, but be so different!

N

ow I might be a dog of limited understanding, but it seems to me that a lot of trouble is caused in this world by perceived differences between people, which is a bit odd.

Consider dogs. Bearing in mind we are all descended from a common ancestor who spent a lot of time howling at the moon, we are quite a diverse bunch.

This is perfectly illustrated if you happen to have a Chihuahua and a Great Dane in the same room. One is a feisty, independent, free thinker, and the other is affectionate, gentle and loves people, although probably not as convenient if they want to sit on your lap.

Then there’s me and my apprentice, Teddy. We are both Border Terriers but we don’t even look alike. Teds is about a third bigger and is quite sturdy. It’s a bit like having my own bodyguard, which has its uses. Teds has got the traditional Border Terrier otter shaped head, although why he needs that when

he’s a dog and not an otter, is quite frankly beyond me.

My nose is quite long and pointy, which, to quote a rather sinister canine from folk tales, is ‘all the better to sniff you with my dear’! It’s also handy for sticking through small gaps and getting into the corner of popcorn cartons which just demonstrates my high level of evolution.

We are both Border Terriers but we don’t even look alike Even our behaviour is different.

I’m definitely my own dog. I see the petty rules and restrictions imposed by ‘Them Indoors’ as a framework around which to manoeuvre and I don’t really care if they get cross – what’s the worst they can do? Teddy, on the other hand,

is a people pleaser and cannot cope if he is not in favour.

He gets so stressed by my disobedience that sometimes he obeys commands that he knows are intended for me.

He is also a dog who likes a lie-in and needs to be coaxed out of his bed in stages. It takes him about half an hour to get downstairs in the morning, which is only marginally quicker than ‘Her Indoors’. Honestly, you’d never guess I was the dog that was ten years older.

My attitude to other dog breeds has nothing to do with difference but is shaped by one simple criteria, whether I like them or not. I know this is a bit subjective and might be influenced by things like the way they look at me or their smell, but I apply it across the board; big, small, flat faced, long ears, male, female, young or old. And if it all gets out of hand in the doggy diplomacy department then there’s always ‘Her Indoors’ to sort it out. I don’t even discriminate between species; I apply the universal rule of ‘what can they offer me?’ across the board. I’m a great champion of diversity! l

Bowls on THE GREEN

Since 1954 Beech Hurst has been home to Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst Bowls Club.

Chris Bennell tells us about the history there

D

uring every summer more than 1000 bowlers are hosted by the Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst Bowls Club and its members; they will be playing in friendly matches, league games and a range of competitions including Sussex and Nationals. The green is also often the venue for the Sussex Ladies County Finals. However, few if any of the players will know the history of the site where they are competing.

Records show that, at the beginning of the 19th century, the land at Beech Hurst was within the Great and Little Haywards farms, part of the Warden Sergison Estate. A substantial, threestorey Victorian House was built on the site in the middle of that century and the formal gardens and parkland around the house were developed over the succeeding years. In the period up to the early 20th century the property had a number of owners and, during the First World War, it served as the military convalescent home for the Haywards Heath Hospital situated just

across Butlers Green Road.

In 1920 Beech Hurst was purchased for £10,500 by the industrialist and philanthropist William Yapp, who had made his fortune from the Carreras tobacco company. During World War II Beech Hurst was requisitioned to serve as an army camp and William Yapp moved to Tunbridge Wells, where he died in 1946 leaving assets of some £4.4 million. As well as setting up charitable trusts, his will gifted Beech Hurst house and gardens to Cuckfield Urban District Council – the predecessor of the Mid Sussex District Council – for the benefit of local residents, the hand-over taking place in 1950. The grounds were then adapted to public gardens, opened in 1954, including a miniature railway, tennis courts, miniature golf, tea rooms and two bowling greens while the house and its outbuildings were largely demolished.

Initially there were two bowls clubs in the gardens, each with their own green: Beech Hurst BC, formed in 1954, and Haywards Heath BC, which moved there in that year having previously had a green at the top of New England Road from 1905 – 1953. The original bowls pavilion, shared by the clubs, was constructed from an old stable / piggery, the pitched and tiled roof of which can still be seen at the centre of the extended clubhouse in use today. The two separate clubs merged in 1977 to form the Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst BC, and so the 40th anniversary of the

combined club was celebrated in 2017.

Bowls is a game which can be taken up, played and enjoyed by people aged from 9 to 90. Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst BC is a friendly mixed club, affiliated to Bowls England and Sussex County Bowls. We currently have some 60 playing members plus 30 family and social members. WOMEN UNITE Providing a safe space for vulnerable women in West Sussex, My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre offers a helping hand of friendship and a listening supportive ear

M

y Sisters’ House Women’s Centre is the only community women’s centre in West Sussex.

Opening in 2015, the centre provides safe, tailored outcome-focused and holistic ‘extended casework’ support for women. The majority of women who use My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre services are highly vulnerable. Many are experiencing, or have histories of, physical and sexual abuse and/ or are substance abusers, and suffer from associated trauma and mental health problems. Many live in poverty and are part of families or networks where intergenerational disadvantage is common. They have complex needs and lead chaotic lives, and ‘move from one crisis to another’. These women often have low self-worth, do not see themselves as worthy of help, and feel isolated and outcast from society.

My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre is committed to enabling and empowering women of all ages to improve their life chances and fulfil their aspirations.

Julie Budge, Founder of My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre, talked to Sussex Living about the centre.

Sussex Living: Why did you open My Sisters’ House Women’s Centre?

Julie Budge: It all happened after a turbulent few years in my career, and after my self-confidence hit rock bottom.

Trefoil celebrates 75 years of adult Girlguiding this year.

Hanna Prince caught up with Sussex Central County to discover their plans for the anniversary

J

ane Brown is subjecting me to a good-natured grilling.

“What does Trefoil mean to you?” she asks. “It’s always interesting to know how we’re perceived.”

I mumble something inadequate about Trefoil being a branch of Girlguiding.

“Well, yes, that’s true,” she says tolerantly. “Actually, our strapline is ‘Guiding For Adults’. I think many people see us as a group for ex-Guide leaders, but that absolutely isn’t the case.

Trefoil is for anybody who wants to sign up to the ethos of Girlguiding, even if they haven’t necessarily been involved in the past.”

Jane is the County Chair for Sussex Central, which is currently celebrating Trefoil’s 75th anniversary year along with other guilds across the country. Trefoil was officially formed in 1943 to meet the demand among former Guides keen to remain members of the Association. It welcomes anybody over the age of 18 and there are active subsidiary guilds across the

TREFOIL TURNS country – Sussex Central alone has nine different guilds.

“We join for fun and friendship, to keep in touch with leaders and to continue helping with Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and The Senior Section,” explains Jane. We are there as a support group for Guiding, but also it’s about doing something for ourselves.”

The range of activities organised by Sussex Central and its guilds is impressive.

From backstage tours of local theatres and guided history walks to regular garden fetes, bluebell walks, craft events and talks, there’s constantly something going on. Jane recently returned from a Region holiday to Hayling Island, where 39 members

Sussex Central also held a very successful and eventful 75th anniversary tea, with everyone dressed up in fabulous outfits on a lovely sunny afternoon in June. “We do a lot of fundraising, and this year we are supporting Riding

for the Disabled,” says Jane. “In the past, we’ve raised money for a wide range of local charities, including the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, CoCos Foundation and Chestnut Tree House.”

Jane is keen to emphasise that members can choose their own level of involvement and commitment. Some attend regular events, volunteer at fundraisers, help support leaders, take part in training days and travel. Guild members can work towards the Voyage Award. Others simply enjoy coffee, cake and conversation at the odd monthly meeting.

“One of the wonderful things about being part of Trefoil is that wherever you go in the world you can be guaranteed a warm welcome,” she enthuses.

I

magine all the excitement and thrill of backpacking without a heavy rucksack to worry about. That, in a nutshell, is bikepacking – a fusion of bike touring and backpacking currently taking the UK by storm. The wonderful thing about this brand new sport is that anybody can take part. All you need is a pair of wheels, panniers packed with lightweight camping gear and a sense of adventure.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK The secret to a good bikepacking adventure is to go wild. Avoid big roads and plan a route that follows bridleways, dirt tracks and country lanes. The South Downs Way is perfect bikepacking territory, but if you’re feeling intrepid then you can head further afield to explore the pebble beaches of East Devon, the forested shores of Lake Windermere or even the old estate paths on Scotland’s Isle of Mull.

Hard-core bikepackers insist that wild camping (pitching your tent in a remote, free-of-charge spot) is essential to the experience – but wild camping has the disadvantage of being illegal everywhere in England apart from Dartmoor. There’s nothing wrong with cheating a little and cycling between campsites, particularly if you have the kids in tow and fancy a spot of overnight luxury. From coastal havens to secluded forest glens, there are plenty

FAMILY FEELING With the right planning, bikepacking can be an adventure for the entire family. A child seat will be incompatible with the extra load on your bike, so younger kids will need a trailer. Make sure older children are comfortable with riding the distances you plan to cover, and pack plenty of extra warm gear and snacks to keep everyone happy. Keep your first adventure on the short side and incorporate plenty of play breaks. Fill that first trip with fun, and it could be the beginning of a hobby that will last a lifetime. l

Break out of your comfort zone (safely of course) and challenge yourself to learn a new skill. And you never know - far from a fleeting holiday romance, it could be something you continue once you’re back home. Safe and happy holidays from Body Buzz! l

Copthorne sits on the boundary between West Sussex and Surrey. Ruth Lawrence tells of its rich history of smuggling and traditional skills right up to the strong community spirit that still exists today

A

lthough Copthorne hovers on the border with Surrey, it lies just within West Sussex and equidistant between London and Brighton making it popular with commuters and those needing to take advantage of its proximity to Gatwick Airport.

In days gone by, the village’s border position made it a hotspot for smugglers who could step across the county boundary and escape any pursuers; they would stash their goods in the woods around the village after travelling up from the south coast. A story from the 1830s tells the exploits of Jack Akehurst who regularly travelled from Copthorne to Horsham with 25 two gallon casks or ‘pigs’ of smuggled

One of the most eagerly anticipated annual events in the village is the Copthorne Carnival which has been running for 52 years spirits and cigars. Copthorners had an unusual local name of ‘yellowbellies’, which was linked to the traditional trade of charcoal burning which turned the skin yellow with smoke. The name Copthorne derives from ‘capped or pollarded thorn trees’ and the first documented use of the name spelt as ‘Coppethorne’ appeared in 1437.

One of the most eagerly anticipated annual events in the village is the Copthorne Carnival which has been running for 52 years and allows local organisations to raise funds for the work they do in the village. Floats, dancers and stalls line the Village Green and music brings the community together in the evening. There is also the Copthorne Silver Band, which has been part of the community for 115 years, playing at all village events, and in demand across the county.

Newcomers to the village can enjoy the fruits of the Copthorne Millenium Group’s book, CopthorneThe Story So Far which contains over 200 pages of fascinating history and photos of the village and its residents.

If sport appeals, there are several clubs including stoolball, table tennis, badminton, cricket and youth football.

The stoolball team have been playing for fifty years and is always looking for new players to enjoy this traditional and fun Sussex sport. Aspiring actors can join the Copthorne Players who usually put on two shows a year and there are active WI, Mothers Union and Village Associations. New and practicing artists can join the Art Group which meets on Thursday afternoons for a painting and drawing session. There is an amateur choir called the Copthorne Consort Choir who are seeking good singers and a Ladies Club which has proved so popular that it now has a waiting list to join. Copthorne Village Hall is a registered charity; the hall was originally built in 1923 and officially reopened after being extended in the Queen’s Jubilee Year, 1977.

The village has a friendly and inclusive appeal and people tend to stay once they have moved to the area.

Although it has an obvious appeal to commuters and regular users of Gatwick there is much here to attract families and those looking for a small community within easy reach of both coast and city. l

Mexican Sopa de Mariscos Experience the taste and flavour of Mexican cuisine with our seafood soup.

Prepare in advance, to make it the perfect accompaniment for the last of the lazy, hazy summer evenings INGREDIENTS 3 whole sea bream scaled and gutted 24 cleaned mussels 5 tbsp olive oil 3 large banana shallots chopped 8 cloves garlic chopped 5 stalks celery chopped – use any leaves too 800g red and orange tomatoes chopped 2 fat red chillies chopped 4 large sprigs oregano 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 tsp sea salt flakes 15g bunch fresh coriander (stalks removed) 2 small cooked brown crabs cleaned and cut into 4 pieces (ask the fishmonger to do this task) 18 whole raw prawns Use sustainable prawns, brown crab, mussels and gilt head bream or tilapia or other non-oily sustainable whole fish.

TIP The soup can be prepared in advance to the point where all the seafood is added.

Rather than making your own fish stock, you could buy 1 litre of stock from a good fishmonger and use fish fillets instead.

METHOD 1 Take the heads off the fish and remove the fillets. Trim the fillets taking out any 80 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2018

small bones and cut each fillet in half across, cover and put in the fridge.

2 Put all the fish bones, carcass and heads in a large pan and cover with 1.25 litres of cold water and add a teaspoon of salt. Bring slowly to the boil then turn right down to barely a simmer for 30 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it settle for 20 minutes.

Sit a sieve over a bowl, strain the stock and discard the bits caught in the sieve.

3 Wash the large pan and add the oil, heat gently and add the shallots, celery, garlic, tomatoes, chillies, oregano, half the coriander and season with pepper.

4 Take 100ml of the strained stock and put it in a lidded pan big enough to take the mussels and put to one side. Add the rest of the stock to the sautĂŠed mixture and simmer gently for about 20 minutes.

7 When ready to serve, heat the mixture and add the crab and prawns for 3 minutes. Add the fish pieces and give another 3 minutes.

Finally add the mussels and cook for another minute before folding in remaining coriander leaves. l
