Racing x 3 Date : March 12, 2009
Three could be 3 Days of Syllamo (three races in one weekend!) that I’m packing for right now, or the three consecutive race weekends in a row this is a part of. Yeah, racing this much requires some concentration on the logistics, for sure, but it’s an awful lot of fun. I wish I’d been doing it like this a long time ago. Since Old Pueblo 50 Mile was last weekend, 3 Days is a 50K (Friday), 50 mile (Saturday) and 12 mile (Sunday) this weekend, and Oak Mountain is next weekend, you could think of it as five races in three weekends. Or you could just think of it as a golden opportunity to pack as much fun in three weekends as possible. Many runners, even ultrarunners, question this approach. After all, you can’t peak for all those races, can you? Maybe so, maybe not, but that’s not the point. I don’t go to races with the intent of collecting a fast time or a high place. Those motivations should work but deep inside, never have. I go for a whole set of more satisfying reasons. It’s taken me a long time (a lifetime) of running and racing, a lot of recent life changes to finally stop, sit with the question “why do I race?” and listen patiently for the answer. It’s been worth it. I’ll explain it more later, but for now let’s just say this is going to be a fun weekend to give that new philosophy a try. Times three!
