One Last Try at the Aid Station Date : April 20, 2009
Aid stations…the goal is to get in and out as fast as possible. This one at Umstead was taking longer than it should have for an unfortunate reason. What you see here is a last-ditch attempt at blister prevention. Or at least damage control. I’d been blister-free for maybe 15 or 20 ultras and hadn’t renewed my supply of blister pads. Ivy Block had spilled on the ones in my med kit, ruining them. So, the next best thing is duct tape. Yep, you got it – duct tape. It sticks well and at least has a chance of stopping direct skin friction from making the blister worse. Theoretically, anyway. In this case, it was night at the main aid station, so maybe 60 miles into the race with worsening blisters and less than a week to heal before Zumbro 100 the following weekend. Something had to be done. This time, the duct tape held for less than 12 more miles. I quit looking at my feet after that.
