A Level information A Levels are two-year courses similar to GCSEs but at a higher level in a varied range of subjects. In your first year you complete AS and progress to A2 for your second year. You need to select three or four subjects although some students take five. A mixture of coursework and exams assesses you at the end of each year. With A Levels you can progress to university or into employment. In order to study a GCE Four AS/A Level programme, students need to have achieved:

In order to study a GCE THREE AS/A Level programme, students need to have achieved:

• At least five A*-C grades at GCSE, including two B grades • An average GCSE score of at least 5 (see chart below) • GCSE English (language preferred) and maths

• At least 4 A*-C grades at GCSE • GCSE English (language preferred) and maths

HOW TO WORK OUT YOUR GCSE SCORE Each GCSE grade is given a number of points as outlined below A*= 8 points A = 7 points B = 6 points C = 5 points D = 4 points E = 3 points F = 2 points G = 1 point U = 0 point

Write down the GCSE subjects you have taken and the results that you have achieved or hope to get. Then add the points together and divide by the number of subjects you have taken. For instance: English - B = 6, Maths - C = 5, History - B = 6, Art - A = 7, Geography - D = 4, Drama - C = 5 Total: 33 points Divided by number of subjects (6) = 5.5 average GCSE score.

Sociology

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science (Forensic Science)

“You are in the process of being indoctrinated. We have not yet evolved a system of education that is not a system of indoctrination. We are sorry, but it is the best we can do. What you are being taught here is an amalgam of current prejudice and the choices of this particular culture.” – Doris Lessing

Forensic Science is simply the application of science to the law. In criminal cases forensic scientists are often involved in the search for and examination of physical traces that might be useful for establishing or excluding an association between someone suspected of committing a crime and the scene of the crime or victim.

Sociology allows one to exit the box that you have been placed within your whole life and examine society itself through the looking glass of social science. Have ever wanted to know how people are processed through the education system? How things that we take for granted everyday, such as what it is to be a teenager, are socially constructed? In Sociology A level you will be introduced to the theories, methods and methodologies necessary to analyse the following topics: • Culture and Socialisation • Methods and Methodology • Youth Culture and Subculture • Crime, Deviance, Victimisation • Social Stratification • Measurement of Inequality

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is a real job with training – so you can earn while you learn and gain recognised qualifications as you go. If you live in England, are over 16 and not in full-time education you can apply. Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete and are completely free to you!

KEY BENEFITS • Earn a salary • Get paid holidays • Receive training • Gain qualifications • Learn job-specific skills DO I HAVE TO PAY ANYTHING TO BECOME AN APPRENTICE? No. While you are on an apprenticeship, your employer pays you a salary and supports you as you undertake your training. Most of the training is ‘on the job’ within the workplace; however the rest can be provided by a local college or by a specialist learning provider. In some cases your employer could provide it all. If you have employment and you’re a school leaver or adult of 19-24 years, an apprenticeship could be the best choice you make.
