DSCR - 2023/24 Funding The 2023/24 DSCR funding process is underway and application forms are available on request.

DSCR (Digital Social Care Record) Grant Grant Amount: £70 per bed for care homes with 25 beds or more. £1650 for all other care providers.

Eligibility Criteria: CQC registered, Sussex based care providers .

Procuring a digital social care record system from the Assured Solutions List The grant is available for care settings between April 2023 & March 2024.

The specific choice of the system from the assured list, is determined by the individual care home organisation and to best meet their requirements.

Completion of a Data Protection Impact Assessment along with completion of your DSPT will be encouraged for all applicants.

Digital Maturity Survey As Technology becomes more popular in the Care industry, it is important to ensure that you have the correct infrastructure in place.

Here we have tools to help you assess your current systems and helpful resources to guide you when you need to make improvements.

Social Care Annual Digital Maturity Self Assessment This free, on line self-assessment tool has been specially designed to help you understand your strengths as well as what might be blocking your way. Completing the questionnaire will provide evidence for future funding to be made available to social care providers like you across Sussex to support your digitalisation.

This could mean funding towards fast broadband or WiFi coverage, falls prevention equipment, remote monitoring, EMAR, digital care planning system or staff training.

We recommend that all care providers complete this 5 minute survey at least once per year. It has been designed to help you understand where you might need to make changes or upgrades to your existing digital infrastructure in order to support the growing number of digital technologies now being used in social care.

This is not a test, it is a self assessment. We are not here to judge, only to help and you are welcome to complete the survey as often as you like, especially if you introduce a new technology. Based on your answers, the survey will put you into one of 4 groups with recommendations and if you fall into the Standards Exceeded, you can download a certificate.

The state of health care and adult social care in England 2022/23 State of Care is our annual assessment of health care and social care in England.

The report looks at the trends, shares examples of good and outstanding care, and highlights where care needs to improve.

This year has been a turbulent one for health and social care.

In addition to the ongoing problem of ‘gridlocked’ care highlighted in last year’s State of Care, the cost of living crisis is biting harder for the public, staff, and providers – and workforce pressures have escalated. This combination increases the risk of unfair care – where those who can afford to pay for treatment do so, and those who can’t face longer waits and reduced access.

Adult social care providers are facing increased running costs, including food and electricity, with some struggling to pay their staff a wage in line with inflation, which affects recruitment and retention. This is likely to have an impact on people, both in the quality of care they receive and in providers’ ability to re-invest in care homes – data from our Market Oversight scheme shows that care home profitability remains at historically low levels.

Local authority budgets have failed to keep pace with rising costs and the increase in the number of people needing care. As adult social care places funded by a local authority are often less profitable, there is the risk that people who live in more deprived areas, and are more likely to receive local authority-funded care, may not be able to get the care they need.

Some people who pay for their own care at home have had to cut back on visits to support their basic needs. One homecare provider told us that, due to the cost of living crisis and increased fuel prices, it had to increase the rates charged. Because of this, some people had to reduce their care visits to a minimum, which had an impact on their quality of life.

SECRC - Helping to improve your Cyber Security

Did you know the SECRC exists to help all businesses in the #SouthEast to improve their cyber security?

Their newsletter and free membership is open to anyone self-employed or running a small business.

Cyber Security Statistics • In the last 12 months, 39% of UK businesses identified a cyber-attack in the last • In the last 12 months, 83% of these businesses reported phishing attempts, and 26% identified a more sophisticated attack type such as a denial of service, malware or ransomware attack.

• Only 19% of businesses have a written incident management plan for cyber security • 31% of small and micro businesses hit by cyber-attacks in the last 12 months were attacked at least once a week.

• 20% of cyber-attacks on SMEs & microbusinesses in the last year had negative impacts on the impacted business.

• Nearly 50% of all recorded crime in 2022 was for fraud and cybercrime.

• Estimates showed there were 4.5 million fraud offences in the Telephone-operated Crime Survey for England and Wales (TCSEW) year ending March 2022, a 25% increase compared with the CSEW year ending March 2020.

• Phishing is one of the main methods used to commit fraud.

Most care providers I speak to are increasingly aware of the value of going digital – it improves decision making through access to current information and increases efficiency. They also have valid concerns about risks.

Cyber-crime is now a part of our modern world. We’ve all seen those well-disguised emails and texts inviting us to click on a credible looking link.

As care professionals, we have to be alert. We access and share sensitive information, from clients’ health and care records, to the bank details of our employees for payroll purposes. That’s precious data to a cyber criminal, who can demand a ransom to release it, or use it as part of identify theft.

As part of the Better Security, Better Care programme, I’ve been struck by the rise in care providers coming forward for support on cyber security – often driven by their desire to make the most of digital social care records.

We guide providers through the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) – the official self-assessment toolkit for our sector.

They quickly understand the importance of, for example, using strong passwords and training staff. But the DSPT often reveals significant gaps in their arrangements which conversely, we are encouraged by as it opens the door for care providers to have an informal discussion in a supportive setting to start thinking about areas they have not yet felt the confidence to tackle.

Include cyber security in business continuity plans The DSPT is also ensuring providers add cyber security to their business continuity plans. We’re very aware that care providers are well used to ‘thinking on their feet’ and most, if not all, have continuity plans for situations such as staff and petrol shortages but many get nervous about planning for a cyber incident due to perceived lack of knowledge when in reality it is a relatively simple process that could save time and money in the event of a cyber incident.

For example, we encourage providers to think about: What would you do if you could not access the data held in digital care records, or digital staff rostering systems? Do you have accessible back-ups?

The Digital Care Hub (formerly Digital Social Care) has guidance and templates available on creating and testing a business continuity plan for data and cyber security.

Digital Care Hub: New name for Digital Social Care

We’ve changed our name to the

Digital Care Hub – but don’t worry, you’re in the right place!

From 22nd Sept 2023, Digital Social Care has become the Digital Care Hub. We are still an independent consortium, led by care providers, which supports services to make the most of digital technology, safely. The consortium is continuing to host Better Security, Better care – the national programme helping care providers with data and cyber security. And we are supporting the NHS-led Digitising Social Care programme which now has its own website.

You will see some changes happening throughout September and October.

Our name, logo and website address has changed, and some content has transferred to the new Digitising Social Care website. But don’t worry, even if you are using old website links, they will get redirected to the most appropriate place for information.

Later in October, we will be making further changes to our website to make it even easier to find the information you want. We will ensure that all relevant content is still available to you – and we will continue to develop our sector-led support, content and guidance.

The Digital Care Hub consortium consists of several members of the Care Provider Alliance. At present, these members are: ● Association For Real Change (ARC) – an umbrella body representing disability sector service providers. ●

Association of Mental Health Providers– the representative body for mental health organisations in England and Wales.

Care England – a leading representative for care providers in England.

●

Homecare Association – a membership body for those that provide homecare in the

National Care Association– which represents small and medium sized care providers and promotes quality care. The Registered Nursing Home Association merged with NCA in 2023.

National Care Forum – the membership organisation for not-for-profit organisations in the care and support sector

Voluntary Organisations Disability Group (VODG) – represents voluntary organisations who work with people with disabilities.

Digital Care Hub - Events and training Completing the Data Security and Protection toolkit for the first time Date: Tuesday 24 October 2023 - Location: Online / Zoom webinar The Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) is an online self-assessment tool to help adult social care providers in England to store and share information safely.

It shows you what you need to do to keep people’s information safe, and to protect your business from the risk of a data breach or a cyber attack. It covers both paper and digital records.

It also reassures everyone you work with that you are taking data security seriously, which in turn can open up access to NHSmail and shared records systems such as GP Connect and proxy access. Care providers must have an up-to-date DSPT in place to meet NHS contracts – and local authorities and CQC inspectors increasingly expect you to have it.

Care providers should complete the toolkit at least once a year.

It will cover how to: Register for the DSPT – including how to register if you have multiple services and sites Complete to Approaching Standards and Standards Met Publish your DSPT standard Access free, official support from the Better Security, Better Care programme.

This webinar is for care providers who have published before, and are reviewing and republishing their DSPT. It will cover what has changed within the Toolkit for 2023/24, as well as how to: • Login to your DSPT account • Review your DSPT – including what is different if you were previously published at Entry Level or Approaching Standards • Complete to at least Standards Met • Publish your DSPT standard • Access free, official support from the Better Security, Better Care programme.

These numbers are a stark reminder of cybercrime's ever-present threat and the crucial need for effective cybersecurity measures. Understanding cybersecurity, therefore, is not a luxury, but a necessity in our increasingly digital world.
