Liza, Christian and Zane Date : March 18, 2009

There, on page 70, were more familiar names. Cool. Pretty picture of a boat at the bottom of the page…wonder where that is…WAIT! One of those names has never been in Ultrarunning before! WOO-HOO!!! It’s Liza, a great friend that Rob and I paced in her first 50K in January in Tsali, NC. Ok, truth be told, we slowed her down unmercifully (this being her first one and all). There’s nothing like basking in that warm, sunny, first-timer finish glow. I was lucky enough, in a way, to get that three times in the past year. Once with Liza, once with Christian at his first 100, and once with Zane at his first 100. Those moments will stick with me forever. Competitive Liza, after Rob and I held her back all day in last place, spotting two fading female runners ahead and swinging around on the trail to face us and whisper-yell “YESSSSS!” Christian rolling in to the Superior Trail 100 finish in the pitch-dark rainy night, after flat-out refusing to give up (when I’d have been sorely tempted). And Zane quietly stopping with Wesley, Rob and I at the top of the very last hill before the at Massanutten 100, and after a silent moment asking me to describe the route to the finish two miles ahead…me getting choked up describing it. If you’ve never run an ultra, don’t worry that you’re burdening the experienced ultrarunner keeping you company in your first one. And if you’re an experienced ultrarunner, help a first timer. It’s a race you’ll never forget.
